  • What's up guys!
    This week's Vlog is one I filmed while shearing for the Calvey Family on the gorgeous Achill Island. I got plenty of gathering and shearing shots as well as some of footage of the Island, although camera footage just doesn't do it justice!
    Enjoy 🔥

    Beautiful scenery! I just love watching herding dogs do what they are supposed to do. I've got a tiny 15 lb Sheltie that I'm going to have herding instinct tested then hopefully a few ducks and Babydoll Southdowns for her to harass in the spring.

    I got stuff for my dog before from the vet when he had pad trouble, botanica I think it was called, good stuff. A rub of a mulcher around the place would make the gathering a lot easier, hard for the dogs with the rushes.

    • @ewetube.videos
      @ewetube.videos  Год назад

      Interesting john! I think the issue with the mulcher is that it's such hilly stoney ground!

    Why don't they shear the wethers? Is it to make them look bigger in sales or something?

    • @ewetube.videos

      I think they end up using most of them in the butcher Mary, if it were me I would probably shear them.

    What a lovely place. Looks just like we think Ireland looks like. Do you have any idea how old the stone building are?
    What are the high grasses in the field called?
    Is it something the Sheep eat? It looks terribly course.
    How do you get to this island, by ferry?
    Thank you for taking us there!

    Is the wool on those Mayo sheep any good? It looks soft the way it comes off.

    • @ewetube.videos

      It's worth about 5c per kg Wendy, shocking 🥵

    • @wendyrowland7787
      @wendyrowland7787 Год назад +1

      @@ewetube.videos I only realised after seeing another of your shearing epics that the wool is shaded and a lot shears off cotted from their harsh life on the mountain. Good to see Joanne, she is quite a gal! I think your wool should at least make good insulation material. I think it may have found it’s way into army blankets in the past.

    Are these "double-coated" sheep? I seem to see long outer (or guard) hairs, as well as a softer under coat. Am I seeing that right?

    • @ewetube.videos
      @ewetube.videos  9 месяцев назад

      Ah just longer wool on them, it has sort of a hairy feel to it.

    No that's not the first lister, shedhanded in a shed with one with a massive flywheel, that was over 20 years ago on a small old farm, had to warn my young children to stay well from it, that was in New Zealand.

    What’s the story behind the wee shoes ya wear while Sheerin the sheep

    • @ewetube.videos
      @ewetube.videos  Год назад

      Special shearing shoes called Moccasins or Mocks for short Eoin, they allow you to be quicker and more nimble with your feet as you go around the sheep rather than clunky boots or wellies. They also have no sole so you're down closer to the sheep and you have better grip with them then boots or wellies. That's my understanding of them!
