He wrote the song on the memories from growing up with neighbors, white or black his mom and neighbors borrowed items from each other. After the Navy he moved to California and realized it wasn't like home in West Virginia
I experienced the same childhood in OHIO, lived in CA, NM, & FL…they were nothing like home…wouldn’t change my childhood/neighborhood, for nothing!
Bill just passed away about a year ago, I think. Loved his music.

I live 20 mins from where he grew up here in West Virginia, he grew up in Slab Fork West Virginia in Raleigh County

Bill Withers has a rich catalog. I'd love to hear to react to more if you have the time. "Just The Two of Us," "Use Me," "Grandma's Hands," and "Ain't No Sunshine" are great ones. The groove in "Use Me" is stellar. It might be one of the best grooves ever.
