Hi Patagonia, I just watched the full version of this (it was uploaded for a few hours then removed it seems). As an Australian and someone who cares deeply for our natural environment, a part of me really liked this video. It also made me very homesick, as I now live in Denmark where I moved to work in the wind energy industry. I couldn't help but feel however that the message, whilst well intentioned, misses the mark a little, because yes, grassroots activism can make a big difference, but its not, as Wayne put it "the only answer", and indeed, on its own will fail in the ultimate goal of sustaining great places like the southern coasts of Australia. This was especially apparent as Dave wrote on his surfboard a message against oil production in the Bight(with a pen made from oil based products). In future videos, it would be nice to also show that there are technical solutions to some of these problems, not simply that activism is the only tool we have, and that you can be a surfer and also contribute in ways that aren't only increasing awareness or being an activist. For example, there are people working to introduce sustainable alternatives to oil based products, and to develop technologies that make alternatives cheaper than those they hope to displace. This, in my opinion, whilst less sexy, is likely to have a larger impact in the long term, as in the business world dollars always speak louder than any other argument (unfortunately). Especially in Australia I think we are sometimes guilty of thinking that someone else will provide the technical solutions to our problems, but videos like this could spur people to not only think of activism but also of studying, understanding where they can best make an impact, and making a career out of it - not all of us can be surfers for a living, no matter how much we may wish we could be :) Michael
Hi Patagonia, i attended a screening of the Nevertown movie in my hometown in W.A. hosted by the tremendous, Heath Joske & Co. I think it'd be extremely helpful if you as the combat authority of the mission to bring awareness to the environmental issues that are pressing on us currently, could maybe provide a link or template on your website, whereby concerned folks such as myself & the many who attend these screenings, could perhaps lodge a notion of displeasure to the Gov't body concerned, Namely NOPSEMA. I think it would go a long way to building a case & with ease of access to such a template, give rise to many more signatures that may otherwise find the process too difficult to pursue.
