Here's a new tutorial on an improved version of this tutorial! It can save you a lot of resources and fixes a lot of possible issues this design may have had: ruclips.net/video/n-DotUTvSjs/видео.html
FOR BEDROCK EDITION- 0:38 if the dispenser does not spit items out, put the hopper on the side of the dispenser, add a block on the back of the dispenser, and put a redstone dust on that block and on top of the dispenser edit: 4:12 also if you don't want to put a whole stack of diamonds inside, you can put 1 diamond and 11 named items in each slot
A couple tips: You can make the water streams any length 2-8 blocks (including source blocks) You can replace the pressure plates with signs. (put the signs on the sides of the blocks) Also don't use a dispenser use a dropper.
Mysticat it’s always refreshing to see a creator that responds to improvement type comments. Btw this video is really cool, I’m going to use it in my world once I can get the resources
This guy does the best tutorials, no annoying loud music, the pace isn't too fast or slow, he doesn't take an absurd amount of time to tell us what the build needs, and he's not too over enthusiastic.
for anyone with problems with the speed at wich items flow through the stream, if its too fast the hoppers will let it through and it goes to the trash chest here's a fix: instead of pressure plates on the ice blocks use signs, alternating the side where you put them, the signs will force the items to remain in the middle and slow down a little so the hoppers can register them and pick them up
I was having issues getting my dispenser to trigger when items are put in the chest. In this video, the red stone dust is shown as "dots", but in my world i had to change the "dots" to the "Spider" configuration. For other people who are bad at red stone, you can change the red stone by right clicking it. With that said, red stone can be frustrating if you dont know what you're doing. Try to stay positive and when something isn't working. Try tweaking things, little by little, and you might just figure it out! Good luck.
EDIT: Thanks to Kwipla for pointing out that you should change the sorting hoppers to: [1 item] [41 random item] [random item] [random item] [random item] so that you don't waste 41 of the items you're sorting in the hopper! @@shadowblitz8421 At 4:10 Instead of the last 4 slots with just 1 acacia pressure plate (your [random item]) put 41 of them in the 2nd slot. This prevents 41 of the item you're sorting from sitting in the hopper. This buildup has to do with how comparators and redstone signal strengths work.
FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE MECHANICS OF THIS BUILD AND WHY IT WORKS, I will attempt to simplify this: Comparators put out a redstone signal charge at a level proportional to how full the hopper is. This means if the hopper is full, the comparator attached to it in this fashion puts out a charge of 15(full charge) (it can travel across 15 blocks before the signal stops) If the hopper is empty, the comparator attached to it puts out a charge of 0 (no charge) . If the hopper is about half full, it will put out a charge of 7 or 8 (half charge). Now let's take a ratio of how full the hoppers are when filled up as he filled them (1 full stack of the item desired, 1 stone in each other slot) 64 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 68 maximum hopper capacity is 64 x 5 = 320 68/320 = .2125 Now to find how much redstone signal this will send out, we take the ratio and multiply it by the total signal strength possible: .2125 x 15 = 3.1875 This means that the signal can reach up to 3 blocks away. If you notice after he puts the items in the hopper, they all go down to 41 before they stop. The reason for this is understandable if we do the same process above to calculate the signal strength ratio provided at 41 items. 41 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 45 45/360 = .140625 .140625 x 15 = 2.109375 This means the signal can reach up to 2 blocks away. If you go back to watch how he designs the first section, he connects a repeater to a block with a redstone torch. This means if the repeater starts to receive a signal, the redstone torch will be turned off. While the redstone torch is on, the hopper it is next to becomes LOCKED. A locked hopper cannot drop or receive items. The connection to the receiver is 3 blocks away from the comparator. So logically, when the comparator starts putting out a signal strength of 3 or more (more items inside it), the repeater goes on, the redstone torch goes off, and the hoppers become unlocked. (the flow of items downwards to the chests continues) And once the top hopper goes down to a signal strength of 2, the repeater goes off, the redstone torch goes on, and the hoppers become locked again, keeping your items from dropping through. This is why also just having 11 of each item in the other 4 slots and 1 of the item you want sorted into your hopper works as well, because it will go down to 45 total before switching off. Hopefully this clarifies things for those confused instead of making it more confusing. Happy crafting :)

Hello I’m having the same problem but I doubled checked your points and my placement item still go straight to the chests, any idea why that’s causing it? 😭 (edited: nvm my red stone torches were wrongly placed 😅)
The problem is that if you are sorting a more common resource, the slot with one item will fill to 64, unpowering the hoppers nearby, which ruins the sorter. If it overflows with this setup, it will break. You could however have a air space in between so it could not reach across to the adjacent module. But if it is diamonds, unless you are really rich, not gonna be a problem to have less than 41 of the chosen item.
@@pigeonmalin2321 when I say overflow, I mean the chest below fills up and begins to fill up the first hopper slot. For example, on my gold farm, if the rotten flesh chest is full, it will fill the first sorting slot up to 64 which will not power the next unit over, because I have only 4 sorting items, and all extra stuff will go into the trash chest. However, if I had 41 sorting items instead of 4, when the first slot filled up combined with the 41 already in the hopper, the comparator would give out a signal strength that is enough to unblock the sorting hoppers adjacent to it in the next unit over. Hope this helps :)

Lovely, quick and easy. Few things I'd change here. 1: Use a dropper. Especially if your system is for a skeleton farm. 2: Don't put the hoppers directly below the water stream, it will clog up on items which over time can cause quite a lot of issues. Instead put them to one side, next to the water source. The reason why most item sorters are a bit bulkier, are to prevent these things from happening. I could explain what else to do in a comment, but I feel that Mysti would be able to dive a little deeper into item sorting, and make another video with a slightly better design.
After playing around with this setup, I find it better if you alternated the direction of the red stone/chests. If you alternate then you can have 44 items that will be place holders in the hoppers (divided up between slots 2-5) and will only require 1 of whatever you are trying to sort.
quick tip: if you find that items are going too fast and it cause them to skip their designted hopper. try placing magma blocks under a water source to slow the items down.
I have seen this sorting system setup before, however your build explanation and step by step was easy to follow and very well thought out. Worth a sub well done!
If your hopper stays at 64 items and doesn't go down to 41 make sure you've placed redstone dust on the backmost block of the system (the one behind the repeater).
Short, on-point intro, gets right into building, easy to listen to voice, video has sensible timestamps, is short and concise _and_ features an explanation of how the circuit works. 10/10 Amazing!
I wouldn't reccommend using a pressure plate on the ice block, as when the plate is pressed it prevents the hoppers before and after the ice block from taking any items.
For some reason it’s still not working. I followed everything in the beginning then I put the repeater down but it still isn’t spitting the items out. Idk what’s stopping it😔
This was really helpful, at first the dispenser didn’t shoot because I’m in bedrock edition but then I made a different way of powering the dispenser and it works pretty well it’s a bit bigger but full credit goes to Mysticat:)
Awesome! Great job adjusting it for Bedrock. I'm sure sharing how you did so could help a lot of people (I assume you just extended the dust and pointed it at the dispenser)
I recently got really back into Minecraft and since then I've started a new Survival World, I'm on around Day 200 and I've always wanted to try this and so that's what I did. I am not a red stone freak or anything I don't know much, but wow is this cool. I took around 5 hours making this with 63 chests (3 Chests for each item, 7 chests per bucket of water, and 3 of those 7 sets of chests) and boy did it turn out great! This is my first ever big red stone contraption in survival and it works phenomenally, like I still cannot believe how cool this is! You earned my like and especially a new subscriber awesome vid!
Note: If you put 1 gap between the Hoppers and Chests, you can put 44 Fillerblocks in the 4 slots, to make the sorted item go down to 1 so it doesn't keep 41 of the item you want to sort in it. This also prevents it from activating other sorters if it fills up (With the gap), otherwise you would need to keep 41 of the item in the hopper, and make a incinerator to remove overflow, so it doesn't activate the other hoppers in the system.
Every single part of this had smarter solutions to them than the ones I'd been using and how I had built my prototype. SO HAPPY I checked this out before I'd finished my design!
@@mysticat hey you prob won’t see this but I have a question when I put the filler items in my hoppper they go into the chest and won’t stay there as filler
Works as of today (Nov. 6, 2020) on PS4 Bedrock Edition! I made a stacked full-auto villager/bee powered farm and wanted to have a sorting system because it got painful pretty quickly to empty the collection chests myself. This worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
I followed the steps to a t, and whenever i try and put the items I want in the hopper with the named items, all of the items including the named ones, go immediately through to the chest.
Then you must not have followed it to the t. Do you have the torches? Are the comparators pointed in the right direction? What about the hoppers? The repeaters? Just check it over.
Idk if you still want an answer to that one but you cant place over a certain amount into the hopper at once for example 32 items in the first slot of the hopper breaks all the other locks but if you just let the items flow there through water you are fine
Does anyone know what to do if your item that you want to sort doesn’t go down to 41. I put in a stack of acacia pressure plates slot apart from the first but my iron bars in this case, didn’t go down to 41
The first time I tried putting the stuff in the hopper it just sat there. tired fixing it and now I just puts all the items in the hopper lol I really suck at Redstone Edit: its kind of working now It stops at 47 and not 41 but besides that there are no other problems Edit 2: now its not working anymore Edit 3 I'm done for now but i will keep anyone that sees this comment updated
thank you so much!! and thanks for explaining why certain redstone components are used, i always feel like a dummy following tutorials having no idea why or how any of it works so this was a nice change ☺️
Anyone else having major issues with the hoppers? Every time I try putting pressure plates into the hopper, they just fall right into the chests or hopper below
Double-check this: 1) The blocks with contact to redstone can transmit redstone signals. 2) You put the redstone torches as shown. 3) The top hoppers point into empty space and not down. 4) You play Java edition
I always wondered how pewds made his storage system able to put each type of tool in its place and now I fully understand. Plus, I didn't waste lots of time to learn it and there a no subscription breaks! New sub!
i do a lil different. when you use 3 redstone dust long from comparator so it needs 41 item filter, and i use only 2 dust so it only need 22 item filter. for a cheaper design solution. it save 1 redstone dust and 19 item filter. C comparator B block D redstone dust R repeater T redstone torch H Hopper X airblock/hole H C B D H B X B D X T B R B X X X B so, it design it self not much different only move up 1 block and leave a hole. works for mega project to mega sorting, but not sure for good design because a hole it self hahaha so eyesore for me..
Assuming I didn't make a mistake: I tried this version out and after some time troubleshooting I couldn't get it to work. One sort worked but when I tried to sort another chest, it was removing everything (the 18 item filter and 'filler items'). I changed to the video version (moved the B down and added an extra redstone dust), and it is working correctly.
I am quite new to Redstone and Minecraft in General but i built this quite big and I am in love with it. Although I ran into two small Problems: 1) When using pressure plates on the ice blocks it caused the Items to "jump" over the first hopper after (the one with the water source on it). Maybe its just beacuse my server is laggy or sth. but if you have the same problem, signs instead of pressure plates worked perfectly for me. 2) i tried to fill the hoppers like this:[1|11|11|11|11] with the sortable item sitting in the first slot. This seems nice at first, because you dont have 41 Items sitting in the hopper, but get all inside of the chest, BUT: when larger quantities of the selected item would get into the hopper (like half a stack or so) it would cause the comparator to send a stronger redstone signal, which caused all the hoppers 1 and 2 blocks next to that hopper to empty themselves, collapsing the entire system. What i want to say: do it like its done in the video, and fill the hopper like this: [41|1|1|1|1] If anything about my explanation is wrong (especially the part with the comparator, as I said I´m quite new), pls let me know, but I hope this will help others realizing their problem if this isn´t working at first.
thank you, I've watched a few guides and they didn't really go into detail about what is happening. Your explanation was clear, to the point and it makes sense to me
I added my farms to this thing and it keeps messing up it'll work for a while then suddenly my blocker blocks get flushed down the system and all hell breaks loose.
@@mraico25 I gave up but try putting 41 carpets or whatever in the second slot in the case because I think that worked but I had other problems as well. Also, the Redstone comparators might be facing in the wrong direction, good luck lmao

is there a way to make it so multiple items can be stored in each chest to save space and resources? i.e. oak logs and oak planks sort into the same chest edit: if there is a way to have multiple (in the example it's 2) would there be a way to have more than 5? 5 is the max per each hopper so i was wondering if you could have multiple items in a chest, would max be 5?
I mostly just wanted to figure out the numbers for hopper filling, I don't know what the deal is with 41 but I do find it interesting :0 This video's very short so I ended up learning extra stuff! Thank you!
I've built this a couple times, the biggest thing you guys need to pay attention to is the direction of the repeaters and comparators in both the sorting system and dropper system.

This means if the hopper is full, the comparator attached to it in this fashion puts out a charge of 15(full charge) (it can travel across 15 blocks before the signal stops)
If the hopper is empty, the comparator attached to it puts out a charge of 0 (no charge) .
If the hopper is about half full, it will put out a charge of 7 or 8 (half charge).
Now let's take a ratio of how full the hoppers are when filled up as he filled them (1 full stack of the item desired, 1 stone in each other slot)
64 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 68
maximum hopper capacity is 64 x 5 = 320
68/320 = .2125
Now to find how much redstone signal this will send out, we take the ratio and multiply it by the total signal strength possible:
.2125 x 15 = 3.1875
This means that the signal can reach up to 3 blocks away.
If you notice after he puts the items in the hopper, they all go down to 41 before they stop.
The reason for this is understandable if we do the same process above to calculate the signal strength ratio provided at 41 items.
41 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 45
45/360 = .140625
.140625 x 15 = 2.109375
This means the signal can reach up to 2 blocks away.
(the flow of items downwards to the chests continues)
And once the top hopper goes down to a signal strength of 2, the repeater goes off, the redstone torch goes on, and the hoppers become locked again, keeping your items from dropping through.
This is why also just having 11 of each item in the other 4 slots and 1 of the item you want sorted into your hopper works as well, because it will go down to 45 total before switching off.
Hopefully this clarifies things for those confused instead of making it more confusing.

if you find that items are going too fast and it cause them to skip their designted hopper. try placing magma blocks under a water source to slow the items down.
I have seen this sorting system setup before, however your build explanation and step by step was easy to follow and very well thought out.
Worth a sub well done!
I have a new version ^.^ welcome!
If your hopper stays at 64 items and doesn't go down to 41 make sure you've placed redstone dust on the backmost block of the system (the one behind the repeater).

Great video, I used a dropped instead of a dispenser due to arrows. Great job, thank you!
This keeps racing in my head, "OH NO- I SHOULD HAVE BUILT THIS HIGHER!"

Mysticat: "...but it's highly unlikely you're gonna have a sorting section for every single item in the game..."
Mumbo: Why not?
I wouldn't reccommend using a pressure plate on the ice block, as when the plate is pressed it prevents the hoppers before and after the ice block from taking any items.
This tutorial is the best i watched almost 20 item sorting videos every one is complicated until i found this one simple and easy to understand
Thank you for making the least obnoxious MC tutorial possible. This was very easy to follow.
Note:
The "filler" item has to be stackable, so you can't use swords or bows or armor or whatever.
Guys if you build this in bedrock edition make sure you put a repeater behind the dispenser so it will power
I was about to say this ain’t working then I did that and looked at the comments to see if I was the only one with the problem 😂
For some reason it’s still not working. I followed everything in the beginning then I put the repeater down but it still isn’t spitting the items out. Idk what’s stopping it😔
Nvm I’m just slow I got it
Nah I'm lost my repeater flashes but the dispenser don't spit
I just made a different redstone clock
This was really helpful, at first the dispenser didn’t shoot because I’m in bedrock edition but then I made a different way of powering the dispenser and it works pretty well it’s a bit bigger but full credit goes to Mysticat:)
Awesome! Great job adjusting it for Bedrock. I'm sure sharing how you did so could help a lot of people (I assume you just extended the dust and pointed it at the dispenser)
Mysticat can you do bedrock
It takes up a bit more space though but it works
This is the link for the video I made for the people who are having trouble on bedrock edition ruclips.net/video/4AyK0ayXxWc/видео.html
@@mysticat yes please explain how you extended it. im a very novice redstone user so im very confused why my dispenser isn't firing my items
You earned my like and especially a new subscriber awesome vid!
bro this is really helpful bro, man, I don't know what to say but thank you so much
Note: If you put 1 gap between the Hoppers and Chests, you can put 44 Fillerblocks in the 4 slots, to make the sorted item go down to 1 so it doesn't keep 41 of the item you want to sort in it.
This also prevents it from activating other sorters if it fills up (With the gap), otherwise you would need to keep 41 of the item in the hopper, and make a incinerator to remove overflow, so it doesn't activate the other hoppers in the system.
Pewdiepie just gave you a shoutout)) congrats man)
Pewdiepie shoutout gang OUH!!!!
Every single part of this had smarter solutions to them than the ones I'd been using and how I had built my prototype. SO HAPPY I checked this out before I'd finished my design!

That intro tho absolutely perfect right to the point in under 10 seconds
Akitolight bruh it’s still not working for me
Akitolight it’s taking all of it not one by one can you help
i had the same problem, make sure the hoppers are locked and that the top row of hoppers are connected in the right way.
I put in a stack of acacia pressure plates slot apart from the first but my iron bars in this case, didn’t go down to 41
found a solution? mine dont go to 41 it takes the whole stack
@@bollarna then you do it wrong

Edit 2: now its not working anymore
Edit 3 I'm done for now but i will keep anyone that sees this comment updated
I have the exact same
This is probably the most clear and straight to the point tutorial I've probably seen.
thank you so much!! and thanks for explaining why certain redstone components are used, i always feel like a dummy following tutorials having no idea why or how any of it works so this was a nice change ☺️
How did you get the pressure plates to stay in the hopper
Anyone else having major issues with the hoppers? Every time I try putting pressure plates into the hopper, they just fall right into the chests or hopper below
Double-check this:
1) The blocks with contact to redstone can transmit redstone signals.
2) You put the redstone torches as shown.
3) The top hoppers point into empty space and not down.
4) You play Java edition
And because of pewdiepie I finally know this is possible. And i want to try it out.. tnx for the tutorial 😅😅

probably the second minecraft farms tutorial ytuber i can actually rely on
I always wondered how pewds made his storage system able to put each type of tool in its place and now I fully understand. Plus, I didn't waste lots of time to learn it and there a no subscription breaks! New sub!

Lock the hopper
@@zackbevacqua4413 what does that mean
@@lucas9992 you have to power it with a redstone torch
i do a lil different. when you use 3 redstone dust long from comparator so it needs 41 item filter, and i use only 2 dust so it only need 22 item filter. for a cheaper design solution. it save 1 redstone dust and 19 item filter.
C comparator
B block
D redstone dust
R repeater
T redstone torch
H Hopper
X airblock/hole
H C B D
H B X B D
X T B R B
X X X B
so, it design it self not much different only move up 1 block and leave a hole. works for mega project to mega sorting, but not sure for good design because a hole it self hahaha so eyesore for me..
Interesting, it's pretty similar but if it saves filter items then it should be better
Kuka tuli lakolta😂

I am quite new to Redstone and Minecraft in General but i built this quite big and I am in love with it. Although I ran into two small Problems:
1) When using pressure plates on the ice blocks it caused the Items to "jump" over the first hopper after (the one with the water source on it).
What i want to say: do it like its done in the video, and fill the hopper like this: [41|1|1|1|1]
If anything about my explanation is wrong (especially the part with the comparator, as I said I´m quite new), pls let me know, but I hope this will help others realizing their problem if this isn´t working at first.
thank you, I've watched a few guides and they didn't really go into detail about what is happening. Your explanation was clear, to the point and it makes sense to me
I added my farms to this thing and it keeps messing up it'll work for a while then suddenly my blocker blocks get flushed down the system and all hell breaks loose.

It does. For bedrock you’ll have to put the hopper on the side of the dispenser with a block behind the dispenser with a piece of red stone on top of it then put a piece of red stone on top of the dispenser

How you do it it is place a block behind the dispenser and put red stone on that block

Useful tip: There needs to be 45 items in the hopper, so you can 4x11 filter items, and just one item that you want to be sorted
say you want like to sort stone, cobblestone, and other stone blocks in the same chest. instead of using filter blocks could you replace those with those blocks you want in the same bin. would doing 11 of each still work?

It has something to do with the comparator output. It means that if one more item is added, the comparator will increase its signal strength by one.

I love this, I've been trying to find a sorting system for a while that was simple to make and easier on resources. instructions were clear as well which is not too common with these types of videos. thank you!
Just a little tip. To make the item flow past where the water ends, use packed ice instead of regular ice. I find it's more reliable and it doesn't melt.
