  • What is white gold? Is it naturally occurring? How do you change the color of gold?
    Dan Moran of Concierge Diamonds Inc in Los Angeles explains white gold.
    White gold does not exist in nature. To make a white gold ring we plate or cover it with a very thin layer of metal called rhodium. Rhodium is a very white, very hard, very brittle metal. That's actually almost as expensive as gold, but we use so little of it that it doesn't matter. We cover that white gold ring in a very thin layer of rhodium to give it that bright white appearance.

    I thought white gold is just alloyed with palladium? I have a white gold wedding ring and it's worn pretty far down and I don't see any yellow showing thru

    • @johnmichael642
      @johnmichael642 4 года назад +4

      it is mixed with nickel or palladium to make the core look white, but the rhodium exterior is a sharper clearer white.

    So white gold is basically rodium plated over gold...wtf

    • @ConciergeDiamonds
      @ConciergeDiamonds  5 лет назад +3

      The only natural color of gold is yellow. If you want a white metal, you can make something in platinum.

      Concierge Diamonds can the rhodium be mixed instead of plated?

    so you're saying that you should just buy Platinum because there's no upkeep and if you're trying to save money by buying white gold you're going to eventually pay the price of platinum because you have to constantly dip it in the roadium? Well now I know to go for platinum.

    Great video! Very simple and clear. I had a bad experience with both steel and silver. In less than a week my fingers got like burnt. There were open wounds where the rings were. Any idea why? Plus, would Platinum or Rodium react like that? Oh yeah my wedding ring is 18K gold and I never had a problem.

    do they ever use a Nickel and Platinum alloy to create an even harder metal and shiny at the same time?
    I have a necklace and it's reacting strongly to magnet
    Could it be Platinum, thanks for the good video

    • @calangel
      @calangel 6 лет назад +2

      Taki Clinton Harness well, the PtCo alloys (950 Platinum, 50 Cobalt) are magnetic. Also, nickel actually doesn't make a very hard alloy with platinum despite being so tough on its own.

    Can white gold can be turned into yellow gold.

    • @ConciergeDiamonds
      @ConciergeDiamonds  5 лет назад +1

      Gold is inherently yellow. What changes is the rhodium plating, so you can plate natural yellow gold to change its appearance.

    • @ConciergeDiamonds
      @ConciergeDiamonds  6 лет назад +2

      Well, you can't set stones in pure gold... it's too soft! This is why we alloy it with other metals.

    White gold wedding ring.
    I'd lose a platinum ring. Besides it's heavier too.

    So 24k is the best gold, eh?
    So the higher the karat, the better?

    • @ConciergeDiamonds
      @ConciergeDiamonds  4 года назад +3

      24K is PURE gold but too soft to set jewelry in. So if you want to wear it, you need to mix it with another metal!
