Nothing is wrong with YOUR child not wearing shoes. Millions of farm kids have grown up barefooted, as did I, all summer long. People need to stop their butting into your business, raise your children the way you want. You go Crusoe…be free! The haircut is adorable. ❤

Tara, the garden is looking fantastic! I love your makeshift water system-don’t be embarrassed. You’re quite smartly using what you have (slopes, trenches like makeshift/pseudo swales) Obviously it’s too cumbersome to keep up with, but it’s a great stop gap until you figure it all out.
I live in an arid climate and this is my 4th year gardening…I’m just this year getting irrigation dialed in and have finally figured out the importance of heavily mulching my beds. You can use use straw, wood chips, compost, leaf mold collected from beneath your shaded trees or any combination of these as you can find them! I’ve been shocked at just how *drastically* doing so has cut down on the frequency and amount of water needed. Best of luck! An amazing first year garden!

Investing in more pipe might seem difficult but running out of water is life threatening. An irrigation system which you could also put on a timer!! Freeing you up would be so beneficial and well worth investigating. Keep on being brave and thinking big!! You are all amazing ❤

Hello all, in Canada for my garden, we have put soaker hoses through out the garden (vegetable & flower beds and established plants). These are on timers, 15 min in morning and 15 min in evening. We are so conscious of water restrictions that this schedule has saved my plants through the worst sunny stretches and the initial cost of the hoses is so worth it, not to mention piece of mind when we are away. Just a thought of another option for you. 🇨🇦 good luck

Well done Newbies. 🏡

A wise permaculture teacher said "you'll over estimate what you can do in your first year and blown away by the 5th year" you have set some great bones for that achievement ! Pleasure to see - well done. To reduce water use try mulching your vegetable beds with anything you can get your hands on, straw, newspaper, wood chip & to keep that compost moist put a piece of carpet or cardboard on top - mimicking the natural forest conditions where no soil is exposed and microbes happy doing their valued work. I have enjoyed and been inspired by you since your first van build and copied the rear kitchen idea in my own van. Your get up and go attitude serves you well, setting a wonderful example for your kids and some real genuine content for your online family too . 😊

From developing a perfect balance to properly form every foot's muscle, walking barefoot has endless benefits that even most high-tech shoe not only can't provide, but above all rather erodes. Seeing what you are teaching your children makes my heart smile.

You might need to put a Dutch door (the kind of door that is split & you can just open the top or the bottom) in your kitchen. As smart as John is, he could probably figure a way to just do it with the door you already have there. If the reason you leave it open is for Crusoe & you choose to split your door, put a gate closing on the bottom part that he just pushes & the door opens. That way the chickens might not get in your house. Just an idea.

In my experience, It’s good to be connected to earth through our bare feet - there’s a natural current that helps with our our own bio current - called grounding. As a kid from Africa, I didn’t wear shoes for a long time. My daughter was the same. Actually some kids get really sweaty feet quite easily. So airing them helps to ensure they don’t develop problems. I agree Tara - kids going barefoot does help with proper development of their feet. When Daisy started going to high school she had to wear closed toed school shoes with laces, she started develop problems in her feet - they weren’t very supportive school shoes and she had to have physio and inserts. We both still take our shoes off every chance we get.
Love the names of your chickens!!
I miss having sadza - yummy! Nothing like eating it with your hands with some beef and gravy. Hope you get the water issue resolved soon.

You have the watering system absolutely right! Eventually you can build a system of gates and weirs perhaps. I live in New Mexico where water is scarce. Those farms along side the Rio Grande have ‘water rights’ overseen by a community administrator, who schedules a rotation of weekly flooding of properties. They open and close sluices along the ditches fed from the main river. The farms have developed ‘waffle’ gardens. Keeping the water in channels. So you see, you’ve mastered an ancient watering technique with your system.
PS local farmers generally get away with flooding the whole garden once a week - maybe that’ll simplify it for you.

Ahhh the joys of childhood outdoors. I use to walk barefoot all the time and adopt little criters 🙈 I think we all go through that phase.
My greatnan had free roaming chicken, but she built nests for them in wood boxes full of hay. They need to be protected (not exposed) and higher up to make sure something (like a fox or prey birds) doesn't easily reach them and gets into the habit of eating them. That could be a fun new project. Maybe put a couple in different places where they hang out the most? You need to put some food in there for a bit, to get them to notice them I think. And check their over night "house" for eggs too 😅

Connecting with the earth through grounding has so many health benefits. It improves sleep, reduces pain, inflammation and stress. Improves mood and emotional balance, immune system, heart health. It promotes healing in the body.
Since they created rubber soles instead off leather or wool, we have been disconnected from earths free flowing electrons.
Get back to earth u guys, by doing some earthing just like Crusoe 🥰
