- Fall planting will soon commence here in the backyard gardens at Lazy Dog Farm, but we have to be careful not to plant too early. Some of these cool season vegetables won't germinate well in warm soils. And our transplant survival rate won't be that great if the outdoor temperatures are still really hot.

Hi travis and family. Its been a finding for me your channel, i watch directly from Europe Portugal, and i garden with passion for 4 years now. And i say it has been a finding for the following reason, even though we have an ocean between us, through observation of what you say and show, iv concluded that we actually have a very very close climate, as the seasons, temperatures and timings of planting all coincide.

Very good notes Travis. I love the line about the fig knowledge. My grandaddy grew figs and he always told me to go out and shoot the jay birds pecking them with my bb gun . lol
Haha! We let the birds have the ones we can reach, but they've been told not to mess with the low hanging fruit.
Good point on the TP's and heat tolerance. Just happened to talk with my gardening brother this evening. He has been using a shade cloth that lets everything through, except one key thing, pollinators. So, obviously, you have to lift it for late squash.
True word on soil temp and germination. Planted some carrots in a raised bed. Temp was right. But sun baked the top for days. Easy fix, just reseed. But good point on soil temp. Not many folk talk about that. 👍
Planted Savannah Mustard in ground first week of September cooked first batch last night - Excellent! Had smaller plants from thinning subsequent planting in salad today. Really good that way. I’m sold on it. Much better than varieties i grew as kid in the 50’s.

We plan for spring here in South Africa
Zone 8 I like Swiss chard way better than any other greens. Will start from seed in October and transplant in November. It just does better that way. I have to cut it down in summer due to insects and heat and start over after that. I use the stalks just like you would celery and it tastes just like celery..and eat leaves like spinach. The leaves are large so you don’t need much to have alot on your plate!
I like Johnnys seed variety called peppermint.
Zone 8A. 108 degrees. Not even thinking about starting anything yet. If I did, it would have to be in the house and I don’t have room. Some of my cheep seed try’s actually got deformed (melted) in the green house.
I am in East Texas 8A and it is too hot to think about a fall garden. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we can get in the 80s 😊 for more than 1 day. I heard loud thunder today and it went around me..didn't get a drop.

I live in zone 8b I have seen 4 seasons in one day , when I order seed the company I ordered from will sell 300 for 2.50 and 8000 seed for 5.00 so I ordered the large amount and store them in the freezer. Another good show
I tend to do the same if there's a huge value in ordering the larger quantity.

So Travis I’ve never eaten a fig. They look delicious but if you could or would; maybe a video including how you harvest and prepare the figs to eat? Maybe already have one that I missed ? Thanks and great vid on the fall schedule.
We mainly just eat them raw off the tree. We do make jelly with them sometimes.
I am in Jackson,Mississippi so I will have to wait until late September or 1week in October. Sun is too close to the earth
I’m in 8a west TX. The night temps are getting down in mid 70’s but still up in upper 90’s during day. I plan to follow Travis’s schedule but a week or so ahead.

I’m in 7b-AR… been a killer hot & dry summer. Just started my brassicas from seed but I had to start them in the house. Way to hot in the greenhouse. Hope to transplant by late sept. Just have to wait & see what happens with the weather. Never know what to expect any more😡

I am only planting collards and kales and I have to plant heat/cold tolerant varieties.
Thanks Travis, I’m just east of Atlanta zone 8a. Getting in a cover crop of mustard, in the winter shaded areas of the garden as soon as possible. You’re right about gardening in part shade. It takes longer for the plants to mature and produce.
This year I want to try onions from seed for the first time. Thanks to you, I finally got a onion harvest from transplants.
looks like im right on schedule for my brassicas. Im in 7a Ok and got mine started a week ago.
well my zone 3 has first frost sept 20 so radishes are about all that can still be started for this year lol. got my fall carrots seeded 2 weeks ago and they are up just now hope they got time . you explaining why you do what you do helps me decide how/when to try similar things here.
Love Swiss Chard and less pest pressure on the cabbages and brassicas.

I am growing all those, but also growing beets, radish and swiss chard. Am also getting some flowers started like calendula, hollyhocks, really plenty of choices, Northern California Zone 9B. My fig tree which I'm growing in whiskey barrel kind of just sat there for about 2 years and this year it's grown quite large and producing lots of fruits. So can relate to what you were saying about needing patience. Great video as usual Travis thank you!

Love the info. I’m in zone 6a just planted lettuce yesterday for fall garden. I put most of my fall garden in the 2nd week of july. Must be keep everything watered and use shade cloth the 1st few weeks after transplanting. By october the garden is just about done for the year.
Hi Travis us up north need to have fall plants started and growing. We typically go frost to snow by early November. Shade cloth helping I need to get in ground by September 1st

I already started my last planting of broccoli. Will do 1 more small planting of lettuce then will do a big planting that can hold in the beds as the weather turns cold. It won't grow much but I can just cut it as I need it. Started carrots on Aug 1st. No figs here but I am waiting on the peaches and apples to ripen. Peaches should be soon and the apples in Oct. - Chicago area zone 5
This was excellent. I've got some fall winter squash growing as my spring crop is being attacked by pickleworms. Already have some tomatoes up too. Your determinates convinced me to try out some hybrid heat tolerant varieties. I figure if they survive August they can have a spot in my spring garden. Your videos are awesome.

I've just received my potting mix and I am ready to start some plants. We do have a long growing season in the south but we have a hard time judging when the soil is cool enough for the fall plants, as we don't have normal falls as you mentioned in the video.
Travis I think we had our August in June. Unusual to be in the 80's in August.

I'm still figuring out the timing on my fall vegetables here (this will be my second year) here in Southern Ontario (Zone 6 but more like Zone 4-5 for average temperatures, we're just more moderated so only the frost dates and annual lows are like typical zone 6).
Anything that's a second succession of warm weather crops was planted in mid to late July.
Beets, carrots, tatsoi and longer maturity radishes (ex daikon) I started sowing in mid-late July. Peas in late July to early August. Fava beans I transplanted some in early August + sowed some. Brassicas will start to transplant now. Turnips and more tatsoi will be transplanted soon. Then beet transplants, more direct sown carrots, lettuce transplants, bok choy transplants in late August. Also about to start direct sowing my first succession of short maturity radishes (ex French Breakfast). Going to start spinach & arugula indoors now too.
Our summers aren't too hot, we've only had 9 days hit 30C (86F), and we'll probably only get a couple more between now and mid-September with most days being in the 70s to low 80s, the dropping to 60s-70s in late September to early October. Late October will be more like 40s-60s with the first frost typically in early November. So the main growing window for cool season crops would be mid-July to late October. November might not get killing frosts for cool weather crops, but they're unlikely to put on much growth, so they'll just be sitting outside staying fresh as we gradually get through eating them all.
Question and a suggestion.
Leek seeds, just caught that you do grow from them. Any additional tips? We have only planted from bunches, which we can no longer find around here. So, forced to switch to seeds.
Basil: I let them dry, pull, lay down over winter, shake the seed in late March (7b) and back they come. Lazy way to save and start Basil (and lemon balm, dill, etc.)
Leeks are pretty much the same as onions, although they might take a little longer to germinate. The seedlings can be a little fragile in the beginning, but they're pretty tough once they get up and going.
Thanks for stopping me jumping the gun. I was thinking about sowing spinach and in zone 7.
You can certainly plant spinach sooner than us, but you'll probably still want to wait a little bit.

Try sprouting spinach seeds on damp coffee filters in a plastic bag in the fridge. Works every time.

I had an Osborne Prolific (honey profile) that we loved. Gopher got it. 😩. This year planted a Panache or Tiger Stripe (berry profile) that we just tasted our first fruit. Yummy!!! Now just waiting for it to ramp up! SoCal 10a. Spring brassicas bolt. Hoping to start some seeds this week. (Meaning my friend will start seeds for me. 🥰)
Those striped figs have always intrigued me!
I planted a VDB fig last fall and it currently has two very small hard fruits on it. It's good to know that I may have to wait a few years before it produces well. I'm about 150 miles north of you so I'll follow your schedule for fall planting.
If your VDB is like ours, it will make hard, inedible figs for a few years before it starts making good ones.

Commercial celery is a 180 day crop. 90 in the greenhouse and 90 in the ground. That fluctuates a bit bases on season but it's a good rule of thumb.

Perfect timing on this video, hopefully. My VDB isn't even red on the inside even though the fruit is huge. I'm going to buy a few others from different suppliers anyway.

6b BG KY, turnip, broadleaf mustard time now or next couple weeks. Sept will sow rest of garden in a winter cover, probably winter rye. KODIAK brown winter kills here also crimson clover. They don’t like them hard freezes.

I just got a VdB plant, along with 3 other varieties as I'm trying to grow my first figs this year. The three others look like they'll try to put out a few small fruit this season but nothing on VdB so far. Obviously I don't expect much from any of them in their first year though.

Yeah i cant find the carrots garlic and asperigus crowns i want..
I'm in SE NC I've grown an acre of elephant garlic for years. If I plant in mid to late October as recommended it puts my crop ripe in mid June. This usually ends in disaster usually to wet to get it out of the ground. If I wait till mid November my harvest is much dryer and much hotter work to get it out of the ground. Get a better cure. If I leave it in the ground because it is to wet to get out. I'll start getting scapes in late April or early May next season ,compounding the problem of to wet to harvest and getting a good cure. If I can't harvest for wet conditions I always destroy the crop now. If you want scapes only leave it for years it will come back, thicken and produce earlier smaller and better tasting scapes as the years go by but not much useable bulbs, I keep a scape patch permanent.

I’m in zone 9A so I’m a bit behind you. I just cleaned up my summer garden and won’t be planting any cool season crops until at least mid October. What would be a good cover crop to plant in between now and then? I need to improve the organic matter in my soil. Some parts of the garden are Sandy and some are a dark hard loam type that doesn’t drain as well but forms a really hard crust on top and plants don’t breathe well.
You could do sorghum sudangrass, millet, field peas, soybeans -- any of those would be good.

I bought a LSU fig about a month ago and will get it in the ground when it cools down some. Hopefully I will have figs next year between the LSU and Celeste I need to plant.
Most of my LSU varieties produced within the second year.

Some I put in the fridge, but most of them are just sitting in a box in my office where it stays 72 all the time.

For me in 8b, I'd try to get fall potatoes in the ground around the end of August. So you might could do early September.

It's way cheaper to grow your own plants and I get to pick the varieties.
I would like to know about cilantro. I have a terrible time growing it past a little sprig. I would like to grow enough to put in my freeze dryer.
Cilantro is a little tough in warmer climates because frost will kill it but it also bolts quickly when it gets too hot. Our cilantro window isn't that wide down here, but we'll get more started soon.

Have you ever tried the Texas Early Grano 502 onion seed? I planted them last season and it was the best tasting onion iv eaten. I got my seed from MIgardener
I bought mine from Baker creek last year only planted 30 wish i planted more, thats a real good sweet onion. Gonna order more onion seeds came with 300 seeds in a pac.

@William Johnson It's a good variety, but the hybrid round onion varieties will blow it away. We grew one called "Timon" last year side by side with the Texas Early Grano 502 (aka Texas Legend). It wasn't even close.
Warning off topic:
I would love for you to do a video covering "cover crops" Mainly the why's, the how's, the benefits, the kinds of cover crops ect. I know nothing about this subject
Travis has done many videos on cover crops and usually states his purpose for growing them in the various beds. ie. Some to improve soil health, some to feed the chickens, some to deter pests on a crop that will follow the cover crop. Just do a search for cover crops from his channel page.
@@stevefromthegarden1135 I have done a search of his page. It did one on mustard as a cover crop and 1 about the chicken tractor in cover crops. Yes he talks about cover crops in lots of videos but I was talking a in depth detailed video on the subject

He has done in depth cover crop videos but they Probly weren’t title cover crops. That’s why you can’t find them. I have had the same issue trying to find things I know he talked about but it wasn’t in the title. Just have to look at the dates from the past and watch each one, fast forwarding until you find them. That’s what I have to do.

Have you done a post about FIG WASP? I watched video about how certain types of FEMALE fig tree will not be pollinated without them and how that effects what your are growing ? Question #2 have ever seen or would even try to grow melons like they do in ASIA where they trellis the plant and use netting to hold the weight melons to keep connected to the plant .
From what I understand, the fig wasp is only necessary for the older fig varieties. The newer varieties don't require it. I don't really grow any melons besides watermelons. None of us care to eat them, so I don't grow them.
There are a lot of cantaloupes and muskmelon types grown here in the arid West, but I don't much care for that perfumed muskiness either. However, on our little backyard farm, we grow Eurasian melons in 7 gal. nursery pots using those drop string growing techniques that you mention. There are a couple of LDF family members who do likewise and with success. We have a few cultivars that will blow the doors off any waddymelon for sweetness and richness of flavor. 15.5 brix, almost too sweet.
When do you expect your first frost and what kind of environment do you have in your green house? It gets enough light without being too hot?
We usually get our first frost at the end of November or early December. The greenhouse has roll-up sides, so we can keep it from getting too hot.

What is the soil temp that you like?
Low 70s for root veggies like carrots and beets but in the 60s for spinach.
Zone 8B here in Appling Ga. I’ve got 8 trays of winter crops indoors at 75 degrees. They are sprouting on the 4 th day.
Good info. I have a vdb tree that I got in May, how long did yours take to fruit? I also have a black mission fig. Both are growing great but what should I expect from the black mission? I'm in zone 7b Kennesaw ga.
I got fruit on my VDB tree in the second year, but the fruits were hard an inedible. I started getting a few good fruits the third year, and now in the fourth year I'm getting a decent amount. I just planted a couple Black Mission trees earlier this year, so they're small and no real data from them yet.

Conadria is a really easy one because it grows so fast. We'll have trees for sale on our website in late winter/early spring of 2023.

I didn't hear you mention rutabagas. I know you transplant them but when do you start them or when do you try to have them ready to go in the ground?
I'd start them around the same time I do cabbage or broccoli.

I don't understand the garlic problem. I'm in Texas (SE of Dallas 8a?) my sister-in-law and wife's 92 year old aunt raise gobs of garlic, just stick it in the ground. Want me to get you some?

@@LazyDogFarm not elephant and I don't know the difference in hard, soft or red-neck. it grows like a weed in their flower gardens, all time pulling it up asking if I want some. It's just like garlic in the store. Their family's probably been growing it for 100 years. this fall when they give me some to plant I'll try to send some to you.
Wife's aunt is 91, still grows a good size garden, and her mom lived to 100.

When would you suggest planting English peas zone 9a Northeast Florida
Early September, and you may have to give them some overhead water to keep them going if you get an early freeze. That's what we did last year and had a really good crop.

We have some fall field peas planted, but no English peas this fall. We have a good many in the freezer from earlier this year.

The Nature Safe 8-5-5 is a great all around fertilizer. That's probably the one I'd choose.

Does rust on the bean plants destroy the plants or no?
It can. Best to spray a fungicide if you start seeing signs of rust.
Have you ever grown tomatillos?
I grew some last year, but they were hard to contain. They grew like a wild plant.
My sweet potatoes..some of them look burnt on the edges. Is that rust?
Usually rust covers the entire leaf. I don't know that I've ever seen rust on sweet potatoes. Not saying it couldn't happen, but I've never seen it.
I've been hearing that there will be a seed shortage. Have y'all heard that too?
No. Don't believe that paranoia. Most online seed retailers have at least 2 years worth of seeds in their warehouses at any point in time. And their distributors have even more than that.
Also how is your back doing? And what GARLIC DID U PICK AS STINKERS...
Back is great. I prefer the Artichoke type varieties (Island Star was a good one) because the cloves are bigger. The Silverskin types have more cloves per head, but they're tiny and a pain to peel.
@@LazyDogFarmTHANK U....BUT could u PLEASE cover the jadam fertilizer stuff...i tried three times...watched all the u tube videos...and then also bought the books...and not one looked right...this year our town has had such a drought and record days over 99..despite what austin tv station says my themometer is in the shade and i trust it more.....but my okra only.gave me four pieces...usually i have so much i have to beg people to take them!!!
all i have is a few bushes im trying to hold till weather breaks...probably in late october this year so i really didnt have a chance to use it ...i put it on some plants...but with this heat....i didnt see any improvments... ut it just didnt look smell or.act right..i think it should stink. Back in thr 60s people did something similar.

My schedule: #1- Actually waking up (quite possibly the most important part), #2- Stretch and move about, make sure I have no frozen in position parts, #3- Get vertical (another important part), #4- Relieve Bladder, #5- Find that photo of fish at Ochlockonee Bay, send via facebook, hoping it worked correctly and not some kid named Oleg in Norway wondering why he has a funny looking guy holding up a fish, #6- Finally finishing up that back deck ramp (freight moves slow these days), New Years Eve, after a few Hot Toddy's Wife decided to fall off the side of the deck, breaking her leg and requiring a trip to the emergency room and several days after getting her leg fixed, she's now not allowed anywhere near that's more than a foot off the ground when alcohol is involved.🤣
