I'd be wearing a mask as well. This is a great tutorial. Thank you.
My grandmother, during the depression era, quilted on the wall. She had a big rod hung on the wall. She took cotton just ginned from the field and separated/stretched it by hand into palm of hand sized pieces. These little batting pieces were quilted in as she quilted while it hung on the wall. With the rod, she could adjust the quilt area she was working on by hanging it farther over the rod. There wasn’t always groups of farm wives to do fast work of it in a group.
What a great story! Thanks for sharing it. 🤎
Your such a good quilter and this is a good idea I just pray you will wear a mask to protect yourself. Health is so important and I love watching all your shows and want only health for you.
You need a belt holster for that can of spray adhesive. Maybe Harbor Freight or Lowe’s would have something like that. Thanks for the great tutorial. 😊
I’ve been basting on my design wall for a couple of years. Gravity is a great partner. I use fusible webbing strips and my iron. My design board is pink panther foam core so no problems with heat. I had my husband make a base the height of one step. So easy and safe to step up for larger quilts.
Thanks for the awesome tutorial. It is so helpful that you talked thru the process of everything, including the placement of your arm and how you supported the quilt. Great tips and tricks. And your quilt is absolutely gorgeous ❤
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
At the end you described your process for quilts larger than your design wall. I would love to see a video of this process. I have a design wall, but it’s too small for most of my quilts. I would love more information on basting large quilts.
I'll work on a video the next time I have a large quilt. :)
I find that a shower squeezy helps in smoothing the material out.
Its works beautifully though….oh…how I wish I could do this….
You could put a few pins on the top part, it should hold great.
I just did wall basting two days ago because of no room otherwise! I love it and it does work with glue stick basting!! Why did I not know this sooner😂😳 Tip- after spraying the very top of the quilt edge I anchor the edge with pins , just to add peace of mind!
Gotta say I love this method idea! Can not wait to try it out!!! I already have my 505 spray. Just have to move some furniture.
Good luck! 👏🏼
To me, it would make more sense to put the backing on the wall first with the bad side facing you, then put the batting over that. And then finally put the quilt top on top of everything. That way you don’t have to keep taking it off the wall. It would be one straight process without removing anything from the wall. Anyway, that’s how I do it.
TBH I never thought of wall basting before this. I don't have an open wall for it anyway. But it does make me wonder what else I can do.... thinking outside the box 🤔. So, thank you for the video 😊👍💕
This is such a clever idea! Thank you. I love your work 😘
Thank you! 😊
I love this so much! No need to wait for perfect weather.
Great idea! 👏
Thank you! 😊
This is such a great idea - my husband just put up a design wall up for me. Love your fabrics and quilts 🙂
Thank you so much!
Beautiful quilt
I wish they would color the basting spray so you could see where it is. Like the purple glue sticks, where the color disappears.
Oh that would be a great idea!
I think it would be better to put the backing fabric against the wall first with the bad side facing you. Then spray the backing. Then put the batting on top of that and smooth it out. And then finally put the topping on. That way you don’t have to keep removing everything from the back of the wall. It’s a much simpler process, and seems to work very well for me.
Except that the spray instructions mention to only spray the batting. I've found this way much easier to get it done without any "lumps" or folds in the batting. The spray can blow right through the fabric, but it doesn't blow through the batting.
What a wonderful idea!!! I am absolutely going to make a wall like this. Thank you for the info.
Please do make sure you are venting your room before you use that spray. I open a window and point a fan toward it. Your lungs will thank you for it! 😊
I bave had 2 TKR surgeries, there is bo way I could do this without falling….
Melanie, for the design wall, do you think a piece of flannel would work just as well as batting? I wasn't sure if fabric would stick to flannel as well
I've tried flannel and it works, but it doesn't work as well as batting. The flannel also has a tendency to sag and not look as tidy (probably will only matter to you if you are planning on leaving it up permanently like I do).
@@SouthernCharmQuilts Thank you!
No wonder your needle gummed up. You use a LOT of spray, lol. I use spray, too, but not that much.
With that said, the wall is a great idea!
I feel like I use just the right amount of spray for me. My needle gummed up on some of the cheaper brands. It doesn't gum up on the 505.
@@SouthernCharmQuilts I will definitely try that brand! 😊
I'm going to try this with the quilt I need to baste today or tomorrow. I just wonder what you do about the overspray on your design wall??
I hope you enjoy this method! I've never done anything about overspray. I haven't seen any evidence of it. Though every couple of months or so I have to clean up my baseboards.
@@SouthernCharmQuilts Thank you, I hope I get the same result. It will even be worthwhile putting up some plastic perhaps for the ease of this method.
@@SouthernCharmQuilts I did spray baste my latest quilt on the wall and it was just SO much better. Must admit that it put a shower curtain behind it on the wall, but I didn't get as much overspray as I expected (like you said) and with window open and fans on I didn't even notice the smell. I am so glad I found this tutorial.
Question: do you have a special felt type of fabric attached to your wall underneath your row of nails?
It's batting. I have photographs showing it in a little more detail here southerncharmquilts.com/2021/09/10/how-to-make-a-design-wall/
Thanks!!!
What do you put on your floor to keep it from being super sticky after all that spraying?
An old sheet

I have watched your RUclips instructions and it looks so easy. However, I need to know the measurements of the board you are using to place the batting on and also what the board is made of underneath the attached batting. Can you help me?
There is a link in the caption for details about the design wall. :)
Great idea! What fabrics did you use for that Trippy quilt? Love those colors!
Mostly Cinnamon Tea southerncharmquilts.com/2022/06/23/trippy-quilt-7-mostly-cinnamon-tea-in-progress/
Late question- just found your channel and plan to try this tomorrow. Do you find your design wall gets sticky? Does overspray get onto the design wall batting? I have flannel on my wall, so I suppose I could take it down to wash but hoping it will stay contained. I have plastic sheeting I can use to protect other surfaces in my room.
When I touch it, I don't find it sticky. However, over the years little strings of fabric have attached themselves to it. I wouldn't say it looks bad, but just a part of quilting. There's also little fabric strings all over me. I had flannel before the batting and def prefer the batting as it doesn't hang like the batting. I hope this helps!
Is it safe to inhale that stuff? Shouldn’t you be wearing a painters mask
Have you ever used it? The smell isn't very strong...
What do you do about the fumes from the spray?
They don't really bother me... I don't have a sensitive nose tho. Every now and then, I feel a little sticky around my nose where I must be breathing it in a little, but other than that and cleaning up every now and then I haven't had any issues.
You are breathing the adhesive into your lungs. Please get one of the Covid respirators and wear when you are spraying. Sticky lungs are really bad, and the damage is culminating - gets worse over time. It may be another 10 years before symptoms show up - but by then it will be too late.
I’ve been following this with huge success until today… I’m using wool for the first time and I’m finding that my backing won’t stick. Help! Is this just a normal thing with wool batting?
Wool is much tougher to spray baste. I've done it on the wall though, so I know it's do-able. I feel like it took more spray if I'm remembering correctly. It's been a few years...
This was a very good tutorial. However, isn't the backing supposed to be bigger than the backing? Are you concerned about getting spray on the floor? Or maybe if you are, should you put a sheet down? I use my back bedroom with hardwoods. You could use a dress or apron with a pocket for the can of spray! You could use those removable 3m hooks for the nails. One last thing, should one wear a mask?
Definitely do what's best for you!
I received an email this morning supposedly from you, but pretty sure it's not, so I thought I should let you now. I can't attach an image, but it said to contact you on Telegram because I'd won a prize. Suspiciously funny that the message is not on your page here
Yes, that's not me! thanks for the heads up!
Omg...that spray is toxic to humans. Please tell us you are using ventilation?!
It's a pretty common adhesive for quilters.
exactly!
You're supposed to use that spray in a well ventilated area, you seem to have your face right in the "cloud" of fumes. At least wear a ventilator mask.
It's a well ventilated area. And there really isn't any "cloud" of fumes. I've been using for about 12 years. Thank you!
