    I've had styes and a chalazion last year. It took three months, but it went away. I used moist-heat eye mask and an ointment called PRID.
    I got another chalazion this year and it swelled up quickly and painfully. Nothing really worked. I was just dealing with it and avoiding people.
    I researched (in desperation) what causes chalazion and basically all eye problems stem from Vitamin A deficiency. I immediately began eating better and taking a multivitamin.
    I also did all the whacky remedies in a last-ditch effort. Eyelash scrub with tea tea oil and heat. Nothing worked except the hot salt water rinses and dabbing castor oil. I started both of those and the very next day it was smaller and less red. It improved every day! Use hot water as hot as you can stand, not room temp, and good natural salt (I used Pink Himalayan) and used a shot glass to soak my eye for about 60-90 seconds and blinking vigorously.
    It's been five days and it's gone! I am commenting to videos to help other people. Ultimately, I believe the Vit. A must have helped tbe most.
    Happy healing, everyone!!!

      Thank you for sharing your experience. Grateful that you found a solution that worked!
      I have had a struggle with my eye. Oil splashed in my eye and caused a sty and then a horrible infection. That resolved with antibiotics but now I have a red hot chalazion on my upper lid - so large that it distorts my vision.
      I am going to follow your treatment plan and see if it works well for me.
      How many times per day did you use the salt water?
      Thank you!
      ***Update - the hot salt water rinsing is working well. As the OP said, results the first day - much less red, the pain was nearly gone, and the swelling had decreased, albeit slightly. Now on week two of this process and I am thrilled with the progress. No pain at all, minimal redness & virtually no swelling other than the chaplain itself.
      Thank you so very much for posting your story!

    Thank you for this information. I’ve been dealing with this issue for about 3 weeks now. However it recently drained and for the most part has gone down. I don’t feel the large bump anymore and I’m still a few days into it healing. I did the warm compress several times a day and even tried the ACV route that I found here on RUclips. Last week I was so fed up that I did the compress as warm as I could stand it for 30 minutes at a time. The next day my eye was itching and I rubbed it vigorously forgetting about the bump. Well immediately my eye was runny and I realized it finally burst. I’m so relieved and wanted to leave a comment because I did not want to have the medical procedure done. I was consistent with the compresses and that worked for me.

I only ever new about a stye, I did some research and came across chalazion and the difference between than and a stye I have tried all the methods you did before going to a eye doctor but I will say that the warm/hot compress I can agree with you 100%! I'm only 20 yrs old so, of course, I'm very self-conscious and I'm about to turn 21 in December with this bump on my upper inner eyelid, everyday i feel like my appearance is an issue even though it's not red or noticeable unless you focus on how my eye folds a bit more than the other eye. Thank you Dr. Marie for taking the time to share your eye recovery journey. I am in the same boat. I also searched and used all method you shared. I even consult a doctor who performed IPL but he told me IPL works better within 2 wks right after you noticed the occurrence. It’s 2.5 months for me so he said IPL won’t work as well for me. I am a nurse, so I wore mask all day at work. I found an article that linked COVID pandemic with more reporting eye issues due to mask. The breath /air will increase bacteria flow onto your eyes, so now, I tried to change mask after 4 hrs. Anyway, I know how you feel, it’s so hard. I don’t wish this on anyone. Informative. Thank you. I have a chalazion as well. tried warm compresses and it won't help. Mine is not red, just a bump on the upper eye lid. My Opthalmologist told me: surgery or 4- 5 times a day a warm compress, which is hard to do for a month. Right now I am doing nothing and it seems not to grow. Interestingly his nurse said that they got a lot more Styes and Chalazions in their clinic during the Covid years, due to stress, according to her. Mine started right after Covid hit the world. I have decided that as long as it doesn;t affect my eye sight, I will live with the thing.

    A very useful video. It is a small medical problem that requires, first of all, a lot of patience! I would like to add:
    1) You can't know now, but it was possible that by waiting another 2 - 6 months it would have disappeared by itself, without risking the side effects of the steroid injection (and there are quite a few!). Statistics regarding self-healing go up to 12 months and even more!
    2) You should have mentioned that the recurrence of the chalazion is possible also due to a weak immune system, so in this regard a treatment to improve immunity is indicated.

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Yes, I have read some chalazions do eventually heal even after 12 months. I was not willing to wait that long because mine was continuously red and inflamed. I do agree with your second point also. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I had a chalazion on my left eye 2 years ago and went through everything you did and more. Mine was about twice the size of yours. When I finally went to eye Dr. they set me up with their surgical center 3 months out with the theory that if it had resolved fine, if not. inject or surgery. Of course, it did not resolve. When I got to the surgery the Dr immediately ruled out injection and went right to surgery. The surgery was cake.. Easy peasy. Took 5 mins. Since that time my left eye has had zero problems.. Meanwhile my right eye has had minor flare for the past two years and now (since 4/1) I have a huge chalazion on my right eye. It is so large that it is pressing hard on my eye. I am going to try to get an appt with my eye Dr tomorrow.. If I could get the surgery tomorrow I would! Best of luck to you.

Had chalazion surgery on Feb 5th, 2024, for 3 small bumps. No pain post-surgery, doc advised removing covers after 4 hours, gave a 5-day medical leave, painkillers, and eye drops. Thank you so much for the video. I’m 61 and I’ve gone through the same thing and tried many home remedies and OTC remedies just like you did to no avail. I’ve probably had 8 or 9 since July of 2018. Each one had to be cut opened and drained. Just had one done this past Friday (11/3/23). This one they scraped from the outside of my lower right eyelid to drain, then injected steroids. Nice scab there now which should fall off in a few days. I’m wondering if it’s my diabetic pills that are causing them. I just saw a video where a lady washes her eyelids in her morning shower with coconut oil then washes it off. She said she had not had a blepharitis flare up since she started that routine. Best of luck that you don’t get another one.

      @dr.lindsaymarie  7 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for watching and commenting! Wow sorry you keep getting recurrent Chalazions. I’m not sure if it is caused by your diabetes medications. I think they occur mostly due to any inflammatory process so that can include any increased inflammation within your body. I was dealing with some recent inflammation within my gut and I think this might have triggered it for me. I have some other videos talking about the importance of an anti-inflammatory diet and limiting processed foods (especially sugar) which I think I can help. Hope you recover well from your recent procedure and that they don’t keep coming back for you. 🙏🏼

    I got an incision a month and a half ago. The chalazion bump reduced but it’s still there and very visible. My doctor today told me to keep applying the ointment because she can’t do an incision again cuz it can lead to permanent scars

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  6 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry to hear you still have a bump. It could be due to a couple of reasons. 1. Not all of the Chalazion was removed. 2. It became inflamed again. 3. You formed a small amount of scar tissue already. It might resolve with time and you could still try applying warm compresses or you could try following up with another eye doctor to get a second opinion. Maybe they would do the steroid injection for you and that might resolve it. Also, if you watched to the end of my video I discussed another treatment with IPL which might also be an option for you to look into. Good luck 🙏🏼

    very informative video. i believe this is what i have. it sucks because i’m 23 and can be very conscious about appearance. i’ve only had these symptoms for 4 days now. i believe it is a Chalazion because it has caused swelling on my upper left eyelid for days now and doesn’t seem to have much improvement even with topical antibiotics and hot compresses. it has no head like a stud typically would come to. don’t know what to do. i am seeking more medical advice so get this resolved as soon as possible, i can’t imagine having this on my face for months! any other advice you could give doc?

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  7 месяцев назад +3

      I know it can be discouraging to have this on your eyelid, and even painful if it is really red and inflamed. In the video I pretty much went over all possible options for conservative treatment. A few things I didn’t mention in the video would include cutting out all sugar in your diet as sugar is very inflammatory. You can also take an anti-inflammatory supplement such as turmeric and see if that helps. If you have tried all of those options and they are not helping, the only other way to get rid of it is to have a procedure done like mentioned in the video. Make an appointment with your eye doctor. You might want to call them first to see if they do both procedures before going so that you don’t happen to waste your time/money. Good luck! 🙏🏼

    @Dr. Lindsay Marie, Thanks a lot for this. I just want to ask, im the type that do have Keloid whenver ive got injuries. I'm concerned do you think having the surgery would cause me to have keloid under my eyelid coupled with the scare the surgery is gona have under the eyelid? 😔

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  6 месяцев назад +1

      Good question. The tissue under the eyelid is slightly different than on the outer surface of the eyelid but if you have a history of keloid, it is possible to form a keloid from any incision in the skin. I would recommend a in-depth discussion with your eye doctor about this to weigh the risks and the benefits. In this case, steroid injection may be a safer option for you to avoid keloid formation. 🙏🏼

Then in October I got a chazalion on the same spot and again it resolved with the scar tissue barely noticeable. Four days ago, even though, I did not have another chazalion the scar tissue became very noticeable. I will have a steroid injection this coming Friday. I wanted to ask you, after the injection, how many days was your eye inflamed? Also did you experience any hypopigmentation? Thank yuou!

    It is like listening to my own story. I endend up having IPL wich resolved THREE Chalazions and made my dry eye symptoms feel much better. My eyes look normal now and I found IPL to be a superb treatment.

      Your story was exactly like mine. So it really resonated. I,m also a doctor (GP). Except that I did not get a steroid injection. I live in Oslo/ Norway. Male healthy, 38 years old. Did a ton of research and visited three eye doctors before I got good help. There is not alot of expertise in this area. IPL works, but you will need to have multiple sessions, with gland expression to see the quality of your meibum, and if it gets any better. My quality improved alot. Do at least four sessions. Each session builds upon the last one. It is like an acumulate effect. It is pricey, but well worth it. At least for me. There is newer research that will back this up.
      I do recommend to get your eyes checked for demodex. If you have any signs, do six weeks with tea tree oil wipes. My eye doctor was very concerned with demodex and his experience is that they do alot of harm. Research will also back this up. I had alot of demodex. Continue with heat mask two/three times a week and eyelid hygiene (not baby shampoo). Eat alot of fish and take omega 3 supplements. Have good blinking habits. These are habits that will keep your MDG i check and not get you any more Chalazions.
      My eye doctor said that the four main causes for MDG in the modern western world are demedox, botox, excessive screen time and acutane use for acne.
      Best of luck to you and keep us posted how things are going :)

    Hi, I just saw your video about being a traveling doctor. Can you please tell me how you managed to do that and if you would recommend any agency/ organization to become a travel doctor. While working as a travel doctor did you receive a salary? My dream is to become a surgeon but I also love to travel and “move” so I am currently thinking about dropping out of med school because I am afraid of living a life in which I can travel too little and not “experience life”. Your knowledge about this topic would be very helpful❤❤

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  10 месяцев назад

      Hi! Great questions… I think there are two main categories to consider. One you can be a traveling doctor and work for a company, usually doing locums which means you are signed on with an agency and can travel to different areas for work wherever there is a need. As far as I know, this is mostly in the US with some offers in Australia and New Zealand, but there may be other companies that service other countries, I’m not sure. This would be a paid position and the salary is usually higher than working locally. Another option is to use your doctoring skills in organizations such as Doctors without Borders or Mercy Ships.. these organizations require at least a two-year commitment, and are usually volunteer or with a very minimal compensation ($2,000 to $3000 per month). The other option is to be a doctor and still have a satisfying travel life. I will say it might be a little harder as a surgeon as surgeons are more dedicated to their practice and their demanding full time surgery schedules. I am a family medicine doctor so it is a little more laid-back for me and I was able to choose a job in Telemedicine where I can work from home anywhere in the US. I usually work about three months on and then travel for three months. I’ve now been to 44 countries! ☺️ I am only able to do this because I have paid off my medical school loan two years after residency. I understand your desire to experience life and I definitely think you should! Medicine is a great and rewarding career but it definitely comes with sacrifices and a HUGE time commitment at least until early to mid 30s . What year in medical school are you in? I’d be happy to answer any more questions you might have about specialties or jobs as a doctor… ❤️

Went to another doctor within the same week who identified a new condition that was probably very much related: demodex blepharitis. It can cause chalazions among a number of other issues I was also having such as itchy eyes or foreign body sensation as well as constantly losing eyelashes. There is a new fda approved drop that takes care of the demodex mites that cause these issues. I would have probably struggled longer had I not had this diagnosis.

    Hii Dr. Marie!
    I was also suffering from chalazion from last 3 months! But just 4-5 days ago my chalazion bursted on its own while I was doing my regular hot compression. At the very first, chalazion was present in the middle of the eye but at the time of bursting , all it's stuff came down really close to my eyelid. So you know now i feel that my chalazion drained properly, but still I can feel even can see a small (quite small) bump at this place from where my chalazion drained out!
    So i want to know what to expect after a chalazion get drained out? What are the stages i will go through while it's recovery! When will my eye get to look completely normal? :(

    • @dr.lindsaymarie
      @dr.lindsaymarie  4 месяца назад +2

    I just had a Chalazion removed last week. Eyelid is still puffy and seems like it’s holding water. My surgeon never even gave me an eyepatch. When I first left the office, it was not swollen but the next day it was puffy again, and has remained puffy for going on 11 days now. My recommendation is to definitely get a ride Nobody in the medical office encouraged me to have a ride to pick me up and drive me home. My eye was definitely bothering me to the point where I did not feel safe. Driving home. From my research, it looks like I have Ptosis as my eyelid is droopy still. It does not match the other one. Prior to surgery, This was ongoing for 3 months from a blocked gland. I still feel it’s clogged somehow even after surgery. Not sure if it was from when I touched my eye with some bacteria on accident or possible face or eye creams with retinoids I heard. My eye blew up got very swollen. Used every home remedy such as tea tree, turmeric, tons of antivirals like oregano oil and garlic and was also prescribed steroid drops and antibiotic doxycycline. I’m wondering how to clean the lid if it’s still clogged if it’s a gland. I dunno but wish my eye would go back to normal. Might seek out a steroid drop for my eyelid. Will post video eventually on my experience with this. On further inspection it definitely looks like ptosis as it’s only my left upper eyelid. It’s so embarrassing and I’m getting so frustrated and close to the edge. Can’t take much more. I wonder if it was from the retinoid creams, because personally, I feel like it is droopy from still holding a Adema and swelling. Somehow it is holding more water and or not properly draining. I also wonder if it is allergic, maybe it is my memory foam mattress that I got recently.perhaps it was from an infection from touching my eye. My honest thought is maybe I got it by touching it after sexual intercourse with my gf as she found out she had a uti shortly after I got my blepharitis. Thanks for any input. I’m hoping to get a kenalog injection and wish I would’ve did it originally rather then cuttreage incision. This is been by far the most frustrating and embarrassing thing of my life. I also fractured my hand a few years ago and I thought that chronic pain made me depressed. This is really getting to me.

    In my clinic in the Philippines we do the NICE technique in removing stubborn chalazions.

    Hello docter, I had LASIK surgery two years ago, and I've had a chalazion on my lower eyelid for about a year. I've tried various home remedies for it but nothing seems to work. It's been quite frustrating for me because I'm only 22 years old, and I feel like it affects the appearance of my eye. My eye looks a bit swollen because of it, and it's been causing me distress. Recently, I noticed another chalazion on my other eyelid this time on the lower part. I believe this might be related to the LASIK surgery because my eyes have become more sensitive since then.
    I'm worried about getting surgery for these chalazions, especially because of the sensitivity of my eyes after LASIK. I've seen my eye doctor three times, and each time she's advised against surgery, saying it's not severe enough. She's only given me ointment for it. I'm not sure what to do considering my eyes' condition and the presence of chalazions in both eyes. Can I safely have surgery for both eyes?
    NOTE:my eye doc didn't know about my lasik

      Good questions! I know dry eyes can be a side effect of Lasik eye surgery. I am not sure if the eyelids are affected or more so the actual eyeball in that case. For your concern about the chalazions, my best advice would be to check with a different eye doctor to see what their thoughts would be. As I mentioned in the video every eye doctor has a different threshold for when they do procedures. You might find one that is more willing to do it for you if that’s what you want. Good luck!

    Hi there, I had a chalazion 2 years ago and basically I cured it with hot compresses for over 2 months. I had used tobradex ointment with no success either. So I continued with hot compresses and finally I noticed the bump on my right upper eyelid started to move down. Finally one morning I saw lots of pus which drained. However it did not seem fully over so I tried a solution with apple cider vinegar. After few days more pus came out and finally the chalazion fully disappeared. Now unfortunately I got another chalazion on my lower left eyelid. It’s much smaller than the first one. I’m trying again with tobradex and apple cider vinegar. I hope it will work.
    Will update you in few days..
    But this whole situation is so annoying…
    UPDATE 26.03.2024: today the bump is much smaller but the skin still reddish. After I use the ACV it tends to swell and get red but few hours after it gets better. Will see again in the next days.
    UPDATE 29.03.2024: chalazion disappeared and the skin is not red anymore although the skin color is slightly whiter.

    Oh my goodness I am glad I found this video. I have had a chalazion for two months. I used warm compresses and a prescription eye drop. I thought it was a stye and was given doxycycline. I had an allergic reaction to it which I never had with antibiotics before. Just saw my ophthalmologist today and now have to see an ocular plastic surgeon as my bump is hardened to a growth and they want a biopsy. I have history of skin cancers and had an iris melanoma in my other eye. So now I go on my next journey with this bump. I did not know this condition can last so long. It does interrupt your life and well-being. I am a long time makeup user and am always careful about removal at night and replacing makeup every few months. I have worn it for over 60 years so not wearing it is a real low point for me.

      Aww, I know it can be worrisome. I have seen it can be common to have a Chalazion even in younger children. I believe most of the eye doctors like to give it more time for them before doing any procedures. Hey doctor, I'm 22. 5 months ago I got a stye. And it was so painful with little burning sensation. It was a big stye in lower eyelid almost in the tear gland. And I got two more while coping with it on upper eyelid near lash line. Those were big too. My doctor gave me eyecream and eyedrop. I used it the pain got better so did the swelling as they got drained but still they are present as painless little bump. I got one more it's not so big but I'm frustrated. My doctor said surgery needs to be done on the lower eyelid stye. But I'm afraid I gonna get styes again and again and I have to do surgeries again and again?

      @dr.lindsaymarie  Месяц назад

      Correct but a chalazion can also be in an acute phase and be inflamed. The main difference is the location. A sty is on the surface of the eyelid, whereas the Chalazion is more in the middle of the eyelid. In the chronic phase the Chalazion is not red and tender.

    I had a Chalazion twice on my lower eyelid. . First time was about 4 years ago. Then i had another one develop about 3 weeks ago.
    First time, the warm compresses did not make it better for me either. I went to 2 eye doctors the first time. First doctor gave me steroid ointment to try and they did not work.
    2nd doctor told me to use warm compress and if those do not work, he would drain the Chalzion.
    After about almost 2 months, it drained on its own.
    This time, about 3 weeks ago, it started again. I was using warm compress and cleaning my eye lid and it made it worse for about 4 days before eye doctor appointment.
    Doctor said the Chalizon was "large" and decided to drain it that day. It is healing now and much improved. He also cleaed my tear ducts with saline solution at my follow up appointment. My tear ducts were slightly blocked.
