Nice message at the end. I must add that it is very cool that you quote a George Jones song and seamlessly into a Black Flag song. Vinyl Richie is truly one of a kind.
Phases and Stages…such a good choice. It crossed my mind to use it as well. Never realized how dark/sad “How Soon Is Now” is. Damn. The George Jones pick is so sad. Tragic. Loved your story at the end too.
Effing great video, Richie! I knew this would be good. That commotion at the end was just enough levity to recover. I need to get that Black Flag record.

He makes Charlie Rich sound like KC & The Sunshine Band. That Mozzer track is his greatest Good call on 'Don't Worry Be Happy' 😂
If you want sad bastard music grab some country music , you can’t go wrong. Perfect Day has been used on commercials in a positive lite but that is one dark song. I cracked up when Jon came out with this, perfect for him. Well done with your response and dramatic readings!
How Soon Is Now still sends a chill down my spine just like it did when I first heard it. What a great track. Ol’ Waylon love it! More great content from VR! 👍
Eleanor Rigby really is a sad story, but the strings and cinematic feel kinda soften the loneliness a bit…great selection. The hairdresser story is a nice message for the holidays…makes me miss the old home town.
The ad before your video reminded me that I'm a man, not a kangaroo. That makes me really sad and is a good lead in to your tag response. Excellent reading of "How Soon is Now". I believe that is exactly how Morrissey would hear it in his head while he wrote it. No one is more depressing than George Jones....except when my brother in law sings a George Jones song. Not that he sings depressingly, but it is depressing to know that George Jones is the only artist he will listen to.
What incredible readings. I was snapping my fingers like some pretentious beatnik. I always love how you add your prompts. We’ll see if Sir James responds.
What constitutes a "sad bastard" album? "Transformer" is one of the best rock 'n' roll ever created. "Perfect Day" is arguably his most fantastic song. You understand poetry and its rhythms. That's a great Willie record. This is amazing! Let's put out hard copies of smoothed voiced people reading great rock songs! Ohh&hhhhh duuuuude . . . "Eleanor Rigby" is my favorite Beatles song. Slam brotha slam! George Jones and Johnny Cash fans will physically fight over those two artists. Jones' got that one. Speak your heart and it'll never fail you. (Except once) Kippis!

Good lyrical interpretations Rich. Like that Black Flag selection. There are so many great sad bastard covers, wish I thought of that. None better than Bill Fay's Time of the Last Persecution.
I would have picked Lou's Sad Song, from the Berlin LP, but Perfect Day is a good choice. Morrisey is King of the Sad Bastards, and How Soon Is Now really punches you in the gut with the line "So you go home, you cry, and you want to die" The Cure also had some sad tunes, especially on their album Pornography.😮💨😒😪

And I'm really depressed right now.
Paul has wrote so many shit songs , but so many great ones, too. I agree. And Eleanor Rigby is an awesome goth-adjacent song. Great video. I was laughing out loud at the “How Soon is Now” part. Love the Smiths.

Oh man! You started strong with a dead clown. Nothing sadder than a dead clown. I have to pick you up on your spiky remark about Tom Waits. Not all of his albums are sad, he's not some one trick pony. Tom Waits covers the whole spectrum of sad songs. George Jones may be more of a one trick pony in that regard. Nonetheless, they are both sad bastards.

Have you ever listened to Tom Waits. He’s the perfect example of a misunderstood artist. Yes he has sad songs but also many happy ones. I do not consider him a sad bastard, more a funny story teller.
I’m just having a bit of fun. The song A House Where Nobody lives is a favorite of mine. Have you seen Tom Waits on Storytellers. His stories between the songs are just as good as the songs if not better. But in all honesty Tom is a bit of a sad badtard.
