I often come to listen this performance, recalling of my high school days. At that time, I hurried to come back home as soon as finishing classes, not to miss a classical music program on the radio. The signal music of the program was the theme of 1st movement of A Major Quartet(K.298).
My friend Dave is listening to it in a paradise land of Havre-Saint-Pierre while having brunch. I wish I could be with him. Sometimes only sun can travel where we want to go! Luminous music like this somehow connect people over distance. Happy birthday Dave. True my friend, one candle on the cake is enough. We live only once. That word of your mother (who just turned 95) no one's can make it sing better than Mozart! Cheers
What superb sound and perfect harmony!!!Viva Mozart and his immortal music!!! The interpretation is superb with the outstanding musicians. What glorious idea to joint these interpreters!!!
Merci Mozart . Muriel Bousquet
I so happy to have found this! Especially since I will be performing this on NOv. 5 with concertmaster Christina Mok and Principal viola Vladimir Khalikulov and co-principal cello Drew Ford. This is true inspiration...from Rampal whom I was lucky enough to have had a few master classes.
my favorite quartets ! my favorite artists!! my favorite performance!!! But I think Rampal's New York recording in 1969 is a masterpiece. Its performance stands out for its passion and ensemble.
This is the great masters of performance. There is a historical value. Performance itself is also three-dimensional heard the sound of each part is well. It is a good idea to say that the standard performance as an art. It is a great performance.
What a great find! And to have these great musicians playing together without ego and still allowing Mozart to shine! (Listen to Jascha Heifitz play Mozart if you want a comparison)
Mozart may not have cared much for the Flute, but he was never paid properly by the Diutch seamen De Jean and i think if i was Mozart i don't think i would have cared for it much either, this music is beyond beauty and werther he liked the flute or not, he would never have written one bad note in his compositions for it, and i play well ,the flute!!
It's interesting to realize that Mozart generally disliked the flute. But wrote very beautiful music for it nonetheless. These quartets, his Concerto for Flute, Concerto for Flute and Harp, and a number of wonderful sonatas for flute and keyboard.
I have the 1971 recording in my record collection. It has a different cellist and violist. Cello - Leonard Rose Viola - Alexander Schneider I can also tell that this recording does not have any signs of tape hiss or bleed through as it is digitally recorded.
For a man who claim’d that he ‘became quite pow’rless whenever I am oblig’d to compose for any instrument I cannot bear...’ (= the notoriously out of tune 18th century wooden transverse Flute) he sure knew how to hide his disgust ! These quartets are resplendent examples of the chamber-composer’s art from start to finish - what a perfectionist !
Something similar was I experiment when I was young. Every Sunday I did no miss a classical music program of 2 hrs, most of the times ready to save on a my Recorder tape. I remember that one radio station had the 4th movement of Dvorak Symphony #9 as introduction.. very good moments...
Paul H. Cohen Nope, he was getting a healthy commission! LOL Wait. He didn't get paid! And some surmise that his comment about not being able to stand the flute really reflects his disdain for his welshing would-be patron, and less the instrument itself. That said, whatever the case, commission or no commission, if really hated the flute, his ability artfully conceal the fact that he had no love for the instrument is quite amazing and would be another facet of his genius, I guess. Whatever the truth of the matter, I'm quite grateful he was able to work through his antipathy of man and/or woodwind.

This is some of the finest music ever made.

The adagio still moves me to tears. Music should do that.
Oh, man. Thank God for Mozart. Such a perfect balance of lovely melody and elegant phrasing. Only Bach achieved the same perfection.

I love the gentle, easy tempo of the quartets as played here by the masters. No need to show off pyrotechnics as too often done nowadays!
After a long, often frustrating day at work, this is a balm for the soul
Thank you, Prince of Vinyl.
52 minuts of pure gold, yes you know im right

He never told me that
Rampal me impressiona até hoje....
Rampal + Stern + Accardo + Rostropovich = Dream Team.
my thoughts exactly ;o)
it does not get more 'potent' than that, does it?
what a fabulous treat!
hello from Canada!
ALL GONE NOW TO JOIN THE CHOIRS IN HEAVEN
Dude, Accardo is alive and well.
...I think he meant Mozart not Accardo.
i cant wait to go to heaven to listen to the newest compositions of Mozart and Beethoven........
It's interesting to realize that Mozart generally disliked the flute. But wrote very beautiful music for it nonetheless. These quartets, his Concerto for Flute, Concerto for Flute and Harp, and a number of wonderful sonatas for flute and keyboard.
Oh so exquisite, balm for the ear, joy for the soul!!!!
Beautiful ~ it's been in my favourites for a long time. Came to revisit it for it's beauty. THANK you ... again !!!
Mozart 's flute concertos are wonderful to hear .
I'm so happy to hear this recording!
I once have had this LP at the 1970s. I think it is older than 1986.
I have the 1971 recording in my record collection. It has a different cellist and violist.

A great performance. Many thanks.
It's said that Mozart didn't like flute. He wrote these wonderful quartets. Imagine if he did like flutes...
Lovely. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Rampal is so good. He reminds me of when solo flute was king of any ensemble
1. Quartet - Rondeau is amazing! short but sweet!

It's interesting how the Andantino theme of K298 sounds like the entr'acte to Act III of Bizet's Carmen. Lovely recording!
absolutely lovely
great recording ~!
What a lineup!
Maravilla Cósmica!!! Y unos señores geniales interpretándola bellamente!
probably a very perplexing fact that mozart disliked the instrument so much yet wrote the most beautiful for it.
Wonderful - thanks for sharing

NICE!!! Thank you for uploading this!

If we believe the old saw that Mozart disliked the flute he must have suffered composing these lovely quartets.
