just had my transmisson rebuilt 2 weeks ago. 03 silverado , $2500 total. new torque converter, flushshed lines, everything replaced. every thing smooth., 1 year / 14,000 mile warranty.
6l80/90 is about $1k more over the 4l60/4l80
@@mph5896 Ouch!
I just had mine replaced with a new remanufactured jasper transmission, $3500, 3yr/ 100,000 . 07 Silverado
I have a 2014 Sierra with the 6L80 and started having the dreaded "stutter" issue at 100K miles. The stutter is the clutch in the torque converter coming apart. I was fortunate enough to catch it early on. Took my truck to the local GMC dealer and they pulled the pan and it was actually clean, no glitter or clutch material. I had the transmission serviced at 84K miles and it had a normal pan, light clutch material with no glitter. They put a torque converter in it and so far so good. I'm at 122K now and hoping the transmission lasts for a good while as I do plan on having it rebuilt and using a 3 clutch billet converter in the future. My truck never set any codes on the converter stuttering. The issue with these transmissions is the torque converter, that's why a 3 clutch billet unit is always better than a factory single clutch.
Just had my Silverusto trans rebuilt. Good so far, shop used upgraded parts for all the known issues for the 6L80E.
The 6L80,the dexron 6 is the cause of the torque converter shudders. It is also killing the the transmission.Get that dexron 6 out flushing out good and replace it with the Mobil 1 blue label LV HP fluid. This includes the 6L90
Sounds good, but I think it is already too late for that, damage is done. Having the proper fluid means everything.
@jthonn The transmission reman places have found this out.Jasper is one of them, will not warranty theirs if the dexron 6 is used.Have to use the Mobil 1 blue label lv hp fluid in theirs
@@Toolaholic7 Good info, Thanks
Any documentation to back up this claim on the 6l80/90?
Never heard it referred to as a
' transmixer ', I usually call them a
' translation ' like Eva Gabor in old Aamco Transmission commercials. ( Eva Gabor played Lisa Douglas in Green Acres TV show ) In one commercial she had the Aamco guy calling it an automatic translation, and then SHE corrected HIM.
On some other show she was talking about driving and told the host how her car had a
' pernendal ' ( PRNDL )
Hello Mr Kenny. Hope y'all are having a great weekend. We got more rain since Friday so another vacation from yard work 😅😂. 🎉
Hi Bobby! I gotta go to the shop & do brakes on my truck. We were supposed to get rain, but so far, we haven't gotten anything. Enjoy your day! Thanks for watching & commenting. Meg says hello. 😃 keep wrenching brother 🔧
@@WrenchingWithKenny Good luck with your brakes sir
Yep, my yard is looking like a jungle. I get it a day or 2 before yall get it. It beats the drought we had last year.
@@jthonn this yard looks like a jungle, hiding a junkyard, hiding crawling critters 🤓🤣

There is a reason that I miss TH350s and TH400s or the 727.
No Electronics is a good thing. Don't forget the Power Glide!
Thanks Kenny
I have seen some mechanics present how a dysfunctional DOD system damages the converter destroying the transmission, I have a 2009 2500 HD with no DOD and 0 issues at 200,000 miles.
I'm going to start a youtube channel called Watching Kenny fix stuff 😁
@butchjohnson3953 😂😂😂
Kenny, did I beat Bobby again! It must be raining where he is. LOL
I saw your video on the android bi direction scanner.... I was wondering if you like(d) it... but also if you still have it... maybe you can use a screen record app so your camera work can be just on the subject matter? Just a thought... but I love the videos... just wondered if that would make it easier / Safer while doing certain jobs..... Mechanics.... we're always one slight mistake away from serious damage!!!
My 2015 Sierra's transmission failed at the 125k mark and the local Chevy dealer installed a rebuilt unit. I went a step further and installed a Superior Solutions thermostat, which drastically reduced the trans fluid temp. Prior to the install it would reach and stay at 189 degrees and now it hovers right at 142...
I don't know jack when it comes to transmissions, a little about the bands with the old school, a little about the solenoids in the newer, filter and fluids, that's about it. CVTs, well, I think they are getting better with those, the first ones were a nightmare. I'll stick with the transmission shops or the rebuilt ones. Good diagnosing.
Thank you for your kind words & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
Same transmission here in my 17 silverado 1500. the darn thing failed at only 66,000 miles. Fortunately I was able to find a reputable transmission shop locally and they were able to install a remanufactured unit with upgraded internals. (I bought the truck used from Carmax and thank God I bought the extended warranty - so that covered most of the repair bill). Between the stupid thermostat that GM added and the weak/bad quality parts, this will be the last GM product I buy. I realize that this type of thing could happen to any vehicle, but when so many people are getting this same exact issue, GM really should be on the hook to fix all of this stuff out of their pocket, not the consumers. Such a shame, GM use to be very good in the early 2000s.
That’s pretty much what happened to mine. When they finally drained the fluid, it was full of metal shavings. I think they said it was my clutch plates 🤷♀️
From all I read and see online, I'm just waiting for my 6L80E to fail in my 2017 Suburban. Currently at 60K miles and just swapped out the transmission cooler thermostat to the 158 degree version. I'm wondering if I should swap out the torque converter for a better one.
Kenny isbot worth it rebiulding the transmission or just replace it? Do you how is for to remove / rebuild and install back cost?
Sounds like you're driving over rumble strips😂
Yeppers, this series 6L80 are wonderful... The owner is in the transmission of the month club until he can dump it. Even with upgraded Sonnax parts they just don't last long before the converter comes apart. Have a 14 and 18 that I service... Owners are too upside down to get out of them. Both are looking at a 3rd transmission in under 200k miles. I will not touch the transmissions with a ten foot pole.
It's crazy to me. At this point you would think that some big brain out there could figure out a way to make them last longer. Thanks for commenting & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
I know multiple people with the 6l80e, including myself, with the stock converter that have no issues. Please don't touch transmissions because these are not hard to rebuilt😂 says alot about you.
Defiantly the torque converter.
Must be those bad drivers in mexico 😂
Sounds like a convertor to me rebuilt broken inside
❤
Well it is a Chevrolet so can't go by power doesn't have any from the factory lol
These are ridiculously weak for automatic transmissions. I have a JATCO cvt (supposed to be the weakest transmission made)with 100k miles and it works fine so far.
common failure on these and nearly always around 100k My shop rents GMC small box truck Replaced many transmissions Friends 2014 GMC truck the trans went about the same miles
Transmission troubles must flush lines and cooler. Local Professional shop rebuilt Dodge for village it lasted a year. I stopped to ask about flush/change my personal truck.. “ no we dont do that.”
many mechanics are against flushing now a days... I am no tranny man though so I don't know for sure why.....but to me it is like working around the gas tank... you slightly move a line here or there and you go to leave and all of a sudden you have a gas leak..... Just like yesterday... doing complete brake lines replacement including brake hoses..... got to fish them through the frame and secure them down.. so got it all done and gas leak.. the line would have lasted for years but with that added pressure and slight twist and bend while fishing the lines and it was enough... I am not sure it that is the idea on NOT flushing or not but it kind of makes sense??
@@TheMamonti1 It's kind of like a hail Mary at this point. I think the damage is done.
