Oh God! i wish I'd seen this last year. Knowing where the shut of valve is KEY. Plumber showed me after the damage was done.

I lived in Michigan for 50 years in a dozen different houses with many periods of bitterly cold weather. I was completely unaware of the problem of frozen pipes. I never had any problems. Then I moved to coastal Washington state with a very mild climate. Here my landlord is obsessed with the possibility of frozen pipes and insists that I run water continuously in freezing temperatures. As far as I know, there has never been any problem with frozen pipes in this house either, yet the landlord behaves as though it is sure to be a problem at every cold snap. Apparently Michigan plumbers know how to prevent the problem and Washington plumbers don't.

My biggest concern is the garage. The water heater is in there. I'm a renter. I don't feel safe keeping a space heater in there unattended. I'm just hoping we get through this cold weekend without problems.
Get a water heater blanket. Don't turn the thermostat lower than 45 degrees. Always leave the faucets dripping a tiny drop every minute. If you want to not waste it then put a pot under the faucet and drink it later. (I purify my water so I run it through in the morning.)
I'm a lazy insulator and start my projects in the late summer so to be done by mid autumn. ❤ Always plastic on the windows.
@@PlatinumIrishroseis better to leave the faucet dripping with warm/hot water or cold water? My pipes froze up overnight and this morning we had to warm the pipes and turned up the water heater. And luckily it thawed the pipes. But tonight it’s supposed to freeze again and I’m definitely worried.
@@thescramble4309 I was told 1 hot water one (furthest from the water heater) . Let it run for a bit until hot and then on drip .

I don’t understand the thermostat fan but I’ll do it! 😄 Also when do we stop / turn off the fan to not waste energy? Stop when we’re above freezing temps?
Another tip: Don't use a standard extension cord with a space heater. Make sure its rated for the correct wattage of the space heater.
I have a front spicket that we have a cap on bc it drips all the time. We have winter weather temps coming tonight. Doesn’t that cap need to be off and water drained and just let drip or drain then cap back on and put cover back on?
Thanks for all the tips. As a first time homeowner, they are super helpful. My question is if I were to shutoff the water mains completely, won’t that be bad. Is there a downside to it?
On another channel the gentleman shuts off his supply, then blows air through the system to force drain the water.
Sounds like advice for the sprinkler system. If you shut off your water from the main for the house, you won't have water.@@steven.h0629
You would shut the main if you have a leak somewhere, hence you need to know where the shut off valve is. Best to let the faucet trickle/drip.
How do you find your major shut off valve?
Had water pipes freeze and burst not once, not twice but 3 winters in a row. Was ready for it this winter being worse than the past 3 winters pipes blew. Space heaters on the pipes in the 2 areas burst B4 & a very small drip from the hot & cold water in the kitchen for the kitchen sink. 3 days of serious freeze here in the mid-west and so far, so good.

I don’t have a basement, and my pipes run underneath my house. Do I need to insulate those pipes? Are there any other solutions other than insulating those pipes?

I live in an apartment complex with 6 floors. Where is the water valve located so the pipes in my apartment don’t freeze? Is it possible for only (4) apartments in a 150 unit building to freeze?

I put a salt lick in my sink and let the water dribble on it, keeps the drain pipes from freezing.

On tip #2, is the water suppose to trickle or drip? Cold water, Hot water or both?
I'm asking because my pipes got frozen last night, woke up to brush my teeth and no water!
I opened my facet 1/4 of the way and turned up the furnace in the house to 72 degrees. Eventually the pipes thawed and I now have water...ALL your tips are on point and could save someone the trouble of having to thaw the pipes...that is not fun, and worst if there's a burst in the pipe!
Some say drip is fine but I'd recommend a very light trickle. Both cold and hot water so if you have a faucet with a single handle, make sure it's in the middle.

My main concern is that my pipes are good at this point but my lady thinks it's okay to turn the water off because the temperature is going up . But if she trun it off will the freeze up
Hey is it ok to leave the drip hot or cold ? Our hot water pipes froze overnight and this morning we didn’t have hot water. We warmed up the pipes and eventually it came back to normal flow. It’s gonna get to 17 F tonight so I wanna leave the faucets dripping or trickling , preferably warm water but not sure if that’s safe or not ? 😊
Our kitchen sink not working. Did y’all turn the water off before you thawed it out? I’m trying to see if we need to or just thaw it out.
@@C3N-214 yes we turned the water main off. Let the pipes drain and then got some hot water and drenched some towels and put them on the pipes. Also saw another tip to turn the water heater up on high , which actually worked. About an hour later turned the water main on , slowly, like I didn’t open it up all the way. Eventually I turned it open and lo and behold , hot water back on . I’d say be mindful and look at other videos out there for some tips .

@danielpenrodii2389 but now we only have cold water, no hot. The bathtub now only has a trickle of cold water 😢. Will a blow dryer help?
This might be a crazy question…is it ok to take showers or baths during a deep freeze?? It always makes me nervous to have that much water (water pressure) going through the pipes. Or is it better to just use water as usual??

I can't find my water shut off valve. We just bought this house in Illinois. We're from California. So I'm nervous for the winter with not being able to locate this. Can you help? With any info on where I might look
Not sure what set up you have. Sometimes the valve will be outside the house by the street and the town will come and turn it off. Need to drain all the pipes and put antifreeze in the toilets or get all the water out of the bottom of the toilet.

Hi i just have 1 question that if electricity cut off in the house and no body live there and main water shut off walve is closed then any chance of freezing or brust in the pipe ??
@@artville_ayushi9392 I would say yes.. the pipes should be drained as well if you are totally 'winterizing'.

Same... I told my brother it was only necessary to leave cold dripping, but now we don't have hot water 😢. Can the pipes still burst even when we have cold water still?

My parents have been on vacation for the last several weeks. I turned their house water off (water from the city lines on the street curb). To my understanding, the pipe system is empty now, even if it is too cold, water frozen and expanded, there is room for ice/water inside the pipe? Do I need to worry about a water burst pipe? It is gonna be 1F these several days in my area. I have faucets + water/gas pipes exposed outside the wall, and face a lake that brings a lot of cold wind on top of the bad weather. Please advise.
Did you drain the water from the pipes after you shut off the water? If so, then you have little to worry about.
