  • in a previous video I'm briefly mentioned an issue I had when pitching the 2024 Nortent Vern1. I just wanted to post a bit more of an explanation after I had an opportunity to speak with Nortent about this.
    I made some suggestions and I have to say Nortent we're very receptive to the feedback, so a big thumbs up to them for being willing to engage.

    If it’s a big enough niggle, your suggestion potentially looks like a relatively straight forward fix.
    I can also vouch for their excellent customer service and communication’s throughout several email exchanges and pleased to have been informed this evening (also out of hours) I’ll be getting the full 20 pegs as specified on ordering so fair play to them.

    Thank you for your videos on this tent.
    You are the first person to say that the footprint is not included in the tent price..
    I saw two other videos where both individuals said the foot print is included in the price of the tent.
    Northtent customer service is on point!!! I am almost convinced on buying this tent . Initially I was excited to buy it because it was promoted with the foot print included in the price.
    Northtent was quick to apologize and let me know the foot print is a separate purchase..
    I’m happy to see you also stated in your other video that it’s not included.
    Thank you for that.,

    Yes it's clearly there for drainage, I agree this can happen as I have another type of tent with the same issue. Your simple fix would pre guide the pole into the correct side of the sleeve, that's a simple mod I'd undertake if it's an issue with mine when it arrives. Thanks for posting, well done.

    I`m glad to have seen this, as I have one being sent to me later this week. Your suggestion to guide the pole to the right corner is a very good one. 👍
    My experience of their customer service so far is very good. I pre-ordered mine on the 14th of Feb, having seen that the web-site said they would be in stock as from the 25th. I sent a message about 3am yesterday morning (26th) asking when it would be dispatched, and at 13:52Hrs I had this email back from Leif....
    "Hi Pieter,

    I think the diagonal stitch solution is a great idea! Simple but bulletproof solution💪🏻

    • @DanielOutdoors
      @DanielOutdoors 5 месяцев назад

      It might be upgraded.
      But bare in mind the feature is also made for double poles. if you put a diagonal stich, the double pole will not aling as well. that would mean if you are heading for several day expedition you will have to deal with 2 more poles that are different in bad weather that is more dificult to see.
      One tipical feature for example some Hilleberg Black Label tents and some Winter tents for strong winds, is that they feature same lenght on tent poles, and also double pole feature. Specially featured in this video: ruclips.net/video/Mk0Lvg5isKU/видео.html
      This is because the lenght of the poles on a stormy weather, should be same when you are in a hurry. Making that stich suggestion however, will make the Vern even more difficult to put double poles and or pitch the tent. And it will also have bigger risk on that the poles, and even material freeze togheter.

    The pole will want to sit on the outer edge of the sleeve, while any water will want to follow the cloth to the drainage hole, these are certainly not points in question. One needle and thread, and making one pass through the lower edge of the hole area, around the lower edge of the tent (where the lowest edge of the sleeve touches the ground) when the stitch is made in the central area of the drain hole thus making the drain hole two smaller holes like a figure 8 would be a very simple fix also, it may even be possible to spot ‘weld’ the lowest edge of the drain hole, depending on the type of plastic material used (I’m looking to get one, but haven’t as yet ordered). This suggestion needs to be only be done on one side, the side which you put the pole in first - if you are getting into the habit of putting the pole into the say, door side pocket, then that side can get eg a spot of tippex or other mark at the bottom of the sleeve as a reminder to insert that side first. As you correctly say, the inserting of the second pole end is always made under tension, so it will not occur on that other side. Good suggestion of yours with the line of stitching also, it could be anywhere on the sleeve pocket and just enough of a guide for the pole so as not to detract from the ability to drain any rain water away from within the sleeve. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🖐🏻

    Very iteresting and thanks for the heads up. My suggestion would be to make the diameter of the pole on that end slightly larger by adding, for example, a little cup to increase the diameter. Im presuming the drain whole isn't much bigger than the pole?
    I think that's something i would try myself as the first solution. I wouldn't be tempted at this time to reduce the sleve diameter as this may, in the future, hinder attempts to remove rubbish that may acumilate in the pocket over time.
    Personally, im not going to bother doing anything for now and just wait and see how it goes.
    Cheers, Scott, and please pass this on if you think it's worth it?😊
    On the subject of pegs: I've paid for twenty pegs and thats what was advertised on the site as i payed. I see now, like you say they have reduced this to 18 but also included the option to bye more pegs? Wish they would have had this option when bought mine.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад +2

      The addition of a little rubber cup on the end of the poles is a good shout. It seems that the drain holes are not identical on each sleeve so some are similar to the pole diameter some are smaller. Obvious manufacturing variance. A cap on the pole end taking the diameter higher would I think also be an equally effective solution.

    I heard that you are supposed to be able to double pole this tent. If the hole is there then surely adding a second pole would mean it would be forced lower in the pocket and so stick through like before, even under tension?
    It seems like the designer doesn't want to admit they kinda screwed up as it sounds like the size of the drainage space is inconsistent.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад

      Given the width of the pocket, I don't think that would happen when you double pole it. There is enough room away from the drainage hole as far as I can tell. Unfortunately I'm away for work for 3 weeks now so I'm not able to try this out to confirm.

  • @cypokfil1789
    @cypokfil1789 8 месяцев назад +1

    then what would happen with double poles scenario when some space to the outer corner is already occupied by another pole...?

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  8 месяцев назад +1

      I don't think it would cause a problem with double poling. The diagonal stitching would only need to be far enough across to giide away from the hole (maybe 10mm maximum). The sleeve end cup is (and I haven't measured this) probably around 40-50mm wide. So even 2 10mm poles would still fit comfortably.

    Great solution, the stitching only needs to be a cm or equivalent to the width of the drainage hole to direct it away. In fact it doesn’t need to be diagonal and could be placed horizontally at the top of the sleeve imo.

      1) - One single stitch made by hand at the bottom of the drain hole to make two smaller holes (like this ‘8’), one side of the tent only, job done. I’m thinking that once the tent has been used a couple of times, the sleeve will take the shape and position of the tensioned pole and the pole will tend to want to follow the same position each time. Tip 2) - five to ten seconds of gently warming the sleeve pocket with a hairdryer when the pole is inserted and in the correct position (only required on the bottom of the sleeve on whichever tent side you choose to insert the first end of the pole each time) would help give this ‘memory mould’ to the sleeve material, quite possibly obviating any need for a stitch. I was formerly a saddler, and have some experience of making and repairing items with the type of material used, so I hope these suggestions are helpful. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🖐🏻

    I suppose sewing the hole up by a few mill would be the lightest way to fix that issue but it's annoying that you should even have to in the first place.. Putting finishing touches to tents seems to be something that this industry gets away with. Things like Seam sealing does my head in, its not rocket science but its a ball ache having to take time out to do it especially if you do not have a garden and even if you do you have to wait fr a weather window. It's good that you received a quick response but actions speak louder than words and unless you can get something fully resolved at no cost to yourself in my opinion it's not top notch customer service.

    That’s an awful design flaw - if out in high winds especially in a remote area the last thing you want is your pole not seating properly. Poles should not fit through a drainage hole and seating of the poles should not be a complicated task, especially on a ‘4 season’ tent.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад

      Yes it's a design issue, no it's not complicated. I can think of many other things I would be more concerned about when making camp. The video was just an advisory to people and I clearly mention the pole can't be unseated when pitched.

    • @ashtoddphotography

      @HairyHiker2022 kudos to you for point it out - when the new hyped tent in the block is released most folk (RUclipsrs) seem to be forgiving of almost anything, so it's good and refreshing to see honest reviews like yours. For me unfortunately it's a massive deal breaker, and personally I can't think of many worse things than a pole popping out unexpectedly whilst pitching in high winds, but of course we all have our own wants and needs. As for the missing pegs it just feels like Nortent are cutting corners. I think your review was absolutely fair.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for that. I think I'm one of only a small handful of reviewers who purchased the tent, so maybe that's why I am happy to be more realistic about the pros and cons. I plan to do a lot more reviews of equipment and again it will all be stuff I own so I can say what I really think. Don't get me wrong, if companies want me to review any of their stuff I'm only going to agree if they have no input into what I say. It's not a safety issue, it's just something to be aware of when pitching. I think everyone is aware its not a Hilleberg, but it's worth mentioning that time will show how good or bad this tent is. I've seen Hillebergs fail too, so they're not infallible, no tent is.

    • @BelfastBodger

    • @etztz123
      @etztz123 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@HairyHiker2022 They've told you it's a drainage hole however I don't believe it is. You say the size of the holes in each pocket are different but with no reinforcement even if the hole was smaller the end of the poles would make it bigger over time. Having a hole where the pole is supposed to locate is a silly idea.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад

      Respectfully I think you are wrong. As explained in the video, the issue was not guiding the pole to the correct position. It therefore found the drainage hole. By making sure it's seated correctly, it won't meet the drainage hole and therefore can't go through. So over time, it won't have any effect at all.

    • @etztz123
      @etztz123 7 месяцев назад +1

      Each to their own but in my opinion it's a design flaw for the following reasons: 1, You don't really need a drainage hole there, any minute quantity of water trapped in there would just soak through the material at the bottom outwards. 2, They haven't taken into account the pole moving about when not under stress and becoming located in the wrong position/ hole. 3. Also not taken into account the size of the hole and weakness you introduce to an area of the tent that's supposed to hold the pole firmly in place. Also, You need to push the poles right down whilst locating the poles into the pockets so any kind of hole in this area and there's an element of force in this action which will no doubt cause the tops of the poles to wear any holes bigger over time. Just my opinion I was going to purchase this tent however i will definitely hold off until this is sorted now. Thanks for sharing.

    • @HairyHiker2022
      @HairyHiker2022  7 месяцев назад

      Again, I take on board what you're saying but again I think you're wrong. Obviously folk will or won't buy as they please and I don't want to intentionally influence that. But when under tension the pole cannot find the hole so that won't happen. A drainage hole on the side it is located doesn't weaken the sleeve end in any way. A drainage hole makes sense as the water could not seep through if there wasn't one as the end sleeve is waterproof material. So again respectfully. In my opinion, I think you're wrong.
