    I find Portia so fascinating she was too intelligent for her own good, she could never be truly happy because no one could match her in wits.

      You are right to say that she is possibly the most intelligent character in the play; she certainly outwits everyone around her.

    How is the theme of deception presented in the play?

    how far does Shakespeare present Portia as challenging gender stereotypes?

    • @DrAidan
      @DrAidan  6 лет назад +2

      Temq a good question. The character poses the greatest challenges to stereotypes in 4.1 where she uses rhetoric to manipulate and outwit Shylock; the male characters find it difficult to rise above simple prejudice.

      Temq I would add that the way she forces Antonio to vouch for Bassanio’s fidelity at the end shows her asserting her authority - even though she has formally handed control of her wealth to Bassanio. Hope that’s useful.

      I haven't got one on Shylock, but I do have one on anti-semitism in Merchant. Hopefully that might be useful. If you have a specific question do reply to this comment and I'll try my best to answer it.
