I actually think Sadler's reintroduction in the warehouse, without any fan-fair or drama, was not an oversight or disservice, but meant by the writers to illustrate that he was not some deity or priest, and not some ever present evil force of nature; but instead that he was a charlatan, "pretender to the throne". That his power came not from divinity, but from a house of cards built on a lie; like every cult leader before him, he was a bug masquerading as a god.
Saddler is an exact opposite to a charlatan : he doesn't need to persuade people to join him because he already controls them !! He tries to make people joining his beliefs by themselves... A charlatan uses lies to bring followers to him, but Saddler does not. Acceptance is more important than submission for him. That's why even during the fight is saying he will forgive Leon and grant him with the Holy Body if he gives it up...
In my opinion, the most terrifying thing about Saddler and his cult was that, despite the absurdity and scale of their goals, they were actually capable of achieving them. Like, if they'd sent Leon to Spain a couple of days late, the world would've been fucked.

Interesting take, I always found it interesting how the cult is called the Illuminated when the parasite they worship literally cannot survive sunlight.
It is a hint that betrays the intent of the parasite- they want to come out into the light, by using meat shields. When they are in hosts, they finally become "illuminated".
One detail I love is that, when Saddler has his servants take his hood off, it’s framed to look as if he has extra arms taking off his hood, because his servants are basically extensions of him.
I love this new Leon. OG Leon is a nonchalant chad with the charm of a campy action hero. New Leon, while having sprinkles of that campiness still, is basically the embodiment of Frank Castle's Punisher. Instead of letting any of the villains monologue away like it's out of an anime (as it felt in 2005), new Leon will quickly dome that villain with a gun before that villain tries anything. I laughed hard when Leon DGAF and shoots Salazar in their final confrontation and does the same thing when he finally meets Saddler in the flesh.
I completely disagree about Saddler's in person introduction. The subdued entrance wasn't just him wandering. In fact, it's very appropriate given that the warehouse you're in contains many plaga in amber. He even says to both Leon and Ashley upon entering to prostrate themselves before the plagas because of how holy he sees them as. The writers were showing Saddler off in the most terrifying way. He wasn't just some insane megalomaniac with world domination on the mind. He presented himself as a stern yet humble priest, completely unbothered by how far the pair have gotten. It communicates one thing and one thing only: they aren't a problem and never have been the moment they were infected. That sort of quiet confidence is felt by the player and showing just how helpless Leon and Ashley were reinforces this very idea. I see this interaction as the writers creating a sort of silent horror to Saddler. He doesn't need to be loud, bombastic or outwardly threatening to solidify his role as the big bad. The subtlety and nonchalant vibe of the whole interaction speaks volumes as to how fr above Saddler is compared to our heroes at that moment. He is indeed a god and Leon and Ashley were just as he said, lost lambs
Thanks for voicing my thoughts better than I could. That part of the video is probably the only part I disagreed on, as I for one found his introduction in that moment, completely out of nowhere, far more intimidating than entering a grandiose room that’s obviously leading up to you meeting the big bad. Of course Saddler would be on his way to retrieve Ashley, while also introducing himself in a way that’s supposed to feel humble and giving nod to the sacredness of the place Leon and Ashley had ended up. His appearance wasn’t random, just majorly unexpected, and that’s what I feel is the brilliance of that scene. Not expecting the big bad to show up in such a dingy warehouse, that is.
I also love how calm and almost "understanding" Saddler is. He seems to almost acknowledge that the plagas are weird and confusing, and almost tries to calm Leon and Ashley down, right up until the moment Leon shoots him. When that happens, he goes into full killer instinct mode and basically almost ends the entire game within ten seconds. Leon definitely doesn't want his gift, and he hates that.

It is true that not a lot of cult leader villains actually believe in what they're preaching. I think that when the leader actually believes in the vision, that just makes them more dangerous and horrifying.
True. As stated by someone, there's no more terrifying villain than a person who believes they're right. Or in the case of Osmond Saddler, believes what they preach.
I don't think Los Illuminados would have ever been able to win for one reason: Wesker. He is easily capable of stopping this whole thing, and he has a reason to. Wesker's goal is a darwainist trial by fire for humanity defined by anarchy and strength, which is not really possible in the world Saddler wanted. If Leon, Ada, and Ashley were all gone, he'd probably just go in himself, get some samples of the plagas, and destroy the rest.

All he really needed would be to let the Americans know to to bioscreening of Ashley as the returns. They relaize that its not actually Ashley but some monster wearing her dead body. Of course he prefers to let Leon thwart Saddler because the US government feeling overly threatened would make his own work harder.
I think it's worth noting that Saddler seems to lose control over the Plaga as you go further in the boss fight. While at first he seems to be the dominant one, his coherent speech soon gets replaced by monotonous words and babbling, showing that not even him is immune to being controlled by the parasite.
One other thing I noticed was the further u go into the boss fight ,the more u hear saddler speakin the words his ganados spoke whn fighting leon,like the ganado lines,he's saying them as if their "souls" or Minds are within him even after leon put them down,implying tht if ur a plaga infected and u get put down,ur still trapped as long as saddler or the greater hivemind is still alive
The parasite seems much more terrifying than dying and being reanimated by the virus to me. The thought of some part of me still being alive and screaming for control while being a slave in my own body? Thats scary.
According to the files, when they Plagas fully control the hosts they lose all sense of self and will be genuinely happy to serve the Superior Specimen. The diary of the mine worker went from "I am sorry I couldn't be with my kid because of work" became "I am so happy to work day and night for my lord".
I find it funny that if Leon explained las plagas to Hunnigan, Saddler's plan would never work. Even if Leon died and Ashley was fully turned and then returned to the US, they would know that Ashley could be compromised
To be fair, the plan changed once Leon showed up. If I recall she was supposed to be ransomed and none would be the wiser about her mind control bug, but then a guy with bioterrorism experience shows up to save her, finds out the details, and from there it just went to shit for Saddler in increasingly dramatic and explosive ways. Of course, if they performed anything more than a basic medical examination when she got back, they probably would have noticed anyway. The only way it would have worked is that they didn't do any bloodwork or scans on her and she quietly infected her dad before the cat got out of the bag, but that could theoretically be all it took. Way too much of a stretch to make Saddler seem more than semi-competent, really. It was a 50/50 shot at best.
Given how Saddler is able to continue talking after he goes final boss, I like to believe we never met Osmund, it was the Plagas using him as a proxy and translator so they could contextualize their ambitions in a form that humanity can comprehend.
Well to be fair we never actually see what would happen IF villains actually killed Leon\Chris est. It was never explained if they could revert back to their original form, but there are several hints in RE4-5 that this is likely to be true, such as Saddler retracting one of his tentacles after killing Louis, Salazar mentioning that he's not "like those Ganados" and remains in control and Krauser remains in control of himself after transforming. Wesker also remains in control despite his transformation, while other "Uroboros" like nameless dude and Excella completely lose control of themselves.
Even Brett believed that Saddler was just completely merged with his Plagas parasite, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he began starting waxing poetic about how great being infected is even after fully transforming into a giant spider monster.

Absolutely agree 100%! As a small creative writer, I look at other characters (good, evil, and neutral) and pick up certain themes and tones. Saddler is absolutely incredible and gives me many chills! Love it!
Do you think Saddler was aware of Mother Miranda? They were both active in Europe. You’d have to figure they would eventually come at odds if his area of influence grew.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they at least heard of each other but didn’t consider the other a threat (Saddler could detest the Megamycyte for being uncontrollable by the usual means, Miranda could detest the Las Plagas parasite for not being able to fulfill her goals). Besides, RE8 repeats a couple of the character beats of RE4 (Miranda is Saddler, Moreau and Lady D are Salazar, Chris is Krauser for a short bit, the Duke is the Merchant, etc) so it wouldn’t surprise me.
The more I think about Saddler's goals about Las Plagas, the more frightening it felt as his ambitions of uniting every sentient mind in the world (human, animal, fish, etc.) were deathly close and all sense of individuality would be non-existent indefinitely... 😨😨😨 Honestly, the remake cemented this fact and it was lucky that Leon arrived on time to save Ashley. I don't even want to imagine what could have been.
What’s scarier is in a way that’s what some are trying to do right now in a sense in real life. No scary zombie parasite but as far as trying to get rid of individuality and diversity of the human race yeah… they even brag about making humanity “grey.”
Yeah it's ashame he barely shows up in this remake. I enjoyed seeing him in person from time to time in the original. I'd totally forget he was in the remake if it wasn't for the brief visions Leon gets.
Maybe if RE4 Remake gets more side-content, we'll see more of him. In the same way, I strongly believe U3 (the Black Verdugo) will show up in a Ada DLC.

I've always loved to hate the cult leader villain in horror due to how unnerving and horrifying they are. Saddler is like everything I hate about the them turned to max. Like his motivations are crazy.
A really interesting detail form the original Saddler is that he cares for the lesser leaders like Mendez and Salazar. There's a note in the original talking about how he's distraught of their deaths and that Leon will pay. I always thought of Saddler to be wearing a zealous façade and manipulative so that he could reach his goal to rule the world. But now that I've see this video, you have convinced me to believe that he might not be fake as I thought he would.
You have to remember that People from the original games were less in control of Saddler than remake and if Saddler came to them as a selfish Psychopath, those people would rebel. So he had to put a facade of caring about Mendez and Salazar. Even near the end, he doesn't seem to care that Leon killed 3 of his greatest men and also just removed the parasites. He is just enjoying it.
The Keenan Saddler epitaph is intriguing suggesting that the Plagas play a bigger role in the RE universe. It reminds me of the RE 3 remake when Jill reads a file in Nest 2 that says the Nemesis program was made possible by the European Umbrella branch by introducing a PARASITE into a tyrant. And who was on the Umbrella Europe branch team? LUIS. The Plagas research made a Tyrant more controllable. The RE remakes seem to be more about tying all the games together rather than just mere graphics and gameplay updates. We are for sure going to get RE 5 remake given the Excella and the Stairway of the Sun easter eggs in the ending cutscenes of this game. I’m curious as to how the Progenitor virus ties into the Plagas and the Mold.
I liked Saddler talking about ending violence and death with complete global saturation of the parasite, playing at the guilt Leon was still feeling at the beginning of the game for surviving raccoon city and wanting to prevent another one. Both saddler and krauser tried to appeal to Leon at different points to join them using all the crap the government pulled on him like forcibly conscripting him and taking Sherry but he's still that naive idealist he was in RE2 despite all the trauma. They did a good job connecting RE4 better to the overall universe with the remake, if they make it all the way back to RE6 there'll be a lot more reason for Leon to hate Simmons now
While most of the things you've said about Saddler are spot on, in the beginning you said he'd "erase free will" and that "there would be no resistance", but that's not entirely accurate. While it is true that if Saddler is directly in front of you, you can do very little to resist and even if you try you'll be very weakened (like what happened to Leon in the REmake), Saddler still needs outside forces to control his minions - which is why he created the cult. Saddler can control everyone - but only if they're in his presence. When out of his sight, he "just" has a massive influence over others through his orders. The biggest examples of this are Leon and Ashley, but even Krauser willingly joined them and managed to keep his original personality after being infected. And lastly, the Merchant is very clearly an infected individual, but he manages to go around wherever he pleases and help Leon by selling him guns. I don't doubt that Saddler would do everything in his power to erase free will, and he'd be more competent at it than most villains given the Las Plaguas' power, but by no means would his influence be absolute.
It’s sad he didn’t get any goofy interactions with Leon. In the original, Leon makes a joke about how old Saddler is over FaceTime and he just laughs along like “Oh ho! Ahhh that was a good one”
That really won't work in the remake tone wise, Sadler in the OG was a self aware Campy Villain that fit the tone of game, Remake Sadler is more of a threat and takes himself more seriously. Basically the difference between the OG and Remake is the difference between the Moore Bond films to the Modern ones, in the Moore Bond films the tone is complete Camp and the Villains are a Campy to fit the tone and are at times self aware of that fact, in the Craig Era though that wouldn't work, while it does still retain the camp it takes itself way too seriously to fit stuff like a Balloon Kill for the main Villain.

Theory: the 'brethren' mentioned in that monument could refer to both the plaga and the Megamycete mold. An interesting detail found in the mines is that a file entry mentions that workers excavating the tunnels breathed in "spores" of some kind. What if the Plaga and the Megamycete both share a common ancestor? The hive mind is underground, from Spain to as far as Romania, where Village takes place. If so, than there is an incredibly old, massive life form that is just sleeping under the European continent. Possible plot thread for RE9?
That’s a very good observation, I also noticed in the RE 4 remake the introduction of the ‘Black Goo’ substance that was used in both RE7 and RE8 with the Megamycete. It’s very possible that the Las Plagas and the Megamycete are distant earth bound cousins. Mind control and hallucinations are shared by both ‘viruses’ 🤔

When thinking about it, Osmund Saddler was able to control his hosts, read thoughts, see what they see, give instructions etc. Mother Miranda was not able to do that, but only injected her subjects with the Megamycete, with only a few ‘worthy’ enough to survive, maintain their consciousness and obtain superhuman like powers primarily to resurrect her daughter. If Miranda could read minds etc, she would have definitely figured the cyborg army that Heisenberg was creating and shut him down immediately. While Eveline could do similar mind control tactics like Saddler, she was a bio weapon experimentation, Saddler was not an experiment. The Las Plagas could still be more powerful than the Megamycete 🤔
Villians dont always have to have a tragic or complex backstory. What makes a villain great is how they interact with the protagonist. Take Frieza, he's about as deep as a puddle and the least sympathetic kind of person you can think off. Yet he's among the most iconic villians of DBZ. That's all because his selfishness is the polar opposite to Goku's altruism and the resulting conflict of ideals and streangth makes the conflict the most memberable out of all in the series. Or Cell with how he's the dark reflection of the hero's will to fight treating it all like a game like how Goku does. And I dont need to explain Optimus Prime and Megatron. Saddler's a good villain not because he's complex, but because of the scale of his goals that contridict the very nature of humanity what what it results are. That and his overall presence in the story make him good overall.
You’re really capitalizing on Resident Evil 4 Remake here. Good on ya. And yeah in some ways, Osmund Saddler is an absolutely crazy villain in wanting to control literally everyone and completely destroy free will itself. In some ways I could kind of understand why he’s doing what he’s doing because there have been instances throughout history where free will has caused calamities such as terrorism. However two wrongs do not make a right. Wesley Snipes’s Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man said it himself: “You can’t take away people’s rights to be assholes.”

The great part about the new version of saddler is that it’s hard to really tell whether saddler wants to control everybody or genuinely believes that he’s giving the world a gift… the original version makes him seem very self aware, but the remake version he always speak in religious metaphors and they’ve reshaped his character as seemingly truly religious about plagas, which makes him a much more interesting villain… They also did such a good rework on Krauser and Salazar, specifically Krauser. Salazar is way creepier and his boss fight is a lot more intense in this game. But Krauser honestly stole the show big time imo, saddler was improved but the new version of Krauser has become one of my favorite villains aside from wesker in all of RE. I also think that maybe Krauser’s introduction was so good that it set up saddlers introduction for failure. In the original game, I think that moment where he used that giant tentacle to stab Luis was the moment you were looking for in this game, and I agree that this game was missing that moment for saddler… but as far as creating more balance for Krauser and Saddler as villains, I really think that change helped Krauser a lot more than it hurt saddler, especially with how limited saddler is on screen now, giving him a more mysterious, unyielding entity feel. All in all, Saddler was more improved with really only that missing display of raw power. I wonder if they could have had him wound Ada or something like that, and save his intro for reaching that main cave area for worship where we find Ashley the last time. But regardless, near perfect game all around, with very few shortcomings.

I didn’t like Krauser in this one tbh. His whole story got boiled down to “guy went crazy in the jungle” compared to the cold mercenary that was distrustful of his partner and wanted to get rid of her as soon as he could. The new one reminds me of a G.I. Joe villain.
I liked Saddler in the original, but I ADORE him in the remake. They nailed the design, the actor is WAY better, etc. I love how Saddler is calm and collected until the final boss, because leon keeps rejecting his "sacred gift." Saddler, along with Krauser and Salazar make RE4 remake my most favorite game in the series. The only nitpicks i have with remake saddler: he becomes a giant flesh monster in his second phase, and it kind of ruins the fight for me, and there's no "Cliches" line. I am really excited for how they do Wesker in the upcoming RE5 remake. And who knows? They might even make an RE6 remake.

So, the Las Plagas are basically mindflayers from DnD. It's cool how Sadler is much more threatening in the remake than the Saturday morning cartoon villain from the original.
No. Mindflayers have some sense of individuality as mindflayers, they for an example have a sense of self preservation. Mindflayers also retain nothing of the being who's body they took over. They also have unity of form, the Las plagas manifests itself in different forms and random mutations while most mindlfayers are roughly the same. That said your basic mindflayer is also a lot more powerful than a basic plaga infested human.
I think saddler may be in partial control of himself however the fact that he wants to forgive Leon and give him the gift shows that the parasites needs go above saddlers wants and needs. A parasites main focus is to live and transfer to as many hosts as possible. I think he has control over how he spreads the parasite but only because the parasite knows that it wasn’t doing a good job of spreading without saddler. Fuckin’ awesome video by the way! Love it.
@@malucoblz588 yeah I think he’s fully aware and he’s in control of most of what he does but I think he only has control if he isn’t ruining the parasites main focus which is to spread to as many hosts as possible. I think that’s why the parasite makes him forgive Leon over and over.
It's reinforced in the game that like reality a parasite can Influence it's hosts actions while they themselves may still be "in control" so this definitely could be the case
They say the more lies you tell, the more you start believing in your own lies. I truly think Saddler is an example of what happens when you convince yourself so frequently that what you’re doing is the right thing when anyone else with a brain knows it isn’t.
Good video overall. I didn't get to sit all that long with the new lore during my playthrough of the game, so this was a really fun listen. I really appreciated that they chose to add more depth to Saddler now that he was going to be taken more seriously in the story. He wasn't just a hypocrite/liar/caricature of a cult leader like he was in the original, and instead his villainy was a lot less overt/blunt. Only thing I think I disagreed with here was how you interpreted his first scene meeting the protagonists. To be fair, in the original, Saddler just "shows up" multiple times with little fanfare, and very goofily leaves with little impact on the story. The remake recontextualizes these beats to not have him involved directly, and makes them more impactful (in part due to his absence). The first scene where he meets the heroes in the remake also makes contextual sense and carries some pretty significant weight. He very nearly forces Ashley to kill Leon, and a total fluke is what stops this. He could also have been on his way to collect Ashley from the facility they were holding her in, so it's not as random as his appearances in the original. That being said, if you still think they could've done more to build him up as the villain in that scene, I guess I can understand that. Agree to disagree.
I want a “What If” game where you play as Leon who gets sucked into a wormhole and is transported to an alternate universe where Las Plagas has taken over the world and become part of the small last remaining human resistance trying to fight back against the Plagas and you become the John Connor of that universe who must lead it and defeat the main central Plaga that controls all the others.
Gonna be honest, Ashley's got some pretty damn good aim! I've seen people barely handle a pistol yet while resisting Saddler's control she one-shots each of the peons behind Leon before failing to resist pulling the trigger on Leon himself. Lucky the pistol jammed.
I would call what Saddler has full control. I think it's more like instructions with the direction control being more limited. This would explain how stealth killing won't immediately cause everyone to come and kill you. Ashley resisting late may also be because she's now aware that this can happen. Last there's also the dominate strain of plagues that Saddler might have little or no control over. In the last game Krouser had one. That's why he had control on when he would transform and allow him to act more effectively
While Saddler is great in the remake. The problem is how very little presence he has. Difference between the original and the remake is Leon and Ashley meets Salazar from the Church and he's a large and looming threat. Leon literally meets Saddler in the final two chapters. He should've been a constant presence from the church to the island. The one positive thing about Saddler is they showcased how bad Religious Extremism/Cults can get and Saddler's done so creepy and those little cuts to Saddler were ominous, but did so little for him.
You're really picking your games. No joke, each game that has been a remake or remaster that you've talked about hit me so deeply, for one reason only. The fact that my inner child kicks in. I was a little boy when I enjoyed all these games from the age of 4-5 to my teens. Now I'm a 24 year old women, who absolutely loves these remakes and loves hearing people talk about them, and I'm so glad you're talking about them. You're even going into the best game in the series right now. If they remake code Veronica with this same love in mind, and you review, I'm going to start setting your videos into their own folders so I can re-listen at any time, lol.
I really like this rendition of Saddler. I my opinion he comes off as a Well intentioned Extremist who fully believes in his religion. He's one of the two villains in Resident Evil villains who's ambitions make any sense to me (the other one being Wesker, who sought human "evolution" no matter the cost). In my opinion, Saddler really did want a better world filled with peace and unity, and I don't think that the state of the Island or the Village properly display the "Ideal world" he wished to create, but rather the penance and sacrifice he believed humanity needed to reach it. He seemed to be having almost all of his followers working full-time slave labor in the mines trying to unearth enough Plagas to use to infect the entire world, and in doing so led created the horrifying setting Leon encountered. With all the work that needed to be done, his followers had no time for rest, hygiene, or even the ability to cultivate enough food for them to feed themselves. With no food available his followers had to turn to subside off of rotten food and human sacrifices, all in the name of a "Greater Good". While I viewed the original Saddler as arrogant in how he treated Leon as a threat (or lack there-of), I view this one as simply trying to use violence as a last resort, and preferring to spread his "gift" Saddler was not only pleased with the "superior plagas" that allowed for much higher level intelligence, but even went on to start plans to mass produce them, showing that he didn't want mindless followers, as so far as it didn't disrupt the peace. The scariest thing about this version of Saddler, to me, is the fact that he may be the only villain I can think of off the top of my head, who's sees himself as wholly benevolent leader, and if he won, might have even been able to create a "better world"

The only thing I think they could have done better was to either include Saddler more in person (like in OG RE4) or give us more visions with him. His character was fleshed out more, but his physical absence was felt
One things that both adds and takes from the OG is the absence of Saddler outside of visions, in the original he suddenly appears in the church, then vanishes, then appears in the castle, takes the sample, leaves like nothing, here he's only in the Island which doesn't have him teleporting around.
They took a totally different direction than I thought they would with the remake. I was thinking that Saddler was an Umbrella researcher who worked on the Nemesis parasite and refined it into the Plaga parasite now unconstrained by any sort of higher company authority.
Now that you mention it, his name is an interesting red herring. His first name is Norse and his last name is English (a "saddler" being someone who makes saddles...). You would intuitively assume he was an Outsider to the whole region. But it turns out from the epitaphs and the monolith, he's not.

Big correction; Saddler doesn't want a world full of stupid goons. The Village is not a reflection of the world Saddler is trying to create, it's simply the "leftovers" of his plan. There are 3 variants of the Las Plagas parasite; the first is the "original" plagas, or as Luis calls them in his research notes "Diminutive Plagas" Saddler calls them "Recessive Plagas" they probably are talking about the same kind. These are the Plagas that have infected the villagers, they are the original strain of plagas that make the hosts violent, stupid, and incapable of following complex instructions or having original thoughts, they basically have rabies that gives them super strength and durability. More importantly they are mindlessly obedient to the second strain of Plagas; Dominant Plagas, this is the kind of Plagas that Saddler, Salazar, Krauser, and Mendez all have. These Plagas not only allow them to keep their free-will and intellect, but also gives them direct control over all other types of Plagas as well as granting enormous power. Lastly we have the Plagas that Luis and his team of researchers perfected shortly before Luis betrayed Los Illuminados; Higher or Greater Plagas. These are the Plagas that both Leon and Ashley are infected with. They are the key to Saddlers plan for world domination. These Plagas *only* make the recipient subservient to the Dominant strain of Plagas. There are no other downsides. (other than having a giant insect living inside you.) You keep your intelligence, you keep your knowledge, your skills, even your basic personality remains roughly the same. But once it becomes mature you become perfectly obedient and loyal to whoever has the dominant strain. Luis's team of researchers were all forced to be injected with this strain, and he immediately noticed how his coworkers became fanatically loyal to Saddler. For some reason Saddler didn't immediately inject Luis with this strain with his coworkers, perhaps he respected Luis's free will enough like he does with Salazar and Mendez, or perhaps it was simply an oversight, but he only injected Luis with this strain when he found out Luis was trying to hide The Amber from him, probably as insurance. Without this strain Saddlers plan was completely impossible because the second people saw the US president going sicko mode and start trying to kill citizens with a hatchet he'd be locked up and they'd find out about the Plagas and probably start quarantine around the world. But with the new strain the president would be entirely and utterly the same with only 2 major differences, he would become highly resistant to damage, and perfectly obedient to Saddler. tl;dr Ashley and Leon were infected with a better version of the Plagas parasite which would allow them to retain her intellect and personality with the only change being obedience to Saddler. The Village is therefore not a good reflection of the world Saddler is realistically trying to create.
I find it interesting how they reimagined Saddler's character. In OG he's a campy B-Movie villain, mocking Leon and lampshading B-Movie tropes/cliches, however, that didn't stop him from being intimidating (especially if you played Separate Ways). In the Remake I like how the writers went all in on the Cult Leader motif for Saddler. Even though the Plagas are more Curse than Blessing Saddler believes with his entire being they are a gift from God (hence why he looked so offended when Leon removed his Plaga). Honestly, he's arguably even more terrifying in Remake because he plays the Cult Leader persona completely straight and the looming horror that through the Plagas, he is ALWAYS watching you. Osmund Saddler, same character, 2 completely different takes.
I feel like a really good video idea would be a character analysis of Luiz He was done so well in the remake of RE4 and his story is so tragic with his connection to the creation of Nemesis and the his tragic childhood.
You know part of me was thinking that saddler never existed in the remake and that the final boss against saddler would be entirely in Leon's head as the plaga was being removed
Since this villain was a cult leader, I think it would be good to reference the cult in Sally Face called the devourers of god. I can’t explain any of it but I think it would make a great deconstruction of villainy video, and generally you talking about the game I’m general (especially it’s characters) would be awesome, another game with a great villain is Undertale (Flowey/Asriel), the characters in that game are amazing too which would make some amazing videos tbh
My favorite line in the remake is when you pull off a finishing kick. Leon says, "Sorry, must've slipped" he has funny one liners which is why I loved evil dead & Bruce Campbell as well
To this day I’ve hear people say Saddler is unrealistic because he could’ve just killed Leon in so many instances. The point is that he was essentially just stalling. Since Leon and Ashley are already infected, Saddler thinks he won. Besides, returning Ashley with Leon would make more sense and be less suspicious than just sending her back
I think the line "speaker for our lord" is quite key. That's what I think he views himself as, the mouth of the Plagas. His merging of his mind with the parasite has made him think that his will is what the plagas wants, and he is only a vessel for that message. Strikes me as a bit of cognitive dissonance to explain the fact that the motivation is also power.
I know there wasn't facial mocap. And some folks have said he looks like Isao Katsuragi. But from what I've seen. He has more of a Ralph Fiennes a'la Voldemort with a nose. His facial expressions and head movements, the way he walks, all gives me that Vibe.
In the Original RE4, the Plagas takes after its host, which makes Saddler hesitant to just give the dominant strain to anyone. He needs to choose people loyal enough to him to be infected else the Plagas might rebel against him.
He’s a very interesting villain with the way he does things with the parasite like his ancestors. They really pushed the cult things in re4 remake and I’m fine with that. Also I think he was in control of the plaga but was corrupted in the sense of wanting control. Maybe he’s in control to an extent.
I STRONGLY disagree with the idea that Saddler wandering in unannounced is a case of bad writing: He's very confident in himself, and while up to that point he does seem very powerful only through his influence, then showing up without seeming to care about how the two of them have so far carved their way through his minions shows he (at least thinks he) is so far above them in capability he not only doesn't care about any threat they pose, he probably can't care. Then taking a bullet to the head without more than a simple flinch proves that he isn't some weak, easy to defeat commander, but another creature of equal or greater threat than what's come before. Coupled with that is that he can also make sure neither of them could face them simply through mental domination at that point. There's no need to be bombastic or overt on his part, and his chillingly calm attitude is what makes him a genuinely terrifying threat. He's like a talkative, religious Michael Myers: Implacable and unstoppable.
Also i think he and the parasite actually fully become one during the fight. You can hear him literally say he is giving up all his humanity, what little their was anyway, to become a god everlasting, after that he doesn't say a single word afterwards, just growling and parasitic noises. Just listen to him during the fight.

Saddler is either an Anglo Saxon or German name in origin, if his origin is truly in Spain then it likely goes back at least 1000 years or maybe more recently from the German sphere of Europe; depending on whatever origin it comes from.
To be fair the Habsburgs or at least a Line of them became the Monarchs of Spain by the 16th century and its possible that somehow Nobility of German Origin established themselves in the 15th.

His line about sinners being those most in need of forgiveness is something that gets to me. So often you see religious nut jobs in popular media who use their belief as an excuse to do whatever evil bullshit they want. Now, Saddler does do that too, don't get me wrong. But there are *very few* religious villains who are willing to forgive the protagonist. It just continues to hammer in the idea that Saddler truly believes what he preaches.

Personally i think that its not him talking and that it’s the nature of the plagas talking through him and making him think its his own decisions, similar to how the real life “zombie” fungus works.
So, in short, he could have been a normal person before stumbling upon the Plagas, hence why he kept a machine to kill the parasite without harming the host. Makes a lot more sense to me. 😎

To be fair, he himself has been indoctrinated to believe in the Plagas since his entire family has been involved with the parasite for generations. I actually think Sadler's reintroduction in the warehouse, without any fan-fair or drama, was not an oversight or disservice, but meant by the writers to illustrate that he was not some deity or priest, and not some ever present evil force of nature; but instead that he was a charlatan, "pretender to the throne". That his power came not from divinity, but from a house of cards built on a lie; like every cult leader before him, he was a bug masquerading as a god.

I love this new Leon. OG Leon is a nonchalant chad with the charm of a campy action hero. New Leon, while having sprinkles of that campiness still, is basically the embodiment of Frank Castle's Punisher. Instead of letting any of the villains monologue away like it's out of an anime (as it felt in 2005), new Leon will quickly dome that villain with a gun before that villain tries anything. I laughed hard when Leon DGAF and shoots Salazar in their final confrontation and does the same thing when he finally meets Saddler in the flesh.
Leon shooting the villains and not letting them finish their villain Speech is just as good as Leon Throwing a knife at Salazar's hand.

I completely disagree about Saddler's in person introduction. The subdued entrance wasn't just him wandering. In fact, it's very appropriate given that the warehouse you're in contains many plaga in amber. He even says to both Leon and Ashley upon entering to prostrate themselves before the plagas because of how holy he sees them as. The writers were showing Saddler off in the most terrifying way. He wasn't just some insane megalomaniac with world domination on the mind. He presented himself as a stern yet humble priest, completely unbothered by how far the pair have gotten. It communicates one thing and one thing only: they aren't a problem and never have been the moment they were infected. That sort of quiet confidence is felt by the player and showing just how helpless Leon and Ashley were reinforces this very idea. I see this interaction as the writers creating a sort of silent horror to Saddler. He doesn't need to be loud, bombastic or outwardly threatening to solidify his role as the big bad. The subtlety and nonchalant vibe of the whole interaction speaks volumes as to how fr above Saddler is compared to our heroes at that moment. He is indeed a god and Leon and Ashley were just as he said, lost lambs
Thanks for voicing my thoughts better than I could. That part of the video is probably the only part I disagreed on, as I for one found his introduction in that moment, completely out of nowhere, far more intimidating than entering a grandiose room that’s obviously leading up to you meeting the big bad. Of course Saddler would be on his way to retrieve Ashley, while also introducing himself in a way that’s supposed to feel humble and giving nod to the sacredness of the place Leon and Ashley had ended up. His appearance wasn’t random, just majorly unexpected, and that’s what I feel is the brilliance of that scene. Not expecting the big bad to show up in such a dingy warehouse, that is.
I also love how calm and almost "understanding" Saddler is. He seems to almost acknowledge that the plagas are weird and confusing, and almost tries to calm Leon and Ashley down, right up until the moment Leon shoots him. When that happens, he goes into full killer instinct mode and basically almost ends the entire game within ten seconds. Leon definitely doesn't want his gift, and he hates that.

It is true that not a lot of cult leader villains actually believe in what they're preaching. I think that when the leader actually believes in the vision, that just makes them more dangerous and horrifying.

I don't think Los Illuminados would have ever been able to win for one reason: Wesker. He is easily capable of stopping this whole thing, and he has a reason to. Wesker's goal is a darwainist trial by fire for humanity defined by anarchy and strength, which is not really possible in the world Saddler wanted. If Leon, Ada, and Ashley were all gone, he'd probably just go in himself, get some samples of the plagas, and destroy the rest.

I think it's worth noting that Saddler seems to lose control over the Plaga as you go further in the boss fight. While at first he seems to be the dominant one, his coherent speech soon gets replaced by monotonous words and babbling, showing that not even him is immune to being controlled by the parasite.
One other thing I noticed was the further u go into the boss fight ,the more u hear saddler speakin the words his ganados spoke whn fighting leon,like the ganado lines,he's saying them as if their "souls" or Minds are within him even after leon put them down,implying tht if ur a plaga infected and u get put down,ur still trapped as long as saddler or the greater hivemind is still alive
The parasite seems much more terrifying than dying and being reanimated by the virus to me. The thought of some part of me still being alive and screaming for control while being a slave in my own body? Thats scary.

The diary of the mine worker went from "I am sorry I couldn't be with my kid because of work" became "I am so happy to work day and night for my lord".

I find it funny that if Leon explained las plagas to Hunnigan, Saddler's plan would never work. Even if Leon died and Ashley was fully turned and then returned to the US, they would know that Ashley could be compromised
To be fair, the plan changed once Leon showed up. If I recall she was supposed to be ransomed and none would be the wiser about her mind control bug, but then a guy with bioterrorism experience shows up to save her, finds out the details, and from there it just went to shit for Saddler in increasingly dramatic and explosive ways.
Of course, if they performed anything more than a basic medical examination when she got back, they probably would have noticed anyway. The only way it would have worked is that they didn't do any bloodwork or scans on her and she quietly infected her dad before the cat got out of the bag, but that could theoretically be all it took.
Way too much of a stretch to make Saddler seem more than semi-competent, really. It was a 50/50 shot at best.

Given how Saddler is able to continue talking after he goes final boss, I like to believe we never met Osmund, it was the Plagas using him as a proxy and translator so they could contextualize their ambitions in a form that humanity can comprehend.
Well to be fair we never actually see what would happen IF villains actually killed Leon\Chris

It was never explained if they could revert back to their original form, but there are several hints in RE4-5 that this is likely to be true, such as Saddler retracting one of his tentacles after killing Louis, Salazar mentioning that he's not "like those Ganados" and remains in control and Krauser remains in control of himself after transforming. Wesker also remains in control despite his transformation, while other "Uroboros" like nameless dude and Excella completely lose control of themselves.
Even Brett believed that Saddler was just completely merged with his Plagas parasite, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he began starting waxing poetic about how great being infected is even after fully transforming into a giant spider monster.
The thought of the possibility saddler the man never existed,tht it was just the parasite usin a form we humans can comprehend is legit eldtritch horror material,it makes the parasite appear more as an extraterrestrial lifeform,esp whn u take into account saddler didn't just wanna rule the world,he wanted every single organic/sentient lifeform on the planet to b a part of "him" even animals

Absolutely agree 100%! As a small creative writer, I look at other characters (good, evil, and neutral) and pick up certain themes and tones. Saddler is absolutely incredible and gives me many chills! Love it!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they at least heard of each other but didn’t consider the other a threat (Saddler could detest the Megamycyte for being uncontrollable by the usual means, Miranda could detest the Las Plagas parasite for not being able to fulfill her goals). Besides, RE8 repeats a couple of the character beats of RE4 (Miranda is Saddler, Moreau and Lady D are Salazar, Chris is Krauser for a short bit, the Duke is the Merchant, etc) so it wouldn’t surprise me.

The more I think about Saddler's goals about Las Plagas, the more frightening it felt as his ambitions of uniting every sentient mind in the world (human, animal, fish, etc.) were deathly close and all sense of individuality would be non-existent indefinitely... 😨😨😨 Honestly, the remake cemented this fact and it was lucky that Leon arrived on time to save Ashley. I don't even want to imagine what could have been.

Maybe if RE4 Remake gets more side-content, we'll see more of him. In the same way, I strongly believe U3 (the Black Verdugo) will show up in a Ada DLC.
Hopefully when Separate Ways comes around, there’s a boss fight in the ceremonial chambers with Saddler with his tentacles, bullet sponging and bullet redirection.
I've always loved to hate the cult leader villain in horror due to how unnerving and horrifying they are. Saddler is like everything I hate about the them turned to max. Like his motivations are crazy.
A really interesting detail form the original Saddler is that he cares for the lesser leaders like Mendez and Salazar. There's a note in the original talking about how he's distraught of their deaths and that Leon will pay. I always thought of Saddler to be wearing a zealous façade and manipulative so that he could reach his goal to rule the world. But now that I've see this video, you have convinced me to believe that he might not be fake as I thought he would.
You have to remember that People from the original games were less in control of Saddler than remake and if Saddler came to them as a selfish Psychopath, those people would rebel. So he had to put a facade of caring about Mendez and Salazar. Even near the end, he doesn't seem to care that Leon killed 3 of his greatest men and also just removed the parasites. He is just enjoying it.
The Keenan Saddler epitaph is intriguing suggesting that the Plagas play a bigger role in the RE universe. It reminds me of the RE 3 remake when Jill reads a file in Nest 2 that says the Nemesis program was made possible by the European Umbrella branch by introducing a PARASITE into a tyrant. And who was on the Umbrella Europe branch team? LUIS. The Plagas research made a Tyrant more controllable. The RE remakes seem to be more about tying all the games together rather than just mere graphics and gameplay updates. We are for sure going to get RE 5 remake given the Excella and the Stairway of the Sun easter eggs in the ending cutscenes of this game. I’m curious as to how the Progenitor virus ties into the Plagas and the Mold.

I liked Saddler talking about ending violence and death with complete global saturation of the parasite, playing at the guilt Leon was still feeling at the beginning of the game for surviving raccoon city and wanting to prevent another one. Both saddler and krauser tried to appeal to Leon at different points to join them using all the crap the government pulled on him like forcibly conscripting him and taking Sherry but he's still that naive idealist he was in RE2 despite all the trauma. They did a good job connecting RE4 better to the overall universe with the remake, if they make it all the way back to RE6 there'll be a lot more reason for Leon to hate Simmons now
While most of the things you've said about Saddler are spot on, in the beginning you said he'd "erase free will" and that "there would be no resistance", but that's not entirely accurate.
While it is true that if Saddler is directly in front of you, you can do very little to resist and even if you try you'll be very weakened (like what happened to Leon in the REmake), Saddler still needs outside forces to control his minions - which is why he created the cult. Saddler can control everyone - but only if they're in his presence. When out of his sight, he "just" has a massive influence over others through his orders. The biggest examples of this are Leon and Ashley, but even Krauser willingly joined them and managed to keep his original personality after being infected. And lastly, the Merchant is very clearly an infected individual, but he manages to go around wherever he pleases and help Leon by selling him guns.
I don't doubt that Saddler would do everything in his power to erase free will, and he'd be more competent at it than most villains given the Las Plaguas' power, but by no means would his influence be absolute.
It’s sad he didn’t get any goofy interactions with Leon. In the original, Leon makes a joke about how old Saddler is over FaceTime and he just laughs along like “Oh ho! Ahhh that was a good one”

That really won't work in the remake tone wise, Sadler in the OG was a self aware Campy Villain that fit the tone of game, Remake Sadler is more of a threat and takes himself more seriously.
Basically the difference between the OG and Remake is the difference between the Moore Bond films to the Modern ones, in the Moore Bond films the tone is complete Camp and the Villains are a Campy to fit the tone and are at times self aware of that fact, in the Craig Era though that wouldn't work, while it does still retain the camp it takes itself way too seriously to fit stuff like a Balloon Kill for the main Villain.

Theory: the 'brethren' mentioned in that monument could refer to both the plaga and the Megamycete mold. An interesting detail found in the mines is that a file entry mentions that workers excavating the tunnels breathed in "spores" of some kind. What if the Plaga and the Megamycete both share a common ancestor? The hive mind is underground, from Spain to as far as Romania, where Village takes place. If so, than there is an incredibly old, massive life form that is just sleeping under the European continent.

That’s a very good observation, I also noticed in the RE 4 remake the introduction of the ‘Black Goo’ substance that was used in both RE7 and RE8 with the Megamycete.
It’s very possible that the Las Plagas and the Megamycete are distant earth bound cousins. Mind control and hallucinations are shared by both ‘viruses’

When thinking about it, Osmund Saddler was able to control his hosts, read thoughts, see what they see, give instructions etc. Mother Miranda was not able to do that, but only injected her subjects with the Megamycete, with only a few ‘worthy’ enough to survive, maintain their consciousness and obtain superhuman like powers primarily to resurrect her daughter. If Miranda could read minds etc, she would have definitely figured the cyborg army that Heisenberg was creating and shut him down immediately.
While Eveline could do similar mind control tactics like Saddler, she was a bio weapon experimentation, Saddler was not an experiment. The Las Plagas could still be more powerful than the Megamycete 🤔
Villians dont always have to have a tragic or complex backstory. What makes a villain great is how they interact with the protagonist.
Take Frieza, he's about as deep as a puddle and the least sympathetic kind of person you can think off. Yet he's among the most iconic villians of DBZ. That's all because his selfishness is the polar opposite to Goku's altruism and the resulting conflict of ideals and streangth makes the conflict the most memberable out of all in the series. Or Cell with how he's the dark reflection of the hero's will to fight treating it all like a game like how Goku does. And I dont need to explain Optimus Prime and Megatron.
Saddler's a good villain not because he's complex, but because of the scale of his goals that contridict the very nature of humanity what what it results are. That and his overall presence in the story make him good overall.
You’re really capitalizing on Resident Evil 4 Remake here. Good on ya. And yeah in some ways, Osmund Saddler is an absolutely crazy villain in wanting to control literally everyone and completely destroy free will itself.
In some ways I could kind of understand why he’s doing what he’s doing because there have been instances throughout history where free will has caused calamities such as terrorism. However two wrongs do not make a right. Wesley Snipes’s Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man said it himself: “You can’t take away people’s rights to be assholes.”

The great part about the new version of saddler is that it’s hard to really tell whether saddler wants to control everybody or genuinely believes that he’s giving the world a gift… the original version makes him seem very self aware, but the remake version he always speak in religious metaphors and they’ve reshaped his character as seemingly truly religious about plagas, which makes him a much more interesting villain…
They also did such a good rework on Krauser and Salazar, specifically Krauser. Salazar is way creepier and his boss fight is a lot more intense in this game. But Krauser honestly stole the show big time imo, saddler was improved but the new version of Krauser has become one of my favorite villains aside from wesker in all of RE. I also think that maybe Krauser’s introduction was so good that it set up saddlers introduction for failure.
In the original game, I think that moment where he used that giant tentacle to stab Luis was the moment you were looking for in this game, and I agree that this game was missing that moment for saddler… but as far as creating more balance for Krauser and Saddler as villains, I really think that change helped Krauser a lot more than it hurt saddler, especially with how limited saddler is on screen now, giving him a more mysterious, unyielding entity feel.
All in all, Saddler was more improved with really only that missing display of raw power. I wonder if they could have had him wound Ada or something like that, and save his intro for reaching that main cave area for worship where we find Ashley the last time. But regardless, near perfect game all around, with very few shortcomings.

I didn’t like Krauser in this one tbh. His whole story got boiled down to “guy went crazy in the jungle” compared to the cold mercenary that was distrustful of his partner and wanted to get rid of her as soon as he could. The new one reminds me of a G.I. Joe villain.

I liked Saddler in the original, but I ADORE him in the remake. They nailed the design, the actor is WAY better, etc. I love how Saddler is calm and collected until the final boss, because leon keeps rejecting his "sacred gift." Saddler, along with Krauser and Salazar make RE4 remake my most favorite game in the series. The only nitpicks i have with remake saddler: he becomes a giant flesh monster in his second phase, and it kind of ruins the fight for me, and there's no "Cliches" line. I am really excited for how they do Wesker in the upcoming RE5 remake. And who knows? They might even make an RE6 remake.

No. Mindflayers have some sense of individuality as mindflayers, they for an example have a sense of self preservation. Mindflayers also retain nothing of the being who's body they took over. They also have unity of form, the Las plagas manifests itself in different forms and random mutations while most mindlfayers are roughly the same.
That said your basic mindflayer is also a lot more powerful than a basic plaga infested human.

I think saddler may be in partial control of himself however the fact that he wants to forgive Leon and give him the gift shows that the parasites needs go above saddlers wants and needs. A parasites main focus is to live and transfer to as many hosts as possible. I think he has control over how he spreads the parasite but only because the parasite knows that it wasn’t doing a good job of spreading without saddler. Fuckin’ awesome video by the way! Love it.
During his fight, Saddler says something like, "praise me until my cup overflows", i guess he is fully aware.

It's reinforced in the game that like reality a parasite can Influence it's hosts actions while they themselves may still be "in control" so this definitely could be the case

I love Leon's trigger discipline in the cut senses
Good video overall. I didn't get to sit all that long with the new lore during my playthrough of the game, so this was a really fun listen. I really appreciated that they chose to add more depth to Saddler now that he was going to be taken more seriously in the story. He wasn't just a hypocrite/liar/caricature of a cult leader like he was in the original, and instead his villainy was a lot less overt/blunt. Only thing I think I disagreed with here was how you interpreted his first scene meeting the protagonists.
To be fair, in the original, Saddler just "shows up" multiple times with little fanfare, and very goofily leaves with little impact on the story. The remake recontextualizes these beats to not have him involved directly, and makes them more impactful (in part due to his absence). The first scene where he meets the heroes in the remake also makes contextual sense and carries some pretty significant weight. He very nearly forces Ashley to kill Leon, and a total fluke is what stops this. He could also have been on his way to collect Ashley from the facility they were holding her in, so it's not as random as his appearances in the original. That being said, if you still think they could've done more to build him up as the villain in that scene, I guess I can understand that. Agree to disagree.
I want a “What If” game where you play as Leon who gets sucked into a wormhole and is transported to an alternate universe where Las Plagas has taken over the world and become part of the small last remaining human resistance trying to fight back against the Plagas and you become the John Connor of that universe who must lead it and defeat the main central Plaga that controls all the others.
Gonna be honest, Ashley's got some pretty damn good aim! I've seen people barely handle a pistol yet while resisting Saddler's control she one-shots each of the peons behind Leon before failing to resist pulling the trigger on Leon himself. Lucky the pistol jammed.

I would call what Saddler has full control. I think it's more like instructions with the direction control being more limited. This would explain how stealth killing won't immediately cause everyone to come and kill you. Ashley resisting late may also be because she's now aware that this can happen. Last there's also the dominate strain of plagues that Saddler might have little or no control over. In the last game Krouser had one. That's why he had control on when he would transform and allow him to act more effectively
While Saddler is great in the remake. The problem is how very little presence he has. Difference between the original and the remake is Leon and Ashley meets Salazar from the Church and he's a large and looming threat. Leon literally meets Saddler in the final two chapters. He should've been a constant presence from the church to the island. The one positive thing about Saddler is they showcased how bad Religious Extremism/Cults can get and Saddler's done so creepy and those little cuts to Saddler were ominous, but did so little for him.

I really like this rendition of Saddler. I my opinion he comes off as a Well intentioned Extremist who fully believes in his religion. He's one of the two villains in Resident Evil villains who's ambitions make any sense to me (the other one being Wesker, who sought human "evolution" no matter the cost).
In my opinion, Saddler really did want a better world filled with peace and unity, and I don't think that the state of the Island or the Village properly display the "Ideal world" he wished to create, but rather the penance and sacrifice he believed humanity needed to reach it.
He seemed to be having almost all of his followers working full-time slave labor in the mines trying to unearth enough Plagas to use to infect the entire world, and in doing so led created the horrifying setting Leon encountered. With all the work that needed to be done, his followers had no time for rest, hygiene, or even the ability to cultivate enough food for them to feed themselves. With no food available his followers had to turn to subside off of rotten food and human sacrifices, all in the name of a "Greater Good".
While I viewed the original Saddler as arrogant in how he treated Leon as a threat (or lack there-of), I view this one as simply trying to use violence as a last resort, and preferring to spread his "gift"
Saddler was not only pleased with the "superior plagas" that allowed for much higher level intelligence, but even went on to start plans to mass produce them, showing that he didn't want mindless followers, as so far as it didn't disrupt the peace.
The scariest thing about this version of Saddler, to me, is the fact that he may be the only villain I can think of off the top of my head, who's sees himself as wholly benevolent leader, and if he won, might have even been able to create a "better world"

The only thing I think they could have done better was to either include Saddler more in person (like in OG RE4) or give us more visions with him. His character was fleshed out more, but his physical absence was felt
One things that both adds and takes from the OG is the absence of Saddler outside of visions, in the original he suddenly appears in the church, then vanishes, then appears in the castle, takes the sample, leaves like nothing, here he's only in the Island which doesn't have him teleporting around.
They took a totally different direction than I thought they would with the remake. I was thinking that Saddler was an Umbrella researcher who worked on the Nemesis parasite and refined it into the Plaga parasite now unconstrained by any sort of higher company authority.
well they made Luis a former umbrella scientist and he worked on the same team of scientists who created Nemesis T-type.
Now that you mention it, his name is an interesting red herring. His first name is Norse and his last name is English (a "saddler" being someone who makes saddles...). You would intuitively assume he was an Outsider to the whole region. But it turns out from the epitaphs and the monolith, he's not.

Big correction; Saddler doesn't want a world full of stupid goons. The Village is not a reflection of the world Saddler is trying to create, it's simply the "leftovers" of his plan.
There are 3 variants of the Las Plagas parasite; the first is the "original" plagas, or as Luis calls them in his research notes "Diminutive Plagas" Saddler calls them "Recessive Plagas" they probably are talking about the same kind. These are the Plagas that have infected the villagers, they are the original strain of plagas that make the hosts violent, stupid, and incapable of following complex instructions or having original thoughts, they basically have rabies that gives them super strength and durability.
More importantly they are mindlessly obedient to the second strain of Plagas; Dominant Plagas, this is the kind of Plagas that Saddler, Salazar, Krauser, and Mendez all have. These Plagas not only allow them to keep their free-will and intellect, but also gives them direct control over all other types of Plagas as well as granting enormous power.
Lastly we have the Plagas that Luis and his team of researchers perfected shortly before Luis betrayed Los Illuminados; Higher or Greater Plagas. These are the Plagas that both Leon and Ashley are infected with. They are the key to Saddlers plan for world domination. These Plagas *only* make the recipient subservient to the Dominant strain of Plagas. There are no other downsides. (other than having a giant insect living inside you.)
You keep your intelligence, you keep your knowledge, your skills, even your basic personality remains roughly the same. But once it becomes mature you become perfectly obedient and loyal to whoever has the dominant strain. Luis's team of researchers were all forced to be injected with this strain, and he immediately noticed how his coworkers became fanatically loyal to Saddler. For some reason Saddler didn't immediately inject Luis with this strain with his coworkers, perhaps he respected Luis's free will enough like he does with Salazar and Mendez, or perhaps it was simply an oversight, but he only injected Luis with this strain when he found out Luis was trying to hide The Amber from him, probably as insurance.
Without this strain Saddlers plan was completely impossible because the second people saw the US president going sicko mode and start trying to kill citizens with a hatchet he'd be locked up and they'd find out about the Plagas and probably start quarantine around the world. But with the new strain the president would be entirely and utterly the same with only 2 major differences, he would become highly resistant to damage, and perfectly obedient to Saddler.
tl;dr Ashley and Leon were infected with a better version of the Plagas parasite which would allow them to retain her intellect and personality with the only change being obedience to Saddler. The Village is therefore not a good reflection of the world Saddler is realistically trying to create.
Most underrated channel on the site
I find it interesting how they reimagined Saddler's character. In OG he's a campy B-Movie villain, mocking Leon and lampshading B-Movie tropes/cliches, however, that didn't stop him from being intimidating (especially if you played Separate Ways). In the Remake I like how the writers went all in on the Cult Leader motif for Saddler. Even though the Plagas are more Curse than Blessing Saddler believes with his entire being they are a gift from God (hence why he looked so offended when Leon removed his Plaga). Honestly, he's arguably even more terrifying in Remake because he plays the Cult Leader persona completely straight and the looming horror that through the Plagas, he is ALWAYS watching you. Osmund Saddler, same character, 2 completely different takes.

He was done so well in the remake of RE4 and his story is so tragic with his connection to the creation of Nemesis and the his tragic childhood.
You know part of me was thinking that saddler never existed in the remake and that the final boss against saddler would be entirely in Leon's head as the plaga was being removed
Since this villain was a cult leader, I think it would be good to reference the cult in Sally Face called the devourers of god. I can’t explain any of it but I think it would make a great deconstruction of villainy video, and generally you talking about the game I’m general (especially it’s characters) would be awesome, another game with a great villain is Undertale (Flowey/Asriel), the characters in that game are amazing too which would make some amazing videos tbh
My favorite line in the remake is when you pull off a finishing kick. Leon says, "Sorry, must've slipped" he has funny one liners which is why I loved evil dead & Bruce Campbell as well
To this day I’ve hear people say Saddler is unrealistic because he could’ve just killed Leon in so many instances. The point is that he was essentially just stalling. Since Leon and Ashley are already infected, Saddler thinks he won. Besides, returning Ashley with Leon would make more sense and be less suspicious than just sending her back

I think the line "speaker for our lord" is quite key. That's what I think he views himself as, the mouth of the Plagas. His merging of his mind with the parasite has made him think that his will is what the plagas wants, and he is only a vessel for that message. Strikes me as a bit of cognitive dissonance to explain the fact that the motivation is also power.
I know there wasn't facial mocap. And some folks have said he looks like Isao Katsuragi. But from what I've seen. He has more of a Ralph Fiennes a'la Voldemort with a nose. His facial expressions and head movements, the way he walks, all gives me that Vibe.
The plagas is a lot more chilling and creepy in this game. Great video
In the Original RE4, the Plagas takes after its host, which makes Saddler hesitant to just give the dominant strain to anyone. He needs to choose people loyal enough to him to be infected else the Plagas might rebel against him.

He’s a very interesting villain with the way he does things with the parasite like his ancestors. They really pushed the cult things in re4 remake and I’m fine with that. Also I think he was in control of the plaga but was corrupted in the sense of wanting control. Maybe he’s in control to an extent.

I STRONGLY disagree with the idea that Saddler wandering in unannounced is a case of bad writing: He's very confident in himself, and while up to that point he does seem very powerful only through his influence, then showing up without seeming to care about how the two of them have so far carved their way through his minions shows he (at least thinks he) is so far above them in capability he not only doesn't care about any threat they pose, he probably can't care. Then taking a bullet to the head without more than a simple flinch proves that he isn't some weak, easy to defeat commander, but another creature of equal or greater threat than what's come before. Coupled with that is that he can also make sure neither of them could face them simply through mental domination at that point.
There's no need to be bombastic or overt on his part, and his chillingly calm attitude is what makes him a genuinely terrifying threat. He's like a talkative, religious Michael Myers: Implacable and unstoppable.

I can't believe how many times during the game and this video I kept hearing/reading "Adam Sandler" Instead of Saddler.
Also i think he and the parasite actually fully become one during the fight. You can hear him literally say he is giving up all his humanity, what little their was anyway, to become a god everlasting, after that he doesn't say a single word afterwards, just growling and parasitic noises.
Just listen to him during the fight.
Actually that "growlin" is him mutterin ganado lines like "to live is to die" or "blood blood blood !",which goes to show tht the fallen ganados are still connected to saddler and hivemind even after thy were reduced to nothin but black goo,and the whole saddler losin all humanity
Unlike krauser,ramon,Mendez,they all retain a part of their human form,mostly their faces,yet saddler legit is nothin but tentacles,u can see it on his model if u look down u see his torn robes but nothin human beneath,not even a hand or a foot

Saddler is either an Anglo Saxon or German name in origin, if his origin is truly in Spain then it likely goes back at least 1000 years or maybe more recently from the German sphere of Europe; depending on whatever origin it comes from.
I thought given the dates that it might be Dutch, given that the Netherlands were ruled by Spain for so long.
To be fair the Habsburgs or at least a Line of them became the Monarchs of Spain by the 16th century and its possible that somehow Nobility of German Origin established themselves in the 15th.
@@EmperorPylades the Sadlers in lore appears in the 15th Century so before the Habsburg takeover and possibly even before the Union of Castile and Aragon. (Yes in the lore its possible that Los Illuminatos is possibly older than its country of origin)
His line about sinners being those most in need of forgiveness is something that gets to me.
So often you see religious nut jobs in popular media who use their belief as an excuse to do whatever evil bullshit they want.
Now, Saddler does do that too, don't get me wrong. But there are *very few* religious villains who are willing to forgive the protagonist. It just continues to hammer in the idea that Saddler truly believes what he preaches.

Personally i think that its not him talking and that it’s the nature of the plagas talking through him and making him think its his own decisions, similar to how the real life “zombie” fungus works.
Also very similar to how the mold works in RE7 & RE8.
So, in short, he could have been a normal person before stumbling upon the Plagas, hence why he kept a machine to kill the parasite without harming the host.
Makes a lot more sense to me. 😎
@@Archon3960 yea maybe in the original, buuut in the remake luis had created that machine to remove it from himself. Hence why saddler didnt know about it, and didn’t know how leon took out the plagas

To be fair, he himself has been indoctrinated to believe in the Plagas since his entire family has been involved with the parasite for generations. It could be the Plagas, it could also be entirely him. He was born with the belief for the Plagas' apparent 'divine' powers, so there is no difference here really.
