Grew up on a duck club in Arkansas. Learned to call on a PS olt. Old timer helped me some too. Best lessons I got was sitting on a level watching ducks and see how the old boss hen would call in passing ducks. Back then big groups of mallards would be in Arkansas and first of November I’d be able to sit in a blind and call ducks in to the water.. big confidence builder. Public land hunts are way different and way harder due to pressure.

Hi. What helped me to understand calling ducks was flying an rc airplane. Call when you want them to turn. Finishing....is an ancient Chinese secret. Just quack so they have confidence that they're on the right line. I hunt flooded green timber where you HAVE to call them in. I'm serious about the rc airplane thing. It teaches you to pattern fly. In the field you're trying to get ducks to fly your pattern and set up to land easily in the spread. The spacing and timing on calling ducks is identical to landing an rc airplane. Go to a field and watch.
Would be cool to do a hunting series that followed you, and cypress crossing while you hunted through the season, and a hunting series of you and your buddies traveling, scouting and killing birds. Public and or private.

I'm 51 been hunting in the same area 40 years I've been hunting with a friend that's 73 that's been hunting the same spot 55 years and started chewing my ass this season one day because I kept calling the ducks when they came over the boat yea we hunt public ground. . I never have like to quit calling at them It just dosen't sound right but we always call soft and they have all but quit finishing it's about to drive us crazy
I think a good video suggestion would be footage in the field where you're calling various ducks & showing the reactions you're looking for. This video is very good & I plan on watching all of your videos before my first duck hunt this season. One thing that stood out huge was engaging the ducks who react to your call & bring them in. Yes this all is good information I do notice sometimes I can just switch up a call Totally a different duck call from a single Reed to a double reed either way and it would make those birds work so yeah it is tough to break and I'm throwing calls right off of my lanyard and put them right back on so it really is just reading those birds when you're there great advice and switching it up is a big thing I moved twice the other day and it really did help God bless
In five years of hunting, really only 2 1/2 years of trying to call, I can only remember a hand full of times I thought the calling I did pulled in any ducks. This year has been especially tough.

I hunt Washington state we mostly use widgeon calls and mallard drake calls. It's a public salt marsh and it's hunted hard. 4 guys with whistles dose the trick on most ducks.
I always am a less is more. Subtle quacks and feed chatter with a mild come back. I learned do the opposite of what everyone else in the area is doing. They see the same thing time and time again. When they have been hammered for a month straight, gotta break the methods.
Liked the video I agree with you and it’s ok to “over call” I hunt California refuges where calling at ducks is almost frowned upon. I disagree though even on pressured ducks you can still call and be effective

Mr. Strickland if you could describe the technique that is needed to get used to using a Mondo compared to your older style of calls how would that go? I’m still using a double reed beginner call and starting to get more curious on the nicer acrylic calls. I personally do not like the style of calls with larger mouth pieces that require a ton of air to be pushed through to operate it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I love the instructional videos with being more of a beginner.

Great tips! Do you blind call? I will in morning's I don't wait till I hear or see a duck different species early season teal and woodducks then mallards widgeon ect. Many times I've had flocks come in and land out of nowhere. I don't hunt pressured birds like you Mn is a 1st stop out of Canada.
Sometimes we do just call blindly, especially if we are in a area of limited viability and we aren't seeing many ducks. We call it trolling. kinda like in fishing.

Here's one I can't find a good answer to. I hunt on a river where there's not a lot of ducks they comes in groups of twos and threes and they're more often cannot see ducks then can see ducks. Should I be calling when I don't see birds flying?
I'm a newbie... I didnt know any better. Better I started just cold calling sometimes. We hunt a little private 3 acre or so pond. Seems to work. Especially on birds that are behind or below the tree lines. 🤷♂️ Anyone else do this?
I don’t use a long multi-note hail call- also known as a ‘hi ball’ or ‘Main Street’ calling. Sometimes I “power call”... which is an aggressive and repetitive greeting call. Some people interchange the names “greeting call” and “hail call”. I’ve done it before too.
My most important rule. Everyday is a new day watch the ducks. They will tell you what they are in the mood for. On stubborn birds or birds that have circled 4-5 times I have had good luck with very aggressive and loud feed chatter rather than a hail/come back. Also, a quick cadence hail or a long dragging hail will get em to turn and take a look.
You accidentally land flocks that you're not focused on? Happens all the time to me too..I'm working on a pair...and twenty try to land. I blew them out because I was focused on the pair until my group of hunters moaned. Sorry guys it happens all the time.
