Amazing band and songs and always looking out to develop them selves not caring about what other people think of them. I like that element. They just make the music they feel they have to make and not let commercial pressure decide. Thats why they are always original and recognizable. Better than ever i might say!

Well you said it! 🤘🏻 And that's exactly what bands should do. There will always be people who don't share the taste in music and criticise, and tons of people who love a certain style. As long as you're doing what you like, project your creativity and mind into your creations, you're doing the right thing! 🔥

Gotta watch their video for "Shed My Skin". Another newer one you may love. Their sound has evolved a lot over the years. They've only gotten better. And Sharons voice has only gotten stronger. Plus they still possess those symphonic/orchestral qualities that makes them, THEM.

Hi Micha...Dont feel bad, I only discovered this type of metal when Covid started and couldn't understand why I hadn't heard things like this a long time ago. I love the poetry of WT, it hits me hard and I get all choked up as well. Their most recent full length LP is 'Resist", you might like that too. Great band indeed. Good review as well, seeing someone's ideas being "adjusted" in a good way is a cool thing. Take care and 🤘

Within Temptation used to be a lot more Symphonic at the beginning and they've gone through an evolution of going more "mainstream" hard rock. This song though they do manage to balance both of things extremely well and I absolutely adore it!

I don't know what era of their music you are familiar with, but anything from their 2008 concert "Black Symphony" is top notch. Notably "The Truth Beneath The Rose" and "The Promise".

During their previous artistic approach phase, They had an album called Hydra. There is one particular song on that album which is lesser known that I believe is almost a perfect production.... It is very hard for them to sing live though. It paints an epic picture from intro to outdoor.
I had wished that they would have made an official video of it... The song is:::
TELL ME WHY. A great studio work of art.

around 2011 or 12 They started to explore and evolve... with a themed album ::: the unforgiving ::: It was a step away from their symphonic heavy metal sound of the silent force and the heart of everything. Then they came back stronger with the album ::: Hydra :::.
More recently they did have their album resist, Which I have not listened to too much. During the covid crap I finally started being on RUclips and whand was scanning a lot of new things such as Dimash, Angelina Jordan, OG3NE, Post Modern Jukebox, and a power metal band called unleash the archers, From Vancouver Canada and I highly recommend you listen to that... The female front singer is more alto but she can still head an A5 belt , or something like that.

How wonderful to see you so moved by their music!!! Welcome back to the band :)
If you didn’t like their early stuff, I’m gonna take a guess that it was from their first two albums Mother Earth and The Silent Force-which, I don’t blame you! I still really love those albums personally, but they do sound different, much lighter and more fantasy-based, if that makes sense. Still, maybe you want to give them another try now that you know where they are today! The Promise and Stand My Ground are good. And even if you don’t love symphonic metal, I think you might enjoy their third album, The Heart of Everything. That’s where they really mastered the symphonic sound they were going for and it feels SO much more epic and dark than the first two. One great track you might like is The Howling.
After that though, they decided to move on, and it’s something I just adore about them-they’ve never wanted to stick with the same thing until it was worn out. Once they felt they’d achieved what they wanted with pure symphonic metal, they asked “what can we do next?” They have such a humble approach to music and always want it to reflect who and where they are now.
Their next album was an 80s-rock concept album called The Unforgiving, and it’s really cool. My favorite tracks are Iron, Faster, and Empty Eyes. This is also when Sharon really started leaning into her lower range to match the heavier sound of the music and WOW does this woman have some power behind that angelic sound. Especially for being a mostly self-taught vocalist, the seemingly effortless control she has over her voice is stunning.
It’s funny to think that their next album, Hydra, is considered kind of dissatisfactory among the band, because it has SO many bangers and amazing collaborations. They started experimenting with urban influences in their music and felt like they didn’t really achieve as much of a change as they wanted, but the end product is still fantastic. Some of the best songs are Dangerous ft Howard Jones, Paradise ft Tarja, and Let Us Burn (the live performance of that from the Elements concert is where you’ll come to understand why one of Sharon’s nicknames is Mother of Dragons ;)
Their most recent album was Resist, and it’s very cool with a heavily industrial, anthemic sound. Within Temptation has always put a lot of social messages/criticisms in their songs, but this is where they really went off, with top hits like The Reckoning, Raise Your Banner, and the more emotional power ballad Mercy Mirror.
in the few years since then, they’ve been releasing singles leading up to the release of their new album slated for next year, and Don’t Pray For Me is the latest. It’s a really special song actually, because it shows the return of a lot of elements from The Heart of Everything-from the aesthetics and religious allusions to the more symphonic sound and Sharon’s beautiful high vocals. But it’s also perfectly meshed with the best elements of Resist. I just adore it so much, but all four of their singles have been some of their best work ever, in my book.
Entertain You feels almost punk-influenced and it’s definitely unlike anything else they’ve done, The Purge is super dark and Sharon really shows off with her deeper vocals, and Shed My Skin ft metalcore band Annisokay just has a wonderfully *massive* feel to it. They’re just incredible artists and I’m SO excited for this new sound they’re leaning into. It really does feel like an epic combination of all their previous eras and I really think the next album could be their best work yet.

Thank you for your message! It was really nice to read about your point of view and knowledge about the band! And thank you so much for taking the time to share it with me in such a thoughtful comment! ❤
Sounds about right regarding the albums you mentioned and exactly as you described - more lighter and more fantasy-based. And that isn't necessarily a bad vibe to go for, but with the combination and my personal preference, I never felt quite connected to it. But you're right that giving those albums a second chance so many years later (and with an evolved appreciation towards music in different styles) I might see the beauty in them. So I will definitely do that! 🔥
Their mentality about moving forward and ending an "era" once they feel they've completed their mission is actually a very good method, or sounds like it at least. That way you get to experience something but you don't get too attached to it. I also like the concept of doing albums in a certain theme anyway, changing them up, so I'm curious to see how they evolved. I should really start from the beginning and approach the albums almost like a long series of books! They clearly share a similar mentality with me when it comes to producing, projecting themselves and growing as musicians. I like that ❤
You mentioned Sharons voice and how that has evolved - that was something that definitely wowed me when I heard this song. Because I was so "used to" that ultra angelic light voice. It had so much more contrast and dimension. Stunning sound. But of course, when I jump from 2008 to 2022 that is most likely going to happen and it is a very positive change! Amazing technique!
Thank you once again for this vert deep and thoughtful analysis! Very interesting and eye opening to read how you felt about their growth and what they were going for at each point. I love discussions like this! ❤ Hope you have a lovely evening and I hope to see you hanging around in the future too! 🤘🏻

@@michareacts Aw your reply makes me so happy! You're so kind, and I really like how open and honest you are about your opinions. I'm kinda the same way about their first two albums--I love them for being part of the band's journey and appreciate the artistry, but I definitely have to be in a specific mood to listen to them, compared to things from THOE on which I'll play ALL the time. As you said, they've never quite connected with me the same way.
If you do decide to go back to their earlier stuff, here's a tip: The live performances from the Black Symphony concert are probably what you want to watch. It was a professionally recorded concert and covered songs from their first three albums, accompanied by a full orchestra and choir. So even if you end up still not loving the symphonic sound, hopefully you'll enjoy the energy and grandeur of the performance! Even sick, Sharon was marvelous, and the entire thing just has an *epic* feel to it.

I am wondering which era you stopped paying attention to within temptation.... I found them and have been extremely in love with Sharon's vocals and their power ability and emotiveness since 2010...
Did you quit after their earlier or after their super orchestral symphonic heavy metal culminating with black Symphony concert?
Or was it when they went on a different path and did more retro hard rock And there are many collaborations?
While back in the early 2 thousands they did start dabbling with the Strife and apocalyptic Themes and messages that surely are in the post the apocalyptic mode right now.. And the Strife continues.

I've had the same thought about pure symphonic metal as well. I actually never quite fancied Nightwish either. Now that Floor is singing I think it's the best it has ever been, but still not a band that's on my playlist. Tarja was such a hard core opera singer which is not my taste, even if I appreciate the talent. But that almost gothic opera combined with hyper symphonic metal has never tickled my ears. With this band though and especially tweaking their style a bit more away from that tacky symphonic sound, Sharon's vocals (which are more of a melodic pop) combined with a bit of roughness from the instruments was a positive and interesting surprise. If this is the way they are evolving, I will have to eat my words on them from the past!
