  • On my last trip I was heading into some heavy winds so I tightened down my sway controller. I made the mistake in tightening it just a little too much and it failed. In this video I will fix the damage and show you what I learned about adjusting the sway control.

    thanks for the adjustment advice. I've had 2 ball failures(weld actually broke - not screws)in the last two years. I always disconnect the bar when backing up but, like you, followed manufacturer instructions on adjusting the sway. I will try the bottom nut adjustment on my next one :)... I'll also check out the load leveling video as getting a straight answer to proper adjustment has been difficult.

    I did exactly the same thing today as what you were showing !
    Same everything !
    I had it really tightened down and I’m sure that’s why it did it !
    Only instructions I was given is not to back up with it and yes I did but I think the bolts actually let go before I backed up because I couldn’t find them !
    Ohh well , a costly venture

      Sorry to hear that you popped the bolts as well. I don't think it has anything to do with backing up either. Mine let loose while diving. I have been running many, many miles now with the sway controller a half turn looser and no issues.

    First and foremost, it is not a stabilizer. It is a weight distribution. The sway control is the part you are working on. The sway control does not need to be that tight to be operational. You should always have equal tension on top and bottom adjustment. 1-2 turns on adjustment MAX. I have pulled bumper pulls up to 10k and have never cranked down that much tension. If you need that much tension, add a second sway control on the opposite side. It’s okay to pull cautious but not okay to do so scared. Tighter is not always better as you have found out. Another problem with those style sway controls, one is supposed to loosen tension or remove before turning while backing up.

    Thank you for sharing your experience for sure A close one ! Myself just got into a 24 foot greywolf duel axle and it came with the system easy lift that you’re demonstrating the component that failed on you. I do also have but it’s not installed. I am 100% going to run bolts through the frame of that camper and get bolts on other side to lock that plate down lol! Needs to be one with the trailer how I take it , also going to use blue thread lock and grease those small hitch ball so smooth rolling while the design of the locking feature does the work 👌🏻 first trip next week 400mile run ! thanks again be safe !

      Congrates on getting you a Greywolf. The Eaz-Lift is a good sytsem when it's set up. I'm glad my experience can help you set set up yours. Good luck on your big trip!

    I love your example and sharing what you found out the hard way. However it is a big help. How did the adjustments work for your next trip?

    • @riderescue

      The adjustments I learned (and shared in this video) have been working great. It's tight enough to keep my trailer steady in the wind, and while passing, and it is not too tight on busy, narrow, city streets.

    I always stop before getting on the interstate (on ramp or emergency lane) and after (the emergency lane or off ramp) to either install or remove the sway control on mine. So i don’t have to worry about any binding or anything. Was told it’s not really needed unless on the interstate at higher speeds. So when off the interstate, i don’t go over 45 and have no problems.

    Just drill the holes out and install 6 threaded well nuts. Never worry about it again.

      Great suggestion. The metal is not thick enough for self threaded bolts. Well nuts will work fantastic. Cheers!

    What do you mean tighten til it bottoms out?

    • @riderescue
      @riderescue  2 года назад

      The top nut with the welded on handle can be turned town till it stops (or bottoms out) and can't be turned any further. Then you can adjust the lower bolt. Once that is done, then it's quick and easy to tighten it down and go, then loosen a few turns when you off the highway and in tight turns.

      It says right on the sway bar to tighten the top until it bottoms out, then adjust with the bottom bolt. The bracket that squeezes the brake pad is designed to work this way.

  • @alanshaw4655
    @alanshaw4655 3 года назад +1

    lever is the only place you tighten down the pads on the sway bar, LEAVE THE BOLT ON THE BOTTOM ALONE !. only time you mess with the adjuster bolt is when the pads wear over time. tighten down the lever until it starts to get tight, then back it off half a click. never over tighten the lever. i just have to ask, when you left out of the gas station, did you try backing up at any time ?..NEVER BACK UP WITH THE SWAY BAR INSTALLED !..OR YOU GET WHAT YOU GOT, OR WORSE !..LOL. also, you don't have the safety chains crossed ?, they should be crossed !.

    • @riderescue
      @riderescue  3 года назад +1

      The manufacture instructions does say to release a little pressure with the bottom bolt and keep the top one able to bottom out at full drag. I did not back up with it tight. I always try to release the pressure when I back up to park. Good eye with the chains, I do cross the chains when I tow. This was a quick hook up for the video.
