Notes from the End of the World – Episode 1 | Patagonia Australia
So here it is... the first episode of Notes from the End of the World, a podcast collaboration between Ain’t That Swell and Patagonia.
The new poddy is a free-wheeling, straight-up discussion about the big environmental issues of today, but instead of creating a sense of impending and inevitable doom, these conversations will fire you up to get out and save it.
It’s a mix of surf talk, activism and life in the wild.
Produced in partnership with the Gold Cone Piece award-winning crew from Ain’t That Swell, the podcast cuts through the noise, sorts through the bullshit, and lowers the temperature of the conversation.
The first episode is hosted by Swellian moguls Vaughan Blakey and Jed Smith,...

Trent Mitchell on Lord Howe Island | Roaring Journals
Просмотров 4734 месяца назад
Trent Mitchell first visited Lord Howe Island two decades ago on a whim, chasing waves. He not only found good surf, but also an island paradise with echoes of other South Pacific island paradises. Today, Trent is one of the world’s most respected ocean photographers and has made a life capturing the magic of waves. He recently returned to Lord Howe with Lauren L. Hill, Dave Rastovich and their...
Inside This Soft World | A Nathan Oldfield Film

Over the years, Dave Rastovich and Nathan Oldfield have established one of the most fruitful partnerships in the world of surf film. “Nathan’s signature is that they’re gentle and introspective takes on surfing,” offers Dave. “The culture is pretty loud and raw and fast, and he’s not a loud and fast-paced guy. His movies are meditations and musings and a deeper look at the surfing life. Unlike ...
Nevertown | Trailer

Part surf film, part conservation film, Never Town takes a journey along some wild coastlines and talks with the people fighting to keep them wild. Filmed along the Southern Ocean coasts of Australia, it’s an exploration of what these places mean to surfers… and what surfers are willing to do to save them. As surfing elder Wayne Lynch says, “We mythologised these places. We lose them and we los...

Staying local soynds so much like "connection to country" I love biripi/worimi country so much, i never want to leave. When i do its not bad, but it feels wrong. It feels like i dont belong. As dave said localisation cures so many of our problems. When the english left there mother country, they lost connection with mother and so capitalism began. These conversations are leading to what the old mobs knew. Its great to see. If "Australia" was "settled" with these intentions, there wouldnt be this racist divide and humans wouldnt be going down the hole they are. Stay local!!! YEWWWW

I agree with the pollution part - I also think we need to disconnect from the system to a great extent and go back to getting stuff done on an individual / community level. But the doom & gloom propaganda that demands... a great reset!? F* that

Really interesting discussion. I'm pretty sympathetic to these guys message. Only a rat can when a rat race so your best chance is to drop out, not take part, tend your garden, as the protagonist in Candide concluded. In USA it's basically illegal to be poor so the elites make it hard to not participate in their game. The guy asking questions in the ball cap is super intense; it makes me want to take a few steps back. Rastovich a very impressive speaker; you get the consistent impression he uses his words carefully and that he has his share of humanity, humility and introspection. No hustling, no peacocking. The guy in the white shirt has great stuff to say about protesting and changing the world for the better. I'm a big believer in small political actions as a good way to change things both internally and externally; charity begins at home.

I heard the Canadians chop down epic old growth pine forests to harvest and refine cellulose fibre. Then the cellulose which has no nutritional value at all is used as sossage filler to make offel sales more profitable. Imagine that, choping down old growth forests to sell as food, when it isnt even useful as food. Killing forests to cheat people of their money, while tricking them to eat stuff that isnt even food. I'm not an expert. Check these facts for yourselves please

Hi Patagonia, i attended a screening of the Nevertown movie in my hometown in W.A. hosted by the tremendous, Heath Joske & Co. I think it'd be extremely helpful if you as the combat authority of the mission to bring awareness to the environmental issues that are pressing on us currently, could maybe provide a link or template on your website, whereby concerned folks such as myself & the many who attend these screenings, could perhaps lodge a notion of displeasure to the Gov't body concerned, Namely NOPSEMA. I think it would go a long way to building a case & with ease of access to such a template, give rise to many more signatures that may otherwise find the process too difficult to pursue. I hope you will arrange this quickly as i'm aware that time is critical now. Kind regards, Irish. Snakelegs Ocean Apparel.

Hi Patagonia, I just watched the full version of this (it was uploaded for a few hours then removed it seems). As an Australian and someone who cares deeply for our natural environment, a part of me really liked this video. It also made me very homesick, as I now live in Denmark where I moved to work in the wind energy industry. I couldn't help but feel however that the message, whilst well intentioned, misses the mark a little, because yes, grassroots activism can make a big difference, but its not, as Wayne put it "the only answer", and indeed, on its own will fail in the ultimate goal of sustaining great places like the southern coasts of Australia. This was especially apparent as Dave wrote on his surfboard a message against oil production in the Bight(with a pen made from oil based products). In future videos, it would be nice to also show that there are technical solutions to some of these problems, not simply that activism is the only tool we have, and that you can be a surfer and also contribute in ways that aren't only increasing awareness or being an activist. For example, there are people working to introduce sustainable alternatives to oil based products, and to develop technologies that make alternatives cheaper than those they hope to displace. This, in my opinion, whilst less sexy, is likely to have a larger impact in the long term, as in the business world dollars always speak louder than any other argument (unfortunately). Especially in Australia I think we are sometimes guilty of thinking that someone else will provide the technical solutions to our problems, but videos like this could spur people to not only think of activism but also of studying, understanding where they can best make an impact, and making a career out of it - not all of us can be surfers for a living, no matter how much we may wish we could be :) Michael
