  • I figured the MLS Gaskets would let go at some point. But TBH I was hoping I would get some more life out of it.
The only real solution I've seen is Building another short block that accommodates proper Fire locks. and if we are building another Enigne I am doing the stroker kit that I always wanted to do. Although I still am on the fence about swapping a different engine in VS this. From a cost standpoint building another short block seems to be the most cost-effective route.

Building a 1 off full custom setup, you run into issues. But that's how you learn what works and don't. You got all the ground work done and now you know which way to go. It's still awesome as hell Tanner. I wouldn't of been able to do that for sure. Great build.

Thankfully it’s really just a short block swap if we really wanted to just do that. It’s not a crazy big deal but it’s definitely a pricey one. Since it’s coming out we’re just doing everything we can at this point to ensure it keeps a seal 🦭

Fire rings. Round .105” cut a groove in the head, and block. Allow for .007 crush never blow a head gasket again. Ever. This was my fix for the Subaru. Copied the Cummins fire ring. Absolutely perfect round groove. Allows for a tight seal and no chatter like the square fire rings do

I'm sorry to hear, man! I know how it is to build things and things not go the way that it's supposed to. I have two projects going on currently. That being said, you are literally the gateway to future builds like this. There are only a few EGs being pushed at such high levels, but none have massive followings like you do. You never know who could be watching your progress or what company could see potential in this engine to start offering aftermarket support. You are so close and already there. Definitely take a break from the car for a while. That's the best thing to do to clear your mind. Put your attention on your other cars, take a vacation, ease your mind. Keep at it man! If anyone can do it, it's you. You put so much passion into this project and it would be a shame for you to just scrap it. That...and you can't let the haters win, lol. Take care, bud! "I'm so over the problems at this point" It's almost like you took an engine and pushed it well beyond it's natural limits or something, weird. These things just come with the territory at this point, as I'm sure you're aware.
"I fix one problem, I get four more..." Amen... I'm in the same boat. My alternator blew a few weeks ago, got a new alternator in there last weekend, which required taking off the upper coolant hose & the fan shroud assembly, went to go bleed the system and the bleeder valve cracked in half as I touched it. Thankfully that is apparently a common enough issue to have a billet Dorman valve on the shelf at the auto part store.

I would say LS swap but then the car wouldn’t be that special anymore because that’s like the default engine swap. Unless it was a more unique LS engine and not just an LS3. Cool swaps I can think of are 2JZ, B58, 5.0 Coyote… idk. What I do know is the EG33 doesn’t really seem like it makes good power in general. Like all this work and you’re still only a bit above the power level you had in the WRX and that was just an EJ. I am curious how much of a difference the stroker kit would make though.

At the end of the day it’s really just a short block replacement with proper fire locks, it just gets annoying 😂 if we’re doing this again we’re just doing the 3.7L build 🔥

That sucks sorry man. Have a shop make you a custom fit head gasket maybe? IDK? At least you have the Porsche still running LOL. Maybe dial back to 890-900 HP and or a few less pounds of boost. put a built FA24 in it? The new WRX guys would love that content.

Why not build a EZ36? De-stroke it with the 3.0 crank will open the door for symmetrical connecting rods. Finish it off with twin turbos… this is a build idea I’ve had for a while. Why would this setup not work?

But BIGGG yes to a balls to the wall FA24. I had thoughts of swapping an FA24 into a STi! P.S: Is that a Varis hood or another brand like MSP? Thanks!

Tanner-Do you know about Cometic head gaskets? They are SS, multilayer and custom. Their MLX or HP gaskets should do the job. They are designed for your kind of situation. You can order any thickness you want. I am using them with ARP studs in my SVX 3.3 that I run in my VW Vanagon. They have to be ordered, they don't stock them for 3.3, but they have the dies. Worth a try--alot cheaper than another engine.

Part of car building! This is why its not for everyone 😁 I've spent so much on my built GSX that I could never sell it regardless of issues. Have you thought of a thicker head gasket like a 0.40 or 0.45
For most engines, we recommend the OEM gasket thickness. This will provide safe, reliable engine performance. Changing the gasket thickness should only be done when modifying an engine for high performance.

Props to finally getting running. I quit watching your videos some time back when you were doing your wiring harness….. your really seem to know your stuff….. I know this part is my opinion but are your racing this thing? Track use drag strip? Or just for a fun/interesting project? If it’s not needed maybe turn your boost down? Just having something this special I’d rather it be more reliable so you could enjoy it for longer….. but that’s how I feel

This may seem amateur, so i apologize if it does, but why not go EZ30r or EZ36r? Ik the later is a stroked version of the prior like the ej207 and ej257. But why stay with the eg33 if its discontinued, and you are already ripping all of that out?

I bought a Baja that had been rebuilt with ARP bolts. I drove it for 12k miles and then same symptoms as you. Turns out to be a cracked head bolt. Let us in know if you figure out why the head is lifting.

I feel ya man, the same I think about my car, so much $$$ down, just crossing my fingers and not having any tipe of f#ck!ng failure, shiiiet, I'd be trying to invest on a RB26 or a 2JZ-GTE if I blew it for a future swap

    Don’t 2jz swap it. I’ve seen a few of those in Subarus. I’ve seen a few different 4 bangers, a 2jz, skyline engine, a v12 but I’ve never seen a v10 in a Subaru. Just saying 👀

Tanner I'm sorry man, I'm right there with you. I just spent all of my savings and had to take out 2 loans to put a new motor in my STi, which I'm still paying for. Now, the loan payments are the same as my car payment. I took the car to a "subaru performance shop" for the block replacement, now the engine is ticking loud as heck and the shop wants more money to diagnose the issue and I'm flat broke trying to keep up with all the bills. The amount of stress, regret and depression I'm feeling right now is unreal. I should have never bought this car..

There is an old saying from owning a lot of Snap On Tools. Buy Once, Cry Once. I think this also applies to Blue.. Anything worth doing is worth doing the right way the 1st time without leaving any regrets on the table. Good move going to a Motec tho I'm wondering how a Fuel Tech would work out for you.. Good luck and keep the faith..
