I'm glad that you liked Honey Harper's album. If we're talking about sad music, I think about Tori Amos. Especially her "Boys for Pele" ( oh God, I adore "Hey jupiter") and "Abnormally attracted to sin" (that piano bridge at the end of "Lady in blue").
Thanks, Greg. I love a good piano piece, I make these playlists I call "keys to a good mix" that are collections of songs that are just really setoff by the piano parts, I think I will have to make a new one with "Lady in Blue." :)
Would definitely suggest Julien Baker's entire Turn Out The Lights album. As Tall As Lions writes some sad jams- my favorite being, Maybe I'm Just Tired. Also, a band called Margot and the Nuclear So and So's. Talking in Code is one of my favorite songs.
I absolutely adore As Tall As Lions and have their two major releases on LP, was also fortunate enough to see them three times during their heyday; and I even have a tattoo I got that is inspired by their lyrics "it's better to die on your feet than live down on your knees." Some Margot tracks have come through the radar for me -I use to download all of these Blalock's Indie Rock Playlists (BIRP) [so much great music!] and I always liked what I heard. The Julien Baker one though, I think I may have seen on Matador once upon a time while digging around their site, but never have listened, I am going to have to change that. Thanks, Stephanie!
Nice list!! I would recommend the following sad bastard albums, & it’d be great to hear your thoughts on any of these: -Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You (1983) -Eels - Electro Shock Blues (1998) -Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me (2017)
Right out the gate with Daniel Johnston! I use to jam the Eels about a decade ago, so can get down there for sure, but Mount Eerie is a new one. Going to have to look them up! Thank you.
are you familiar with Karen Dalton? if not i would highly recommend her album It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best. one of my all time sad bastard music albums.
hope you enjoy it.Bob Dylan was quoted saying of Karen Dalton “my favorite singer”.“Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday’s and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed and went all the way with it,” Dylan wrote in Chronicles, Volume 1. her life story was extremely sad & depressing.
