This is my favourite Doctor Who scene of all time. The Doctor releases 900 years of bottled-up anger and frustration, only to realise he's directed it at one of his most loyal friends. And then those 3 words - "Live too long."

That “Ok right then, I will” when Wilf says to leave him is an underrated moment here.
That mixture of anger and biting sarcasm. The Doctor already knows what he’s gonna do. He knows he can’t live with himself if he just left Wilf there. It goes against everything he stands for.
And so he melts down. Because he already knows he’s dead, and it just feels unfair that he has to go. It’s a beautiful scene

Yeah, he knew he was dead with the 4 knocks. He saw Wilf running into the chamber, even has a brief "No, Wilf" that's too late, but he's dealing with the Time Lords. Then Gallifrey is gone, he's still there, and he has that brief moment of relief.....then 4 knocks reminding him of what he saw Wilf do, and he already knows that he's going to go into that chamber to save Wilf. Everything else is just exposition for Wilf's sake (and ours).

    • @marcus14659
      @marcus14659 3 года назад +28

Not to mention he has been dealing with a crisis of his identity. He sees himself as a monster and at the time, unlike the doctor. It all culminated in his decision to save wilf. He proved to himself that he was the doctor, flaws and all. I think one of the reasons he was so afraid to die was the fact he would just become memories. And memories of timelord victorious was terrifying.

This is truly the moment when Ten realizes that he has to regenerate this time. There isn't any second chance, no cut off hand to siphon any remaining regeneration energy into, no meta-crisis Doctor to create. He is forced to realize that he has no split-second escape by someone else taking his place. This scene is also a wonderful example of David Tennant's extraordinary acting skills; you can see the grief and anger at himself when he know the only way Wilfred can live is if Ten takes his place.

This and The Family of Blood are among some of my favorite 10-era episodes. I love when shows give a character some kind of excuse to be out-of-character, like in a typical body-swap episode, because it gives the actor a chance to really show their talent. The best actors are able to fluently play the role of a wide variety of characters, and in Family of Blood, David really sold what it was to be so much more human - even considering how human 10 was in comparison to other Doctors. The life of "John Smith" there is a perfect argument against people who think 10 was too human.

You can definitely sympathize with the Doctor here. He's saved the planet countless times, bettered the lives of millions, and what does he get for it? He's hunted by everyone, hated and feared, forced to watch the people he loves die, or leave him, or lost. Everyone he can connect with fades away, while he dies over and over with no end to it.

It’s not even because it works because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it’s right! Because it’s decent! And above all it’s kind. Just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. But if I stand and fight, some of them might live, maybe not many, maybe not for long. You know what? Maybe there’s no point to any of this, but it’s the best I can do, and I’m gonna do it and I’m going to stand here doing it until it kills me. You’re going to die too, some day. How will that be, have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand and where I stand...is where I fall. Stand with me. Please, these people are terrified. In my opinion the existence of the war doctor and the fact that the tenth doctors regeneration in Journey's End did count, retroactively makes this moment even better. It means that the doctor secretly knows that this is the last time he can ever regenerate. Obviously the time lords ended up giving him new regenerations, but the doctor didn't know that the time lords were still out there at the time.

    • @LotRFanFilm

idawg42xlpwn Very good observation! One thing I noted was that, given that your statement is true, the Doctor thought "the Valeyard" was coming next in his cycle, as he was told the Valeyard would come between his 12th and final incarnations. I like to think his bottled up anger, his "Time Lord Victorious," all of it is his rage in fighting his dark side, and slowly losing. So when he finally says "I don't want to go," it's far less about his actual vanity, and a lot more about what he thinks he's about to become.

It fits especially well when you realize that he was on his 12th regeneration, so from now on he would be mortal, and this regeneration only got to live for under a decade. 10's whole story, of the trials and tribulations of healing (he's more healed than 9, but relapses are still bound to happen), and the fragility of bonds...it's really quite tragic.

Smith's Doctor (11) claims to be 907 almost as soon as he has regenerated
We hear 10 say that he's 903 years old in voyage of the damned and 906 in the End of Time
My headcanon is anytime he regenerates, that becomes his "new birthday"
So if the Doctor was 906 years and 100 days old when 10 regenerated, he immediately called himself 907
If 9 lived past 901 (claimed to be 900, could have rounded it) then he called himself 902 as soon as he regenerated, and 10's adventures with Rose take a year, give or take, and he ages to 903 in time for voyage of the damned
907-902 is exactly 5 years, but I suspect it was 4 years "and some more"
A half decade, maybe short some months
      And then Smith had:
      907
"1200 and something, I think, unless I'm lying. That's how old I am I don't know if I'm lying about my age"
      And
      2000
      2000 - 907 is 1093 years
11 was alive longer than his previous incarnations starting at whenever he started over (he was in the thousands in Old Who too, he likely restarted with the Time War)

He cheated death, escaped Rassilon, saved the Earth, he really did it, he beat the odds. He gets his happy ending and lives for much longer. There's a cheerful tune in the background while he goes through this emotional and uplifting scene, following by the 4 knocks from the prophecy coming from Wilf and INSTANTLY the music takes a twisted sickening turn as his face turns to stone. It's such an absolute punch in the gut. Very powerful.

People criticize 10's era for making the Doctor too much of a "teenie bopper" pretty boy - mostly fans of the classic series who were used to much older, less emotional actors. People think 10 was too vain, too romantic and too human. Well to those people, I poop on, for they fail to realize that these qualities unique to 10 are what makes him such a remarkable character - even if moments like this could be thought of as "out of character" for what the Doctor's "permanent personality" is supposed to be. Personally, I feel that the notion of judging any incarnation of the Doctor is unfair and stupid because it amounts to nothing more than someone clinging to the personalities of the individual Doctors they love rather than appreciating what some of the different ones are like.
The Doctor - or all timelords really - only have very basic guidelines they have to live by to still be loyal to their name. The Doctor, as long as he uses that name, will always be our protagonist because one way or another he's always a hero, even when it doesn't seem like it, and even when he himself thinks he's not. David Tennant's Doctor was very unique for putting so much weight and care into his own generation and "life" rather than feeling content knowing that he could still regenerate, and I at least understand why some people think this is such a flaw in the writing. But to me, the surprisingly strong human emotions he goes through have much more depth than I think many realize. I feel a character like him had to be done at least once, for several reasons - and I even have a few theories as to why it makes sense as a form of progression for the character as a whole - the "meta" Doctor if you will.
In this generation (of viewers) we were introduced to Christopher Eccleston playing the role of 9, who ultimately was like a more rude and intellectual version of the 4th doctor. He was spectacular in his own right for feeling so ominous and mysterious, and alien. At the same time, 9 managed to show a great deal of emotion in his own, repressed way - especially in his guilt. He was still fun-loving however. Then we got 10, who was much more spirited, much more into the adventure. Because of how dark and mysterious 9 was, and because of how soon his era ended, 10 needed to be a young breath of fresh air - a character to be more appealing to a wide audience so viewers would feel more comfortable with the show. He was made to draw in new fans after 9 briefly satisfied old fans with a much more level-headed character. And to do that, they had to make him seem more human. David was a brilliant actor though, and with a few well written episodes, somehow the show still managed to make you really feel like the guy was hundreds of years old on the inside, despite such a young boy-band face.
10 also had other reasons for being so much more human though, much less shallow and more purposeful reasons. His drama imo was stronger than any era we've seen since because of how easy it is to put ourselves into his shoes. In this scene, you really can feel so much for him as he comes to terms with ending his current generation, and there was a LOT of foreshadowing that came before this as his sense of self-preservation kicked in. No one really wants to die, after all. And even if you do feel like you do, no one really knows what happens afterwards or what it feels like. What made this scene ever better was just a short, simple 3 minute long scene before at the diner where he explained what it feels like for him. "Even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am just dies. Some new man just goes sauntering away, ...and I'm dead."
Even if you still think him caring so much about "dying" wasn't worth it considering how content the Doctor is usually supposed to feel, you could also look at it this way. 11 was technically supposed to be his last regeneration, and he knew this. He knew his days were coming to an end, or at least he believed so. He knew that his next regeneration was supposed to be his last. This in an abstract kind of way was a metaphor for the feelings of anxiety we feel when we reach the age of about 50 or so - the fear that there isn't much time left. 10 is reluctant to give himself up because that means facing his "11th" generation, which is essentially like facing "real" death to him - permanent death. He knew that eventually, he would have to go to Trenzalor.
Even 11, as content as he was, was reluctant to think about it. So here, he was so frustrated because to him at this very moment after surviving all the chaos here he came to a realization that it really was "all for nothing" or at least he felt that way, because he was basically going to die anyway. Surviving this episode just meant he'd prolong the inevitable. When it all really came down to it, being so actually close to what could have been his actual permanent death, after ALL of these years, this is where he vents his emotional frustration. The emotions he secretly bottles up inside while staying strong on the outside, the unavoidable instinct, the spite and the discouragement of his own fate; all of this is what we see in this little bit of the Doctor's "constant" inner-essence or character. You could think of the entirety of 10 as a single little thought or feeling inside the ominous timelord's semi-permanent existence just as we all have that little voice in our head that seems out of character for us - something we repress, intentionally or unintentionally. This is what happens when you repress something too long.

The true predicament of this scene is that no matter what choice he makes, the doctor dies. He saves Wilf, he dies of radiation. He leaves Wilf, the idea of the the Doctor dies and is replaced with the time lord victorious. In the end he realizes this and the time lord victorious decides to do the thing the doctor should always do. Save a life even at the cost of his own. This is just one of several messages to be pulled from this scene alone and that is why its so beautiful. Good job Tennant and Davies.

Just compare this to the latest Doctor using her companions as literal warriors and putting them in harm's way.
    My Doctor is dead.

let me guess! No one even remembers those scenarios, as if she did nothing wrong, while same people call 10th only emotional outbursts as being dark😒😒😒

People have a go at 10 for getting angry. But imagine spending 100s of years trying to do the right thing and saving people and all the universe gives back is loss, heartbreak and death everytime

Yep he was so alone near the end especially after what happened with Donna. You can see it in his last moments with rose as the last person he visits.

one detail you forgot, he didn't actually got to that 100s of years you're talking about. he didn't even lived long enough to be a decade old and literally never got a break

To be fair, as amazing as Tennant's performance was in this, both Smith and Tennant were marvellous Doctors, with Smith getting his own share of great performances (while it's far from my favourite ep, the speech in The Rings of Akhaten springs to mind). All of the Doctors have been great, in fact. Prefer Capaldi to both of them, myself, but they've all been amazing. (Even Colin Baker. That guy was MASSIVELY underrated.)

Agree. And it's not fair to compare, considering David had a better showrunner to work with.

Esseban Well, to me, both showrunners seemed to have their highs and lows. RTD had great episodes, both written by himself and other writers, but his era definitely wasn't perfect. The Slitheen eps, Rose in series 2 arguably lacking a lot of the depth she had in 1, and having the cop-out regeneration in Journey's End weren't exactly the best decisions. Not that Moffat's perfect, particularly series 7 and 8, which seemed to lack a lot of focus, but we've still got great eps like A Good Man Goes to War, Day of the Doctor and Heaven Sent with his showrunning. I am looking forward to a new showrunner, though.

Yeah, Moffat did good stuff as well, but I never agreed with his 'big picture' decisions, like chosing Jenna Coleman as companion, and have the Doctor age so much between episodes.

Esseban Agreed on Clara's story, but I actually loved that the Doctor aged a lot between eps, just like in the classic series, like how Six stated how he was over 900 and Seven was 953 (never liked that RTD decided to ignore that and reset it to 900 with Nine. Made no sense to me, really). To me, the countless more stories and adventures we don't know about the Doctor are just as important as the ones we do watch.

That anger and grief is so pure and visceral and burning with emotion. I _know_ that anger. I _know_ that grief. *IT'S NOT FAIR!*
You try to do everything good, everything right, and _that's_ your reward. To die ingloriously, just so save on poor old innocent bumbling man. But you'll do it, because that's who you are.
