Hi Steve I’m interested in investing and selling Pokemon cards, but want to avoid the same mistakes I made with US sports (breaks, rips etc to gather inventory and trying to jag bigger cards). 1. If you had $1000 to kickstart an eBay page, what would you spend it on to get a good start and a higher chance of repeatable sales early on? 2. Is there anything I should avoid? 3. Are the English cards easier to sell and more profitable than the Japanese or vice versa? I’ve been binge watching your RUclips videos, awesome source of information and experience for noobs like me and I’ve applied some of nuggets of wisdom to my sports card sales with positive results. Love what you’re doing! Thanks
Question for the next video - how do you deal with burnout? How do you separate your work life with your personal life, especially working from home? :)
Hi Steve, thanks for your insights as always. Just to add on a bit about negotiating in Japanese stores, having lived there for 4 years It's definitely not uncommon to negotiate in Japan if you are prepared to speak & negotiate in Japanese, this is also usually a lot easier in smaller cities that are co-owner run outside of Tokyo and Osaka.
Do you follow a specific naming scheme for listings? I've been looking at my active listings and focusing on keywords in the title. Do you just try your best to make the title make sense? Have you noticed keywords and titles play much into sales?
Another question. Did you notice once you hit a specific number of listings sales occured more often ? Do you try and keep a consistent or specific number of listings on your store at all times and if so does this even make a difference ?
Hey Steve! How do you handle getting a large amount of cards that you know will take a long time to list to get the full value from? I am not necessarily talking about genuine bulk (ex: less than $1-2 per card) but I've bought a few large collections recently where for example its like I pay $5,000 for the collection, get ~20 cards I can grade or sell raw to make my money back, but the "profit" is 1,000-2,000 cards that range from $2-$5. I've been buying a lot of these recently and have worked myself into a backlog of about 12,000 listable cards. I work a full time demanding job (I'm an accountant) for about 65 hours a week, and then I list on eBay for about another 40-45 a week and target to get 200 cards listed per day. Part of me says I should just bulk up a bunch of those cards and sell them for less than they are worth to someone else just to get some money back and buy more, but a stubborn part of me wants to keep all of them and list them to achieve maximum return. How do you handle huge backlogs of cards? Sorry for the long question!
For next ask Steve: does it make sense once you have a good sales volume of $1 or less items to start increasing the average price of items you sell or net profits of items. Does it also make sense to start using profits to buy increasingly valuable items for your personal collection? At first everything is for sale, then you find some $5 cards, then $15 and so on that you want to keep.
How is grading less work? Inspecting over and over, it’s already eating at your money to grade (work) and all the time to ship-return (time is money, work). The reward seems like a lot more stress, especially with new sets or interest fading while waiting for cards to return.
I guess its less work for the dollar amount you can achieve. But when you say it like that, grading does have more work, time and money involved upfront.
Hey Steven, I hope you're doing well! In one of your videos you said that you decided that you wanted to snatch up a bunch of Dragonite promos; how/when do you determine that you want to fixate on buying a certain card? Do you do this for a majority of your purchases or do you mainly just buy premium bulk? Are you always choosing certain cards to buy? If so, are you using any sources to find out variables such as the current popularity for the particular card etc?
Hey Steve, I want to thank you for all your content. My question is….do you sell bulk boxes of Pokémon cards? they usually come with 4,000 cards and have some rares and reverse, regular holos…
i love ebay the only thing is certain people will continuously low ball you and i’m just like there’s so many other listings and other places if you wanted it for that price why don’t they just give up on my listing and find it somewhere else for the price their looking for gets a little irritating
If you had to move to another city/town in Australia? Where would you go, and why is it Sydney? :) Has the recent price increases from Australia Post impacted your singles store? They are approaching $5/green envelope. :(
How does someone sell low value singles on eBay and not lose money on postage? Should postage be charged on every single card or is there a better way to do it? Would you still use green envelope if someone just buys 1 x $2 card for example or go cheaper? Thanks for sharing your knowledge as always!
29:18 - is this legal? I only ask because many Japanese sellers explicitly state that they will not under any circumstance do this. Perhaps it is a grey area of sorts? (I really hope you don't interpret this as judgmental or anything - I am just uneducated).
Hi Steve-o. Hope you're feeling better. I started reselling in October of 2023 with about 200$ cash and a few items from my PC. How do you manage patience as you continue to grow? I'm up to now purchasing 500-1000$ lots and flipping for smaller margins but margins none the less. #imnotpatient
Hey Steve I’m trying to become a PSA approved dealer (located in USA) but I need to spend at least $50k per year just in grading fees. How would you recommend hitting this number? Middleman services? Grading any ultra rare? I usually only spend like $5k per year on grading but I can obviously scale it to spend more if necessary. Thank you!
You are just such a legend man I look forward to every single upload on your channel and just want to express a sincere thank you for all of your hard work and friendly demeanor. Bless you may you and your family always be healthy!
Before I knew what I was doing, my first Fusion Arts booster box from Japan to Canada was $80 ish off ebay - only for FedEx to show up at my door and demand something like an extra $45 or something. It is so exploitative how they charge you the fees, as well as a fee for paying the fees that you didn't even know you existed until they showed up. Inconsistent enforcement as well just makes the water so muddy,
