Moving Trucks Have Become Hot Targets for Thieves: Cops

- Police are warning people who have rented moving trucks and vans that their property could be targeted by thieves. With so many people having moved during the pandemic, authorities say brazen crooks have started stealing marked moving vehicles, not for the vehicles themselves, but for the contents inside. Don Reid and Miranda Jestice tell Inside Edition they were moving from Alaska to Florida when the truck they were using to transport their belongings was stolen from a Washington hotel parking lot.
I feel so bad for the people who have gone through this but specially for the parents who lost their baby’s ashes 😔🙏🏻

How low can someone go and take ashes with them-my goodness. God bless the parents! I’m so sorry
@@beautifulibra SICKENING!
its equally bad... no party has it worse then the other. People dont value what the loss is when you lose objects you own. They may not have lost a person but they had their truck stolen with their things. If people cant see the magnitude behind that.
Stealing someone's childs ashes makes thieves true pos that deserve the worst.

UHaul should be offering the steering wheel locks for free if this is so common because of their old trucks.

I'm moving this summer. This is really scary and my heart goes out to everyone who's had to experience this 💔
Steering wheel lock will be enough detterent for a theif looking for a quick steal. Sawing one of those off takes a good 15 mins or so.
park the truck in a way that makes it difficult. get a hardened steel lock. spend money on the lock, also the GPS thing is a very good idea, aswell as the steering wheel lock.
Also get the strap
sleep in the front with a shotgun!!!!
If you're driving another vehicle with your truck, back the truck up as close as you can to a light post or concrete barrier or tree and then park your personal vehicle as close as you can to the front of the truck. That way if they try to steal it they'd have to push your car out of the way with the truck and someone will probably hear or see it and can get the cops there as soon as possible. That's probably the best free / easy way to go. Also probably should buy the best theft insurance from Uhual that they offer if they offer any. It won't replace the priceless stuff but it will replace everything else.
Oh my gosh my heart truly breaks for that young couple. I hope somehow someday they can get their sons ashes back, or at least have something made to memorialize him and take the place of the urn in their home. 💔💔

Criminals working hard coming up with new crimes every day instead of getting a job
I assume that once ur in a gang of bad people that either 1. You can't leave. Or 2. You don't have the means to leave.
@@mzywica Or they're just terrible people
i assume they did the crime and getting a job both together
It's easy to say that if you didn't grow up in a household that was struggling to put food on the table. It's not as easy as "Get a job" when even 12 hours a day won't pay for rent or healthcare.
To all the poor people who were robbed, my hart goes out to you. I hope anyone caught stealing trucks like this should do double time when they're caught. I hope all these people still had their house insurance and not just moving insurance.
Those poor victims will still march against cops chanting BLM...and police brutality....🤣🤣🤣🤣
i feel like they should have built in trackers on all there vehicles
That would be terrible for privacy, better to just get your own tracker
Uhaul has over 170,000 trucks that rotate out of service often. By the time they put trackers in the trucks it would be time to replace the fleet.
@@BuildTimeMC how would a built in tracker for a rented truck be bad
@@razor6827 because they can track you wherever you go and they can sell it or get hacked and all that information is public
@@BuildTimeMC So people can track you using smart devices like a watch or your phone.
Stress is already sky high when you moving. Your past is literally behide you and your future is unknown. Your possessions of something small like shoes to something unreplacement like loved one's ashes. Everything about you and your family in one van. The audacity of the thieves.
I wonder if homeowners insurance even covers this stuff if it’s stolen when you’re moving homes? Did they even have insurance yet? How awful to even be in that position.
uhaul truck is not a home. i had a huge fire at my home it took years fighting w the insurance company and finally got about 25 percent of what i was owed.
Selling everything in Alaska and taking a flight would have saved them more money and time than driving to Florida.
Selling everything...not everything has a price tag you know?
To thieves everywhere, I pray you all one day know what it's like to have something taken away from you.
Their lives.
That fact of intentionally opening boxes and collecting goods and dumping the furniture on the floor is just so awfully wicked, the couple must be having a hard time. I hope they don’t experience this again.
Dang, more people have gone drunkenly insane these days. Looks like every hotel needs to build high security garages for those moving trucks. Even longer garages if a truck is towing a trailer.
Not hotels. It's on Uhaul, other moving rental companies. How the hell they not fitted w/ GPS yet? And that steering wheel lock could be provided. Or customers be given the option for it , why aren't they educating customers on safety measures. It's all just so sad.
Kudos to Inside Edition for covering this and also giving us tips on how to prevent them from happening 👏
It is kind of amazing how the "land of the free" has literally become "the land of the criminals" during the pandemic... A very concerning development indeed.
It’s only going to get worse. The justice system needs to be replaced. More strict punishments will result in less crime

A person isn't their body. It's morbid and weird to keep ashes anyways. It's like a cemetery where you live.
Forced labor for offenders as well as longer sentences would make a difference.
We didn’t put the tracking device in the truck (you haul is insured), we put tracking devices in our most expensive belongings.
So even if they take them, the device was in it and we can track the item down.
It would help in recovery, the police ask how long they owned it, if they knew me/us, then have them explain how that tracking device got in to the item that they have had forever or a few weeks to months.
Then explain how it was stolen the night/days before.
Good idea

Well that’s what happens when all we do is just lock and release. You can’t end a roach problem just by catching and placing it out side your house.
The ashes part was the funniest. Especially when the dad was crying.

So devastating how can people be so cruel

you can find hundreds in sonora mexico, we see them everywhere.
So what happens if you rig a shotgun trap inside a uhall and park at random hotels. As long as you hide your identity well and it is successful criminals will get caught in the blast when they steel and you will be doing the world a favour. Could also be less devastating like a paintball gun or tear gas launcher which goes off if the uhall is opened. might deter criminals, just make sure you use a fake id at the hotel to not get caught.
I live by I-40 in texas.....and this happens just about everyday. It is soooo sad!!! We have traffic going from west to east coast...and they normally stop here and soon regret it.
Driving from Alaska to Florida...now that's a road trip!
Maybe, there should be something like a digital car lock. Not like a car key, it's like another type where it locks the wheels, making them unable to move even if the car is on. I feel like that'd work really well with a Tesla, as their futuristic technology could make it function like if one digital lock was assigned to the car, & it could go on something around the words of "optional wheel activation per __ proximity". If you lost that car key, you could possibly recover it using a Tesla app (if it already exists), by using some kind of code that you hopefully know, if your phone gets stolen, you can do a 4-5 digit long lock to enter the digital lock thing, or manually deactivate that person's ability to mess with your car trough some proof. If you lost the digital car lock, you can also contact some workers at Tesla, & with enough proof, they can give you the car key.
Anything digital can be hacked. And can be shut off romotely. Very dangrous territory. Tesla has already threated to turn off a tik tokers telsa because they didnt agree with the video
the problem is it would cost uhaul an assload of money they dont care to invest, long as they get their truck back they dont care
when i helped my cousin move from NJ to FL, it was a convoy of 3, we would box the truck in, his wife car and his car on either side or one side up against a wall. you would have had to work for it.
The struggle is real!!
I thought there was a fly on my screen at 1:30 when I saw that black dot on that guys head, it was the mouse cursor 😂😂😂
It's not a bad idea to put a boot on the wheel as well.
Uhaul needs to update their trucks. Lol.

Use AirTag/s. Put it in a package. It will give the law enforcement the time they need to locate the truck in real-time.
when you’re sleeping they can steaI the truck and by that time they already got thru your belongings… airtag to Iocate the truck after they stoIe it lol?
they should add something to the truck like a sterling wheel lock or something that you can’t start the truck. or just like tesla, you can’t get into the car without your phone or key. if you break into it, you will be recorded and then get a notification what’s wrong with your car so the poIice can be called, ( not sure if it does call automatically if someone is breaking in tho)
@@beaualIoevv I agree. What I meant is to locate the vehicle immediately once it was stolen. Like the incident happened in the story where the security guard chased the culprit but couldn’t catch him. Police couldn’t locate the vehicle either as he had already removed the built-in gps.
