A pivotal game. There's really nothing more to be said about it, that hasn't already been said. Still fun to play and fun to read over the comments talking about how this game brings back fond memories from 20+ years back.
I played this as teen in high school back in the day, but it was really my dad that played the heck out of it. He was a software developer so I think he was able to appreciate it not only as a game but on a technical level that's beyond me.
As someone that grew up playing the NES, the mid 90's really did mark a turning point for games. The 16-bit era was more of an evolution of the 8-bit with a refining of 2D sprite work and a polishing of mostly defined gameplay taken from existing genres. By the mid 90's a revolution in 3D graphics, CPU's and larger storage from optical discs all converged to bring mainstream gaming into the realm of 3D..
It was a very experimental time as nobody had really figured out how to adapt 2D genres to 3D so there was a lot of mixed results with a wide variety of control schemes and camera angles. Looking back at the early controllers for the Playstation and the Saturn you can see that the industry hadn't even considered analog sticks to be a necessary feature. Super Mario 64 was the game that sold the world on analog sticks for 3D gaming on consoles. Sony's dual analog sticks ended up being the more enduring design of course, but it's arguable if Sony would've been pushed to the drawing boards had Miyamoto not blazed the trail so successfully.

Wow playing this in the 90s was so magical feeling ..it’s really amazing to look back and see how nostalgic and rare it’s become along with all the other games from my era i wish I would have collected everything back then and kept everything Back in the day

What made this game so amazing was the different levels. ..desert , ocean , ghost town. . Quite incredible if you think about it .

It was the first time we saw mario in 3D! Everything about it was out of this world,
Ghost town was and still is my favorite level. It truly captures the spooky atmosphere with the random books flying at you, the piano trying to eat you and the music.
Dire Dire Docks is one of my favorite Mario soundtracks in history of his franchise.
And it's a good song to make you sleep peacefully for hours.
Thank you for posting this. It's good to travel back in time for seeing the good games

I used to "pay per hour" to play this game in a local game club, could have literally bought the Nintendo 64 with the amount of money I spent playing it over few months.
Insane nostalgia. I still remember when this was relatively new. One of the most legendary games ever made. Still own the cartridge and beaten it 120 Stars.

+geek club Meh, I'd take Super Mario WORLD over this ANY day. even SMB2 on the NES, which is my personal favorite. :PMario 64 was groundbreaking when it came out and is still a joy to play to this day once you get past the lifeless blocky visuals.
+Donatello97 Claiming that you'd even take SMB2 over this says enough, SMB2 was and still is the bomb in the Mario series. SMB1, SMB3 and Mario64 are the 3 Mario's that will stand the test of time.

I know it's 2022, and I know I'm only 15, but the N64, GBA, GBP, Wii, Atari 2600, and many other retro consoles made my childhood, and I am so glad they were the ones. I used to also watch these long plays all day while eating snacks in bed lol, I miss that.

All that for some fucking cake, yeesh. Great longplay though, thanks. I was trying to explain to a ten year old the other day what this was like in 1996 when I was ten... it was awesome. The 3-D just blew me away. How was that even possible? He didn't get it. I will forever remember the first time I saw this game though.

Dude I'm totally with you though.. I was barely 12 when I first saw this game back in '96 and it just blew my mind at the time. I had played some PS1 games a bit before the N64 was released and although they were cool, even my 12 year-old self could tell some of the 3D was a bit rough.
Then this game came out and it's like it was from a different generation entirely. Even to this day I think this is one of the best 3D Mario games ever. For some reason, the later 3D Mario games such as the Galaxy series just can't match the smooth and solid feel that this game had. I do like the Mario Galaxy games, but is it just me or does Mario feel a bit floppy and slow in those games?
I can't quite explain it, but Super Mario 64 just "feels" right. Maybe my rosey tinted glasses are getting in the way?

Probably the greatest moment of my childhood was finding Yoshi atop the castle.... damn watching this whole playthrough really brought back memories... and it was fun to relive them

This game was super fucking ahead of its time when it came out. The fact that people still discuss and celebrate this game more than 2 decades after its release is truly a testament to what a milestone it created for gaming in general.
Thanks to its amazing music and atmosphere, the world of Mario 64 is so much fun to explore.
wow so many memories of this great game! I remember when this game first came out it was the talk of all the school playgrounds 'hey guys did you know Mario is going all like 3d and everything xd' or; 'Hey guys, did you know that this new Mario is going to be the most versatile Mario EVER!!!!!' well......they weren't wrong with over 26 different moves....my personal favourite move of Marios was his ability to double jump off walls or side jump......his crawl was a tad silly though!

I played 8 bit Nintendo in the first grade, Super Nintendo in the 7th grade and Nintendo 64 in the 10th grade. A pretty glorious time to grow up for video game fans. I spent thousands of hours ignoring homework and playing my Nintendo systems

my childhood was awesome
I know it's a long play but as someone who speed runs this game casually, this is painful. He rarely long jumps and it looks like he can't side flip on demand. It looks like it's not single segment either which means this is probably his best attempt at each star.
