      I hate seeing folk camping on the sidewalk, it's freaking annoying as hellt and sad, but I also don't think it's effective to ticket or force them to move. What the research has indicated is forced moving delays some of them being able to find more steady, not on the street housing.
      I'd rather the city focus on fixing the building department so much more housing gets built, improve addiction and mental health resources and outreach,.etc. so people can afford homes and not be homeless.

    You. Ant park on the sidewalk. You own a place with a short driveway, that is on you. Park inside your garage! Kids, those in wheelchairs, why should they be forced out onto the street?
    But I also think homeless tents blocking sidewalks is an even bigger issue and those need to be ticketed and then removed one way or another. Poop and needles everywhere is a huge issue also. Out of control crime and criminals set free over and over again, yet another huge issue. I think cars blocking the sidewalk in front of homes is on the bottom of the list. Blocking the sidewalk does keep tents off those sidewalks.

  • @Mike__B
    @Mike__B Месяц назад +6

    It's not that the MTA is cracking down, it's just that someone is calling to complain more often, and when they get a call they will ticket not just the location of the complaint but literally every car on the block that is partially blocking the sidewalk, this is not a new thing at all, just an uptick in Karening in their neighborhood now. The problems come when having small part of the car moving into the ill-defined "sidewalk" area, for instance that Asian guy looks to be parking on the concrete in front of the house, not the sidewalk (which also may not be legal but that's another issue), however the front of his wheel and his mirror overlap that "sidewalk zone" so if someone called the MTA to complain about a sidewalk blocker i.e. that big grey truck shown earlier in the video that was completely blocking it, then he would also probably get a ticket as well. "Leaving enough space for people to get by" is not enough for ticket writers.
    An aside though, SFMTA usually doesn't ticket cars during the hours of street sweeping as a matter of personal policy.

    The driveway ends at the property line. The curb cut is a statutory easement to permit people to drive to and from their driveway across the sidewalk. If this easement didn't exist they'd be landlocked, hence anyone encroaching private property - including the public - has to provide access. They definitely don't have to provide parking. In practical terms though, as long they don't completely block the sidewalk I don't think any reasonable person really cares. Except for the largest vehicles this is easily accomplished by parking with the rear bumper in line with other parked vehicles on the street. The real culprit here is the very few who force pedestrians out into the street to get around vehicles completely blocking the sidewalk.

    Reporter said: "Not enforced until now", but that's not true. My neighborhood was targeted in 2018 and 2021. SF meter maids choose different neighborhoods to target every year, and allow some years between enforcement periods to maximize their catch.
    Normally, this law is not enforced on street cleaning days.
    This don't block sidewalks law was created to help wheelchair users have access, and punish inconsiderate drivers blocking sidewalks. But the law allows citations even if vehicle body is only an inch into sidewalk, even though there's plenty of space for a wheelchair. Also, it allows mirrors or other devices (like rear bike rack) to extend no more than 10 inches into sidewalk. These outdated misapplied laws remain because they generate revenue for the city. SF parking enforcement (part of SFMTA, since 1999) knows that most SF homes have short driveways that can violate the law, so there's plenty of targets. I think that enforcement timing correlates with the city's (and SFMTA) funding needs. So, they probably targeted more neighborhoods at the same time, due to SF's projected deficit.

They are small so that you can parallel park part-way on the street while also blocking your own driveway, giving resident a space to park without the need to park perpendicular blocking the sidewalk. Blocking the sidewalk is dangerous for seniors, children, people riding personal mobility devices, and anyone who needs to use the walkway, such as the use of delivery hand-trucks

    What a drag it is to live in SF!!!!!! If you need more parking space, buy a house with more garage space! I really don’t understand people living in high density places wanting multiple cars if they are not able to facilitate parking and then have to take up street sidewalks for pedestrians. I always park my car in my 3-car garage. That is the whole point though, if I have no space or garage, I would not get a car and parking outside on the streets, unsafe and if everyone does it, it’s just eye sore congestion.

    SF is broke and these are easy pickings!
    In Bayview Silver Terrace ( for years now ) there are COUNTLESS vehicles parked blocking fire hydrants , corners, FULL sidewalks, and double parked.
    Especially overnight , with multiple residents ( and cars) to a home. ZERO ticketing out here.
    For this particular segment, if a car is blocking all the way to the driveway edge at the street….sure. Ticket away; these examples of barely a partial blocking seem very petty.
