I don’t know if you know this, but originally, the Killer was written for Alain Delon and happening in Paris, after John’s honeymoon, he came up with the idea. Of course back then he was nobody and Delon rejected to do it…..now, it is very clear that John Woo doesn’t deliver when he’s corseted to the Hollywood rules. He made 3 excellent films in the US just because Paramount picture gave him care Blanche to whatever he wanted to do, until his fight with Tom Cruise. After that he couldn’t deliver a single decent film. Spielberg produced a couple of his films and they went south because he is not used to have limits. Independent films are made with the freedom of the director being the boss. Here in LA, the producer owns the film and if you fail the schedule, you’re fired. Also, John doesn’t like to work with a locked script. He likes to ad lib and improvise as he goes. The best scenes of his films, including MI:2 where improvised on the set. Now, this version of the Killer is the opposite. A poor script, Universal Studios calling the shots, and if you are from the industry, you can tell simple things like, why they shot the final shootout in daylight??? Originally was shot at night, with artificial rain and during 40 days. Now, it took 3 days to remake (air destroy) the same scene…..I can go on forever, but I think John is enjoying his retirement doing what he loves, and like he said many times, I already proved what I can’t do. I don’t need to do it again……
Frenchman here. You suggesting that Omar Sy can act is hilarious. :D The "good" thing about him is that he makes his costars look like complete acting geniuses... this time, Nathalie Emmanuel, who does a fine job anyway.
The Killer is my fav HK John Woo film and Face/Off is my fav US film, but the tea house shootout in Hardboiled is my fav action scene. I was able to get several of his HK films on DVD when Blockbuster Video went out of business.
The movie honestly wasn't that bad, I enjoyed the characters (mostly Zee and Sey) and they were enough to keep me enjoying the rest of the film. The action like you said was a complete miss for me though. I never felt like I wanted the film to end and was happy with the structure and some of the jokes.
The story is a bit too black or white for my taste, Woo wanted to make his Deer Hunter but he was too ambitious. His best work, imo, is either The Killer or Hard Boiled.
I prefer John Woo’s Hong Kong films to his American films. I hate it when Hollywood remakes Hong Kong Cinema so maybe this is a happy compromise because it’s John Woo remaking his classics…. But I would prefer another epic like *Red Cliff*
This movie was utterly shockingly bad. I mean what a fall from grace for John Woo. Laughably bad acting, script and for a man who redefined how action was shot for more than a decade, it really is sad to see as the action scenes are just poor.

His best film is without a question “A bullet in the head”…..

This movie is good.😃😃
Just because John woo directed it doesn’t mean he gets a pass. A bad film is a bad film and this is a bad film.
