Have extra watermelon left? Cube it up put on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet cover with another piece of parchment and put in the freezer. When frozen remove and vacuum seal. You’ll be eating watermelon year round. Frozen watermelon cubed makes great ice cubes for lemonade and a really good frozen treat on a hot day!
Or instead of ice in a cocktail!!!!
Great tip
I always use salt on my watermelon!
Seems like alot of people do Kelli!
Love this video. Live in South Georgia as well. We are relatively new to growing anything other than tomatoes, so this content is really up our alley. Please do more videos like this of when you guys plant what.
Thanks for watching,
Count me in as one who loves salt on a melon, any melon. Try salt on an apple, it will change your world. And of course salt and pepper on a tomato is the only way to go.
My grandpa ate sugar on tomatoes and salt on watermelons and cantaloupes. I don't add anything.
My dad ate salt and pepper on cantaloupe and I followed in his footsteps. It’s pretty great with the pepper on it.
Try this for simple tomato sauce( came from the internet somewhere), put any tomato( forget peeling), chopped onions, peppers if you like, browned meat if you like, whatever seasoning you like, pressure cook ( Instant Pot is good) for 20 minutes, use immersion blender to purée. No need to remove seeds, can use tomatoes with tough skins, will all be tender, but, thinner than most sauces. Reduce on stove or add a thickener. Perfect for those forgotten freezer tomatoes with thick skins that need to go!
Sounds yummy, definitely need to try this.
Great information - as always!!
Glad it was helpful!
Greg you didn't say that this was the best daggum garden show on the internet!
I know it is though. :)
slipping there wasn't he
This show and topic does have PERFECT timing!!! I just started doing fall gardening the last couple of years and I have yet to get my cabbage and broccoli planted at the right time! I’ve been late every year and ironically those are my families favorites!
Please do a show soon on when to get those cabbage and broccoli transplants started!! I’m in west central Georgia, Harris County, so I’m not too far off from the same Planting times as you are….. if any!
ALWAYS LOVE THE SHOW WHEN MS SHELIA IS ON!!! Great information, and lots of it!! THANKS HOSS!!👍😃👍
Great idea, Sydney! Thanks as always for the support. Glad you enjoyed the show!
It took me 5 years after I moved to Florida (from Maryland) to plant a fall garden! I got real tired of the mammoth weeds we get here in an empty plot, so two years ago I decided to have a year round garden. It was only successful with advice and inspiration from Hoss Tools! I’m a real southern, year round gardener, now!
good to hear.
AMEN, to NO SALT on your watermelon. If it needs salt, then its not a good melon, lol
Team Greg
Lovely - you posted this 2 years ago and it popped into my 7/8/24 feed right when I needed it! Good info, thank you. I’m gonna pop some summer & winter squash into seed trays today. 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Right on with salt I’ve alway put salt on my watermelon also. For 65 yrs. or more.
Team salt
I'm with Miss Hoss. Salt on the watermelon. :)
Team salt
Wish you could do this for 6b
Yes we are working on this.
Ty wold be so helpful
We just crave Tajin on most fruit, especially watermelon and nectarines! Sweet, salty, hot spicy. 🥰
Oh wow!
What's a second... Is this no longer the best dagum' garden show on the radio? .... And internet...?
I know? Who’s the best now? Do tell!
oops
Welcome to the best dagum' garden show on the radio.....and internet.
Talked to a very polite gal at your business today. Gave me all the answers I needed. Thx for sharing for running a great vustomer service business@
Blessings, julie
Happy to hear it, Julie! :) Thanks for the support.
I'm a middle of the watermelon eater myself! 2-3 get knocked down every week around my house. Love you guys
Thanks, hope you have animals to enjoy the left overs like we do.
Every time I think about Growing some fall sweetcorn here in Northeast Florida all I could think about hurricane season nothing but make a man wanna commit himself to a mental institution after seeing all that corn Destroyed
Understand, we have had that happen here in South Georgia too.
My grandma used to say look for the bee sting
Interesting. I’ve not heard of this
@@gardeningwithhoss she was from Texas originally and I believe it was something passed from generation to generation.lol
I just picked two. The tendril was brown and dried up and has been for a while. The bottom was somewhat yellow. They weren't nowhere near ripe. It can be frustrating. I wanted to pick them before this tropical storm came through. Oh well, still plenty on the vines.
Same here. It was sweet at least but not quite ready. I'll know better next time. I hope.
We have some like that also.
Infoative show, and for that I’m great full, but just put a packet together of seeds we should buy relative to our zone.
And when to plant, now that would be next level of helping gardeners grow! I would buy as I have before. I’m in zone 8 as well, 10 miles north of Savannah.
great idea and we have been thinking about doing this.
Dehydrated watermelon makes a great "candy like" treat. It's so good! It concentrates the sweetness and taste into bite size pieces. I slice long pieces about 5" x 5" or longer and about 1/4" thick and lay them on trays to dehydrate at 117°f for a few days or until rubbery. Then I use scissors and cut into 1"x 1" squares and dehydrate until crisp. Oh yum! Store in mason jars, vacuumed sealed. Good for many many years!
Sounds great!
Very interesting method of processing watermelon. Have you successfully stored for years?
Oh, and the best watermelon is the one you’re going to eat next.
Sure is
My pepper plants start kicking back into high gear when temps begin to drop in the fall.
same I often get a better fall harvest from my peppers than I did an early summer crop
Yes, we keep ours going until frost.
Watermelon with seeds taste sweeter
So good
Like I said before, I just love y'all! When I lived in Zone 9b, yes, we had a little longer warm season, but the flip side of that is there are a number of things that I can grow here in Zone 8b that won't grow at all there. And in Central Florida, you really had to be lucky - The end of July through October is usually the worst of hurricane season. I can't begin to tell you how many times I'd plant something only to have it decimated by a tropical storm or hurricane! While the weather can be challenging here, it seems like it's just a tad easier to deal with. Sheila!! I'm making curried zucchini pickles tomorrow - They are yummy!
Hello Carol, great to see you joining us. Yes those hurricanes and tropical storms can be brutal.
Gardening is so weird this year! Heat didn’t set in till last week. I’ve had more pest problems than ever. My tomatoes are just starting to ripen. Tons of pods on my Lima Beans-just waiting for them to plump. Here’s hoping we all have great harvest despite all the odds! I refuse to be discouraged!🤪
My tomatoes are just starting to bloom, peppers have got very small peppers but I'm in zone 4
Same here!
Beans do so much better in the fall did it last year and omg I canned so many jars best crop we ever got. My squash did better as weel
Great, we are hoping we have a good fall this year.
Someone said two fingers in between stripes of watermelon!!
We’ve heard of that too!
That melon isn’t ripe yet... you got wait till they turn red...
I learned something here. Thank you
Glad you joined us.
I'm with Mrs. Hoss. I use salt on my watermelon.
Tajin!
team salt
I planted corn and fat roots are showing a little. I just cover it with dirt. What does that mean. I am in AZ.
How many times are you hilling them? (throwing dirt to the roots) Should be done weekly until too high to get in between rows
Watermelon seeds are really good for you! Research it and chew them up!
I’d rather have a seeded than a seedless!
I've heard the same about grape seeds
👏🏼👏🏼
A guy from the middle east told me they roast them in a skillet with oil and salt and eat them like that.
Fall/Winter gardening is my favorite! Being in south central Florida, we seldom get a frost or freeze.
Lucky you. We have made it to Christmas before without a frost.
@@gardeningwithhoss We had one early in the year... some temperatures were recorded locally at 25 degrees, but that was the first time in years.
Salt on a watermelon and black pepper on a cantalope :-)
:)
I could never see myself doing either lol
Planting squash and Mac Pack cucumbers now! We sell lots of produce got to keep it going! Got late half runner beans running now! Late tomatoes starting to bloom ! April we set out 900 Mountain fresh tomatoes! Made lots of bushels of tomatoes! Planted Rattle snake beans and Blue lake pole.still coming in lots! Love your videos! Thanks so much! Really helped a lot on the late stuff! Happy Planting! MARLENE Willoughby in Fair play SC zone 7!
thanks for watching
Get rid of em! No! We use them all for Fall and Halloween decorations!
North GA here, I'll start most my fall garden @ the start of august. my Seminole pumpkins will go strong the entire season so I dont need to start a second crop as they produce all season. My summer squash and cucumbers have already been planted for the second run,and i'm still pulling abit from my 1rst cucumbers. Ill be planting out my fall crops the start of august. cole crops, bush beans. potato's,carrots & beats, followed by onions and garlic a couple months later
Sounds like you have a good plan.
Just started my seeds for fall 2 days ago! Great minds think alike! I just recently found your channel and love it!
Thanks for being there💕
Thanks for watching
The only thing that killed my tomatoes last year was the sunlight not coming over the fence and house enough in November, lol. Otherwise I think I could row year round. I had no idea I could start peppers this late, I'll give it a try!
Thanks, good luck on peppers
Like how y'all break that down & make it simple to figure out when to start planting again, thank you for sharing.
Glad to help
Can you offer insight and advice into a project we are starting . We are starting an educational garden and food preservation classes as well as gardening classes. We just need some advice what would be the best way to begin the educational garden. Whether with all the veggies or with just certain ones. Would love to speak with you about it. Any advice that could get us on track right.
Give us a call and we will be glad to discuss.
I only plant late beans. My early beans never do well
We are going to try again in the late summer.
My ambrosia is silking now!
Awesome
I'm in zone 8b, I'm wondering why do we plant potatoes February 14th? Can we not plant later than that and get more than 1 crop?
you can plant them later and also do a fall crop
@@gardeningwithhoss Thank you, I had thought about doing a trial second crop this year and now I think I will.
A lot of good information. Love having Ms Hoss on . Starting using her corn method last week and oh my goodness it’s so easy and good . The lady knows her stuff .
Glad it was helpful!
This year the weather in Texas has been weird. I have 1 greenhouse tunnel that I am planting seeds in. I am hoping to get 2 more pretty soon.
Good luck!
You didn't say "best dog garn garden show on the internet and radio" :(
Welcome to the best dagum show on the radio and internet too.
@@gardeningwithhoss there it is!!!! Put a smile on my face. Thanks!
Fantastic information. Thank you and enjoy your watermelon ☺️.
Our pleasure!
You think salt on watermelon is bad? I have seen multiple people put pepper on watermelon.
Ms. Hoss loves pepper on cantaloupe.
No dad jokes this week? 😞
oops we will have to make up for it next week.
What do you get when you slice a watermelon in four pieces?
A quartermelon!
Just a question...are u talking about seeds being direct sown or sown to begin transplants in green house?
Both
I love watermelon with salt but rarely buy one. I have the hardest time getting a good one.
team salt
One of ya needs a pumpkin patch.
You know you want pumpkin pie
We have one going. Love us some pumpkin pie.
@@gardeningwithhoss hopefully Mrs.Hoss will let us get the recipe?
I must be a sinner cause I have to have salt on watermelon, cantaloupe, apple and peaches.
3-4 weeks
Did I miss it? I didn't hear the part about the spray schedule.
No we didn't talk about that on this show. Great idea for future show
Fall garden verry verry interesting. Maybe include preservation ideas for processing veggies somewhat immature when growing season ended too soon. Green tomatoes can make a tasty relish if I remember correctly. There may be more edible relishes etc for immature veggies that aren't ripening soon enough. Thanx again....
Great ideas
I probably should not tell this BUT....melon is ripe when the melon skin is "soft" enuf to "scratch" with a gentle "fingernail" scrape. I sometimes use this method on my homegrown melons BUT not at the supermarket produce display case ie I do not scratch the skin unless I own the melon....
Thinking of purchasing some okra seed from you, is it to late to plant it now in zone 8B? Southeast Alabama
You can still get another round in, I would plant within the next week or two. I'm on the gulf coast of Alabama and I'm planting some as soon as it dries out. We've had so much rain lately.
no it is not
Last year I didn't listen to locals who knew what they were talking about and I planted pumpkins second to third week of June and I had pumpkins ripening in mid-August. Here in excessive Arkansas heat 100-day pumpkins can turn into 70 and 80-day pumpkins. So this year I waited till July 3rd to put my seed in the ground, can't always go by the days of maturity on a plant package.
No, the heat will cause issues.
@@gardeningwithhoss I'm glad I caught your attention, I've been looking for a way to get ahold of you without calling and disrupting y'all. I've got pumpkin plants that are up about 2 to 4 in right now and looking good what can you sell me that I can run through my fertigator that will give them a big boost? I already have some micro boost but what else is there I can run through my drip tape?
I use water soluble 10 - 52 - 10
LOL ask you what time it is and he tells me how to build a watch!
Thanks for watching.
My corn stock has the pollinators on top but no corn🤔
send us a picture to customer service email and we'll take a look
Try a bit is chili powder and a squeeze of lime juice on your watermelon.
Will have to try. Greg will not be happy though.
@@gardeningwithhoss you seem to take pretty good care of him. Give him a piece of pineapple with chili and lime. ;)
Thanks I loved this information!
You are so welcome Mindy!
I hope the grocery store wasn`t the piggly wiggly in port st joe , if so she may have had to take a mortgage out to pay for her watermelon .
No we were in St. Mary's
@@gardeningwithhoss Ya`ll are livin the dream
That's a beautiful watermelon! Praise God
Yes indeed!
Does Miss hoss have speghetti sauce recipe
yes, will share
With regard to fall planting and frost dates: sure, you certainly dont want less time than time to maturity for a crop however, things slow down quite a bit when grown in the fall, so it takes longer for the crop than what is on the sticker. the maturity time as on the sticker is for when crop is grown in perfect conditions for growth of that crop.
Good point!
agree
IN MY AREA ZONE 9B IN CENTRAL FLORIDA I CAN BASICALLY GROW YEAR ROUND AND I AM ENJOYING THAT BECAUSE I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DO A LOT OF PLANTING THIS SPRING DUE TO SURGERIES AND THE PLACE I RENT SELLING BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD WE CAN CONTINUE TO LIVE HERE IF WE WANT SO PLANTING I WILL BE DOING.
That is awesome!
...aaand this is why ya'll are the 'Best Dadgum Gardening Show on the Internet' lol I think the [harvest window] is the part that is the hardest to find good info on for all the different vegetables when trying to put together a good succession plan. That would be a REALLY USEFUL tool to have, especially for items you haven't grown before. Maybe a chart that shows an estimated harvest window for each type of vegetable. I struggled with this a lot. I would have items started and ready to go in and the previous crop wouldn't be finished. The DTM doesn't really help you with that part. Anyway, thank you so much for all the time you put into these shows, etc. because you are truly 'helping people to grow their own food.' God Bless.
Thanks for watching
Thank you for all the information
Our pleasure!
I’m thinking about pulling up my drip tape and installing French drains.... I have another round of okree coming up but it keeps going under water every day this rain down here in the south is Insane I don’t know how I’m gonna grow anything outside of a green house .... my garden has had standing water at least 5 days a week since February and it hasn’t dried up enough to run the wheel hoe yet this year
We've had rain everyday. Feel your pain.
I'm with Momma Hoss on team salt! And to go even further...i like to add chopped up mint and a squeeze of lime juice...so good!
yea for team salt
Question; does using trip tape with 12" spacing make any difference on crops with much closer spacing, say carrots or raddish?
no
Tried some of your water melons this year all doing well except the seedless only the pollinators germinated planted twice with no luck any advice
The seedless are more temperature sensitive during the germination stage.
Thank you for going over crops that are good for the fall. Just started my garden this spring and was wondering what I could plant. Very good information.
Glad I could help!
Good evening y’all!
Hey hey!
East Texas here. Thanks for the great information. Enjoyed the show.
@@bkc0410 Glad you enjoyed!
I cut opened a lemon drop watermelon last night. It was so cute and little. Yellow inside and out. did not take pics just ate it. It was good!
Sounds good
This helping me to get my mind right to get my fall garden in! I guess I’ll be buying me some seeds here ASAP ! Keep them coming great stuff thank you 😊
Great to help you out.
Thanks for information got everything ready for. Fall just planted last tomato 🍅 pepper
Perfect!
Funny you laugh at the thumping method have some crazy looks in the grocery store before 😆🤣
So true!
Just curious, what about rutabagas and kohlrabi for planting times in the fall?
We will cover that on a later show.
How do you know when to pull your Bella Rosa plants versus waiting to see if they’re going to make more?
Once the top crop has made they are finished.
This was a good guide for me I’m in Georgia but for my area the almanac puts my first frost at November 3…. I’m going to take a chance because I currently only have one butternut squash formed I’m going to drop a few more seeds and hope I can get a few more
Good luck
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you!
Another great video! I'm with Greg, don't salt my melon!
Ha! Glad you're on the team!
The more webbing marks (scaring) on a watermelon the better, that is what i was told when i was young and learning from a lifelong gardner in his late 60's. Supposedly everytime a bee visits the flower it will create more webbing on the fruit when it develops and will make the watermelon sweeter.
Very interesting. Those lifelong gardeners know.
"VERY INTERESTING" AS THE ELDERLY FELLOW USED TO SAY ON TV COMEDY SHOW 30 OR SO YEARS AGO, ( WOW HAS IT BEEN THAT LONG) I AM THINKING IT WAS LAUGHIN BUT UNFORTUNATELY after thinking ABOUT IT THE PAST 5 MINUTES WHILE COMPOSING THIS COMMENT I AM UNSURE. WOW YOU'RE SHOW IS GREAT AND I ONLY CAUGHT PART OF IT. THE COMMENTS ARE EXCEPTIONALLY HELPFUL
Mrs Hoss what is your channel? Would love to follow you too!
Don't have one, just help out on this one. You can find me on out TIC TOC and instagram mostly.
AWESOME AWESOME
Thanks for joining us tonight.
Sinnin and saltin!!
haha
Right on
Thanks
Thank you! I will be growing more corn and peas in Alabama!
Sounds great!
Greg: "I think it's a sin to put salt on a watermelon." 😂😂😂
Well…. 🤣
A sin against your blood pressure, maybe. Considering most people eat too much salt, it seems overboard to add it to watermelon. It might be interesting to try a spritz of lemon juice or something, though.
As always another good video. I have a question though... Me and my neighbor both grew Sugar Baby watermelon this year for the first time. Neither of us got one bigger than a softball. We're new to growing watermelon. We're in Florida zone 9b and we grew in raised beds. Any help?
Have you checked your Ph and did you have a good fertility program?
Iv had the same prob for years...my prob was growing to many melons per vine...as soon as I get a nice fruit I cut the growing vine off so no other melon grow on that vine...plus having nice fertilizer helps
I didn't check the pH. I used 60% peat moss mixed with 40% compost and added Trifecta plus fertilizer after the first third of soil in the bed and aga after the second third of soil. I grew my vines about 4 inches apart. Maybe they were too close. I did let more than 1 melon grow per vine. Should I plant farther apart and change my soil and fertility? Thanks a whole lot for your help and input. It's much appreciated
What's the seedless watermelon accidentally found in the wild like the seedless oranges are in a Grove?
Seedless watermelons are essentially a man-made crop. Genetically they are triploids, just like the seedless bananas we all get at the store. In the case of watermelons, though, this is accomplished by... Well, to avoid all the technical details, let's just say "laboratory shenanigans". They're perfectly safe to eat, though, and if GMO bothers you then you should know that this technique is somewhat different than that--all of the genes involved originate with watermelons.
Never heard of these. Let us know if you find out
Really helped me out here in 7b, thanks guys.
you are welcome.
Great show! I needed that info. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
When should we get carrots, onions and garlic in?
Can we plant potatoes for a fall garden?
my onions and garlic go in mid fall, 1-2 months before my first frost. some onions will go in later depending on the strain and day length needed to bulb up. potatoes work fine for a fall garden, we stick to early varieties here in zone 7b I plant taters out in the first week of august. can be hard to find good seed potato in the fall though. This year I am experimenting with TPS potato seed I bought from Ukraine. they sell potato seeds the same way we sell tomato seeds. They will be ready to plant out by the first week of august I had good germination. dont know what to expect tho.
Shouldn't plant garlic too early. Want it to sprout in late winter, not in the fall, so wait until after a killing frost. About the time the leaves are falling off your shade trees.
We put those in the ground in October.
Another great show thank you guys 👏🏻
Thanks for watching!
