I do container gardening with almost all my garden. I plant tomatoes, corn, potatoes, peppers, zucchini and other squash, eggplant , onions, garlic and even fruit trees. The size of the plant determines the size of the pot. I never use garden soil as it says right on the bag for in ground use. So, I was very surprised that is what you used. Miracle gro- the company - itself does not recommend garden soil for pots due to the possibility of soil compaction. Also depending on how dry or warm your climate is, garden soil won't usually have much peat moss or cocoa coir or perlite to help retain moisture in the pot. Plants in pots will dry out much faster than plants in the ground. It will be interesting to see how the plants do when the heat comes in the summer and how much you have to water them.
Get some 1/2 inch squares hardware cloth and a couple of 2 x 4s. Make yourself a soil sifter big enough to fit over your wheel barrel. This will help to break up the soil, remove any rocks and wood sticks and really get all of the clumps out of the soil. You'll be left with nice smooth soil to add your new fertilizers to.
One way to make fertilizer for your garden is to use pesticide free grass. When you cut your grass save it and make compost and compost tea. Saves money
Thank you for sharing your time, knowledge and lovely energy with us! I have no idea what I'm doing in my garden, but I love messing around and seeing what grows 😅. It may just be me, but come March- i go nuts for my seedlings! They get me absolutely giddy when they peek up through. Always learning good information with you!
Okay I want follow your steps in gardening but I am behind in my fall garden. This weekend is my starting time. Greens I guess will do for me. Next year I plan to do a better job. I have a flood damaged house so things got away from me. Thank you for reminding me about the fall planting schedule.
Hey Tee, nice job refreshing that potting soil and transplanting the squash! Do you trellis them to grow up or just let them grow out? I like the container idea for those and may try that this season. Thanks for sharing have a great weekend!
I see you be handling yo biness in the garden ha? Thanks for the video, cuz I was just thinkin how could I use my dirt from last year. Na I see. Thank ya Beautee.
I LOVE squash and zucchini but never thought about growing them in containers. 😮😁 I've been hesitant to plant directly into the ground because we have a groundhog that comes over from my neighbor's yard. This may work for me. Again, so glad that I came across your channel. You really do share the most helpful information. Can't wait to see more content and follow-up videos on your zucchini! 🤗🤗
just wondering if youve looked into one of those simple smaller turn by hand barrel composters to help improve soil? i have a bigger square commercial hopper and im thinking its way to big for me if i use kitchen scraps and such,i dont produce enough scraps. but im thinking i might just use browns like leaves and shredded cardboard and get the greens from grass clippings. and again thank you for the video:)
I cold compost and that has worked for you me. I have looked into one at Walmart. I think using the leave and grass clipping would be wonderful. That is what I use plus kitchen scraps. Thank you for your time!
The reason your soil is so compacted & heavy is because you’re using garden soil in containers. If you don’t want to buy potting mix try peat moss or coconut coir and then add your amendments. Your plants wont be so root bound.
I'm new to gardening veggies. Thank you for this video. I've started too many seedling of squash (not enough room in my little garden. I did plant excess tomatoes in large garden pots...so now I know I can do the same with my extra squash seedlings. 👍 Thank you!
Hi Tee, what size pot you are using? Thank for sharing how to repurpose old soil. I planted one squash in my raised bed last season and it got too big. I think a container is a great idea.your videos are so informative and with each one you learn something helpful. Thanks for sharing. Question: Do you can or freeze some of your harvest?
SAME!!! I Can't wait until we get better weather here in Zone 7!!!🍃🌿🌱 I had to cover up things & put some of my vegetables in my Sunroom😣. I'm in Maryland
What’s up fam?! I’m trying a very similar method to what you just did and I was wondering if you had any problems with squash vine borers doing it this way. They wiped me out last year so I’m hoping the change to the pots helps. Thanks for sharing as always and stay blessed! -Calvin
I love your channel! I have a couple of questions because your harvest is immaculate 😍 1- could you share your soil recipes for new planting in containers? 2- do you keep them in the containers the entire time or do they transfer to a bed?
I will have to do another video But here is a video on starting mix ruclips.net/video/WhXWYEGKpQU/видео.html And yes, I will be keeping them in the container the entire time ruclips.net/video/w7cO5WN07kM/видео.html Happy Planting💚 I hope this helps💚
Thanks for the demonstration. I don't know if I've asked this question before, but what do I do with soil in containers that had hornworms or ants? Do I pour peroxide and sterilize or throw away? Do I follow these same steps for a bed or just add compost and amendments?
On another great gardening channel, the person said to mix 2 gallons of water with Neem oil and mild dish soap and pour it into the soil, mixing it in. Or use Monterey BT in it. BT kills soft body pests. This works for grub worms, too. Then, amend your soil as usual. I hope this helps.
Hello, For the Ants If you have another ant colony mix them together they will fight to the death as far as the hornworm I would just spray for it or just remove them because it is a hawk moth I only have seen them at night but to take care of that I use BT spray your plant every three days. Thank you for your support Happy Planting.
