Great video. Love your choices! I haven’t heard Love and Lonliness” in over 40 years. It got some minor airplay here in the US in 1980 then disappeared. Thanks so much for reminding of this gem! Also love the shout out to World Party. Karl Wallinger is one of my favorite artists. May he rest in peace. Your tree looks beautiful!
Hey James! Hope you’re doing well Sir! I stop in occasionally to see how your doing and you are still releasing amazing content Man we’ve been at this for awhile now huh? Great choice with Bohemian Rhapsody! One of the most beloved songs in the history of music. Period. I will have to respectfully disagree with the statement of Wayne’s World ruining BR I think it did the exact opposite by introducing the song to a whole new younger generation of music lovers. And that scene could not have been done any better with any other song! Classic! Love that you included Ringo’s album as well I’m a big Ringo fan Coolest Beatle ever! Man so glad to see The Police-Synchronicity making the cut! King of Pain is an absolute treasure! Beautifully written! Midnight Cowboy! Wow! What an amazing film! And the music is so fitting! Great TAG video James! Even more great to see you again! Happy Hollidays! Peace ✌️👽
Hey Brian, great to hear from you. Totally take your point about Wayne's World. Btw, if you get chance have a quick look at a video I did a couple weeks back called 'Recent Spins - and a Trippy Light'. I thought of you when I made that one, and I think you'll like the effect! Catch up with you soon.
Excellent sad bastard fare. Well done on deciding to read out the sad bastard lyrics. I wish I'd thought of that. Mind you, many of my choices were down to their mopey sound rather than lyrics.
Can’t wait to watch this! Just subbed to the channel and thank you so much for subbing to The Vinyl Sanctuary - sincerely appreciated! 🙏 Best wishes, Christian
Well James, you just made me sad, way to go, didn’t think anyone could do this. Jon made a fun tag that was perfect from him. I kept singing in my head the Travis song- Why Does It Always Rain On Me!
“Midnight Cowboy” great choice! Yes, one of the all time heartbreaking movie endings.. I had not had you pegged as a Dave Dudley fan, king of the truck driving genre, didn’t know that he was known in the UK. Enjoyed the video. - Thomas Calden
Cheers Tom. I'm not sure I'm a Dave Dudley 'fan' exactly - I found these two records at different charity shops over the years, and I do quite enjoy them.
Hey again James, Neat idea by Jon and for a good cause here. I like that Squeeze cover on the CD. Wow, King of Pain...well that's what I get for not paying attention to lyrics...For 40 years I'd always heard it as an upbeat song, ha! Thanks for sharing this. -Carm
Hi Carm...King of Pain as a happy song, well that's one interpretation! The Squeeze cover is fun with them sitting in the pot. At the time they said the idea of it was they'd just been signed to Warner Brothers, and they felt they were going to truly flower on the new label. In the event they got booted off almost as soon as the album came out!
Hi James. Depressingly good video on the most positive manner. Some absolute tear jerkers in there along with some unexpected choices. Really great delivery which is such a strong positive on your channel. Are you a NW England guy, I’m trying to place the accent. I’m from the Potteries (Stoke if you didn’t know) as you can probably tell from my accent
Hi, I'm from north Wales would you believe, though I haven't lived there consistently since 1989. I lived in West Yorkshire for ten years and have been in Lancaster since the early 2000s. Thanks for the nice feedback!
Fantastic video James 😀🍿🎸🎶 Squeeze are a really cool band; love the ‘Play’ album; pretty underrated 😊 ‘Midnight Cowboy’ is a really good film; that ending is rather sad indeed 😢 ‘Happy When It Rains’ is a Jesus & Mary Chain song aswell; great single from ‘Darklands’ album 😎🎸 ‘King Of Pain’ is a good Police single; World Party are a fantastic band; love their first 3 albums 😊 Another great video James; keep up the brilliant work as ever 🙌
Hi James, very enjoyable and at the same time kind of sad video! There is something about lyrics recited with a British accent that really makes it classy, at least from an American perspective. take care, Elliott
You may well convince me to like Bohemian Rhapsody! I love the Motors and that song is terrific. Cool choice with the Police. Some of your picks are new to me. Great response 👍
Hey Brian, excellent to know you're a Motors fan. If you're interested I did a whole video on their career a few years back. Actually it was a retrospective on their songwriter Andy McMaster, the guy that sang Airport. As a result of that I actually ended up in touch with him, briefly! The wonders of RUclips.
Cheers for the tag James..?? .i'm going to be brutally honest and say i haven't watched any responses whatsoever ( apart from this one, obviously).. so i appreciate you giving it some context..i guess i will go back and watch Johns' OG video too. Bo Rap is of course grossly overplayed, which is a pity, because it's one of the most accomplished recorded songs ever..i never play it now. Great choice with King of Pain..Sting had a knack of veiling melancholy themes with great pop sensibility. Love World Party..you're right, i never really think of his songs as sad or downbeat. Nice twist on the Smiths question..i guess Squeeze have done quite a few sad, confessional songs ' Up The Junction ' comes to mind too. i need to listen to that 3rd Motors album, because the second album is of course wonderful. I love the Midnight Cowboy Soundtrack and the Elephant's Memory song is my favourite..very lycergic and dreamy. I'll see if i can reply to this by the weekend.
I never thought this would get this many responses. I expected maybe like 2 or 3 people to do it. So, thanks so much for playing along, James. A great response. Love all the lyrical readings. I remember when we discussed possibly doing a joint video on sad music, and you mentioned Tindersticks. I had never given them any attention up to that point and really enjoyed a couple of their earlier albums. Someone mentioned on my channel that their latest album is supposed to be really good. Enjoyed this. Cheers! ✌🏻
Thanks Jon, this was good fun and a really nice idea. I meant to contact you a while back to let you know that our Spoon video suddenly started gathering some interest a while back. I haven't checked on it recently but last time I looked it was doing pretty well. Hoping to include a Spoon song in the top 50 favourite US songs series I'm wheeling out at the moment. Compliments of the season!
We've had to switch over to artificial trees as well in recent years, my wife has some allergy issues with real ones. A whole generation discovered Bohemian Rhapsody through that iconic scene in Wayne's World, for better or worse...I watched that film again several months back, for the first time in decades! It's like something from another century now - which in fact it is, of course. Lol at the noise, gave me a start, I was listening with headphones and thought the dishwasher was making some terrible racket. Finally watched Midnight Cowboy a while back as well, yes bit of a downer ending for sure! Seems like there are a lot more sad songs than happy ones, makes for better lyrical grist I suppose. Cheers James!
We only had a real tree once, when I was a kid, and it didn't end well. I'm allergic to nuts so maybe there's a link there with the pine cones? I totally get that a whole generation discovered 'Bo-Rhap' via Wayne's World...I guess that's a good thing. These days Queen's music turns up in TV commercials a lot - the latest is the song 'Flash' being used to advertise Flash power-mops. Cheers Doug!
Sad songs...Amy Winehouse/ ..Back to Black..("You go back to her/and I go back to black") John Lennon/Mother(Mother don't go/daddy come home)..song 👉Rolling Saddest song by a popular band..Rolling Stones.. Memory Motel ..........(when Hannah left)👉"I hit the bottle/and I hit the sack..and cried."
What?! You hate the smiths?! Travesty!! Not really into country myself, apart from the great Johnny Cash it’s full of boring dullards, and songs about a woman “picking a fine time” to leave the guy alone with the kids! The Tindersticks on the other hand I absolutely love! The first and second self titled albums are amonst the best of the 90’s in my opinion! Especially the disturbing “my sister” on the second one! Which is read by Stuart like a monologue done in a film noir sort of way! Which is why they lend themselves so well to doing soundtracks! Great video by the way! But the tag title is a bit unflattering though!!!!
Being allergic to Christmas trees is the definition of a sad bastard.
I'm allergic to quite a lot of things. Nuts is a big one.
@@jamesgriffithsmusic You're just a sad Tag Hag James. Own it.

Pleased to remind you about Love and Loneliness! My son decorated the Christmas tree, he did a good job this year.
Hey James! Hope you’re doing well Sir! I stop in occasionally to see how your doing and you are still releasing amazing content Man we’ve been at this for awhile now huh?

Thanks Hedley. The reason I read out the lyrics is because I enjoyed it when Vinyl Richie did it on his response.
Can’t wait to watch this! Just subbed to the channel and thank you so much for subbing to The Vinyl Sanctuary - sincerely appreciated! 🙏

Christian
No worries, Christian - and thank you!!
Well James, you just made me sad, way to go, didn’t think anyone could do this. Jon made a fun tag that was perfect from him. I kept singing in my head the Travis song- Why Does It Always Rain On Me!
Sorry Steve! I tried to do it in a happy way but I obviously failed. I hope you have recovered from watching the video.
“Midnight Cowboy” great choice! Yes, one of the all time heartbreaking movie endings.. I had not had you pegged as a Dave Dudley fan, king of the truck driving genre, didn’t know that he was known in the UK. Enjoyed the video.

Cheers Tom. I'm not sure I'm a Dave Dudley 'fan' exactly - I found these two records at different charity shops over the years, and I do quite enjoy them.
Photograph is the perfect sad song that plays like a party song.
Love and loneliness one of my favourite tracks of all time. Love the motors. This song was so good 👏
So right George.

Fantastic video James 😀🍿🎸🎶 Squeeze are a really cool band; love the ‘Play’ album; pretty underrated 😊 ‘Midnight Cowboy’ is a really good film; that ending is rather sad indeed 😢

Thanks Sam. I used to have 'Darklands' on vinyl, but when it went missing somewhere down the line!
Hi James, very enjoyable and at the same time kind of sad video! There is something about lyrics recited with a British accent that really makes it classy, at least from an American perspective. take care, Elliott
Thanks Elliott, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video James, full of Christmas cheer 😊
Thanks Gary. Will message soon. Hope you're doing OK.

Nice tree !
Can't beat an artificial Xmas tree!
Though not written by a Beatle "Photograph" is the most Beataley single released by any Beatle post breakup.
True...a better song than some of what got onto Abbey Road in my opinion.
Cheers for the tag James..?? .i'm going to be brutally honest and say i haven't watched any responses whatsoever ( apart from this one, obviously).. so i appreciate you giving it some context..i guess i will go back and watch Johns' OG video too.

I never thought this would get this many responses. I expected maybe like 2 or 3 people to do it. So, thanks so much for playing along, James. A great response. Love all the lyrical readings. Great vid! Presumably the film was Wayne's World, rather than the biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'😂
Yes! Just couldn't think of it though. To be honest I've tried to block it out.
Sad songs...Amy Winehouse/ ..Back to Black..("You go back to her/and I go back to black")
John Lennon/Mother(Mother don't go/daddy come home)..song 👉Rolling
Saddest song by a popular band..Rolling Stones.. Memory Motel
..........(when Hannah left)👉"I hit the bottle/and I hit the sack..and cried."
Good suggestions. I should have included 'Mother'. I thought of 'Fool to Cry' for the Stones.
My other takeaway from this vid was..allergic to Xmas trees! At least it's season specific and not cats or peanuts 😅
I am allergic to nuts! A little bit allergic to cats and dogs too, though we have both.
I'm not the greatest ELO fan,Mr Blue Sky has been played to death but my fave by them is The Diary Of Horace Wimp which I have on 7" single 👍👍👍
Fair play Nick...I really like it sometimes, and I loved it as a kid. Always wondered why he left out 'Saturday' during the fadeout though.
The Diary Of Horace Wimp was the first 7" single that I ever bought after hearing it sitting in the barber's chair.
The Diary of Horace Crimp?
Overplayed, first in mind: without you by Nilsson
Very true.

I didn't say I hate The Smiths, I said 'I don't mind the Smiths!'. I need to check out the other Tindersticks records. Think I heard Curtains.
