E S we say if Italians know how to do fish they will charge 200 dollars a plate .Italian food is good but not what they claim ,i can eat pasta not that many times a month ,when it comes to seafood and fish we put them in the small pocket ,in Canada he have all the nationalities of the world ,with they restaurants ,italian food is overated ,way overrated ,expensive plates of pasta with tomato sauce ,and 100 grams of chicken on it ,
@@georgesantos-jt6me that's because you eat "Italian food" in Canada... please, go to Italy before committing to a judgement. You would be suprised of how many dishes are not famous all over the world and are incredibly cheap. Italian food is expensive abroad, not in Italy :)
The reason some restaurants don’t want to open yet is they can only have 50% capacity and for that reason they will lose money. In 2 weeks , if all goes right , they will allow more people inside and more restaurants will open !
I could be wrong, but if they open they will have to pay their staff 100% of their salaries and not the government. So it's like you said, huge loss of money. :(
tania costa you’re right and on top of that all the utilities bills ( hidro etc. ) and the full rental of the place ( on hold because of covid) if that’s the case
Hospitality is the most affected sector. The Portuguese government should help businesses getting back on track by continuing to help pay the wages. In the U.K. the employer is expected to pay 20% from August and the government tops 6o%. Still lots of job losses expected. The government can’t save every single job...
Portuguese people use them common sense. Is not about money is about to be safe. If you get the virus is a big chance that you don’t survive, so money will not save you. Well done for Portuguese people and God bless you all and your country. As well the rest of the world 🌎

Congratulations: Welcome back. It was the first time i saw your portuguese guest , congratulations to him as well for his great explanations and knowledge. Many years ago, someone of my family locked me inside of the pasteis de Belem factory, right where the cakes wait after coming from the oven. The idea was for me to eat as many as i could! Well after that i could not even look at them for quite a few months! That was a long time ago! Now i am feeling like i want to be there inside again! Here i am starving again because of you! Cheers
Hey Joen there's portuguese restaurants in LA, well, one at least, it's called Natas Pastries... And there's also a few of them in Miami like Old Lisbon, Jardim de Portugal, Braga Portuguese Restaurant...
Oh boy, this video is making me so hungry. With this lockdown , I don’t know when I can go to Portugal and start restaurant hopping. Growing up I ate a lot of bacalhau but must say not my favourite unlike the Portuguese. I prefer fresh fish. Joen, I can feel your pleasure when you drank that beer 😀😀😄
Hey Joen, just to clarify, there are Portuguese restaurants in NY too, just not in the touristic areas. It’s so great to see you out and about, and I really hope they allow tourists back in Portugal soon, so all this amazing restaurants will stay in business. Stay well and classy 😉
Strange seeing Lisbon so quiet. When it is safe to travel again it will be one of the first places I return to, one of my favourite places in the world 💜
Yes, in Massachusetts we have a lot of Portuguese restaurants in Cambridge, New Bedford and Fall River and also have great bakeries. Casa Portugal in Cambridge has the typical atmosphere of a restaurant in Lisbon. Its so nice to see this video. I love Portugal so much and it really stole my heart!

Great work guys! Me and my bf going next week and we are hoping to see some more places to open and we planning to not leave with empty bellies, your saviors are coming :D
This is great to see. I am ready to come back and go and eat in Lisbon. I was going to take a break from pork this year but after seeing those ribs... I hope they open to the country up to foreigners soon. They are saying maybe after June 15th but I am ready to come now.
I was recommended your Channel and it's been so cool watching some of your travel videos. I travel as well throughout Europe and I have visited Lisboa and Porto a couple of times and had planned on visiting again in March 2020 but the Pandemic changed that for me. I am from California but was locked down in Zagreb Croatia, so its been interesting being in Europe now after the lockdown. By the way your Portuguese friend Antonio seems so fun and is just my type, does he have a RUclips Channel or IG? I would love for him to show me around Lisbon when I return this summer LOL.
Great video guys , it’s good to see Lisbon slowly recovering I really miss Portugal, hopefully our trip to Cascais and Lisbon can still happen in September. 👍
It's great to go out to the places we love, we went to Abrigo do Pastor Monday night, one of my favourite places to eat. But like Lisbon, no tourists here and many places have not opened. I fear this situation will be a lot worse than people think, all over the world.
Nice to see you out and about. Makes me hungry. I expect some businesses are trying to be safe and cautious with a gradual rollout of services, especially when they may be unsure of demand.
Hey classy couple !,you guys are so lucky, here in Canada we are not open yet; and it will take a long time before people are comfortable enough to sit at a restaurant. We are slightly opening businesses however many small are closed for good, which is very sad. It's today's reality . By the away loved your video! 😊 Lovely couple , I am Portuguese and cod is not what I like the most; my favourite recipe is bacalhau a Gomes Sa, the cod is boneless and very moist not dry at all. Ask Joen to try this recipe maybe he will like it.😊
We were hoping to be at Golegã Horse Fair in November. But, MASSIVE crowds -mayyyybe some free flowing spirits to loosen up the love😉- and who knows how it will all be by then. Hilarious! Antonio is a class act and definitely adds to the Stay Classy blog. As for the Italian / Portuguese cuisine juxtaposition - to me, its a bit of a false one. I've had Italian meals done homestyle that are fantastic, and I've had Portuguese dishes that were "passable". I've had mom and pop Chinese where the flavours were to die for, and I've had Persian "fessenjoon" that I constantly dream about. It's all about the quality of the ingredients, and the love and execution put in by the person cooking in the kitchen. What is to note, Portugal possesses an old culture, and old cultures have refined cooking and cuisine using the local or accessable ingredients over many generations. Joen's and Amalie's trip to Northern Portugal to discover more food and wine and the ditching of Michelin star restaurants in favour of the more local is truly the start of a gastronomic adventure. Stay healthy guys, thank you for supporting the mom and pop places in Portugal, and blessings and strength to all looking to reopen.
The first one, Lautasco. used to be a very popular place in the 90's. Fish was outstanding. Then tourism happened and the prices skyrocketed. It's good to see them humble (?) again.
Hi Classy Couple, It's heartbreaking to see so many places closed down. If not for Covid-19 my husband and I would be in Lisbon now. I do hope globally we can ramp up quickly. I don't think any country will see loads of tourists until international travel restrictions are lifted. We are experiencing the same thing in the US. Unless it's drive-through, take out or outdoor seating restaurants are having a very difficult time.
Portuguese food is underrated due to the fact that it's usually not the type of food you can eat fast and be done with it (of course there are exceptions). Portuguese food needs time, both to prepare and to eat it. Most popular Italian or Spanish influenced countries food are food that is super fast to make and super fast to eat (Pizza, Tacos, etc...), thats a reason that makes sense in my head to justify this. Another one is the influence of Portuguese people in the USA, which is tiny compared to the Italian/Spanish influence there. In the mid 1900s millions of Italian people migrated to the USA, Latinos are also currently migrating a lot there. There's a lot of influence because of that. While portuguese, we are so few, and USA never was the top destination to migrate to.

Wazzup my peeps! I am so glad to see you both outside and eating and yes you made me jealous and hungry too. 🤣🤣🤣 Hope the restaurants survive and get some people enjoying the excellent food. Desfrutar! 😀
Bacalhau, was introduced by the Vikings when they used to come to Lusitania coasts to take salt and even to explore salt themselves around here more than 1000 years ago. Salt was very important back then to preserve dry food, including salmon. And salt was also money, salary. So, very early, bacalhau became the most important dry fish in Portugal. And the biggest and best pieces were preserved for weeks and months for important occasions like Christmas, once in Advent and Christmas eve, Christians were not allowed to eat meat. And so, the Portuguese used to fish it in the Northern seas of England, until the British did not allow it any longer. Anyway, we also used to fish it in Terra Nova. Terra Nova was a Portuguese possession, even before Colombo reached America. The cities of Labrador (also the local dog breed's name) and Saint John, were villages called Lavrador (the name of a Portuguese sailor) and São João. Portuguese also made a village in Maine before 1492. It was a secret ,as many others, Australia was a secret, per example. And so, Terra Nova became our main source of Bacalhau. Terra Nova never was officially Portuguese. It was on the Spanish side of Treaty of Tordesillas. So it was kinda given to our allies British, who renamed it to Newfoundland and misspelled Lavrador, and the Portuguese could continue to occupy it for their main interest: fishing our dear bacalhau. As we all know, Newfoundland became administrated by Canada. The Canadians fished there so intensely, that many fish species started to disappear and the main occupation of the island finished completely by law, turning entire cities into ghost cities since the 1990s. And of course, the Portuguese were not allowed to fish there any longer. That is why all our dear codfish is imported. Yes, it is a national dish, but we don't have the fish. About the way we prepare it, it is simply dried under the sun with salt over to help the process and to keep worms and bacteria away. It is a cure, a pre-historical pre-cooking process to preserve food. It really cooks it and when well made, people can eat it just like that, but it's too salty. Codfish is also a national dish for the British with their fish and chips, but we have a friendly joke for them: they don't cook it, they spoil it :D
Awesome vid guys. Open up the city! We have a really good Portuguese restaurant here in Toronto called Lisbon by Night. It's great! Very authentic. Keep up the good work.
Speaking as a portuguese, (and I depend on tourists, I work in a hotel chain) you gotta realize, most businesses in Lisbon, specially, restaurants, depend on tourists to be able to work. We have no incoming tourists into the country, flights still closed, cruises not working, tourists is like 90% of the income for most of the restaurants. They have loads of expenses, rent, staff paychecks, all of that. With hardly any income, they have no way to even be able to cover the expenses, let alone make a profit. Most are waiting for an official response from the governement to see how to proceed, to see when are the tourists coming back and all that. It doesn't depend just on the business owners, remember that. Having said that, and I meant no harm or harsh criticism, just a bit of inside info, please do come visit when you can, we do have the most amazing food ;)
OMG I am so jealous... I live in Cali, the closest I got to a real meal out was take out salads in the garden at the BIg Sur Bakery, it was like goosebumps happy but nothing like what joys you are seemingly experiencing... That beer moment at the courtyard cafe was like a war film after peace was declared, for some reason I thought of the film" Life Is Beautiful", which has nothing to do with it, but it feels like we are all in a war situation, not a virus, much more than that. I do so hope for more adventures from your world, it's channels like this that have helped us all keep going in the face of the unthinkable. I cannot wait to escape America and get back to Europe and explore the old world. I can only hope all those cafes are not further victims of this nonsense. Be well : )
"Making out with an old Alfama woman who knows how to cook", was kinda weird Joen, but you did make me laugh! Great video and you made me really want to get there and explore all the neighborhoods for more culinary surprises.
Antonio is now my own.... personal (Portuguese) Jesus.... Pork abandons bone, please don't dine alone. Reach out and touch fish. I dunno.... I figured I'd go Depeche Mode since everyone else is judging his presence. Depeche Mode also had the brilliance to use horses in their video ☝..... but I may like the Marilyn Manson version better.
My boyfriend is from Canada and he doesn't like bacalhau, he says it smells like foot!! How the hell am I dating this guy?? 😂 but we live abroad and I'm trying to persuade him to move to Lisbon together by showing him your videos because he's a chef de cuisine hahaha thanks once again guys, this was one of my favourite videos! Antonio is hilarious 😂
see if you can make a burger of bacalhau he will go for it when he ear the word burger rarararararar, i also live in canada and im moving to portugal till next summer im putting my house for sale soon ,
Thanks for scouting it out and making this video, I really enjoyed it. I hope to visit Portugal one day soon. Well "soon" probably means 2022 at this point.
That guy reminds me of a cross between Brian Cohen, the Monthy Python's messiah, and Sgt. Oddball, the hippy tank commander in "Kelly's Heroes", the movie...
Brings tears to my face seeing my beautiful city in such manner.. I live in the USA now for about 25 years and going back hopefully soon will be depressing for me😔
Great video guys...but what's with the Greek music while you're eating the Pasteis de Belem? OPA! Is that street busker playing it, or is it dubbed into the video LOL! And Antonio looks like he had a few drinks before he met up with you guys. TOMA! He's 100% right about bacalhau. It's a gift from Poseiden himself. So many ways to prepare it. Unfortunately guys, some restaurants will stay closed until they can fully open without restrictions. Otherwise, it will cost them more to be open than to stay closed. And yes, sadly some will never open. Hopefully the Government will provide subsidies for them, and incentives for tourists to come to Portugal (the way Italy is doing).
It was so nice to be back in our normal habitat! Let's support all these restaurants. They need it more than ever!

António is a funny guy to be around, good vibes! make more videos with him.
Dick,I'm, real, Portugues,macho
He has a pure American accent. He says that he was born in Lisbon, but I wonder if he lived in the US for sometime. I’m curious about his history
Cool video guys, me and my wife moved to Lisbon at the beginning of the lockdown, so we do not know the city at all lol.
Just up hill from where you were at the start of the video, there’s a restaurant called “O Marqês”. The food served is outstanding!
António almost stole your show, almost. You guys shoud have him more times in your vídeos
thanks for these fresh and full of good vibes video,até lego;)
Be well : )
So many aren’t opened yet in Porto de mos Leiria district, I can’t wait for all of it to open up.
Sorry to hear about the bankrupt restaurants in Lisbon. Sure wish we would've known about Taberna de Ferreiros when we were there!
yep..pretty much lol...i ve been already helping with take away and using home delivery
"Making out with an old Alfama woman who knows how to cook", was kinda weird Joen, but you did make me laugh! Great video and you made me really want to get there and explore all the neighborhoods for more culinary surprises.
I live 5mins from that 2nd restaurant. I have to try it out. Looked great
Almost 900 years of history and tradition are not easily erased. We will survive and be stronger.
Nice to see you beginning to appreciate the special fish dish 😎🍷🇬🇧🇵🇹🚍⚓️
Wish I was with you guys eating all these yummy food! Just loved the crunchy sound of the Pastéis de Belém when biting into it!!! Heaven!!!

Joen...I was feeling that beer man!!!!!!!
Hello my boys..nice whether in Portugal
Fantastic summer weather here in Portugal now!
Let's see Antonio in more vlogs
My boyfriend is from Canada and he doesn't like bacalhau, he says it smells like foot!! How the hell am I dating this guy?? 😂 but we live abroad and I'm trying to persuade him to move to Lisbon together by showing him your videos because he's a chef de cuisine hahaha thanks once again guys, this was one of my favourite videos! Antonio is hilarious 😂

Thanks for scouting it out and making this video, I really enjoyed it. I hope to visit Portugal one day soon. Well "soon" probably means 2022 at this point.
I miss all those delicious Portuguese foods!!! I went to Portugal last year and captured the beauty of Lisbon. I miss this place very badly !!!
ALDEIA. In New York City. Is awesome.
Nando’s is as close as we can get in UK to Portuguese in the UK!!!! Can’t wait to be back in Lisbon!
Nandos is more Portuguese South African than proper Portuguese. Even so, the Nandos in South Africa trumps the U.K
What a great video guys - It's so good to hear you speaking Portuguese!
5:08 Joen's look is priceless! He's like a kid that just had Xmas in May haha
Hahaha when Amalie said “I feel like a human again” - I felt that on a spiritual level 😪😂
Great one! Tasty. Nice job guys!
Thanks Artur!!
FROM NOW ON IT’S THE ANTÓNIO SHOW
Loved that first restaurant's name!
That guy reminds me of a cross between Brian Cohen, the Monthy Python's messiah, and Sgt. Oddball, the hippy tank commander in "Kelly's Heroes", the movie...
Your portuguese accent got better. Well done!
guys, you need to try a cake you can only find in Costa da Caparica called Claudino... its amazing!
Those pork ribs looked amazing!!!!!
Hey you’re back!
