Ed, this is solid gold, thanks so much for uploading, wish you had more footage, its impossible to find this kind of behind the scenes anywhere!! One of my favourite shows ever. Im 29 and had never seen a so detailed explanation on how the suits worked, my childhood´s not ruined, Im very happy I found this.
This is ingenious, and it really gives the show a unique aesthetic. CGI is really good today even in TV shows, but it still doesn't look this real. Granted this only looks like real rubber suits, but they are awesome rubber suits.
there something endearing about the 'rubber suits' though. They're real, and there, you can work with and interact more accurately with these animatronic puppets. That aesthetic can't be beat with green screen and stick balls.
From the bottom of my heart and soul, thank you to every single person involved in the production of this show. It’s one of the fondest memories of my childhood
I love watching behind the scenes stuff like this because it really shows how much work goes into something at groundbreaking as the stuff Jim Henson did
We cheated ourselves out of this amazing technology. Imagine what they could achieve today. But NO, as always we preferred quantity over quality and now we're stuck with dozens of CGI movies per year... The number of superhero movies that come out each years makes me sick, what a load of crap...
All practical effects! This show was a piece of art! Nowadays everything is CGI, this makes you appreciate even more, how movies and shows were made back in the day.
I like these videos MUCH more than I liked the show back when it was on TV. The show was always kind of boring, but these behind-the-scenes videos are interesting!
Thank you for posting this video as well as the baby video. I used to love this show. I have a great respect and appreciation for people that did puppetry and maybe shows what they are. There's so much better. With the puppetry than they are at the CGI. It's sad today that now there's no time spent in making a creature come to life. Other than in the computer program. I understand is cheaper. But if you want something to look real. You have to make it real. And that's what this show shows most of all. The realism of a character. Realism of the dinosaurs. And the sex. Not just everything being a green screen. Mcgi. Movies and TV shows like this will purely imagination. And watching you guys behind the scene really shows the amount of fun you had with the work. You guys were hot sweaty. And had breathing issues and everything else and be serious. But still you got a fun and joy you have playing off of each other really shows this video on the baby video. Had really get to see this. Now and I want to show they showed so many bloopers they're not nearly the level of fun then what you guys had there. Thank you for sharing this experience with the world. Maybe one day he will go back to the original movie Magic
Well, thanks to the internet, you can relive this series as many times as you want from beginning to end. My favorite episode from my childhood is called "The Terrible Twos."
Highly doubtful it will ever get a reboot and if it did it’s EVEN more doubtful it will be used with puppets and animatronics. That crap is really expensive, it’s the reason Netflix cancelled the Dark Crystal show after only one season.
This was far more advanced than I thought. While I was watching the show I figured they had to have some sort of camera inside the suit because there is no visible view ports or holes.
I will never understater how somehow back then a Saturday tv show could make those practical effect and have actors literally dressed-up i mech-suites rigs that turned them into Dinosaurs and at the same time actors could move & act, but nowadays they can barely make a Dragonborn Character in D&D movie & show it just for 2 or 3 short scenes when they just sit & not move, while having an insanely high budget. It is like cinema got lazy or it is moving backwards.
I wonder if they can release a remastered version of this show. All the hard work and detail put into it and the only videos you find of it are crappy grainy low resolution.
You know what? this Show is only 25 years old or so, still the Yellowing Tape is like if it were filmed longer that it was... I did enjoy the show, as it was not a bad show at all, still.... I was intrigued by the way they moved the moppets with the robotics of that era.... It was neat!
Not sure if this helps and I know this is an older comment, but it appears as if some of the animatronic heads are on display inside the creature shop.
The talent and effort that went into making costumes and sets back in the day could never be matched in modern TV or movies. Everything's got to be cheap CGI now.
They probably did face models and combined them a sketch of the dinasaur they had in mind. Then started making little changes here and there as they made the final model. Prob simlar to video games that add a little of the voice actor's features to the character model so when it comes to mouth movements it matches the actual actor's speech nuances.
If you can choose between giant 100 pound suits that take hours to put on, or fast and cheap CGI, the choice is fucking obvious. Nevertheless amazing dedication of this crew to make a wonderful dinosaur comedy show :)
Wow, if you see this in 2021 it's like "OMG how could so many people be at the set? WITHOUT COVID MASKS!!!". Now we finally know, what good times we've had...
Wish they being this show back. Ya I know it’s on Disney + now. (As feb 2021) I Grew up on this show and Loved it. With today tech, they could make look so much better. Not that dinosaurs back in 90’s wasn’t Awesome. Would love see them do different family. Roy family would be epic hah. T-Rex was always my fav. Would love see them do all Smart T-Rex family hah.
I keep trying to show this great show to my kids and they don't get it. They don't get the jokes and funny it is. I mean I'm watching it now and catching stuff I didn't when I was a kid like a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Cavemen" poster in Robys room.
Hey Ed, are you still involved in the film industry? I have an Agent and I film movies in NYC and voice in a few videogames. I was hoping we could network?
Christ... so much work for such an underappreciated show.
Waaaay ahead of it's time. This is almost surreal.
You are right.I wish they remaster these series.
This show is the best
It's always funny when I see you all referring to this show as underappreciated, cause here in Brazil, it was a huge success.
@@josie1776 "não é a mamãe" foi um meme antes dos memes existirem
@@josie1776 It was a huge success here in America too. People just throw the term “under appreciated” around a lot honestly.
My dad was a D.A. on this show. I used to visit the set all the time. This brings back memories!

it's amazing. I would kill to be staff on this show. Looks like so much fun, so creative
@@user-sd7qt3hy8l Agreed who the fuck knows
My sister went out with Mack Wilson’s son who plays Earl
I grew up in Brazil watching this show on the 90's. It's so fantastic to see how they made it!
That’s really incredible to think of the reach shows used to have
I was obsessed with this show when I was 9, haha! This is brilliant, I cannot believe the huge size and details of the dinosaurs. Just outstanding!
That was some cutting edge tech for the time!
Yes, it was. I still love this technology more than CGI. I wish they still used it but I know it is more difficult and expensive than CGI.
There's just this charm to this particular kind of older technology.

Glad you like it. I was lucky to have been there and not have the camera ripped from my hands. :-)
I can’t be the only one who’d love to see an exhibit of the props from this show.
I do believe sadly that most of the originals have deteriorated past the reparation point.. :/
This is ingenious, and it really gives the show a unique aesthetic. CGI is really good today even in TV shows, but it still doesn't look this real. Granted this only looks like real rubber suits, but they are awesome rubber suits.

i always loved Roy, he was such a nice guy even being a t-rex
That was high tech on 90's , amazing!
From the bottom of my heart and soul, thank you to every single person involved in the production of this show. It’s one of the fondest memories of my childhood
That's impressive! I've always wondered how the suits worked!!! :) Great!
AGREED!! mind blown on how much was involved as an actor! and wow on two camera monitors! very impressive!!!
I love watching behind the scenes stuff like this because it really shows how much work goes into something at groundbreaking as the stuff Jim Henson did
This is legitimately one of the best TV shows ever made. Been a fan since childhood and still love to rewatch it every now and then.
What an ambitious project this all was, underappreciated show.
We cheated ourselves out of this amazing technology. Imagine what they could achieve today. But NO, as always we preferred quantity over quality and now we're stuck with dozens of CGI movies per year... The number of superhero movies that come out each years makes me sick, what a load of crap...
Right there with you
kevlion Disney outsources their animstronics now
Amen
andres o Agreed.
kevlion A lot of the new animatronics are becoming a mixture between CG and hardware.
Awesome behind-the-scenes footage!
you had to be extremely dedicated to this show to do that every day!!! omg guys thank you for the memories
Wow, I wasn’t expecting to see my eldest son Ben also turn up on this video! Nice one Ed!😂
I’m assuming those were miniature CRT screens? Lots of electronics packed in! Can’t imagine the heat generated in that suit.
These videos are amazing!!! I was obsessed with this show as a 90s baby....really explains a lot!❤
incredible footage, thank you for shooting & sharing
this tv show marked my childhood, i really enjoy and love it so much, i still watch it 2021. and is just an amazing work of art.
All practical effects! This show was a piece of art! Nowadays everything is CGI, this makes you appreciate even more, how movies and shows were made back in the day.
I always loved their house its so huge and beautiful
Nossa sempre fiquei imaginando como seriam as filmagens da série. MUITO TRABALHO, MUITA CRIATIVIDADE, MUITA TECNOLOGIA e TALENTO(Brasil 2021)
Man we had the best shows in the 90s. I feel sorry for today’s kids
Awesome! Imagine how good practical effects and costumes could be with today’s technology!
I mean with how good John Carpenter's The thing looked in the '80s I'm sure they would look utterly amazing today if they were still used.
I like these videos MUCH more than I liked the show back when it was on TV. The show was always kind of boring, but these behind-the-scenes videos are interesting!

It was the best
Oh man, I would have loved to visit the set when I was a kid.
Loved Mr. Maar's work in Return to Oz. Nice to see him in more behind the scenes stuff.
one of my favorite shows, they should bring it back
Highly doubtful it will ever get a reboot and if it did it’s EVEN more doubtful it will be used with puppets and animatronics. That crap is really expensive, it’s the reason Netflix cancelled the Dark Crystal show after only one season.
I like how its a mesh backing under the shirt so he doesn't die of heat as a much
This show needs a reboot.
This was far more advanced than I thought. While I was watching the show I figured they had to have some sort of camera inside the suit because there is no visible view ports or holes.
They actually couldn't see at all, besides the cameras. I forget his name, but the actor who played Earl could only see when the mouth was open
thanks to these wonderful actors I had the best the best childhood
Finish again the show after 28 years! thanks disney+! a masterpiece.
He was my fav character next to Spike!
This is incredibly interesting😃

must have got hotter then hell in that costume under those Hot studio lights.
How I miss this show!
80 90s best childhood ever i miss it so much
Interesting thanks for sharing the special edition of Jim Henson's Dinosaurs.
Imagine getting all dressed up in the suit and then realizing you have to go to the bathroom!
This is the lost episode, where everyone is decapitate lol
As everybody can see the suits look very much big than the tv show.
I loved this show as a kid, and actually just now I'm finding out how SCARY it actually is! :-)

Omg, i miss that times...
Anyone know what became of these suits after the show? I loved this show as a kid.
This is so awesome, will you be posting more footage from the set of "Dinosaurs"?
Sorry. I've uploaded virtually everything I shot that day. There are a couple more on my channel of course.
That's amazing
What ever happened to the suits, would be cool to see them shown off
Mdc 95 they have probably disintegrated by now. The materials they were made of were notorious for decomposition.
Not sure if this helps and I know this is an older comment, but it appears as if some of the animatronic heads are on display inside the creature shop.
Nearly all of them have deteriorated, only the Baby survived.
I couldn’t be hooked up to all of that. I’d have a panic attack.
The final result is way cooler than modern CGI
Ben, you’re one lucky kid!
He was probably right around my age
I like how we all know the 25 dislikes are the super Christians that don't believe in dinosaurs LOL
I always wondered how they did these suits. They must've cost a literal fortune
Una verdadera obra de arte tan menos preciada, actores reales, no como las mierdas de ahora que solo son nombre fancy
The talent and effort that went into making costumes and sets back in the day could never be matched in modern TV or movies. Everything's got to be cheap CGI now.
i wounder how they went to the toliet ?
They took off the suit
what while they was filming wouldnt that have taken long to take off and then put back on again
They always starve themselves before shooting. More convinient AND productive. Just don't tell this to HR though, if she knew...she would FLIP.
It sure looks like they were having a lot of fun in there
How does Roy’s puppeteer actually kind of look like him as a human-
They probably did face models and combined them a sketch of the dinasaur they had in mind. Then started making little changes here and there as they made the final model. Prob simlar to video games that add a little of the voice actor's features to the character model so when it comes to mouth movements it matches the actual actor's speech nuances.
Majestic mullet!!!
los técnicos de esos animatronicos son unos genios!
fantastic !!!!

Isso é incrível!!! Agora que o youtube está me sugerindo os vídeos!!
Roy looks like a dinosaur version of Christopher Meloni.

what wouldn't i give to be on that set
Had no idea of what was involved in making this show
NOT THE MAMA!
That must be hell to work in.
George Lucas' brothers mullet is on point
I swear, everyone on this team did an amazing job on this show.
Everyone here is such a nerd! I bet you guys had a blast even though you probably worked until sunrise most days.
Animatronic suits? Nice.
wow what a fun job
Hey Ed, are you still involved in the film industry? I have an Agent and I film movies in NYC and voice in a few videogames. I was hoping we could network?
0:15 is that lucky Yates’s voice?? I mean he is a puppeteer!
