Kelfie b I can’t tell you how much I hate this pose, is it because my shoulders are so inflexible or my hamstrings? I don’t know but either way it’s pure torture and discomfort.
Richard Ortiz it took me like a good year to learn to love it lol I think more important than the flexibility is the muscle strength eventually you get stronger in that pose and learn to distribute the weight. Even if you’re very strong, muscles can be weak in new poses I think
Richard Ortiz definitely pure torture for me physically and mentally ( I even tell to myself I hate life in this pose 😤😂) What I cannot figure out is I ve been doing pilates and fitness for more than 10 yrs.. unbeliavable result for me, I cannot believe this pose is a resting pose, I cant even stay more than 5 secs without hating anything 😂😱
Aleph 😂 I think I can relate in chair pose. I feel like crying if the instructor makes us do it lol. And I use my legs all day why do they feel so weak in that pose?
Kelfie b oh that pose is another killer one 😫 I asked and searched the answers of these why questions to myself a lot.. I mean when I see the People once a week coming to class and doing nothing about stretching/ pilates/ weight working but they were suceeding in these poses and Cowface arms pose , I was very much demotivated and had very much pain trying them so I decided to quit doing yoga 😔 In quarantine I wanted to start again .. coming to the answers I am searching why I cannot succeed, Yoga needs everday a lot of practice I think , I believe it is so related to stretching.and some poses ( cowface) needs genetically some longer muscles I dont know. I tell to myself some things are about the structure of the body + Stretching + practice 😣
I really used to hate this posture so much when I first started several months ago. My shoulders and wrists screamed everytime. But I fell in love with the transition of curling my toes under and lifting my hips up high. That's what did it. Steady practice made my shoulders and wrists stronger. I don't need a man to open a pickle jar for me anymore!
Oh my God thank you so much for this tip! I tried it today and my hands didn't slip for the first time ever while doing this pose! Curling the toes was Soo helpful.
@@janets7291 honestly I don't think I have the completely flat back, but I know that over time the pose got easier to do. I got my friend to take a photo of me to see how I looked doing the downward dog and realized I was hunched. So I've been conscious about that and try to be "flat" and I guess being mindful about it is the first step? Oh and my heels still don't completely reach the ground but I hope one day they will.
@@Kimi_A23 My problem is I look at these 23 year old incredibly fit young ladies and I want to look Just Like Them RIGHT AWAY and I guess I have to be patient with my 60 year old body. Thanks for the tip about taking a picture! Lots of love from a fellow Covid-19 shut in!
@@janets7291 oh yeah for sure, impatience is my vice too! But interestingly doing yoga has actually made me more patient over time, so I'm grateful for that. Little bit at a time I guess, and then we will get to our version of right! Love to you too! Stay safe and healthy in these strange times.
Through the practice of yoga, you can learn to focus on the present moment and let go of worries about the past and future. It's like a moving meditation that can leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Thanks for the instructions.
My wrists and shoulders used to shake and give a burning feeling when i first tried this pose out.I couldn't hold the pose for long at all.But i kept doing and believe me guys this pose is one of the best.I feel so much stable in my palms, wrists and shoulders and feel a lot space to move around and can hold the pose for long comfortably.Thank you so much Adriene for these beautiful, enjoyable, detailed videos made with love.I fell in love with Yoga because of you.Sending lots of love.May you be happy, healthy and blessed!
I actually enjoy Adriene's yoga tutorial videos! Perhaps she makes me feel happy and energetic with her fun and quirky personality. Because most of the yogis I found on RUclips or I met in real life all sound very deliberately elegant and soft? And they make me feel a bit of pressure as if I don't belong here if I get excited and having big smile on my face. I don't know how to explain that and I'm not sure if this even makes sense to anyone. But the point is Adriene makes yoga fun and relatable again!
1 of 2~ Yes, my friend, hasta bandha or the hand lock is vital and will help! This lock is like a suction cup image- grounding down through all parts of the hand but then drawing energy up, like straws through the arms and engaging the body. Integration! To ground, press into all knuckle joints! Spread hands wide and have fingerprints firm.
Today was the first time I actually felt what it feels like to externally rotate the shoulders. It was such a small, subtle moment, but immediately after I did it I went WOOOWWW, so this is it! I love Downward dog, it's such a grounding posture that makes you feel strong and confident, and there's so many variations and details about posture so getting into it always feels new!
2 years in and downward dog is still a learning point for me. Thank you for a wonderful step by step refresher on really how to enjoy and embrace the posture.

You are so right about this downward facing dog, needing to be comfortable in this position. My wrists are very fussy after working a desk job at the computer for years, and years and years!!
Here we are in 2021, I'm into ywa for a year, but loving coming back to do older vids and foundations. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't do yoga today. You are my trainer, my therapist, my friend and biggest inspiration. Namaste. 🙏
Thank you Adriene! I’m two months into your videos, practising every morning. This is definitely my favourite pose, finally my heels touch the ground! Wahoo! X
This is the most difficult position for me right now. I'm getting serious sacrum pain to the point of collapse on the way up. Going through the steps slowly like in the video into this posture have definitely helped along with lots of hip stretching and sacrum massages.
You are just wonderful. Sometimes it's good to go back to the child's mind and learn from the base of basic postures to avoid injury. I find too many people doing basic postures without actually feeling them and searching what feels nice and why that pose is there!
I recently started a new job, in which I am constantly using my arms and upper body. I knew my arms needed some additional love, but I didn't realize just how much until I did this video and my arms barely made it through. So not only did I get a good stretch, but it cued me in that I am not taking proper care of my upper body to counter the demands I'm placing on it. Ah, serendipity. :)
I can't believe my GF and I have been watching you for EIGHT years since this is one of the first videos we ever watched from this channel! Still loving your videos in 2020.

2 of 2~ Keep the thumb and index finger down and plan the fleshy part of the hand between the thumb and index firmly. This may take practice to maintain but in no time you will see a difference & find ease! In time see if you can take your bandha further by activating the heel of your hand next at the wrist, lifting it up ever so slightly so that you can engage and take more weight of wrists. I will do a video on this so we can better see! Hope this helps! Please let me know how it goes! xo, A
What about if the *thumb tendons* are the problem? Best for me seems to me "spider hands", or if my palm is down, not that 90 degree angle, especially not with a bunch of weight on it. But I'm mostly guessing, going by finding what *doesn't* feel good. :-) I'm replying to an old message, but very interested in this subject. Thanks again for all you do in these lovely videos.
I love Blue! I just want to say that I have been subscribed to your channel for over a year now. You are my first real intro to yoga. I like how you let the audience know its okay to not conquer a pose right away. This is what keeps me motivated during my practice. So keep up the amazing work!!! I love what you do.
I've been having a time with downward dog since getting back into things, lots of tightness behind the knees but after watching your video I feel so much better with this pose, thank you!
I've just taken a pause (paws) from 30 day Revolution to check on my downward dog. Adriene you look so young in this clip with your hair so short :) Like a good wine, you're improving with age. Keep up the healthy living. Much love from Australia xx

Ruth! Try the hasta bandha lock I just wrote about above, I think this could help you or at the very least will be good exploration. Its a marvelous too! Also- no you are not doing anything wrong. Remember everything is connected - the numbness could be coming from shoulders or lower back. Its all a process! Love, A
2021 recently completed 30 day Breath. I fell in love with yoga, I fell in love with downward facing dog, I honestly love love love this pose, even more so without pedaling my feet. Sometimes it helps give my energy somewhere to go! I just love it. I am so envious of everyone that's known of this AMAZINGGGG human I only just discovered. I wish I would have known about you and could have been following you all this time! I started yoga finally by typing in beginners yoga and found Adrienne by the grace of God it was right as she had put out breath. Instead of diving in head first I did her beginners video once a day for a week like she suggested. I did the lower back video a few times as well then started breath a few days after everyone else. I stuck with it every day . I'm a 31 year old single mother of a six and three year old girl. I work four days a week and despite even being sick then taking care of my two sick girls I didn't miss one day. It made me feel better, I anticipated it. There was no dread, if anything I was so happy and proud of myself for taking that time for me. On the last day 'begin' I cried with Adrienne getting all emotional. The video was magical. I felt life I had bonded with her and get guidance. I could hear her words through the whole video. When in plank I still whispered I am strong. I reminded myself to breathe, tried to internally coach myself the way she would and was so sad when it was over even though it wasn't truly over... It had just began. I'm continuing my journey, incorporating yoga in my life. I can't wait for more 30 day videos. I would love love love to see more guided videos for children!! I want to involve them so badly 🤩🥰😍💝 Thank you so incredibly much Adrienne, for everything. For all your hard work, dedication, for being such an incredible human whom I truly adore 🥰🥰🥰 The whole world needs to know you 🥰🥰💝
Was told to try this today after I pinched a nerve in my back at work this was fairly challenging but I do feel some pain relief so I think I may make this into a regular thing thanks!
it’s 2021 now. i just randomly chose one of 30 days yoga programs of you, revolution. it’s my 21st day today. i just had to skip 3 days because of unexpected situations about my work, but revolution program is the only thing i actually commited recently and i take it very seriously to meet you on the mat. BUT... i can not. even. do the downward dog. that’s a legit motivation killer for me, still not being able to do the pose makes me feel like i will never get the best of the experience.
thank you doctor Adriene for teaching me legs up the wall i like alot feels good totally i do it everyday I'm 70 and it feels nice it really helps with knee problems kinda takes away the pain thank you Gilbert
I've never been to a yoga class and have been practicing through videos for a couple of months now. I recently became obsessed with yoga and while doing my routine I have always hated this position. It is so hard for me to place the spine straight with my arms and my tail up instead of the lower back. But I've tried and read a lot of how to do it and watched videos. It was until today that I found yours and thank you Adriane, finally found someone who explains it so easy and I am starting to get into the pose and enjoy it little by little thanks to you! :)
Thank you, Adriene. I needed to go over this, and I'm glad I did, and I plan to keep doing so till I have it perfect, I knew I was doing it wrong. Back when I used to take classes this and cobra were the two poses I got corrected on the most, harder for me than a lot of the more difficult poses. So, Thank you, finding your channel has changed my life. 💚
I also love the puppy pose, never thought I would be able to place my forehead on the floor, usually I place my chin on the mat and just go with it, thank you Adriene for this wonderful practice and couple of action points ☺️ Namaste 🙏🏻
Day 146 (part 2!) of the current run. Had a bit of a knot in a leg muscle so I was extremely mindful while doing this - it actually helped tremendously. I’ve done yoga long enough to see this as a rest pose, especially after a length of a bunch of lunge and warrior variations.
Adriene, HAD to come here to say THANK YOU! THANK YOU, and THANK YOU! Im also a yoga teacher, not practising for a long time at all, but I did my yoga teacher trainning in Bali and had come back to Brazil for after living a few years abroad... and I see how people are in need of some connection here, as you said on your introduction for the 30 days... if someday someone said to me I would be having a yoga channel online, I would laugh for sure... Now here I'm... starting the same what you are doing in my country... for LOVE! Im so glad I can watch your vídeos and get so many good advices that I had to come here to say you are AMAZING and very inspiring... you know that are many many people doing it out there, but its so rare to see someone so humble, so unique, your yoga its just your style, you laugh, you sing, you dont care, and I think this is just awesome! Keep on track, hopefully we are gonna meet one day :)
Hey Adriene, can you show up a video on upward facing dog (couldn't find one). BTW, I LOVE your videos! You've got a 60 yo who never exercised her entire life (really :-( ) on the mat every day for the last 115 days! Woo-hoo!
Yupp, if I do this static style, I curse everyone. I knew I’d finally find a tip that made sense and let me work into it. The pedaling of the feet is a great tip, I’m chronically tight, and since I’m a cyclist, the pedaling won me over. Great video, and very relaxing voice/tone/pace. Thumbs up.
I had expected this pose to be very difficult (from its reputation), but I was surprised to find it was actually quite easy for me, and feels very relaxing. Just goes to show all our bodies are different! (Now Upward Dog is another story entirely...)
SO helpful, Adriene - I love your encouragement to move and feel good. I've always been the muscle-shaking-stressed-out-static-pose-holder in this position :)
I am so grateful I just found you. You posted this video in 2012 and I’m here in 2020, in the middle of COVID-19 quarantine, and you just brought me back the hope of being able to learn yoga. Right now I can’t do downward facing dog pose and I feel I can’t do yoga because of it. I could say I hate this pose but right now I’m very motivated to try it again. Thank you so so much!
Just recently discovered your videos through your "yoga for when you are sick" and am starting your 30 days of yoga challenge. Wanted more practice for this pose and it's very invigorating, but it was hard to stay moving throughout and i did have to take a few rests during the pose. I am excited to practice this more!
Thank you so much! Had really tight traps and lots of pressure on the lower back - this fixed it! I've been doing yoga for a year, but this was definitely the best explanation for downward dog. Any comment readers and those you tubers scanning the plethora of yoga video's for the most effective teacher, Adriene is it. Plus she's easy on the eyes.
Just started looking into Yoga and thinking about practicing. This vid is so helpful alot of movements are mentioned but never really explained thank you.
I found it very amusing when you said that if you are a beginner and aren't wiggling you might never watch another video[TOTALLY FELT THAT FOR A MOMENT] LOL but I enjoyed it so I will keep practicing thank you for a great video
Thank you! this was a great explanation of the downward dog, especially the keep moving part. this became a lot easier to "hold" if I keep stepping and moving
Started watching your videos a few months ago and haven't stopped since. This is my first time seeing a video you had created so long ago. I just want to say thank you so much for sharing your love, passion, and persistence in yoga with us all. So motivating and inspiring. I look forward to my daily practices and am so thankful to have them so easily at my fingertips.
This hurts my wrists SO MUCH! Do you have some kind of video for wrists?? This channel has helped me find so much peace I’m so many stages of my life. During quarantine, I have much more time to dedicate to learning more. I love it and you! ❤️
Throwback to Downward Dog this morning! What is that saying... "Do one thing every day that scares you." Shooting new goodies for the YWA channel today! I love hearing about your practice! Keep the feedback coming.
I do not know if Adriene is still monitoring comments on this video (5 years after it was released) but, I might suggest she add those pop-up links at the beginning of her series (e.g. "True - 30 day Challenge") if for no other reason than to clue newbies like myself that the Foundations modules exist. [I did not find them until I completed my first 30 day challenge. These sure would have helped.] Thank you for filling an instructional need where no-one else has.

Ruth! Try the hasta bandha lock I just wrote about above, I think this could help you or at the very least will be good exploration. Its a marvelous too! Also- no you are not doing anything wrong. Remember everything is connected - the numbness could be coming from shoulders or lower back. Its all a process! Love, A
Adriene you’ve been a life saver during lock down.heartfelt thanks.
I was surprise to see that the caption is written properly what you were saying while you were doing the pose. Very nice.
thank you doctor Adriene for teaching me legs up the wall i like alot feels good totally i do it everyday I'm 70 and it feels nice it really helps with knee problems kinda takes away the pain thank you Gilbert
I love that you also mention the Sanskrit name for every yoga pose. Thank you. Already subscribed!
Keep up the good work. I finally got a chance to try yoga it was great
Thank you sweet Merrilee! YOGA ON!!!
I've done 6 sessions of yoga at my local sports centre now and the downward dog absolutely kills! 💜
I keep moonwalking in this pose!! I really need to get a yoga mat ! Very fun but difficult pose, thank you Adriene
I have to say that I really enjoyed this video of you. You made yoga not just fun, but funny as well. Thank you!
So awesome to see Rodrigue's book in the Yoga Room. He hangs all over my house!
This is the best aasan. I feel so good after doing Adhomukhshavaasan.
+Yoga com Intenção por Gabi Dias I have super weak wrist, making this pose kind of difficult, do you what canI do to improve it?
Hey Adriene, can you show up a video on upward facing dog (couldn't find one). BTW, I LOVE your videos! You've got a 60 yo who never exercised her entire life (really :-( ) on the mat every day for the last 115 days! Woo-hoo!
Good for you!!
Yat you 💚
Yupp, if I do this static style, I curse everyone.
Adriene..you are brilliant! Thank you for....fell in love with yoga...Namaste
after doing this yoga, i feel so energetic and peaceful
Thank you! The puppy pose helped my downward dog greatly. Love you style.
oh wow. it's the first time i've seen blue 💗
SO helpful, Adriene - I love your encouragement to move and feel good. I've always been the muscle-shaking-stressed-out-static-pose-holder in this position :)
Came back to revise my downward dog and what a please to see blue ❤🥰
I am so grateful I just found you. You posted this video in 2012 and I’m here in 2020, in the middle of COVID-19 quarantine, and you just brought me back the hope of being able to learn yoga. Right now I can’t do downward facing dog pose and I feel I can’t do yoga because of it. I could say I hate this pose but right now I’m very motivated to try it again. Thank you so so much!
Great personality and dog :)
Filming with your dog is the best. Thanks for all these great videos.
Sean
Just recently discovered your videos through your "yoga for when you are sick" and am starting your 30 days of yoga challenge. Wanted more practice for this pose and it's very invigorating, but it was hard to stay moving throughout and i did have to take a few rests during the pose. I am excited to practice this more!
HI! Said blog can be found at my website which is listed in the video description above. (cannot post links in comments ;-) XO!
I have a completely wrecked back and hips and with this each morning I greatly reduce my pain...
Just started looking into Yoga and thinking about practicing. This vid is so helpful alot of movements are mentioned but never really explained thank you.
Thank you again for all the time and love you put into these videos.
I found it very amusing when you said that if you are a beginner and aren't wiggling you might never watch another video[TOTALLY FELT THAT FOR A MOMENT] LOL but I enjoyed it so I will keep practicing thank you for a great video
Thank you! this was a great explanation of the downward dog, especially the keep moving part. this became a lot easier to "hold" if I keep stepping and moving
when i finally master this pose i think im going to throw some type of yoga party lol!
Thank you beautiful Adriene x
Love your guidance! Definitely the best Yoga practice and motivation starts with Yoga with Adriene, Thank You
Thank you so much! This saved my shoulder. Bless you.
Blue was beautiful. 😊
Im here from the dedicate challenge and i have chosen to dedicate more time to learn yoga poses ❤
Throwback to Downward Dog this morning! What is that saying... "Do one thing every day that scares you."
Shooting new goodies for the YWA channel today! I love hearing about your practice! Keep the feedback coming.
whoo hoo! thank you! glad to hear it! hope you are having an awesome day! NAMASTE
So informative - thank-you. I really like the idea of moving and resting in this posture.
Hey Adriene. Thank you for your videos. I love them so much. You have such a beautiful gentle way about you.
