- 15 and learning to speak: Imagine living without being able to communicate with anyone around you. That's the reality for many deaf people living in the developing world who've never been taught sign language. Kiki King went to rural Uganda in 2014 to meet some of the countries most isolated children and the people helping them find their voice for the first time. This episode first aired on 21/11/2014.

He looked so sad at the beginning it broke my heart. It was so so beautiful to see him smile. This is the best video.
Yeah, he looked so sad.
i agree bless him
Ikr I cried when he started smiling
Sarah E I agree. I wanted to wrap in my arms and take him away
Hes smile is precious, make me cry
While he is at home he looks sad and while he first came in school he did too. But seeing him smile just made my day so much!
How beautiful. Communication is taken for granted yet it is so vital.

That's why I watched this documentary.
Thanks for the person who invented sighn language
It actually came from France to America
Mr. Hungry A lot no problem
It wasn't a single person. There are many different sign languages and they each have a different history. They develop naturally any time enough deaf people are together. E.g. some sign languages actually started in schools for the deaf where there were no teachers that knew any kind of sign language. They would try to teach deaf kids to speak or to read and write or to do trades, but the deaf kids spent so much time together they started sharing their own gestures and eventually everyone in the school was using them and younger kids would learn them from older kids when they started school. Other sign languages evolved when there was a community that had a very high percentage of deaf people. It's like spoken languages though in that no one really 'invents' a language usually. It's just something that happens when humans spend time together.
As other commenters said, ti wasn't one person. however, gallaudet is a figure to look up to and most likely started a chain reaction to led to programs like this.

What happened to Patrick? Also it just made me happy when Patrick smiled.
I found an update video for him! ruclips.net/video/5f31_UbCPq4/видео.html&ab_channel=Channel4
There used to be a video in YT edited to include only the Patrick parts, plus a clip where he signed (very clumsily and with narrow vocabulary, though, as he had been in the Sign Language course only for couple of days yet) that he wants to become a teacher when he grows up so he can teach deaf children
His skin is just so flawlessly beautiful!! I cannot stop looking at him how beautiful he is.. After seeing his first smile, my heart just opened even wider... I would LOVE to learn sign language.. Really thought about teaching myself.. After watching this, I'm definitely going to do it...
This is why I want my husband to win the lottery.. He plays those ones with the numbers.. I don't care about living a life of luxury or carrying around a damn Prada.. I just want to help.. I just want to help so many people because I would just take their suffering so that they didn't have too! I've always been this way, my husband says that's what he loves so much about me but, I get so frustrated because I really can't do anything because MONEY is EVERYTHING!!!
Swnsasy _ you could always run a fundraiser. Name something you’re good at. Hold an event to teach people what you’re good at or have a “ladies night” doing something you enjoy. Donate the proceeds to a legitimate non-profit organization that gives money to these kids for education.
Or as an alternative (idk how finances work in your household lol) you could tell your husband that for a year, instead of buying lottery tickets (like if he bought one every day on his lunch break), instead put that money into a donation jar. You could do that to. Like instead of buying your favorite soda everyday or something, put that money into the donation jar instead. 💁🏽♀️ Just some ideas! Every single penny counts. I think people get overwhelmed by the idea of charity and feeling inadequate to these rich people who write a $50,000 check. We all cant do that and it’s okay. And if money is still that tight, you could always reach out to the organizations to ask how you can help if you can’t give financially!
Oh also you can write off donations on your taxes too. That shouldn’t be an incentive but it helps for some lol.
@@BriannaTerese These are EXCELLENT IDEAS!!!! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm definitely, DEFINITELY going to find something like this!!

It is amazing to see how they learn it and how much they are willing to give it a try! I am so impressed by people there with limited facilities but still trying their best to do the education work! I went to an deaf school last semester for some tour as a educational student in Sweden. There everyone gets very good care of but still I think everyone in Uganda has the same level of stunning points just as these kids and teachers in Sweden.

I think it would be good to put closed caption on here for the whole video so everyone can watch it ...considering it is a film about deafness 🙃🙃
It does have CC. Look for the CC button
No it doesn't. It has auto-generated captions which are buggy and weirdly timed. A show coming from Channel 4 should have the budget to add subtitles to its youtube uploads.
The fact that Patrick looked so dejected and depressed to smiling and laughing at his first lesson. Just brought tears to my eyes. And his father is so lovely and kind. He genuinely wants his son to communicate and to cinverse with him. That is love right there.
Seeing those children finally seeing that they too can communicate somehow, their faces just light up and bring a smile to your face.

This channel is one of the best channels I've discovered on RUclips. The documentaries are well made. You get to discover parts of the world that's rarely talked about in mainstream US news on a micro level. I was a little shocked it only has 133,000 subscribers. I think it should be 10 times that number. Loved this documentary. Keep up the great work.
Arie Fraiser this Channel is reposting things from a big U.K. TV station (channel 4). That is why it is high end and low followings. This station is the best of the U.K. imo.

A video about deafness without subtitles during voiceovers hmmm
Don't you think that deaf/ hard of hearing people would be particularly interested in this topic? A program like Unreported World would definitely have the budget to add subtitles and generally Channel 4 are amazing with accessibility - it just seems like a complete oversight at this stage.
Turn on the closed caption feature.
These are only auto-generated captions, which granted, are better than nothing, but really are not sufficient for those who rely on them.

Please teach the parents and their siblings basic sign language skills too! That will make their family life a lot better!!
My son is blind and has learning problems including autism which contributed to him being non verbal (he mumbles and make noises) but has no communication skills or understanding of what we are saying to him, which is really hard and frustrating for him. but seeing this boy who actually has the normal intelligence and abilities of your average person is very sad indeed. Knowing they'd (his caretakers/parents etc) would of been able to teach him is actually awful and just sad. His whole life not being able to translate or talk to anyone nor explain how he feels or what he needs etc I can't begin to imagine how hard that would be for him.
This was amazing. Seeing the joy on these kids faces after getting the opportunity to learn how to communicate was so heartwarming I'm so glad ppl are working to bring awareness to this in their country

every time that they start smiling i start crying im so happy for them i hope i can help someday
I never really thought about this. This is amazing. It’s really easy for as Africans living in capital cities and bigger towns to be ignorant to what a vast majority of our people go through. This is why this social media movement of 'Africans don’t live in huts and aren’t poor and hunger stricken’ really doesn’t sit well with me because um yes some of us do live in huts and there’s nothing wrong with that. A majority of our population lives below the poverty line which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as most of our people who live in the countryside live off the land.
I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. This is really eye opening 👏🏾

We need more people to understand sign language so that we can all communicate and get along.
Should be a module is every school instead of mental math
Good point. If people round the world would know a bit of signlanguage this could sometimes make a real difference in making deaf people join in.
I know sign language I learnt it in school. I’m actually proud that I know sign language as it helps people a lot I know I don’t know any other language

Oh man that got me, I cried.
Tricky Green I'm at work, tears are coming of my eyes and I'm trying so hard to stop them, they got me too...
I work at a Chipotle and a deaf man came in and ordered food today. Luckily (for the people who can’t sign- including me), he could point at what he wanted for most of his order, and I somehow understood that he wanted chips and queso? I’m the cashier, so you ask them for chips, drinks, sides, etc.The chips were easy, but It took a little longer for the queso. He wanted something to dip the chips in, and I only understood that he wanted queso when I saw him mouth “cheese”. I told my co worker to get queso, but she still pointed at the guac, and both the man and I shook our heads. He got his order and thanked us, we apologized to him, and he gave us a thumbs up. I downloaded an ASL app when I got home.
Caitlin Clarken I love chipotle 😍😍
Good for you :)
ASL is actually pretty fun and easy to learn I know it pretty well just in case I am in a situation like that
I used to work as a cashier too and deaf people would just write on notes what they wanted because it was easier that way.

Can you imagine how boring your life would be? I can't believe none of these children's parents had come up with an at home sign language; I think I'd kill myself if I had to live so lonely
Audrey Lukas they had, but it was just to get him to do things mostly.
Audrey Lukas I saw this and was just thinking that no matter how poor I was that I would not be content not to be able to speak to my child. I would have done something more to communicate but I do understand that many of these families may be under economic stress or lack education.
I think they get used to it. But its still sad.
They do sign to themselves ( a family)I think it was just a break thru for him to meet others like him and have a common language- part of this is Film making... just to say look what we did? He has a family who cares for him
@@atthismoment3006 His dad's signing was not meaningful or comprehensive. He mostly pointed to things in order to communicate work chores which he states in the documentary. He couldn't communicate any complex ideas. That was not any family sign language.
That smile means happiness!!
You know that frustrating feeling when you're searching for a word, but can't find it? Imagine life being like that, for 15 years. I once had an ASL teacher who was in her 70s. She grew up in a farm in Wisconsin and until she was seven and taken to a school for the Deaf, she didn't even know she had a name.
