I used to live in Highland Park in the early 70's. Used to work at Iver's Dept Store
as a window dresser. Now living in Baltimore, I miss old LA.

I'm in my 60's and grew up in Highland Park. I'm an Anglo and lived on Ave 55, went to Monte Vista and Luther Burbank Jr. High. We went to the Highland, shopped at Boys Market, Ivers, and Kress. In the Summer we had the plunge and park both wonderful. There were gangs, the Avenues and the Undertakers but they didn't bother little kids. Beautiful craftsman homes, the video featured the "haunted house" at the top of 59. I wish I could live there again, it was so wonderful. Alas, time goes on.

Moved to Highland Park in 1953. Quiet, wonderful place to live. Saw "the Blob" at the Highland for a dime. Used to sell papers at Van de Kamp's Bakery across the street from Farmer Dick's Market at York and Figueroa after school and buy milk or bread after with my revenue, returning home to Garrison Drive. "Sworn In" to the scouts in the basement of the Highland LAPD station. Stole Coke (and other bottles) from the back of Farmer Dick's and returned them to the liquor store up from BofA for deposit, with my gang of toughs...(maybe I'm responsible for what happened to Highland Park in the 80's onward?) Carved my initials on a tree a with those of Kathy Jenkins when I was 11. Won a major tournament in carroms at school and a ribbon for my athletic prowess. Kissed Kathy Okubo (spelling?) What a great place and time. Thanks for posting this.

Just came back from visiting my friend there again this weekend,
loved it. We had just gotten lunch @ Pinks Hotdogs and headed over to Highland Park for the Veteran's Day Parade.
Was pretty cool, had some stunning lowriders (which thankfully is something hipsters have not caught onto and ruined), the LAPD motorcycle squad was there doing some pretty fast and fancy routines, had some vets, and other cool things on the parade route.
Cafe de Leche is always good for a refreshing ice cold tea.

Yeah, we all went to Yorkdale (we were literally up the street from it) , Burbank and Franklin, but at different times. From youngest to oldest, and i'm guessing on some of the spellings (strange names!), it was Soraya, Lilliana, Alba, Araceli, Fabiola? Some might even still live there with their mom and dad.

No. I'm 45. I'm an old man! Ha! I lived up the hill from Yorkdale from like '73 to '87 then moved to Eagle Rock for a while. I know that Dan's Liquor is still on York and 57 (saw it in a Reverie video) and i've definitely had my share of Troy burgers too! Good memories...

Great video! Like JiminLHC I grew up in Highland Park in the 50's and 60's. at least 10 different addresses (Mom was always looking for a better rental) Went to Toland Way Elementary, Monte Vista Elementary, Garvanza Elementary, Luther Burbank Jr. High, then onto Franklin High School. I was in freshman typing class when JFK's assassination was announced on the PA. Growing up there was good, spent a lot of time at the theater, the park and pool. and riding my bike all over the place. Kissed my first girl near Poppy Peak. My first love's name was Dixie, she married some other guy :{. Mom moved us to Covina just as I became a teenager (15) I have fond memories, but can only remember a few names of the people I knew there. I still consider it my "Hometown". Peace and love to those who live there now.

Good little slideshow. Even though I grew up in the Mt. Washington neighborhood next door, I have great memories of going to "downtown" HP. Dad was a fireman at station 12 on Figueroa. I went to Franklin for the first two years of HS. Went to the public pool, the library, the Highland Park theater for Saturday afternoon kids matinee where you got in for 35 cents and six Pepsi bottle caps. Haven't seen the neighborhood since the late 70's and apparently it's much better since then.

Kennedy was shot an killed in Tex. Moved out in 73 an have not looked back other the Google moms old home the turned in to a 20 unit apartment complex in the 60's at some point after mom sold the place after dad passed on. I sure don't know what happen to time as of the date I'm 75 now living in another shit hole for the last 35 yrs in San Jose, Ca same gang shit here an illegals that Trump can't get out..

This is Lori Bach. This is great footage/work and has been extremely helpful in my research project! Highland Park is a "1-energy" city and is one of competition and modernization. Out with the "mom and pop", horse, buggy and "rails" and in with the cars, planes and "El rail" system - just like Chicago and Detroit. From multiple scenes Highland Park has been transmuted, over many years, from locomotive to commuter rail.

Not a lot on HP but does cover parts of it. Saw the Park Theater payed 09/010 when first started going an the Highlander was like .012 when first going to it. Alter moves at Friday or Sat night went across the street to the Pizza place can't remember the name any more but boy did the Pizza sure smell good and you could see the throwing the pizza doe spinning in the window all the time. WENT to the Franklin theater just a few times before it closed a block down from the Highlander I seam to remember it was .05 at that time it became a Moving Van storage Co. De wetts? right across for the little miniature 9 hole Golf Course an arcades we put in dummy nickels when we ran out of real coins. It was a great little city going to the 5&10,25 stores an eattinig lunch with mom an getting a root beer float like a dime other little places it was a nickel soda fountains. Hell I was about 4 yr old then as , I was no in school yet.

I was just there yesterday, first time ever...
it is very much a Latino neighborhood, and I think a mix of people is good,
but saw some hipsters look me up and down as if I was trash.
I was clearly not a hipster, and yes I am Latino, and no I do not look nor behave/speak/dress like a ganster for god sakes...it was uncomfortable.
So I glared back and they looked away.
Happened at The York (great place though),
Cafe Leche however was fine as it had no assholes there.

I remember the shootings and police raids with the constant helicopters and police chasing the avenues around 57. that was all in the 90s and early 2000s now its a hipster place with white people all over the place

+John nox In the 40's 50's 60's and 70's it was mostly white people in the 80's 90's it went shit and now its looking a little brighter again new restaurants and shops people out have a good time less gangs

+blueshirt06 - I don't like the gangs but at the same time I don't like the family displacement even though the area is a rent control location those Jew owners found a way to raise the rents on the whole community. I was raised in highland park and lived there my whole life and I loved my home town but now at 23 I can't afford to live there anymore and my friends and there families were replaced with hipsters.

Its a cycle 35 years ago the average white working/middle class family was replaced by poor/working class Mexican/Latino's in Highland Park how do you think the white people felt who never been robed before or had their car broken into or house broken into we weren't used to that I remember when Highland park was a safe place so its hard for me to feel that sorry

    • @johnaj3643

+blueshirt06 - your white and your going to stand by what you believe no matter what I say. not all Chicanos are bad people I've defended many white friends of mine whom have now joined the marine corps. look let's just agree that displacing families and communities is a bad thing and wrong. look I would feel bad if Harlem was genterfied and if the white people in Beverly hills was replaced. it just shouldn't happen to anyone. I wouldn't wish this on my enemies.

Its not about defending my own and because I'm white I don't think Latino's are bad if Highland park was mostly Asians 80%to100% we wouldn't be having this conversation but we can't ignore that a lot of those working class latino's brought in most of the gang violence in Highland park I also came from working class but its a fact when it became mostly Latino Highland park went to shit maybe the good hard working Latino's should work a little harder if they want to stay in Highland park I know I do I'm not rich but I bust my ASS!
