I always assumed Makuta wanted to use the mask to SPEED UP time. Like the brainwashing process may've taken weeks or months or even years, and he wanted to make it happen overnight. Doesn't that make sense to anyone, or is it just me? He even says "WITHOUT the mask, it will take a lifetime's journey," implying he wanted the quick and easy route.
The reason that the matoran don't react to the Vahki is because Nuparu, an Onu-Matoran engineer, created them. Dume manipulated him to turn them into a secret police.
7:46 That's especially egregious since Nidhiki is a former Toa of Air. You'd think he'd recognize Chute-Speak. Krekka being fooled makes sense considering he's dumber than a bag of rocks.
Wow. I forgot how useless the Mask of Time was in this movie. Luckily, it became one of the best plot macguffins in the series in Time Trap. In defense of this movie as a whole, the Toa Metru get more development than the Nuva got in Mask of Light. Also, when you talked about the political undertones with Dume and the Vahki, you should have mentioned the 1984/Orwellian Vahki web animations. This really felt like I was watching a Nostalgia Critic episode.
+AceGreenLegend I'm sure it was a better MacGuffun in the actual stories, but yeah, it was worthless here. I did compliment the movie by mentioning that we did see these Toa develop, but that probably had to do with this being an origin story for these heroes, and Mask of Light was treated as a continuation of that branch of the story, so we missed out on most of the Toa Mata's arcs. I didn't see the Vahki web animations before making this video, and I do agree that it could have helped the review a bit. Maybe a 'Hail Hydra' joke could have been thrown in there. Glad you enjoyed it, and good to know that I captured the Nostalgia Critic feel for this review. Chances are he'll never cover these films, and even if he does, I'm happy to provide an alternative. Look forward to the Web of Shadows review in a couple weeks, after I finish the Skullgirls countdown video.
+TransformersFanCo328 A "hail hydra' joke really? I mean would it have been necessary? The Vahki were more like a secret police rather than a nazi splinter division. And I can definitely feel like you are trying a bit too hard to emulate NC, and although he's pretty much devolved in my eyes, I can see you doing so much better. But I won't lie that my older videos are akin to his style of reviews, it's just that trying to be like another reviewer doesn't feel like you're giving a genuine review. it feels like you're pretending to be one. Don't take this the wrong way, I know that you're still trying to find your footing, I know I am, but it would be cooler to see you have your own identity as a reviewer. Food for thought my friend.
The Mask of Time was more powerful in 2003, and you have to assume that Vakama's not that good at using mask powers at this point. Because Makuta's plan was to accelerate time and get his plan finished faster.
Although the movie didn't really make the latter point clear, I suppose that need for the Mask of Time still makes a lot of sense, as does Vakama's inexperience.
+TransformersFanCo328 Yeah. The various comics and novels explain it all it greater depth, but your criticism stands for the film - we're never shown the value of the Mask of Time. it was used as a time-stop device in 2003, during the Bohrok-Kal Strike
+TransformersFanCo328 I wasn't trying to criticize, sorry if it came across like that. I have to say, it's great seeing someone really properly review these films :)
It's not a problem. I always appreciate learning where I mess up to improve for future projects, but I suppose your point was more a 'correction' then an actual criticism. Still, glad you seem to have otherwise enjoyed my video!
This was actually the first BIONICLE movie I saw, and still think it is actually the best one. I really liked Metru Nui as a setting; it felt more sci-fi.
Awesome review! Makuta isn't actually talking to himself in that one scene. That guy is just called "the shadow", I guess. He is the mysterious boss of the dark hunters and yeah, that big head destroys the possible plot twist.
How much of a plot twist would it have been if it were really the Shadowed One, the leader of the Dark Hunters? It would make sense of why two of his highest ranking members would be employed to a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta.
well, its not that vakama gave the mask of time to makuta, he actually used it to fight against him. So he wasnt actually helping his goals. the reasons why he crafted it are to fulfill his task he began as matoran and to have a powerfull weapon in order to fight makuta (little he knew that he wouldnt be able to control it)
Thank you, but I do appreciate the criticism/corrections as much as I do the compliments. I'm human at the end of the day, and sometimes things slip past me. Thanks for enjoying the video regardless!
its kind of ironic, you know? makuta is the one who has tasked vakama with crafting that mask, and in the end inspired vakama to use it against him. god I miss bionicle...
I think when Duma talking with Makuta it was actually the real Duma. I think he was serving the Makuta, until Makuta didn't need him anymore. So makuta betrayed what ever alliance they made off screen. But that just what I piece together. The comic books for this era of bionicle tell the story better then the movie.
Probably because of the fact that the 2004 Makuta in the movie is the Mask of Light Makuta before his wings were burned off by the shadowed one for killing his lieutenants (Krekka and Nidhiki)
oh-NEE-wah is indeed the canon pronunciation. It's just that so many people have fallen for the "Onua" / "O-new-a" confusion, and this movie is partly to blame for that, that it's hard to get out of the system again now. I always thought, if you do insist to pronounce it as if it were English (as if it contained the word "new"), why not just go all the way and call him One-wa (1-wa)? 😂 I'm not joking - I've actually heard somebody call him that way.
Really the mask of time have to look more like a mouth guard. And the toy version can't put on any toa unless you take their mask off then you can put it on. But it looks way worse
Holy crap, talk about unfortunate timing. We just got some of the earlier scenes from this movie... ruclips.net/video/jV3yc-JHr-4/видео.html It probably wouldn't have had much of an effect on the review, but in hindsight, the final scene didn't make any sense: "Metru Nui was DESTROYED!" - While the storm used in the final cut is closer to the climax of the film and is effective for conveying the point, it always bugged me growing up... maybe the scene was cut due to 9/11 parallels? I hope I'm not the only one that reacted as such, but the inner 5-year-old in me cried and had nightmares when I watched the original scene.
+AceGreenLegend Yeah, holy shit. I do think the original scene would have been more effective, but as you said, the final version was fine enough. It was interesting to see some cut content.
the Vahi (mask of time) ain't realy used like it can be in this movie, in the comics we see Tahu using it to stop time around the boroc kall... well we know that it was made hoppeless because of the silver krana invulnerability, but still the mask of time has the power to end the matoran universe if destroyed.

I've seen confirmations from Greg that this was the case. The movie just didn't explain how the mask and Matoran sphere plots were connected.
I still approve of this movie.
The reason that the matoran don't react to the Vahki is because Nuparu, an Onu-Matoran engineer, created them. Dume manipulated him to turn them into a secret police.
13:44 "It's official - you suck."
I almost died laughing. XD
Vakama was voiced by Alessandro Juliani, English dubbed voice of L from Death Note.
7:50 the weird thing is the voices fit so well.
7:46 That's especially egregious since Nidhiki is a former Toa of Air. You'd think he'd recognize Chute-Speak.
Krekka being fooled makes sense considering he's dumber than a bag of rocks.
The water pipe as you called it is actually a canal of Protodermis held in place by a magnetic field.
I still love the movie for nostalgic reasons, but I already saw the flaws that you illuminated so well. Nice review!

@@TheUltimateZMAN Yeah, the Vahki were more like the Dai Li from Avatar but as robots instead of Earth Benders.
Nidihki used to be a toa of air, part of Toa Lihkan's team of Toa Mangai. And Vakama is voiced by Alessandro Juliani.

And I saw Nokama, Matow and Onewa give Vakama the stink eye.
This was actually the first BIONICLE movie I saw, and still think it is actually the best one. I really liked Metru Nui as a setting; it felt more sci-fi.

I AGREE WITH YOU ITS NOT YOUR FLIPPING FAULT!!! AND I THINK THE WAY YOU PRONOUNCE THE TOA METRU OF STONE’S NAME IS (AH-NO-WHA)
Also Makuta would've sounded so fucking intimidating if he was played by Tony Todd. He is so terrifying as Zoom.
+TheUltimateZMANREVIEWS
Wait, THAT's who voices Zoom? I knew he sounded familiar!
Yeah dude. The fallen may have been a crap character in Transformers 2, but his voice was amazing.

the reasons why he crafted it are to fulfill his task he began as matoran and to have a powerfull weapon in order to fight makuta (little he knew that he wouldnt be able to control it)
In addition, while he crafted it vakama saw a vision of him using the vahi to fight makuta. it was his destiny to craft and use it.
Ah, that explains it. Thank you, and now I will be adding that to my ever-growing list of fuck-ups.
loved your video anyway :)
Thank you, but I do appreciate the criticism/corrections as much as I do the compliments. I'm human at the end of the day, and sometimes things slip past me. Thanks for enjoying the video regardless!

No, Teridax simply knocked out Dume (and yes, that is how his name is spelled), and took his place.
I never under stand why Maktua looks different than the toy
Probably because of the fact that the 2004 Makuta in the movie is the Mask of Light Makuta before his wings were burned off by the shadowed one for killing his lieutenants (Krekka and Nidhiki)
Ya know that the mask of time is dangerous in the books, hell, if you break it, you basically throw time and space outta wack

was this a prequel to the first movie?
yes

You like megaman and bionicle both!
You need to read the comics and books to get some of the plot of the film
makuta is hoodini
kkkkkk this thumbnail its so cool kkkkk
I'll be honest, the Steven Universe joke was actually pretty funny, but in a super corny way.
Give lekian mask to jaller
lol southpark.
makuta is hoodini
