Hi Tom, just a little update on my 2021 K5 GT LINE with premium package. Its coming up on 2 years old and has been flawless. 22.000 miles and I'm very happy with it! On my trips to Las Vegas, I get on I 15, set the cruise at 85 and it a great highway cruiser. I fill it up as soon as I arrive do the math and still getting 36 37 mpg! Tom, you're definitely one of the very best car reviewers out there!! Ive been subscribed to you since 2016. This looks like a great car, I never liked the name OPTIMA!! good riddance. K5 ...much better. Also, I picked up a new fully loaded 2017 Elantra in June 2016. after watching many reviews, but yours sold me on it. It has 85.000 miles on it now. Not 1 issue or any repairs! I still like it fine.
I work for a Kia dealer in Georgia and I can tell you that the K5 EX is one gorgeous car. Super quiet with a great ride, lots of room and quick speed with the turbo. The 2.5 upcoming turbo is also going to be the base engine for the 2021 Stinger. There's a reason why Kia was the most awarded car company in 2019 and probably will be again in 2020. JD Power also has awarded Kia best in initial quality for the 6th year in a row. When I go on a demo with a customer, I always ask how the ride and drive feels; they always say great, etc... I ask, "do you know why?" They'll always say no and my answer is, "It's a Kia."
The best of the best reviewers. Regarding the K5 we spent a week in one and liked it so much we did a POV drive review video on it. Inspired by Tom of course
Great review! Note from a Hyundai Group owner: The small trunk opening, which this has in common with my Elantra, gets annoying. I went to IKEA the other day and came back with a desk chair, a pretty large desk, a five-drawer set and a shoe rack, and I can say with confidence that I wouldn’t have been able to get it all back to the house if I hadn’t brought my dad’s Model 3 instead of my ‘17 Elantra. Those seat pull things in the trunk are also made of pretty cheap plastic and springs, so these days after two and a half years of ownership I find myself pulling them two or three times to actually get the seat to unlatch.
I have a 17 Elantra I bought new. Its been an excellent car. 85.000 miles now , no issues or repairs..dont know why you had trouble fitting items in the trunk, I bought a queen bed and mattress, box spring, bed frame, headboard, dresser, 2 night stands, a couch , and a dinning table and 6 chairs, it all fit in fine!!! 😁
I had a 2012 Optima back when Kia was just starting to refresh their brand image. It was a very reliable car that ran like a swiss watch however the seat quality was very poor. Yes they were vented and cooled but they broke down and were unlivable within 2 years.
How much do you weigh?? My sister and I both bought identical suvs in 2008. I weigh 190 lbs at 6 foot 1 . She's morbidly obese at 5 foot 4 and 265 lbs. 7 years later and both cars at around 120.000 miles. My seat still looked new, hers was destroyed.
That front end is absolutely fabulous. I've been a fan of Kia since around 2012, when they really started upping their quality. And they just keep getting better. I've absolutely enjoyed my leased 2012 Forte and 2014 Soul. And eventually bought a new 2016 Soul! that has been rock solid. My folks were impressed enough with them to get a new Teluride this year, and they are completely in love. I'm really hoping they translate this new K5 grill dynamic to the rest of their line-up for 2022. I'm thinking of getting another Soul in the next few years, and a sexy front like that on it would sweeten the deal quite a bit.
LIA does a great job with their infotainment systems. Everything is very intuitive. I agree, can’t believe they haven’t added the new logos to their 2021 models.
great job as usual nice to see Martin with you again...and the reason i'm a sub is the quality of the videos and i enjoy tom's commentary.....others just talk too damn much....and that's why i'm loyal to driven ever since the new york times reviews.
Given that most American manufacturers have ditched in favour of suv, it makes sense that one manufacture will still offer and appealing alternative to the overpriced European taxis
Hello from Toronto! Thank you Tom for this great channel, we came across it this afternoon! Love your style of reporting, perspectives, and camera angles! See you around :)
Maybe the reason that sedans are disappearing in favour of crossovers and SUV's is because you can't put tallish adults or teens comfortably in the back seat. It was a huge factor when I bought my 2014 Camry. I prefer sedans, but finding a practical one for a tall family is really hard.
Agreed. It’s like they follow the same script. It’s seems a little self perpetuating when auto reviewers keep repeating it versus highlighting sedans’ virtues. But CUVs and SUVs have their place and it’s just that the mass market ones (except for the CX5) are just not that good to drive where as a mass market sedan like this K5 and Accord are pretty good. I love a CUV’s seating height and cargo utility but sedans are cheaper, better to drive, quieter and more fuel efficient.
It costs a lot more to achieve the chassis rigidity with the five door or sportback design. If not done right there are a lot of rattles and chassis flex.
Great Review Tom. Glad to hear that Martin's 2011 Optima is still running strong. This K5 is pretty sweet. I just wish that the digital gauge package was available like in the Korean home market.
Will KIA go racing with the K5 like they did with the Optima? A K5 GT-R (or RR for road racing) would be awesome. Will the GT come with manual like the Accord Sport?
I have a 2015 Genesis. It also has the selectable number of turn signal flashes (3, 5, or 7). I guess it's not unusual for what was a "luxury" feature to find it's way into the economy line. Especially considering it's software and not hardware like electric windows and locks.

I spoke with my mechanic who is not a fan of cars with GDI engines. These engines cake up quickly (10K miles) with carbon deposits on the valves, intake manifold and cylinder heads. VW has some models with the same type of engine. You get more MPG and engine power with GDI. They require carbon cleanup every 10K miles.
I don't understand what the point of making the car look like a sportsback is without providing the functionality of one. Would go a long way to address the added practicality issues of a sedan vs. a hatchback or crossover.
Another great review. So being a photographer myself, how do you manage to film the inside of the car which is dark but still not blow out the outside or the LCD screens? Do you film with a filter on or do you color grade to reduce noise?
Was wondering did you ever keep the XT-4 as your primary camera? I really can't tell if you're still using it or not, but the shots look great either way.
K5 EX is beautiful but it didn't have all-wheel drive so I had to step down a bit to a K5 GT-Line. Which still seems more premium than most other sedans I've been in. KiA has to be taking a loss here as you really shouldn't have this much vehicle/features for this price point. The K5 is kind of a crossover between the Stinger & Optima So your getting the best of both worlds without breaking the bank. But be sure you get all the features you want which won't have you losing sleep lol. Because there are some trade-offs depending on the trim you get. But none of them are deal dealbreakers. KiA really knocked it out of the park on this one. :)
This car is a great example of why I still don't understand the SUV/Crossover craze. The K5 looks great, is practical, loaded with tech/features all while coming in significantly cheaper than an equally decked out SUV/Crossover. Sure, the depreciation on cars is normally worse than SUVs these days due to the latter's popularity, which is a consideration requiring thought. But as long as manufacturers continue to offer sedans, or preferably wagons and hatchbacks, I'll continue to have cars, not SUVs, in my driveway.
Great review. Positive projection of facts and cool features. Your presentation is different, joyful and genuinely enthusiastic. Keep up the great work. BTW, looks like a softened up Stinger :-)
Love your reviews Tom. Question: what camera inside your car and how is it fixed inside? A window thingy? I wanna start filming some offroad adventures soon. Not sure where to start.
Thanks Tom...great review and always the best looking shots!! As a 2017 SXL owner I think this new edition might have a bit too much plastic incorporated into the overall design...Well not like a Toyota or Honda!! But seems Kia might be reaching beyond the prior elegant style that MADE me buy a 2011 LX then the 2012 EX Premium and now the already mentioned 2017. That camera man's input is always appreciated! ps are all the leather look interiors just that??
@@DrivenCarReviews Hey Tom...it is pretty striking in person! But we went for a 2020 Stinger GT line from carmax. Living in Reno NV with the rwd version could prove a challenge! Any snow tires you love?? and do you recommend having them mounted on smaller rims than the 18's that came on my car?? Always enjoy your reviews!!!
indeed your video cpaturing skill are very good. Car actual body dynamics appear completely in your videos. till now you havnt do review of Kia Sedona.
The K5 has a better look than the catfish Sonata. I love red seats for some reason. I wish this was designed as a lift back and it would have been nice to have the GT line equipped with the 2 liter turbo instead of the base 1.6. Nice design overall.
IMO the only small car to buy now is toyota's hybrids. I have base trim 2019 Corolla hybrid that gives 56mpg consistently. I do find that its too tiny and for that price in my country you can get a Nissan Rogue/HRV/CX3 and many others, but they use almost double the fuel and cost almost double to maintain. If its not for a hybrid I would just go for SUVs too. RAV4 hybrids are not an option because they are never in stock worldwide.
I prefer the older look ( 2012 -2016 ) of the optima, the back on this car looks like a after thought, hopefully Kia will come to their senses and make a more balanced look in the future
It looks so much like a hatchback. Why didn’t they build in that extra utility since SUVs are so popular? Those mail slot-like trunk openings are the opposite of handy.
Kia has come a really long way. I want to see the GT review as soon as it comes out. I'm sorry, I don't want to offend anyone but I think the K5 is much better looking than the Sonata. I think the Sonata's grill is too big and I'm not a fan of the push button gear selector. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I hope no one is mad at me for that.
If automakers want to revive sedans, they need to make them classicly beautiful. Look at the first Jaguar XF - it was a classic beautiful design that still stands the test of time. These wedge-shaped Toyotas, Hondas and Kia's don't do it for me. Mercedes and Audi are making beautiful sedans, but budget sedans will only do well if they look premium from the outside. The wedge design will age quickly and if you look at the first Lexus that started it, it already looks outdated.
It seems to me that you and Savage Geese have the best photography among automotive review channels. Thanks for your hard work and attention to detail.
I would add Throttle House to that list.

KiA has to be taking a loss here as you really shouldn't have this much vehicle/features for this price point. The K5 is kind of a crossover between the Stinger & Optima
So your getting the best of both worlds without breaking the bank. But be sure you get all the features you want which won't have you losing sleep lol.
Because there are some trade-offs depending on the trim you get. But none of
them are deal dealbreakers. KiA really knocked it out of the park on this one. :)
Nice review as always, and yes, another impressive sedan from Kia. I wish their interior designers would fix couple of things on my Tesla 3.
It’s a beautiful car. Unfortunately, consumers won’t buy like they used to
Love the reviews
This car is a great example of why I still don't understand the SUV/Crossover craze. The K5 looks great, is practical, loaded with tech/features all while coming in significantly cheaper than an equally decked out SUV/Crossover. Sure, the depreciation on cars is normally worse than SUVs these days due to the latter's popularity, which is a consideration requiring thought. But as long as manufacturers continue to offer sedans, or preferably wagons and hatchbacks, I'll continue to have cars, not SUVs, in my driveway.
Great vid, very informative!
Great review. Positive projection of facts and cool features. Your presentation is different, joyful and genuinely enthusiastic. Keep up the great work. BTW, looks like a softened up Stinger :-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool neighborhood and the car
That is a very nice neighborhood--some lovely homes, with beautiful exterior landscaping.
Love your reviews Tom. Question: what camera inside your car and how is it fixed inside? A window thingy? I wanna start filming some offroad adventures soon. Not sure where to start.
Currently I'm using a GoPro Hero7 using a Sony wireless mic with the GoPro mic adapter. I also use a couple LED lights inside the car.
Yes, all synthetic leather. Curious what you think of the design when seeing it in person.
Forgot to add, love Martin Campbell, 'just the facts folks' type, very laconic, when he tires of his day job, maybe a future as a comedian?
Awesome job !
It looks like a hatch. Might as well be a hatch, like the Stinger. Maybe sedan buyers want true sedans, not hatches. Great reviews!
have you ever tried the trunk escape release that is inside the trunk?
Nope. I'll let you try first.
Another well edited review Tom! Those aggressive seagulls were deprived during lockdown so they're done playing nice with humans for food it seems.
indeed your video cpaturing skill are very good. Car actual body dynamics appear completely in your videos. till now you havnt do review of Kia Sedona.
I'm glad you realize that I'm trying to capture that. Sedona? You mean Carnival now?
The K5 has a better look than the catfish Sonata. I love red seats for some reason. I wish this was designed as a lift back and it would have been nice to have the GT line equipped with the 2 liter turbo instead of the base 1.6. Nice design overall.
I can't understand why auto makers are put awd on the smaller engines and not the big one with more power in this segment can anyone explain
The system probably can't handle the torque.
Also, this would cannibalize sales from the Stinger, which will be available with the same 2.5T engine and AWD when it’s refreshed.
RAV4 hybrids are not an option because they are never in stock worldwide.
i really like the neighborhood please somebody tell me where this is at so i can buy a house there
It looks really good and I actually think the K5 name is not bad, not so much of the K9 name for obvious reasons but K5 is fine.
As a local Costco employee, I was sadden to see no TP trunk test. :(
Kia has come a really long way.
New subscriber... great review. Thanks!
Thanks for the sub!
When you do the GMC Yukon. Can you do the SLT Trim?
I'll try but I seldom have a choice.
Fun review 😂
The backs taillights kind of remind me of the chrysler 200, but I hope that's the ONLY thing that reminds me of the chrysler 200.
A body kit would look sweet!
