This songs was written by Babyface near the beginning of his domination as a song writer from the late 80's through the 90's. He wrote hits for numerous artists like Bobby Brown, Pebbles, TLC, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Mariah Carey, New Edition, Johnny Gill, Karyn White, Toni Braxton, Mary J Blige, and Boys II Men, not to mention the hits he wrote for himself. There was literally a time in the 90's where you could not listen to an R&B radio station for an hour without hearing a song written by Babyface.
Yes, Babyface and L A. Reid were one of the best producers in the late 80's. Short after this hit they produced "Roses Are Red" recorded by Mac Band, good old times!
@Lori Stone I had some, but it paled in comparison to everyone around me. Being a musician, audiophile, and DJ, I chose, and played the music. As for band, I helped in the music arrangements. I wanted to be a band director. Shifts in school funding, as you know, squashed that.
The dance they where doing during the chorus ( rock, steady ) was actually a popular dance back in the 80’s called “ the rock” , we killed that dance🔥🔥🔥🔥😄
Thank you! I had forgotten about this tune. It’s one I have always loved. I just added it to my playlist. It appears you guys loved it too. At 74 years old, I gone through so much music and the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were the best. Music was music! Thanks!
I'm 65 and I remember Scotty and Walter but Rob Squad still haven't got that they're twins??? And they still Rocking steady to this day on Tour..👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽✌🏽
1987 was a really good R&B year! Alexander O'Neal "criticize", Keith Sweat "I want her" Although it came out in 86, Atlantic Star "Midas Touch" was blowing up dance floors too!
The rock was actually a dance from the late 70s disco era into the early 80s. You both picked up on it and both of you started to rock in your chairs. Basically the dance was rocking side to side on the dance floor. Michael Jackson had a song called Rock With You, It’s a banger! Check it out
Thank you for reacting to this ❤️. Please do more R&B from the 70s/80s/90s. Special request for the following groups: Mint Condition, Shalamar, En Vogue & Jade. **Also Keith Washington, please and thanks 😊
This song and LeVert's "Casanova" dominated black radio in Summer, 1987. A great year for music.. You should also check out a group named Surface. You're gonna love "Happy".
I've loved the Whispers forever, especially their song "LADY". I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with Lee Peters, one of their backup singers. He since passed away and now I feel like I hear his voice in every Whisper's song I hear. Rest in Heavenly Peace Lee Lee. We miss and love you 💜🙏
To this very day, this song by The Whispers is their biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! The song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Black Single chart and it peaked at the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1987. This song was a summertime banger indeed.
It’s one of the biggest examples of not hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 not meaning a damn thing in the long run. This song is a standard, and will never be forgotten.
Another great, funky song by The Whispers is "Keep On Lovin' Me". One of their best, underrated songs. This has another magnificent bassline for ya, Jay! 🎸🎹🎧😎
Jay, Amber, You guys are so blessed! You have a lot of baby boomers introducing you to some the greatest tunes from their era. I enjoy checking you guys out and look forward to new videos every evening. Rock On! Maybe I should have said Rock Steady! 😊
I always love seeing you guys grin ear to ear rocking to these tunes! for me this is one of the earliest examples of the "Boy Band" "Music Video" vibe the backup dancers, the audience, the stage choreography! all superb! really happy you got to choose this one finally! to hear more funk (not necessarily the Whispers) hear Sugarhill Gang's "Apache"
The lead singers are twins, the Scott brothers. While this is one of their biggest dance hits, they are also a soulful crooner group with a vast catalog of love songs. “Welcome into my dream” and “lady” just to name two. They have been cranking out hits since the early ‘60s. Another great dance hit with a banging base beat is; “Keep on loving me”. Jay, this one is right up your alley!
They started out in 1964, and didn't have their first national hit song "And The Beat Goes On" (#19 in 1979) for 15 years. This was their biggest, and last hit, reaching #7 in 1987. Great way to drop the mic on their career
I remember when this song came out every radio station had it on and everyone would be dancing to it... brought back some memories of the good 80's music boy do I miss tye 80's
80s Durban South Africa bus song llist blasted with 100 passengers packed in ,6x9 speakers ,subs.. 1. Midas Touch 2. It's that love thing 3. Trapped (colonel Abrams) 4. How could you not Rock and sway to this song. Even if you can`t dance, just follow the lyrics. I had a hard time driving with this song playing back in the day. Just don`t swerve into traffic LOL
One of my favorites! Thanks for bringing back great memories! Percy Sledge is an artist yall NEED to listen to! Out of left field is my favorite! Much love from Henderson Ga
By 3:23 those moves, began to sink into Y'all. They are irresistible. Cheesy? Yes, but irresistible. I, always, do the same dance, at the karaoke bar, when they play this video, no matter who's watching. That's the power of silk suits, and The Whispers.
Jay And Amber. If you love that song, Play "In The Mood" by The Whispers. Let's just say that song is like "The Secret Garden & Between The Sheets" combined.
Love this song! I’ve had this on my playlist since playlists were invented. I’ll never forget this song playing at the roller rinks!! So many great songs came out in the late 80s! Great choice guys!
Jay and Amber, a few more songs that will get you dancing in your chairs, Amii Stewart-Knock on Wood, Matthew Wilder-Break My Stride and Morris Day &the Time-Jungle Love.
This was a dance hit from 1987... thank you for the reaction. 😁 Another big dance hit from that year... I looked and I don't think you have done it yet but you just HAVE to have heard of the song... "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa. if you don't know the song you just HAVE to do it... it is a CLASSIC!!!! have a great weekend! 😃
I do wish they'd do some old school hip-hop. I know he grew up on rap, but I'm betting he didn't grow up with the rap WE grew up on. There's so many grooves they would love. We need like ONE rap day a week.. LOL
Just heard a great oldie I’m sure you’ll like. SWEET CITY WOMAN- The Stampeders. Everything you like, catchy rhythm, boinging bass, popping guitar, swirling vocals, swooning harmonies.. and killer cowbell.
The Whispers were one of the best R&B groups of the 80s along with S.O.S band, Kool & the Gang, Cameo, Midnight Star, and so many more who knew how to rock you on the dance floor. There is 1 song however that I feel you may love that came out in 1983 and it goes by the name, "Juicy Fruit" performed by a group called Mtume. I think both of you are awesome and I love watching your reaction videos. Keep up the great work you are doing.
Good luck getting on the dancefloor when this song came on ...I remember being at a club in Maryland and Sugar Ray Leonard was dancing right next me to this very song. OGs everywhere!
I've suggested "Fantastic Voyage" many times in the past. I also suggested the Funk classic "Funkin' For Jamaica" by Tom Browne and "Dazz" by Brick. No reactions yet to any of these cool funk classics.
This was my favorate from the Whispers. They also had another hit called "its A Love Thing" which came out in 1979 the same time as "And The Beat Goes On"
Amber & Jordan, First of all, Rip 🪦 to two ✌️of the Whipsers that passed away, Marcus Hutson & Nicholas Caldwell. U guys will never be replaced on the Whispers. Rock 🪨 Steady was a jam in the 80's n it was playing constanly in all radio 📻 stations. Memories of a lifetime. Thanks 🙏 for the reaction.
Just in case you haven't figured it out those are twin brothers Walter n Wallace Scott. Both are lead singers on all of the Whispers songs. They have some great ballads too.
Ran the Pocono Mt. Record Pool out of our apartment in Pittsburgh when we got a promo copy of their 'Headlights' album (1978). Lots of great tracks on it. 'Olivia, Lost and Turned Out' was a big R&B radio hit.
This was my introduction to The Whispers in 1987 when I was a teen. Since then they have come to be one of my very favorite R&B groups. So many classics. Now Rock Steady probably isn't even in my top 5 of theirs that's how good these cats are. Please react to I Can Make It Better. You like bass - that will blow your mind.
This was just one of many chart toppers at my local indoor roller skating rink back in the 80's. My friends and I practically lived there on the weekends.
Their moves are a dance called the Rock Steady, a throwback to, I think, the 60's(?) 70's(?). I remember dancin to this at the OZ in the 80's. So fun ! I wish i had a time machine, and could take you two back with me to a club in the 80's ! We would have such a good time !!!!

Yes they should do some Babyface songs? Babyface is an amazing artist and underrated in my opinion!
You HAVE TO please do some SOS Band. Just be good to me or Alexander O’Neal
Babyface produced the 80s R&B, pop and part of the early hip hop scene. The Clapton tune, Madonna's Take a Now, just a couple of his masterful touch.
Wow
Timeless, how can you not get into it. I miss music like this so much.
Me too wish it would return
Isn’t that the truth! Such good music back then and simpler times it seems….I really miss it.
It instantly took me back to those days
@@Governor1993 I know that is right it's instantly took me back to those days
It's still available. I don't even know new music. It's not worth my brain space, for the most part.
What a classic! This song had an entire university campus moving on the dance floor! I remember performing this in marching band!!👏👏
Totally bringing me back to college too! I still whip out the rock dance moves whenever I get the chance. LOL.
I was in high school at the time, but I bet this song sounded amazing performed by a marching band!
Wish I still had, or ever had, the moves to do Justice to this song! :)
@Lori Stone I had some, but it paled in comparison to everyone around me. Being a musician, audiophile, and DJ, I chose, and played the music. As for band, I helped in the music arrangements. I wanted to be a band director. Shifts in school funding, as you know, squashed that.
@@kellyreiterman Me too, mostly in private nowadays! 😂😂😂
They struck gold with this album in '87. "In The Mood" is a definitive slow jam.
That needs to be the next one
Step into the show-wow-wow-wer
Just heard in the mood man what a beautiful song
Thats a jam too😊
The dance they where doing during the chorus ( rock, steady ) was actually a popular dance back in the 80’s called “ the rock” , we killed that dance🔥🔥🔥🔥😄
I remember rocking it doing the rock oh the memories 💜
The Whispers are the epitome of smooth and classy without pretentiousness. Yes we were all on the dance floor or rink floor when this came on.
You will surely love “It’s a Love Thing”
