I dont understand why people think this is bad.
Personally, i think it is quite good and i like how she is showing emphasis in her words.
Though i may not be an actor, i can still see the effort done in this video.
Clear indicator of problems in your head is your use of "I" five times in three sentences, without capitalization once no less. Yes you do not understand.

I don't think this is over the top at all. It's a modern interpretation of Shakespeare and it needs to be put in context of the entire play. Portia is trying to save a man's life and the audience has already hears the graphic details of Shylock's request.
She's amazing I do know some one that shares her birthday it's the same day month and year

I think it is pretty good, though Balthazar could have been a bit less with the swirling around and throwing the money all over the place. If he did all this desperation but focused on groveling to Shylock and throwing the money at his feet it would have been more on point I think.

If I saw that monologue with no context, I would have assumed this was a 6th form production.
Seems to deliberately making it as far from declaiming a famous speech as possible. Goes to far in my view. We should be allowed to savour the lines a little.

I believe that is the RSC house style - to be more naturalistic. She is not delivering a great speech to the court, but trying to touch Shylock's heart and win him.
@@andybarnett2198 I understand, but I don't like it. You don't tell an opera singer to take an aria as recitative just because it is closer to real life speech.
@@JohnSmith-zq9mo There used to be a fashion for opera singers showing off how hard they were working. Now you only hear that in 'power ballads'. Listen to a singer like Bryn Turfel make his singing sound like a conversation.
This production was so awful in so many ways. I felt sorry for Makram J. Koury as his performance was over-shadowed by the focus-pulling and over-acting of so many of the cast. Was there a competition to see who could most wave their arms about meaninglessly? This was probably the fault of the director who should have not allowed this. I fear this happens too often at the RSC. Why does someone not read "Hamlet's speech to the players" - to everyone who gets a job there?
Yes one would think the director has at least something to do with the direction.

i do not understand the gimmick here. whats with the balls rolling around? very distracting and weird
it is supposed to resemble a bell knelling, which is referred to in the text in Portia's song in the casket scene with Bassanio

Awful. Classic overacting. Learn from the old masters- Olivier & company. Horrible cold, modern settings, and tiresome cross-dressing by women. Enough of the PC rubbish already.

@@somethingsomeone1633 - Laugh some more at yourself, SS, as you miss the point completely- the diff is that the cross-dressing here is not part of the plot at this point- just randomly tossed in there for what-the-hell reasons nothing to do with actual plot twist or whatever.
@@teresal5174 I'm so confused what you are talking about. Portia and Nerissa pose as men during the courtroom scene in order to save her husband's friend Antonia from death. I would suggest reading the play and if you have notes about tiresome cross-dressing, take it up with Shakespeare's ghost because he wrote it.
