During the late 18th century, compositions for string trio with a wind instrument were extremely popular in amateur circles; and in keeping with this highly fashionable trend, Mozart composed four quartets for flute and strings while on a tour of France and Germany with his mother. The 22-year-old composer had lately made the acquaintance of a solo flautist, Johann Baptist Wendling, who was in contact with a rich flute-playing patron. A handsome fee was offered for some concertos and quartets - more than Mozart’s annual salary as a court musician back at home in Salzburg - and so he set to work, completing the first quartet, K385, on Christmas Day 1777.
The other works here may have been composed later - perhaps Mozart ran out of enthusiasm for the project - but they all count as examples of refined chamber music conceived for skilled amateur players and domestic consumption, While hardly as complex a showcase of Mozart’s compositional skills as the string quartets he dedicated to Haydn, all four quartets abounding in gentle wit and good humour, and written not as mini-concertos for flute and string trio but as chamber music for equal partners. Every now and then Mozart touches the sublime, as so often he could, such as the slow variation movement of K285b, which recalls the similar movement in the ‘Gran Partita’ wind serenade in its weightless gravity of expression.
This new recording of the quartets offers a substantial bonus, in the shape of the Oboe Quartet K370 arranged for the ensemble at hand. The performances are led by the Italian flautist Andrea Manco, who in 2003, at just 20 years old, became principal flute of the Teatro Regio orchestra in Turin under the directorship of Gianandrea Noseda.
Since then he has played principal flute for many fine orchestras in Europe and farther afield, and in 2014 he took a solo flute post at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He is joined here by a trio of equally experienced, Itallian-based string players. This album marks his debut on Brilliant Classics.

Con Mozart non si può ascoltare che capolavori. Questo Quartetto per flauto, violino , viola e violoncello è un dialogo fra strumenti che si parlano e si rispondono, con una sonorità solare, come tutta la musica di Mozart che , nell'apparente semplicità, raggiunge la perfezione armonica e contrappuntistica. Linea verticale perfetta, che però non deve farci dimenticare la linea orizzontale della melodia piacevole in tutti i movimenti, non privi di variazioni , non facili, soprattutto per il flauto. Dolce e romantico il secondo movimento , con richiami bucolici , tipici del flauto , strumento ,ab antiquo , dei pastori.( Virgilio , rivolto e Titiro ...meditaris avena).

Erfreuliche und wunderschöne Interpretation vierer fein oder perfekt komponierten Quartette im lebhften Tempo mit herrlichem Ton der Flöte, seidigem Ton der Violine, mildem Ton der Bratsche und tiefem Ton des Violoncellos. Die intime und perfekt entsprechende Miteinanderwirkung zwischen den vier Virtuosen ist wahrlich ergreifend. Einfach wunderbar!

That melody at 6:50 is one of the loveliest things Mozart wrote - like the second movement of his duo concertante for violin and viola or the second movement in his piano concerto number 23 in A - bittersweet and poignant and profound.

В первый раз слушала именно эти вещи, по опыту знаю, что на первое прослушивание просто услаждаю слух, а если слушать второй, третий и далее раз, то открываются такие красоты, нюансы, такие испытываешь разные эмоции, словно забралась в сокровищницу и там обнаруживаешь драгоценности. Я ведь не знаю даже нотной грамоты, но переслушала огромное колич музыкальных произведений. Моцарт для меня на одном из самых почетных мест. Чем больше слушаешь, ткм больше поражаешься его безграничному гению. Спасибо за запись

The second movement of the 1st quartet reminds me a mixture of Vivaldi's slow movements of his concerti mixed with Pergolesi's style. Beautiful...

@@datetley It's only my perception. Don't be so ironical. And don't despise Vivaldi's talent and value. It's greater than it's supposed (And I guess Bach was not stupid in his musical appreciations when he studied Vivaldi's pieces) And, besides, not always Stravinsky was right in his "perceptions" about other composers...

I love this Masterpiece of Mozart!!!
Very smart of them to adapt the Oboe Quartet for flute, adding it to the four masterpieces for flute and strings. It works perfectly well, not only because the oboe and flute have the same pitch range, but because Mozart's compositions (like those of the Baroque composers who preceded him) are not wedded to specific instruments, and thus can easily be adapted to almost any instruments.
Oh, yes? Try playing the horn concertos on anything other than French horn or Flugel horn, or maybe trumpet. It would be laughable.
@@DieFlabbergast As long as the instrument being used for an adaptation has the same range as the original I can't see the harm in exploring the expressive possibilities of a substitution.
On the contrary, most of Mozart's compositions are expertly tailored to the unique qualities of the instruments he writes for, and even to the talents of the specific players he had in mind.
The oboe and flute were the closest he ever came to them being interchangeable, and he did adapt his oboe concerto to the flute because he needed to fulfill a commission for two flute concertos and couldn't be bothered coming up with two brand new pieces.

These quartets are, however, exquisitely pleasant, maintaining a constant level of delight. This is what Mozart was able to do better than any other composer, before or since.
