Don't use a backfist, use hammer fist or an open palm strike. Imagine if you fell down on concrete. Would you rather the back of your hand, the side, or the base of your palm absorb the blow? The back of your hand has very thin skin, blood vessels, and tendons. The side of the fist opposite the thumb has a thick layer of muscle and skin to protect the metacarpal bones. In additional, when striking (like swinging an invisible hammer) the motion is more powerful due to the muscles used in the upper arm as well as body momentum transferred through the swing. The lower portion of the palm opposite the thumb is also a good weapon. I don't know about you, but most people are going to break their fall with this portion of the hand. The same applies to striking, except instead of the hand hitting the ground, it is impacting the nose, ears, throat, groin, jaw, temple, or joint. Another bonus of the palm strike to the face is that the extended fingers or thumbs can quickly gouge the eyes.
This is actually true, but I guess most people think that they aren't strong enough or don't really know about palm strikes. Quite a lot of people also put their thumb inside of their fist when punching- never do this is can break your thumb. When punching you should use your two fingers closest to your thumb as they move less when hitting something then the other two, if you were to use the other two fingers they could break. Also remember to fully straighten out your arm when punching as it exerts more force. The only time you should really use back is if you need to 'finish' someone as Bill Blinky said or if you have damaged your knuckle quite badly but even so try to use palm strikes instead of back hand.

Great advice and sound logic. In fact if you watch Iian Abernathy [a noted karate self defense person], he often uses the back fist as a 'finisher'.

Could the video editors please stop mincing the show's segments into tiny mini videos? I find this annoying so I haven't subscribed & seldom watch.
They did it so they could get more views.
Awesome
