Slayer had some of the most brutal riffs ever made, but their solos never stopped sounding as if they were 15 year olds struggling to play as fast as possible.
I didn't like their solo at first (30 years ago when all metal bands plays melodic sound solos) but after a while l realized they did great actually, both jeff and kerry.. yes they sounded so fucking strange and even out of keys but they sounded evil and it's all that matters, forget about theory, they are what they are, unique and no rules. If they're go by what key, scale, mode etc. then they're predictable just like all other bands
I think a good artist or a good band creates their own sound that they almost creates their own unique sub-genre. Although they started out wanting to emulate Maiden or Priest, they went in a totally different direction that was their own. The whole point of a good song is often to take you to a particular place and in Slayer's case, that place was Hell. There is no place for galloping solos that take you to soaring heights in Hell.
I believe Jeff hanneman was best known for his great songwriting skills not so much is Flash on guitar solos but just the ability to write great songs like Angel of Death great Rifts each artist in the band brings something together that brings something so beautiful and music perfection
As a Christian , I listen to metal , funny enough my fav solo of Jeff was during the song : the antichrist. Shit I realized that in my eyes he’s the best guitar player 💯
You say he needs to listen to more guitarists than Hannemen but I listen to a SHITLOAD and I still think he's the baddest, when I think about who's the baddest I don't think about who's the most technical but who writes the baddest shit
I just that if you only care about solos in songs, slayer isnt your band. Most people hype solos on songs too much, Aggressive riffs and lyrics is where its at.
1:55 You can clearly hear that Jeff (and Kerry) was capable of doing a classic metal solo, but they decided that's not what they were aiming for. As KMac2021 correctly called it "dissonant hell". That's what it is supposed to be. Slayer is supposed to be the soundtrack for torture. That's why they never did any ballads.

I think I’m fortunate in that I don’t know enough technically how Slayers solos stack up. Their solos move me the most though . Still to this day they give me goosebumps and most other bands do not do that . I don’t care much if they’re not technically perfect . They do however have that ‘it’ factor for me and always will 😊
All these solos are the same. Abstract, improvised chaos with a dive bomb here n there. No modes, or scales that match any notes the rhythm guitar is playing. I feel for anyone who may have attempted to tab any of these out. lol
The Antichrist, die by the sword and especially praise of. Death (I would take the record version over this specific live performance but only by a little bit). Have some actually really great solos. Actually pretty melodic and for the song really well
