Gay Life and The Enlightenment | Sir Noel Malcolm: The History of Homosexuality (4/4)

- In this lecture, Sir Noel Malcom makes the case that there was not a sudden surge in homosexuality after The Enlightenment, instead it was a continuation of practises which had always existed. Historians should consider the history of Europe and sexual exploration outside of Florence, as the focus on this area to the determent of others has led to many having been misled.
The book upon which these lectures were based, has been nominated for the 2025 The Duff Cooper Prize. It can be purchased here:

Very interesting lecture, really enjoyed it. I find this topic so interesting and thank any historian working in it. Makes me happy that homosexuality is finally seen as a serious topic for historical research.
A deeply illuminating series of lectures (and a yet more impressive book). Noel Malcolm untangles so much that is otherwise perplexing in the historical record and provides a much more plausible starting-point for mapping this important aspect of the past. He achieves what few historians ever do and helps us to understand the human condition a little better.
Loved this series. Glad to hear a good plug for the work of James Davidson. But it has made the past four weeks a delight to have the next lecture on the horizon to look forward to,
A most illuminating series of lectures that has broadened my understanding of the history of homosexuality and its evolution.
What breathtakingly brilliant scholarship. Thank you, Sir Noel.
Proof that, at least in Britain, good old fashioned scholarship of the classic type still goes on and is as relevant as ever. Whether or not anybody pays attention is of course another matter entirely. Thank you so much Sir Noel for a brilliant and enlightening series!!
Thank you for this video. I appreciate any content that shows how we have always existed. I've read the work of Rictor Norton called The Myth of the Modern Homosexual, and I love anything more I can learn. Please continue posting.
From the beginning of time till the end of time.
I'm amazed that there has been no reference to the fact that one of the major differentials between Southern and Northern Europe (including marriage arrangements) in the "early modern period" is the difference between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.
For Noel Malcolm, the North includes the non-Protestant Paris and the South includes the non-Catholic Morocco
What was the role of the cabin boy on sailing ships in past centuries?
Or the boys who were assigned to sleep in the same room as a male guest. We are told that they were watch-dogs, but this seems odd.
Room service?
@@Leftatalbuquerque Cheeky.
What an illuminating series of lectures that progresses the understanding of homosexuality in history? Thank you
I recommend Dynes' "Encyclopedia of Homosexuality" (tour-de-force), and Sir Malcom's recent volume.
As a young gay man I am honored to be able to learn about our history.
What about the patterns in eastern, northeastern even Scandinavian Europe?
What about New France?
Very enjoyable series from Sir Noel. I would love to see him tackle the Catholic Church and the reality of their land and building assets....ie the largest and most wealth real estate group in the world?!
How I would like to hear of a gay or Lesbian pastor !
It’s been fascinating for me to look at my own background in Utah among Mormonism. This was a shocker of a lecture given at the University of Utah. The Mormon church never even had used the term “homosexual” anywhere until the 1960’s.

What Sir Noel doesn’t really address is that there is a very wide gap between tolerance snd practice of oral sex between men, and the huge step taken to arrive at anal sex. Anal sex by otherwise straight men is purely a power play, an expression of dominance that treats boys as simulacra of women, who were subservient to males. Oral sex, and mutual masturbation, on the other hand, are mutual pleasures, enjoyed by both parties, often men of similar ages. It is a very large step to move from oral sex, a mutual pleasure, to anal sex, which is an expression of domination.
Can you recommend sources?
When I lived in the South, oral sex was much more common than anal sex.
Using christian terms like sin, ..'of the flesh', mortal sin etc is off
😅guess Alexander the Great did not exist, died of a broken ❤to another Man
Right out the gate poor scholarship. “definitely” is not a word responsible historians use 2:22
Looking forward to queer scholarship dismantling this ❤
15:23 still trying to wrap my mind around a respected historian relying on the “absence of evidence means evidence of absence” argument. UnF’ing believable!!!! ESPECIALLY on a taboo subject in a notoriously private, and less libertine culture. His data will never reflect the reality of common life. His data ONLY reflects the historical record as HE was able to research! Recorded history only accounts for about .02% of humanity’s experiences. To be clear, and to correct this lecture: without doubt there was adult man to man desire acted on throughout Northern Europe. It happened at a similar rates to southern Europe, and at similar rates as today. That’s a law of uniformitarianism. We are the same species that existed then.
yikes. He compares Iberian colonies to the English colonies without mentioning the disparity in population size: at it’s highest (1624-1723) Spanish and Portuguese colonies
26:54 more arguments of "absence of evidence is evidence of absence!" appalling
27:27 a claim contradicted by your own presentation's data & simple math for a period of 99 years 1624-1723 *facepalm
And this is why the ones who new but never informed the real concerned person encouraged it and even help the misleader go longer and longer in time with the mistreatment and the lie because at the end their intention was to invade and profit of every mistake or unseen thing of the other party and even make he appears as a woman in the long run.
Hey look! It's a fake Academic yapping about.
Hey, look! It's a troll.
@@Nai61a No just someone who points out a hack-fraud.
@@9and7 He is a highly respected historian at one of the great academic institutions of the world.
I would like to understand why you are so determined to tell yourself that Sir Noel is a "fraud". What's your beef here?
@@Nai61a You can read them yourself, they're easily available on the criticisms he receives regarding his books on the Balkans. Cherry picking his way across 'Kosovo: A Short HIstory' is perhaps the best example.
@ Ok, but the fact that people disagree with him does not make him a fraud or a hack. Moreover, Kosovo is not what he is dealing with in this series of lectures.
