I have a mechanic trying to charge me 600 dollars for the steering rack and 6 hours man labor and alignment of course for 1600 dollars, thank you for the video and help needless to say got the part for 200 and changed it myself for free!
There are no new steering racks for the 02-06 Camry's, all are rebuilt. When you get the replacement steering rack there are plastic block off plugs where the power steering lines thread in. Remove those plugs prior to installing the new rack and inspect the threads to make sure they are clean and not cross threaded or damaged. Any damage to the threads return the rack for a replacement. Put the plugs back in and install the rack. Carefully inspect the power steering lines and hose fittings to make sure that the threads are not dirty or damaged. After disconnecting the power steering lines carefully use a pick or other pointed end tool to remove the old O rings, new steering rack comes with new O rings. Use the new O rings. Remember to tie off the steering wheel so it does not turn using the seat belt. Replacing the steering rack is not difficult, take your time and be very careful when putting the power steering lines back onto the rack. Use your fingers and check from the bottom and top views to make certain you have not cross threaded the fittings when putting the power steering lines back in place. A cross threaded power steering line will result in you needing to replace the line and the new rack you just paid a lot of money for.
Great video. I also have to do struts and control arms. Is this any easier to do when I do all that at the same time? Dealer quoited me nearly 5-6000 dollars to do steerinng rack, shocks, struts, control arms and control arm bushings. I’m a beginner mechanic with no car lift
The two lines that get disconnected from the rack before taking it out one is the high pressure and one is the return. The lower of the two is the high pressure correct?
I have the same issue on my 04 camry xle. I already replaced the sway bar, links and control arms on both sides. After they got the control arms in the steering was doing the same thing, it kept sliding and when I brake the steering shifts to the left. What state are you in buddy? I don't mind the drive as long as I know the job is gonna get done well. Thank you for the video
RB, please tell me how many hours a mechanic should charge me to have this done? I have an 02 Toyota Echo. I don't want to get ripped off. Thanks in advance!
Mines is doing the same thing, even after doing an alignment. Cause even when you drive over bumps and imperfections in the road, the steering wheel has too much play. And when I make a hard left or right when parking, it doesn't want to automatically return to center and I have to assist it. So I know it's the steering rack. I'm doing it myself.
Kevin Lucas that steering not returning to straight might be bad control arms also check ur center nuclear I have video on lexuse let me show u I’ll send u link describe me more details on not returning to center .. once I changed control arms on Mercedes Benz I put after market arms every time I took it for drive around the corner on turns it would never return to center on its own then I put new control arms from dealer that fixed the issue
I had replaced one of the control arms and still doing the same thing. And one day when I was driving when I was making a left turn, the steering got temporarily stiffed for a while. And when I be driving it tends to wander even after an alignment. And driving over bumps and things on the road, the steering wheel shakes and too much play.
Kevin Lucas check the link I sent u the part I change in the video prolly has play in it or is jammed up the one I change in video was jammed up it’s common on Toyota and Lexus
@@RBTheMechanic I live in Westfield, and there's some slop in my steering. I checked the tie rods and the universal joints in the steering shaft and they both seem fine so I think it's the steering rack. I got a 2004 camry like the one in the video.

Cardone offers a new rack, called the New Series. Part number 97-2606 for a 2004 Camry rack; costs about twice as much as a rebuilt unit.
I really love these. If i were with you i can know every thing thank you my brother
Thanks for the video bro. Great work you broke it down completely thank you for helping me get this job done.
Yup easy just long process

I would do this first then do the rest together don’t make a mess with everything open
Great teaching video, RB. Is this a 4 or 6 cylinder engine?
Is the 6 a more complicated job, as far as labor is concerned?
6 is more complicated but not so bad
Great job, now for the bolts to just give me a break.
Great video! Thanks!
Yup thank u will help lot of people
Loved your video!
Thank you!!
I really like your video. Thank you for the help. 😊
No problem! Thank you for watching I tried to show every step. It’s really simple just the trick to pull it out
I need to do this to my 04 le camry. What aftermarket rack would you recommend?
Dorman is good

@@defmud80 I’m not sure in order which one is high and low just follow the one to pump that is high pressure
Nice video. Kudos👍
Thank you
