  • This tutorial gives information about the different alignment tips, beginner tips and the benefits of Downward Facing Dog pose. You can read more about the pose on the website www.ekhartyoga...
But most of all it invites an exploration within your own body to feel what works and doesn't, so you can find the variation of the pose work that works for your body. I hope that everyone can find this useful for your own practice and for your students if you are a yoga teacher.

I’m so glad I came across this. It’s very refreshing to hear you say that it’s about an individuals comfortability rather than following some strict rule of thumb. I have recently gotten into yoga and this made me think about cats and cows (I think that’s what’s it’s called lol, the table position). I’ve heard countless times that it’s important for your shoulders to be stacked directly above your wrists but I find this extremely uncomfortable as it puts too much pressure on my wrists so I will be true to myself and do what feels most comfortable for me. God bless u

Thank you thank you thank you! I’ve practiced yoga off and on throughout my life, and I know first hand that some alignment instructions felt very unstable and even scary to my overly extended joint/tendons. Recently, I’ve been practicing yoga every day, and my arm and shoulder muscles have been hurting (in downward dog) in strange, concerning ways - almost like the muscles are scraping against tendon when I try to get into “correct” posture(?). I’ve been trying to replicate the past instructions I remembered, and I am so grateful to be released from trying to rotate in a way that is painful, and even potentially damaging. My gratitude to you Esther

Thank you Kristina - I hope that you find ways to make the poses work for your body instead of the other way around - that's what we're all about at EkhartYoga - I would recommend this program if you'd like more like this www.ekhartyoga.com/programs/114/functional-yoga-program

Great stuff - sometimes wish my yoga practice would have started with the technique details like this for at least the basic set of positions although it is an ongoing journey and learning happens with every step.

I am interested in knowing your thoughts about the proper distance between hands and feet in downward dog. In my practice I can't reach the floor with my heels, unless I short the distance between feet and hands. When I am in this modified pose, I can feel it as relaxing and enlonging for my shoulders and back as most of the teachers claim downward dog might feel. At the same time I am aware I am not working so much on increasing flexibility in my hamstrings and I also need to adjust my feet back when I transition to plank. Which of the two versions (longest with higher heels or shorter but with heels down) do you recommend for the best improvements? Thanks for your videos...you are the best!
