  • The Wide Boyz, Peak District climbers Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall, head to Poland and the Czech Republic to test their skills on the region's beautiful and impressive sandstone towers. The only snag? Local climbing ethics mean metal protection and chalk are out - so Pete and Tom have to get their heads round the art of using knotted ropes at the same time as coping with some very hot conditions!!

    Another great film by Hotaches productions.

      i think the eastern stayed becose of ''eastern block'' history.
      It's funny when people say that and when you ask about Austria they say central europe and then you tell them that Prague is more west than Vienna

    Putting the sport of rock climbing firmly into the "stunt" zone. This, and of course Alex Honnold, is why climbers can't buy affordable insurance.

    • @AlesZvolanek

      both eastern and central are correct. a wall of text could follow why, but in short: central europe is originally german political concept from 19th century, eastern europe makes sense if u divide it geographically. the point also is some people in the eastern europe are allergic to be called that way due to former ties with soviet union etc.

    I don't understand why "local climbing ethics" mean you have to put your life / body at risk? I don't get why that has to be followed.

    • @Rambleale
      @Rambleale 5 лет назад +32

      Alex Denford you don't have to put your self at risk, no one is forcing you to climb there.

    • @epincion
      @epincion 5 лет назад +1

      Ok then following your logic I presume you would have no issue with bolting hard trad routes that are at your limit so that 'you don't have to put your life/body at risk'?

    • @golubyavan5851
      @golubyavan5851 5 лет назад +11

      The main reason of the local climbing ethics is simple: the sandstone rock is much softer than sandstone for example in colorado. Normal trad gear (nuts/friends) would damage it, fixed bolts like in sport climbing would lead to destroying the rock too, because too many climbers would climb there. But those who get used to the style of climbing don´t put themselves more at risk than any other trad/sport climbers.
      Here you can see just some of the results of not correct behaviour on rock, caused by wrong rappeling technique, for example: horolezeckametodika.cz/ucebnice/ochrana-prirody/horolezectvi-a-ochrana-prirody

    • @eyewitness4560
      @eyewitness4560 5 лет назад +15

      You're a guest there, so local ethics define how you should conduct yourself, no one is forcing you to be there.

    No chalk, knots for gear, who came up that idea? Same people who think the earth is flat? :p

    • @prokopkudlik6738
      @prokopkudlik6738 3 года назад +17

      Not really. Metal gear would easily damage this soft sandstone. In some cases, it would actually mean no help to you falling off either - it could just rip of a layer of rock. Regarding the chalk - it is a never ending discussion. There is probably no evidence of the chalk damaging the rocks. What is certain is the visual aspect, as well as the fact you ruin someone’s OS when leaving chalk trails behind you. This tradition conserves the climbing in a kind of a purer form. It is unique and we love it this way. ;)

    How did you confuse Czechia (& Germany..) with Poland? Actually these rocks are the birthplace of free climbing, starting in 1870'es..
    A shame you didn't value socialising with locals, they are excellent & down to earth climbers.
