The spoon bit indeed has a special meaning in Korea: “A golden spoon refers to those born to a chaebol or very rich family, a silver spoon to those born to a relatively well-off or middle-class family, and lastly a dirt spoon to those born to a low-income family.” They also have a song titled "Silver Spoon" (뱁새; also known as "Baepsae" or "Crow-Tit") that delve deeper into the subject.
Similarly to English, a person who is spoon-fed can be referred to as a person who is spoiled or perhaps useless. The difference I see is that the material of the spoon represents the status, thus, more expensive material equals higher income families. Nonetheless, both shows how one is raised.
Live as you, enjoy your youth. It's ok to make mistakes, it's ok to lose...that's what I personally think Suga means with the I'll forgive you line. I'll forgive your mistakes, your flaws, and your losses as you live a fiery youth.
Jin once said that Fire was for him their most meaningful song. For me it is a song celebrating youth, energy that should not be killed by serious adult life. It’s the essence of what BTS stands for - for me.
My interpretation of the ‘I forgive you’ line is that even if the world is harsh on the youth, including the older generations (spoon hierarchy) or the haters, BTS will forgive us for living unapologetically as ourselves. Weirdness and flaws included. These older albums are so good! Hope you can do more and thank you for cheering up my Monday after a rough day at work!
They were a voice for the lost youth which was much needed at that time. But their very fierce stance on these issues were quite shocking to many, especially coming from an “idol” group. BTS took a lot of risks that have clearly paid off now, but it should never be underestimated that they were a huge factor in opening the doors for others. Idol groups now have much more freedom than they used to and that’s a lot down to BTS bringing global attention and taking the brunt of the criticism and the hate. They were like a shield (bulletproof 😉) But with the different cultures especially it’s another reality there for young people. BTS helped give them a much needed voice in desperate times through their music and especially this youth series. Thank you for this vid 💜
Thank you for listening to BTS.. back in those days, the Korean music industry (and media) was dominated by 3 big companies and BTS being from a small company, they were the underdogs. From the first scene of this mv, BTS was outside of the fence but Suga got in and set the person in black (depicting the Korean music industry) on FIRE cos BTS was ready to burn it all up and the rest is history! I love BTS and am so proud to by an ARMY! looking forward to your next BTS reactions :)
November 2021 I made a last minute decision and flew to LA to watch their first two in person stadium concerts after the pandemic. First time ever in the US and first proper solo trip that far. This song was a stand out - just mental live! Energy off the charts. ARMY looked after each other so well and I never wanted to come home 😂🔥
agree!!! their live performances of fire are just unparalleled, feel so lucky I got to see them in la too, the energy for fire is phew! incredible. their stamina for ptd concerts overall too, like all ot7 songs back to back, they really gave it their all and it was NOT easy, so so grateful
I didn’t realise how many title tracks you haven’t had a chance to do yet! There’s still Dope, Spring Day, Save Me, Danger to name a few. It’s a shame because we know now the antics yt pulls as these would have really got you some good subs! ARMY are loyal af though to genuine people so it’s never a loss and you get to see more of their crazy versatility too!
i was wondering if he'd done dope too! i feel like spring day can benefit from some additional context prior to a reaction, but dope is one i think he could do cold and really enjoy
BTS has like their own universe. Some music videos play into the universe. There are also some comics which give more detail to the whole story. "I'll forgive you" might be one of those story integrated nods.
The MAMA 2016 live of this was jaw-dropping. The whole performance leading up to it, the concept of Demian and the ENERGY in fire was next level. Could feel their hunger through the screen!
A lot of people don't realise either that at this time, even though they had a lot of people paying attention, they were still very much underdogs and the company were still on the fence with their future. A lot of these mvs from 2015/16 were done on a serious budget and had their friends or the staff members (a literal hand full of people who grew up with them) step in as extras. You can see such a difference from the HYYH mvs to the Love Yourself series and beyond. But even so, these songs are still so timeless. Yes they are more focussed on choreo than visuals for those very reasons but there are still so many Easter eggs and clues hidden in. They've always been 10 steps ahead and these will never get old. Love ya Knox, hope you get to see the comments about all the hidden meanings. BTS are so under-appreciated in the story-telling game.
I'm in shock right now 😳 You reacting to BTS for quite long time, and now it's the first time you saw Fire? No way, I need to check out your reactions again...
I don’t know if anyone has ever told you but Seo Taiji are a legendary 90s Korean group and they were very fuck the system. They did a concert in 2017 with BTS and passed the torch to them as the next generation leaders for the youth. They’ve always sort of been defenders of the younger generation and it’s weaves into all of their stuff. Even from their very first song No More Dream. And you have the theme of youth and friendship, love and loss in the BU etc. Its all really fucking cool!!
The catching the guy on fire is a recreation of a famous album cover of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. Suga wrote this & so fire has become his element in BTS hagiography.
Thank you Knox!! So happy to see more BTS :) Oh this is actually a lot deeper than it seems on the surface (then again isn't that BTS in a nutshell haha). There are some socio-political undertones here to the economic landscape at that time and the way the youth are treated. This song links with themes from Baepsae and continues through their entire youth album series (the HYYH series and also the time of the BU!) I hope one day you get the chance to see how much more elevated their songs are when taken in context of their albums. I love your breakdowns so much and really appreciate you being such an ally always for us and BTS!
I just LOVE how Knox always starts his reactions with the "The best intro EVER" line. Thank you so much for appreciating BTS and the fact how every single piece (even seemingly light bops) has deeper meaning/sentiment to it. Thank you for your approach. 💜
I read as an interpretation by BTS Army, it means, "Don't label me, I'm just a human. I don't need social class definitions. " Thank you, Knox, for making me "think".
Knox, I'm just commenting for the algorithm. I'm really eager to help your channel grow. I owe you so much. You have basically taught me rap basics and beyond. Now I'm listening to lyrics with a very different set of ears. I love you
The talent that BTS has in other genres and history, the philosophy they have in their songs IS ART. For my part, when I saw bts I made the decision to be only army, listening to other genres but within the music in Korean only BTS
The ending with the words ‘Boy Meets What’ is a teaser for the Wings album and the first song off that is called ‘Boy Meets Evil’ which is a J-Hope solo. You should check that out!
Ah what a banger! Love this song and love your breakdowns as always 🔥 It’s part of their youth series so you hit the nail on their head with the deeper meanings. Their albums as a whole in the specific storytelling series are mind-blowing and we know BTS are the brains behind their concepts and stories. Love!
This is the bts I got into, I remember being a BIG hater before this song, but right when it came out my sister showed me and I instantly became a fan.
Don't know if you have idiom in English "burn the youth" when you don't grind a lot and study, enjoying parties and action instead. Also! Song is fire, so they wear party clothing also literally partying in the video burning the youth like teenagers. I guess it fits "it's ok to be loser" and "we live your success life" Literally "It could be you but you decided to burn your youth while we're grinding our path to the top." and the last line "I'll forgive you" so they are not salty toxic rapers, they say its ok to let yourself some relax and fire. Just don't fully commit so you are burning to nothing. At least it's what I've got thinking about their philosophy and popular idioms P.S. Note: this song is literally fire 🔥 Thats why a stranger is burning when he got handshake with suga (suga wearing headphones fires him with the start of this song) Thats a multiplay on one word "fire", so impressive and have a lot of symbolism
@KnoxHill Spoon reference; Baepsae/Silver Spoon possible meaning- The word “baepsae” translated as “crow-tit”Korean crow-tit is a small bird, also known as parrotbill. It is a metaphor for someone with no privilege (opposite of those born with silver spoon in their mouth). You should watch Dope and Baepsae live versions.
BTS don't only encourage the youth to be themselves and do what they want but they also criticise them. Hope you can check out their song "Spine Breaker" where they reprimanded youths this generation. It was a fun song with a meaningful lyrics (with a fun choreography on the side too that Jin personally made😂) And I want to know what you think about it.
You are most definitely my favorite reactor! The way you're able to always pay attention to the lyrics while still appreciating the music and ALSO catching the little details is so immensely impressive and satisfying. You deserve so much more in views and subscriptions.
I became an Army when this song came out. This has been one of my favorite songs ever since even though I don't really like this type of music. Don't know why this one has such a huge impact on me but I love it. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
I've seen this MV a gazillion times, watched as many reactions to it. NO ONE has said that was a mic they are draggin'. Duh. I really appreciate your break down, one of the best I've even seen. I'm going to subscribe for me. Thank you.
Ah I’ve been hoping you’d go back and finish the title songs!! Thank you 😊 Fire is actually quite the anti-establishment song and could be paired with Dope. The spoon lines are them basically saying ‘why are you calling us a dirty spoon, we’re human too’ because they had no power or influence. Then in Dope they talk more about what the younger generation has had to give up as a result of societal expectations and the older generations. Such an anthem. I had this on all the time when it came out 😆
Man what a kind you have. Dissecting right away…seeing Youth on the fence. It took me a minute to notice that back in the day. Glad you got to do this one.
In English there's the saying "born with a silver spoon in one's mouth" to refer to someone who's privileged. In Korean there's also an expression about a "dirt spoon" someone who is poor and as such bound to have a less fortunate future. So when BTS says I'm just a human not a spoon, they call for social justice, to be regarded as human and treated humanely regardless of their background, monetary possessions. They have a few songs directly relating to this sentiment, like Bapsae ("Crow tit" literal transplation, but the song is also referred to as "Silver Spoon"), N.O. and I feel to some extent Ddang! I just found this explanation from an Army online about the "Spoon Class Theory" The silver spoon has become a symbol of the worsening social conflict or rather division in the hierarchical country South Korea. This phenomenon is widely talked about in online communities, in other words it became a newly coined word that is frequently used among the younger generations. It is referred to as "the spoon class theory". According to this viral concept, wealth and social status is ranked into four groups of spoons, namely gold (금), silver (은), bronze (동) and soil/dirt (흙). Each spoon equaling a different wealth or social status. This idea of the silver spoon that is mentioned in the song "Baepsae", does come from the same western idea of being born with a silver spoon in your mouth. The spoon class theory categorizes Koreans into four main classes. First are the golden spoons. They characterize the wealthiest and most privileged citizens of South Korea. All those who are born from prestigious and affluent families. Therefore, they are preoccupying the most dominant and prominent position within this class structure. About 0.1% of the population embodies this economic status. The silver spoon represents a relatively wealthy family with $1-$2 million in assets. They are in the top 3% of the population and better off than any other lower class. The bronze spoon symbolizes 7.5% of the population with an annual salary of $50 -$80,000, so in other words the upper-middle class, the ones from the average, common background. The soil/dirt spoon signifies the rest of the population. These are low income working class families that are unable to enjoy certain luxuries due to their financially disadvantaged situation. They are forced to confront every hardship and suffer on their own. “To put it another way, the spoon theory sheds light on the fact that the younger generation of South Korea is, ironically, forced through this vicious competitive system out of no reason at all, since advancement within this market system is hopelessly impossible”, as stated by a Korean blogger. Now, BAEPSAE is a Korean bird, called Crow tit in English. There is a common idiom/ saying : "the crow tit will break it's legs trying to walk like a stork". Other translations include try-hard and poser. Basically trying to be something that your not. BTS refers to themselves as baepsae because they are not part of a big name entertainment company and they are still becoming international idol stars. They are proud to be baepsae. Linking it to “Silver Spoon"… as I have mentioned, the younger generation is forced to live in this competitive system of “spoon rankings”… and they are regarded as lower class when they started, since they did not come from the elite Big 3. But they are proud to be called “Baepsae”, especially now that they have proven the haters are VERY wrong about them.
I am always awed watching you catch things that I didn't see. Your break downs are fantastic. This is a turn it up while cruzin through the streets summer feel. And I definitely will be every decent weathered day of the year along with mic drop. Pied piper , dimples and hip hop lover. ❤❤❤❤much love to you and yours. Your knowledge and insight is appreciated more than you know.
This is one of my favorite songs to see them do in concert. You should watch one of their last performances of this I think it is even way better than the video.
6:41 or back to the lyrics 6:23, Your right, the translations are wrong, its actually "It's ok to just live because we're still young Who do you think you are to say otherwise Stop comparing, I'm only human, so what"
The last line from Suga is "I'll forgive you" and has become pretty iconic then you have V saying the chorus once more "Set everything on fire bow wow wow". Welcome to Army.
Always so intuitive and on point Knox :) There’s lots of connections like you rightly guessed. Quite a few are hidden in the visuals and it does have a political undertone to it that is more obvious as a fluent Korean speaker or knowing the context of the albums. I think you’d enjoy Dope which is slightly connected to this song so maybe that one next :) The figure in black I see as the industry/haters. Thank you and looking forward to the Patr eon live on Friday.
You should definitely check out ONEUS as well. Especially „Bring it on“, „No diggity“ and „Same scent“. Also their debut „Valkyrie“ and one of their recent songs „Unforgettable“ are really really great. 😁
You'd have loved it at the time Knox, all the clues leading from one era or album to the next. Everything connects - literally everything, even from their solely hip hop albums. The amount of effort put in to a decade worth of music is insane. Obviously the pandemic threw a spanner in the works but we have the beautiful BE album that came from that uncertain time. Damn I just love them for everything they've helped me through. Hope they're well and looking forward to 2025! Really keen to know if you're planning on reacting to D-Day too as know you'll have lots to say on that album?
I don't want to be too deep but pay attention to the writings in the wall. Similar with dope they had German writings there, the themes for Bapsae, fire, and dope are quite similar. They are calling out the golden spoons while encouraging the youth which is the Bapsae or the silver spoons to ignite your dreams. Korea actually is a fuckd up county, I learned this through their songs, their youth are pressured too much that giving up your dreams, social relationships, children and having a house is very normal. Having a house is a pipe dream there, maybe you can have one using all 20 years of your salary. And the rent is pretty high. People gave up owning houses. In the scene where jhope lit up the stove there is a writing there that says "it's cold outside". And I've noticed that all of the painting has a building drawing. BTS actually intended to be the voice for the youth. Since Korea has the highest youth suicide rate.
Agust D is live streaming his two concerts today and tomorrow if you wanted to watch Knox. Today’s one is in half an hour. There will be people sharing their l*nks everywhere I’m sure. Can’t wait to finally see his whole set properly!
About the lyrics and theories of the mv and the song i myself need to still search about it cause im sure there are so many things i haven't understood yet but the song is a criticizing korean society education system ، culture and families who put a lot of pressure on teenagers and students to study a lot work so hard To be the best It's a big problem in korea many teenagers can't stand it and kill themselves or get depressed It's like how you are important is based on what you achive you should be the best the most beautiful the number one Unless you will be ashamed by even your own family and the society and school and teachers and ... So the song is talking about just someone who don't give a damn about all these shitt going on And wants to leave their lives be young have fun and it is talking about that you are important just beacuse you exist and you are a human not beacuse of what you achive how much money you have and take from world And It's a kind of related to one of their main massages Know yourself Love yourself Speak yourself And it reminded me of one lines of their last song Run BTS ( if we leave fast let us die young ) It might be something ordinary for us but for their society the dong was a hit and kind of brok the steriotypes and i would like to put it in the same story line of We are bullet proof No Fire
Without fail any time you do BTS I won’t get a noti 😂 But we won’t go there! Thankfully I was having a nosey to see if you’d done any recent BTS and voila! Thank you mate.

I just found this explanation from an Army online about the "Spoon Class Theory"
The silver spoon has become a symbol of the worsening social conflict or rather division in the hierarchical country South Korea.
Excelente forma de empezar la semana, con una reacción de Knox a BTS! Gracias por el video 💜
Oh Knox! Seriously you haven't reacted to Fire yet???? I don't believe it! It's one of the most iconic BTS songs, like Idol, On, Dope...
This was the song that got me into BTS way back when….and Dope. Then there was no going backward xx
Fire performance live hit crazy , their dancing ❤❤
This shows how massive their entire discography is...
This is one of my favorite songs to see them do in concert. You should watch one of their last performances of this I think it is even way better than the video.
Xg galz - two tens
with Maya and Harvey
Xg galz - nothing
With Jurin and cocna!!!! Both are fire
Boy Meets Evil is the one you should react to next! The ending of Fire sets it up nicely.
I still can't go over their live performance to this song
Your reaction was FIRE! I think they’re saying even if you think you are a loser you can change that and come through the fire a better person.
4:09 read these lines in perspective of their fans, and it would be an encouragement song then read that line again in perspective of their haters
6:41 or back to the lyrics 6:23, Your right, the translations are wrong, its actually "It's ok to just live because we're still young
Who do you think you are to say otherwise
Stop comparing, I'm only human, so what"
The last line from Suga is "I'll forgive you" and has become pretty iconic then you have V saying the chorus once more "Set everything on fire bow wow wow". Welcome to Army.
Amazing reaction, great comments and I love being on the Patreon
You should check out ANY of their Cypher songs! TOP TIER
I am addicted to this masterpiece
Always so intuitive and on point Knox :) There’s lots of connections like you rightly guessed. Quite a few are hidden in the visuals and it does have a political undertone to it that is more obvious as a fluent Korean speaker or knowing the context of the albums. I think you’d enjoy Dope which is slightly connected to this song so maybe that one next :) The figure in black I see as the industry/haters. Thank you and looking forward to the Patr eon live on Friday.
Will catch this later but wanted to say thanks a lot man!
sending love cause I enjoy you videos so much. You analyse things so well, it teaches me so much.
Eyy that's what we like to see on a Monday. Much love Knox :)
Love your analysis. Good luck to your channel.
A masterpiece of course!!!! BTS forever!!!!!
You should definitely check out ONEUS as well. Especially „Bring it on“, „No diggity“ and „Same scent“. Also their debut „Valkyrie“ and one of their recent songs „Unforgettable“ are really really great. 😁
I always love your analysis, Knox! Hope you are well!
I would LOVE for you to react to their cyphers!!!
nvm, i forgot you did that already, and that I watched it lmao. But instead, maybe some of the rapper"s solo stuff. or maybe UGH
Your reaction is 1 of my favorites among those ive watch :)
Hill thank you for this reaction❤
Find the live performance of this great song! It is FIRE!!!!!
Lives are even better...❤
It's my opinion that Fire was the big hit that broke through to international hip/hop fans.
Let’s gooo 🔥🔥 Hope you’re good Knox!
Knox, I really need you to see Cameron Phillips cover on BTS rap and his sketch on BTS Rap Battle, so cool and funny as hell😂
One of my all-time fav from BTS.
My only question is: were you not ARMY before?! 😆
Love you, Knox! 🦄
just clickbait ig
Agust D is live streaming his two concerts today and tomorrow if you wanted to watch Knox. Today’s one is in half an hour. There will be people sharing their l*nks everywhere I’m sure. Can’t wait to finally see his whole set properly!
"Spoon" = "golden/silver spoon" = born wealthy
Fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 one of my fav songs
Almost every movie that was shot in NYC in the 80's have the wet floor night scenes, even if there qas no rain at all in the movie. Lol
About the lyrics and theories of the mv and the song i myself need to still search about it cause im sure there are so many things i haven't understood yet but the song is a criticizing korean society education system ، culture and families who put a lot of pressure on teenagers and students to study a lot work so hard
To be the best
It's a big problem in korea many teenagers can't stand it and kill themselves or get depressed It's like how you are important is based on what you achive you should be the best the most beautiful the number one
Unless you will be ashamed by even your own family and the society and school and teachers and ...
So the song is talking about just someone who don't give a damn about all these shitt going on
And wants to leave their lives be young have fun and it is talking about that you are important just beacuse you exist and you are a human not beacuse of what you achive how much money you have and take from world
And It's a kind of related to one of their main massages
Know yourself
Love yourself Speak yourself
And it reminded me of one lines of their last song Run BTS
( if we leave fast let us die young )
It might be something ordinary for us but for their society the dong was a hit and kind of brok the steriotypes and i would like to put it in the same story line of
We are bullet proof
No
Fire
Without fail any time you do BTS I won’t get a noti 😂 But we won’t go there! Thankfully I was having a nosey to see if you’d done any recent BTS and voila! Thank you mate.
You want Dope next but there’s political undertones that aren’t obvious if not Korean. Just so you know it has that deeper meaning 💜
Such a banger
I suggest to react " Not Today - BTS"
man…you just had to be there:’)
Hello,
I recommend two new songs for you to check out.
“Moonlight” of SB19, and also Josh Culken’s “Yoko na” both super cool music videos.
