    As a goddess, she has an Authority where she completely negate/nullify any attacks coming from beings in the Good alignment. Even if that being has a chaotic behavior or has a violent behavior, as long as that being falls to the Good alignment (Chaotic Good), then he's still a part of the Good alignment. This is actually pretty useful considering that there are some OP servants in Fate that are in the Good alignment.

    One thing to bear in mind is that Quetzalcoatl is an old god, so much so that we don't actually know where he originally came from. Some cultures had stories about him and how he came to be, but there are progressively older works that pre-date those origins, showing that the worship of Quetzalcoatl was an accepted part of life in early Mesoamerican culture; everyone was kind of just expected to know about him, just like every Greek was expected to know about Zeus, Poseidon and Hades and accept them as part of everyday life despite a large number of deities, minor deities, demigods, and proto-deities in the form of the Titans.
    So I find it absolutely hilarious that Grand Order's explanation for Quetzalcoatl's fame and worship is that she is an alien god who's been bumming around the Americas ever since she wiped out the dinosaurs, so she's arguably the oldest Mesoamerican deity and her existence is just accepted as a fact of life despite nobody knowing where she came from because she's just always been there and hasn't really bothered anyone.

      @tetrahydracannibaloid9950 4 года назад +4

      @kounter Nah bro, Taino are Aztecs that moved to Hispaniola through Venezuela and later Florida. Your video starts with the book, but these people are so much older than the book and its stories. Taino are a very tolerant people, and a lot of us who aren't descendants of the Mestizo are mixed with Blacks of various places such as Africa and the the Caribs. But for all of our tolerance, don't you think it's rude to Africanize our history? I have seen the argument you put up and it's fake. I've seen the argument, and I don't mind looking at your evidence as well. But it's probably the exact same, exact, to thing the things I've seen and debunked as well.

      @kounter I can tell you why, because Cortez arrived with Christianity and the Aztecs mistook him for the return of Quetzalcoatl. So they initially submitted to him until they realized what was going on, meaning they also took on his symbolism. If you knew about our history, you'd know that the ancestors of the Aztecs, Arawak and eventually the Taino came across the land bridge. Bro... you're nuts. Wym your Taino cousins? Me? I'm telling you in clarity that's not where we come from. That's getting rude af dude. I know the history of my own people.

    Quetzalcoatl’s story is shockingly more tragic and beautiful than I ever could have imagined. His personality feels like a cross between Zeus and Horus; in that like Zeus, much of his motivations for his actions stems from an admiration and love of humanity that’s abundant to a fault, and like Horus in that he is a god who embarks on adventures and missions himself rather than delegating the job to mortal heroes.

Though her speaking spanish and practicing lucha libre might of felt inconsistent, she was believed to 1 day return in the future perhaps then exposed to modern meso-american culture which sprouted from the legend of Ce Acatl Topiltzin, whom was believed to be Quetzalcoatl in incarnate form.

    @MajoraZ 4 года назад +59

    I've actually been meaning to do a collaboration about Quetzalcoatl in Fate and other anime; it's a shame we hadn't found each other before this, but you did a pretty good job! I'm glad you mentioned the cyclical creation & destruction/life & death, as it's a pretty big deal in Aztec thought and cosmology. That being said, I have some error corrections and clarifications: Quetzalcoatl, or at least Feathered Serpent gods in general, are much older then 100BC/AD like you mention: The earliest accepted depiction of a Feathered Serpent god comes from around 1400BC, at the Olmec site of La Venta, on what's known as Monument 19 there. La Venta itself is really prominent as a major economic/political center after the then most important Olmec site, San Lorenzo, declined around 900AD (which is also where the first known example of writing in the region dates to), but Monument 19 is dated to earlier, when the La Venta was still a less notable village prior to it's ascendancy.
    '
    Labeling the Maya as being 300 to 800AD is also incorrect. You see Maya towns and cities in the Mesoamerican Preclassic Period (defined as either roughly 2000BC - 200AD or 1400BC to 200AD, 1400 BC being when the aforementioned San Lorenzo became the region's first organized city rather then less complex villages). You noting 800AD being the ending figure for the Maya culture is a common mistake, being the period when the Classical Maya Collapse occurred, but this did not mark the end of the Maya as a civilization or as a demographic: While many of the larger city-states and kingdoms in the Central and Southern Yucatan Peninsula collapsed or declined due to a combination of political instability and warfare (the preceding century had seen a massive war between the two largest Maya Royal Dynasties (centralized around the city-states of Tikal and Calakmul) and their allies), droughts, switching to unsustainable farming methods, and overpopulation all exacerbating each other; the city-states and kingdoms in the Northern Yucatan Peninsula survived, actually growing in power and prosperity for a time. Some of the most famous Maya cities, such as Chichen Itza (which is in fact a city, the Pyramid in particular is the Temple of Kukulkan, Kukulkan being the Yucatec Maya name for the Feathered Serpent), Uxmal, Tulum, and Mayapan (which was actually the head of the largest ever Prehispanic Maya political entity from 1000 to 1400 AD) being examples of these Early Postclassical Northern Maya cities.
    By the time the Spanish arrived in 1519, there were still some Maya cities and kingdoms in the Northern and Western Yucatan Penisula (indeed the first major conflict between the Conquistradors and Mesoamericans was with Maya towns before Cortes's expedition) and some having recovered in the Central and South, and with many hundreds of mid sized towns and thousands of smaller villages all over. In fact, a Maya city-state was the last independent Mesoamerican state, with the Itza Maya city of Tayasal/Njojpeten falling in 1697, but even after that you still had many Maya people living in Colonial/Imperial Mexico, with pretty much nonstop attempts at revolutions, and to this day there are millions of Maya people in Mexico and Guatemala (along with other groups such as the Nahua ("Aztec", but it's complicated), Mixtec, Zapotec, Purepecha, etc), and there are still revolutionary groups fighting for independence... so yeah, the Maya definitely didn't end at 800AD!
    I'm not really sure about the Feathered Serpent's association with the wind, rain, and agriculture for the Classical Maya, as you claim, but i'm less familar with Classical Maya associations with specific dieities then I am with other Mesoamerican groups, so that could just be me. From what I know, Wind is moreso an association you see with the Aztec, where the wind god Ehecatl was seen as an aspect of Quetzalcoatl. Water associations with the Feathered Serpent IS something you see for sure with a different Classical Mesoamerican civilization, being Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan was a massive metropolis in the same valley which would latter become the seat of Aztec power and is Mexico City today, at it's height covering 37 square kilometers (bigger then Rome!) and with 150,000 people; impressively almost all of whom were housed in what were basically palace complexes. The city (like many other large Mesoamerican cities) also had a complex water management system, with a interconnected series of agricultural canals, canalized rivers, reservoirs, and even plumbing systems, toilets, etc. One of those canalized rivers was re-coursed to run perpendicular in front of the Plaza where the Temple of the Feathered Serpent was located, as if the river originated from the Temple itself, and the Plaza there could also be flooded for ceremonies. The temple itself had a massive sculptural facade on it's surface with many giant Quetzalcoatl heads alongside heads of what's either a Proto-Cipactli (an Aztec crocodile monster) or a proto-Tlaloc (the Aztec god of Rain, characterized by fangs and goggles around the eyes: This iconography for Mesoamerican Rain gods is almost as widespread and ancient as Feathered Serpents are), and a variety of aquatic and marine motifs such as shells. I could go on here more about the water associations the Feathered Serpent has at Teotihuacan, but I'll leave it here for now.
    The Toltec are a whole can of worms, one which is so confusing even I don't have my head fully wrapped around it, but know that much of what we know of Toltec history comes from Aztec accounts, ones made in early Colonial Mexico by Aztec scribes and nobles recording their own history under Spanish rule. As such, these records reflect biases and propaganda not just from the Aztec themselves (who claimed Toltec heritage to justify their own power) but also from the Spanish, and it's very possible, especially based on current research, that the Toltec as these accounts describe them never really existed. In any case, of particular note here, is a king named Ce Acatl Topiltzin: He's present in these accounts and is heavily associated with Quetzalcoatl, to the point where information about him and information about the god is mixed and intertwined: The stuff you might read about Quetzalcoatl not accepting human sacrifices might really be stemming from Ce Acatl Topiltzin banning the practice... or both might be the result of Spanish influence trying to associate Quetzalcoatl with Jesus to make converting people easier... or maybe that denial of sacrifice is why the Spanish chose to associate Quetzalcoatl with Jesus after all.
    Something I think is important to note which you did not in relation to the Aztec version of the Feathered Serpent, Quetzalcoatl (and perhaps some earlier Preclassical versions such as among the Olmec) is that he represented a duality: Namely, of the heavens and the divine (the feathers = flying = sky) and of the earth and the moral realm (the snake = crawling = the ground). Many preclassical depictions are also seen as boundary markers, such as of iconographic depictions of divine and earthly elements. Duality is a pretty Big Deal in Aztec thought, and Life and Death is one of those important, if not THE most important dualist pairs: these dualist pairs are opposites, but complementary and symbiotic: One cannot exist without the other even if they are in cyclical opposition: The gods gave themselves up to create the world and the sun (as you note in the video), the plants and animals consume the world, the sun's rays, and each other for their own sustenance, people consume them for theirs, and the world and the gods consume people via sacrifice. Sacrifice wasn't a celebration of death, but an acknowledgement that death is a part of and necessary for the continued life of others.
    Also, I realize the part of the video this comes up in is moreso about Fate lore then Mesoamerican mythology, but the idea of Cortes being seen as Quetzalcoatl is again one of those elements of distorted history in the early colonial period. There's not much reliable evidence (in fact there is evidence suggesting the opposite) that Cortes was mistaken for Quetzalcoatl, with Cortes's own accounts not mentioning it; same goes for Quetzalcoatl being white or bearded or any similar stuff. Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca's rivalry is a real element of Aztec mythology, and indeed Quetzalcoatl (and Ce Acatl Topiltzin) is said to have fled after being embarrassed or shamed by Tezcatlipoca', though this is usually presented as "to the east", not the planet Venus (though this too had associations with the god), which also ties into the aforementioned Spanish propaganda (and even current Mormon theories) with Quetzalcoatl being Jesus going back to Eurasia and then promising to return as with the Spanish; as well as some theories by Archaeologists about the Toltec with Ce Acatl Topiltzin perhaps going to the Yucatan Peninsula in the late classic and giving rise to increasing Central Mexican influence there which is why Central Mexican versions of Feathered Serpent gods become prominent in this area during the Postclassic, though these theories are viewed as discredited these days... again, Toltec stuff is wack.
    Lastly, it should be noted that while Fate associates Quetzalcoatl with the sun a lot, this isn't a particular association the god has in Mesoamerican mythology: Associations to nobility, the arts and sciences, learning, water, wind, etc all exist, but not so much solar ones in the Feathered Serpents case. To the Aztec, the Sun's associations with deity's is sort of complex, since different gods became the sun, but the primary ones are Tonatiuh, Nanahuatzin, and Huitzilopotchli, the latter of which wielded the fiery snake Xiuhcoatl, (as mentioned in the video, one of Quetzalcoatl's Noble Phantasms in Fate) as a weapon. If you ever wanna make another video about Quetzalcoatl or Mesoamerican influences in anime, hit me up!

    Excellent video you get a subscriber.
    About Quetzalcóatl this is a quote form the book "Fire & Blood: A History of Mexico" from a texan historian, best book about mexican history in english if you are interested.
    "Topiltzin was respectful of the inheritors of the older civilization and gave them patronage, which was incomprehensible to his own people and which apparently aroused no little hostility among the pure Nahua warrior clans and priesthood. Even more incomprehensible to them was Topiltzin's earnest desire to abolish death and war. With Topiltzin, the one great Mexic struggle toward a newer humanism began. Topiltzin was loyal to his particular deity, the Snake of Precious Feathers, the giver of fertility and life, bringer of corn to men, the most humane
    of the monster-pantheon.
    Quetzalcóatl was a great god of the older civilization, worshipped along with the even older deities of fire and water. Representations of plumed serpents had covered Teotihuacán's walls. The principal god of the Tolteca, however, was the dark deity, of the moon, night, and monsters, represented by a shining mirror and called Tezcatlipoca (Nahua: “Smoking Mirror”). It is believed that the Nahuas brought Tezcatlipoca with them out of the northlands. Like the fire and rain gods, Tezcatlipoca demanded human sacrifice. Topiltzin tried to end these bloody rituals, urging that the gods be rendered only offerings of bread, flowers, snakes, incense, or butterflies.
    "
    Fehrenbach, T. R.
    The cult of Quetzalcoatl was against human sacrifices unlike every other god in Mesoamerica, that led to civil war, between the followers of Quetzalcoatl and the rest of the society, in the end Quetzalcoatl lost, and went into exile to the east.
    When the Spanish arrived from the east, being white with beards (like the human representation of Quetzalcoatl) and their opposition to human sacrifices led the aztecs to think than Hernan Cortés was Quetzalcoatl returning from his exile.
    Fate Grand Order makes an excellent work with Quetzalcoatl, there are mentions to Venus coming from the east, KuKulcan the Maya name for Quetzalcoatl, and the prohibition of human sacrifices.
    "There were many legends telling how he disappeared from earth on a great pyre, or on a raft, sailing out to sea toward the east. But all legends stated that Our Prince Plumed Serpent assured his followers that he would come again to overthrow his enemies. His second coming would occur in some indeterminate year in the future, but when the cyclical calendar again stood at the year I-Reed. Thus a threat of ultimate destruction hung over the rulers of Mexico and their monster gods.

      Technically! Quetzalcoatl is a Teotihuacán deity, not a Nahua/Aztlan/Aztec. The deity was worshipped centuries before the rise of Tenochtitlán/Mexico D.F.
      Nevertheless. She was powerful to survive the onslaughts of Cipactli, the planet eater. A monster that even made the Ometeotl (Supreme Deity) and Huitzilopochi bend their knee. It took a combined force of her and Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Jaguar God, to kill it and molding it into the Earth.

    I think it's also worth noting that Quetzalcoatl's "Good God's Wisdom" skill actually isn't totally unique. Other Servants have (or can have) a skill that is either identical in function or similar enough that there's very minimal difference. A good example being Scathach's "Wisdom of the Haunted Land", as that skill gives Scathach pretty much the same exact ability (the only catch is that the target must be someone she considers worthy of either being or becoming a Hero, so someone like Shirou or Fujimaru would most likely be viable beneficiaries of the skill, but someone like Shinji Matou would not).
    And "Goddesses Divine Core" basically renders the owner of that skill totally immune to Mind Control effects as well (such as Mata Hari's Noble Phantasm....though if her NP managed to snag said Goddess's Master, that Goddess could still be in big trouble since Mata Hari would then be able to control their Master like a puppet until dawn broke). Skills that provide the same sort of protection would be Jeann d'Arc's "Revelation" skill, Jack The Ripper's "Mental Pollution", and a Berserker's "Mad Enhancement".
