- In custom car audio we need to create many wiring connections and the best way to do so is with soldering the wires together. But just like woodworking or fabrication having the right tools can make the process much easier, more efficient and quick. For the longest time I've used a stationary soldering station and not much else, but there are some tools that can definitely improve the soldering process. In this video we take a look!

Thanks Mark for those 'hot tips'!!🤦♂️🤣
(Rim shot)
I'm sure this goof takes all kinds of hot tips when he's being the catcher.
@@rxtuninginc8444 lol nah I actually save that for your Mom!!
Soldering tip, when you're done soldering before you turn off the iron.
Melt a bunch of solder on the tip so the tip is encased in solder. Then let it cool like that. All the oxides will protect your tip from oxidizing your tip and not ruin your tip.
I constantly seem to need a third hand when soldering wires together, I just ordered one for myself. Thanks Mark.
I have the Milwaukee solder iron & it does work well but it eats batteries & it’s too cumbersome to use in a car . I have used butane soldering irons for years & this is my routine- I have 2, one for soldering & the other for heat shrink . I don’t know if snap on still has them but they used to have a magnetic holder for the pocket stream light & they work great for holders . W/ the solder I have a 2” piece of #2 cable I put a few feet of solder on & it’s easy to use in confined areas . Thanks for all the videos you do & keep them coming (I’m kinda self taught & soak up anything you have to offer ! ) have a good one ! I just remembered, the holders were for the pocket mag light , brain fart 😎
Yep I have a simple 60W variable temp corded one and a Butane powered one and between the two there's nothing I haven't been able to solder.
Thanks to those of you that asked I'm now making a new tool that you can buy! The "CAF SOLDERING STATION"!

Where is the black tool that holds the wires together link?
Very helpful
Recently bought a new a CAF spool and wire holder that makes it easier for me to solder.
That blue mat is really cool. Way better that using a shop towel to catch solder while soldering inside a car lol
That’s definitely a handy solder holder! Wouldn’t mind adding that to my kit.
Oh dang, it’s sad to say, I’ve been living in the Stone Age. I like my old bench soldering iron with heat gun station. I like it because I can dial in the temps. I don’t like the sponge... hate it :-( My helping hands bite. Actually, they’re not helping, only impeding. My work top has seen its better days. IT IS TIME FOR SOME UPGRADES. At the prices of the equipment you featured, I must upgrade without question. ORDERING SOON... soldering mat, soldering sponge, and helping hands. The cordless soldering iron would be sweet. I’ll look into it a little more. Hey, thanks for the upgrade suggestions and the great content in your videos. Best regards, Doug
If you get the larger batteries with the big flat bottom you can stand it up without having to worry about it tipping over!
Pro tip 👆
Great setup. A tip for a mini soldering iron/pen is the TS100, programmable soldering iron. Best I've ever used!
I would love both of those 3D printed things
Keep an eye out!
@@CarAudioFabrication I would also like to buy a 3D printed wire holder for you Mark.
The Milwaukee cordless soldering option caught my attention. However, that is a really big clunker to be holding in the hand. I could see hand fatigue moving that thing around.
I have been using a Weller butane soldering iron for years and love it. Small, adjustable heat, and side exhaust port for heat shrink.
But I love the other options you showed and I take your advice on many things for useful tools and tips. Keep up the videos and thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Milwaukee is definitely making some cool newer tools
The 3d printed multiple wire holder would definetely make the process of hooking up a harness much faster
Definitely interested in the solder spool holder for sure
Butane soldering iron works great also.
Yep I have one and it works great for being completely portable. There been a few times I'm not near a plug or don't have a long enough extension cord and the Butane iron works great.
@@rxtuninginc8444 plus you can use it as a heat gun as well for heat shrinking tubing.
Really great video once again and a great collection of useful soldering tools=]
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
You forgot liquid solder flux (non-acid). Very helpful in helping the wire absorb the solder .
Thanks for the video.
Need a whole video about 3d printed stuff that can help improve car audio sound and or improve looks or even improve build quality or the ease of installing with stl files
Not a fly on Mark! Keep expanding Brother
Great vid, Mark. I love my Milwaukee soldering iron. Get yourself a 4 or 6ah battery and it lasts soooo much longer plus it gives the iron a sturdy stand with a low center of gravity.
Haha I have that same helping hands, too.
Yes! Was looking at batteries yesterday thinking that!
Having seen the iron chug batteries in the wild, I have to guess that the standard profile M12 batteries are being pretty significantly overdriven in this application. Might want to go for those M18-base M12ers like the 5Ah "high output" variety.
Love the portable 12V soldering gun!
I have a Butane powered one that works amazing. Just as good as my 60W plug in. Not quite as good as my 100w Weller but for being completely portable it's been awesome.
@@rxtuninginc8444 they are good until you get burned by the exhaust lol
I like your 3-D printed wire holder. Can it hold different gauge wire say from 10 to 22?
Very nice! Where do you think soldering is required the most in a complete audio install?
Good stuff Mark. I was hoping to find an affiliate link for the Milwaukee. I'll check back in a couple of days.
I love the idea of the 3D printed holder's!
:)
look mark i buy sky high wire not that piece of crappy wire I use welding wire not ofc wire
@@CarAudioFabrication look mark i buy sky high wire not ofc wire that is piece of crappy wire I use welding wire
Once again if you tin your leads prior to putting them in the helping hands and together it makes for a cleaner, more solid, and easier connection. Also look into anti-wicking tools to prevent solder from wicking under the insulation
I always do that to both sides of the wire that I joining, then simply putting the two wires side by side and touching them with the iron fuses them together perfect. I never have to add solder to join wires, the little bit I put on each wire ahead of time is enough. I always dip the wire in Flux first too, burn the Flux off with the iron, then add some solder to it. Works great.
Would be interested in the 3d printed wire holder
Good to know, keep an eye out soon.
you should test a soldering iron that has the heating element on the tip it self like a ts100 portable or a metcal mx 500p or a jbctools cbd station its like night and day compared to tge ones you have
Could you do a video on how to build a sub box that sounds good at ,low to mid volume. I don't need to shake the house just get good sound. Thanks
Yes I need the 3d printed tools let me know when I can place an order
Stl on the wire holding stuff
Damn the price on that power wire is awsome wish I knew before I dumped mony on some cheap welding cable that ever sence I instaled it after replacing what I had in my (double insulated welding cable) it had alternator whine (unless it was because I shorted power to ground on my last amp and power cable and it damaged somthing in the car 🤣)
I want the wire holder very cool piece
Keep an eye out!
Another tip, is to use the right size tip. You should use a tip that is large enough to transfer heat quickly without dropping, is sinking, too much heat from the tip.
Example, when I would solder SMD's, on a board, I would use a beveled tip that was slightly wider than the land pads. That ensures you get good surface area contact and heat transfer..
Too small of a tip and the tip temp drops too muh and you have to hold the tip to long and is a quick way to lift pads off boards.
Wires granted are different, having at least a 30W iron or higher works well. With the proper tip temp, the solder should wick up into the twisted copper.
I prefer the Weller P2C butane iron over the battery powered versions. Quick to eat heat up and smaller.
I have the Bernzomatic Butane Iron and a Weller corded.
Awesome! Does that Milwaukee soldering iron work as well as a professional Weller?
As long as you have at least a 60w iron with variable temp there should be nothing you can't solder.
I just got an 8 arms solder helping hands with a fan and magnifier.
Awesome!
@@CarAudioFabrication Great bit of kit
hummm.... I never used helping hands to solder wires. I figured out how to hold the wire with my left middle finger and thumb and wrap the solder around my pointer finger and feed into the wire and iron tip. Crap, I forgot to mention I've been soldering for a living for 20 years at a PCB manufacture. Normies can't get these skills from soldering once in a life time.
EDIT: I should add a pro tip to save your iron tips. After your done soldering the joint leave some solder or add a ball of solder on the tip when in stand by. Now, right before you use the iron again wipe it clean and add a bit of fresh solder to the tip. In other words, Keep a ball of solder on the tip at all times when not in use, just clean it right before you use it. It's helps maintain the tip you wont end up blowing a hole in the tip after a few hours of dry docking. You can resurrect a tip by using tip tinner by applying to tip and wipe it of and keep going till solder sticks to the tip again.
Hopefully your Milwaukee m12 soldering iron last's more than 3 weeks
buy the milwaukee m18 heat gun , u will love it
@caraudiofabrication can I please ask a personal question request for my audio system if there’s any way to message you on email or anything my brand new amp goes into protection mode but if I have a sweet spot it won’t what is the cause of this I can show you my setup and tell me what you think if there’s an email anything I’d very much appreciate your help just got into audio just really need help!!
Hope you do not plan on using milwaukee for a long time.. Battery sucks
Good thing they make several larger capacities
@@CarAudioFabrication only used the one that came with it.. 45 mins to hour solid use it dead.
